Sorry if this has been a thread in the recent past but am just interested to know if you can remember your first ever town match? Opponents, score, scorers etc. Mine was Torquay at bp in the late eighties. Town won 1-0 and I think john cockerill got the goal, might be wrong tho

very early 90's a mid week game against peterborough, we won 3-2, it was blooody freezing!! Cant really remember any of the players tho, it was probably the 91-92 or 92-93 season

All I remember is it was against reading in 94 or 95.

My was in 1955, and I have no idea who we played or what the score was.(wheelchair)

Exeter City. Last game on the season in 1972. Won 3-0 to clinch the old 4th Division Championship.

Went with my sister, stood at the back of the pontoon and couldn't see a single thing all game.

Peterborough in April 1990. Was a promotion season from Div 4. Had won the previous 6/7 matches and I attended on a cold Tues night in the Findus and lost 2-1. Big Keef scored in the second half with a header from a corner into the pontoon end.

I think this was my first 'proper' game too(my first was in 1984 as a five year old against Fulham). the score was 1-0 and Livvo scored against Shaka Hislop following a Dave Gilbert free kick!

I rarely got taken when I was really young but I remember my first game attended being Grimsby Town 3-1 Portsmouth, 29/12/2001. I think it was Groves' first game in charge. Peter Crouch was the scorer for them and Jevons got two for us, one a penalty I think. I don't remember a lot about the game but I know the Dad missed two goals while getting me a Mars bar.

2nd Oct 1965 beat Bournemouth 2-0 Tees and Clifton.

It must be all of 3 months since the last thread of this type!

Mine was Swansea at home 91, second promotion season. Dave Gilbert scored that day and we won 2-0

28 December 1982

Can't remember who was playing but I was taken there by my uncle Dennis Pickett, a great guy and hard working fisherman who has since passed on, I think it may have been against barrow in the late sixties early seventies, I can't remember!

Very early 70's - a night match we won 2-0 or 2-1 and I cant remember who against although it would have been in March as it was a birthday treat. Hooked since then and have spent a lot of money and shredded a lot of nerves over the last 40 years!

63/64 massive crowd at Old show ground on a very cold winters afternoon,2-2 draw,think Godfrey got both for us.All to no avail though i think we were both relegated from Div 2 that year.Did you have a guy called De Gruchy playing full back or was that in an earlier life?

The first home game after the Auto Windscreens win against Oldham in 1998. We lost 2-0.

Last home game of the season around 2002ish. Beat Burnley 3-1 and Gazza played for them I think. My earliest memory was a goal from Boulding, think it was bobbling around and he just managed to slide it between the keepers legs and the crowd going mental, unless I was imagining in. Hooked ever since, shame it's been downhill ever since except Slade's second season.

If anyone can find any highlights of that game please please please send me the link. :)

wigan in the 70s,i think it was the old 4th division back then,i can remember singing my heart out in the old pontoon [ standing ] the atmosphere was brilliant back then,i can remember nigel batch in goal and tony ford playing

Last game of the season when we went down under bobby roberts. 1988(?), 1-1 v aldershot and the late Marc north missed a pen late on. Can't remember who the scorers were tho.

If it was 78/79 most likely to be Newport County and Blackpool if it was 79/80

Erm a few years back cant really remember, against Wycombe lost 2-1 at home with the scorers being Torres and Harrold i think.

Aldershot in 1979, stood in the Barrat stand when I was 8 years old. 1-1 with a couple of disallowed goals. Haven't a clue who was playing at the time.

Aston Villa, the first match of the season in 1947-48. We won 3-0 and Billy Cairns scored twice. It was the day they opened , for the first time, the 'Boys Paddock" which was attached to the Cleethorpes end of the Barrett Stand.

The attendance that day was over 20,000 and it seemed that half of them were in the paddock.When the game ended I was met by my mum and dad outside the ground and I was so bedraggled and dirty they could hardly recognise me.

Up to a few weeks ago I was quite proud of the length of time I've been going until I was chatting to a
great old boy who first watched Town eighty-three years ago. He is still a season ticket holder and his seat is towards the top of the Upper Findus. That must be some record.

1955 for me,and I cannot remember the game,all I can remember is Bob Crosbie up front, Clarry in goal and Jimmy Maddison on the wing and thinking he looked far too old to be a footballer.

Incidently I still take Icenian senior to games and he started in 1933 and has had a season ticket eversince apart from the little contratemp with Adolf.

the sad thing about this is the young kids wont have the kind of memories i have when they get older

may 1994 we drew 0-0 with millwall i was 9 and i won the tickets in a school raffle or something like that

Those two games were actually at the end of the 80-81 season...

In 1980, the year before, we certainly didn't copulate it up...last game was the 4-0 drubbing of Sheff U to win the league!

My first game was Feb 64....home draw v Huddersfield and stood up against the fence in the Imp Corner

As a little kid nothing could touch the Beatles until I started watching Town!

Unfortunately i was also at that game we were absolutely robbed 5 offside goals ,a disputed penalty and a deflection.The ref was a real homer.To our credit though all 13 Scunny fans stayed to the bitter end.

My dad used to take me to the Osmond Stand and I remember Maddison haring down the wing and having that exact same thought!

My uncle who is now pushing 90 used to watch them in the 1930's and says that even then the ground was only full when Town played Arsenal at home

Mine was against Norwich in 97/98 I think, can't remember scores etc.

First game I can remember going to is the Auto Windscreen Final 1998.

It was April 81. West Ham won the cup the year before against The Gooners. Somebody called Cross scored 4 for them that day.

Just looked it up and there was a gap of three weeks between the two 5-1 defeats. I thought they were back to back. We won only one of our last seven or so games and that was at Wednesday. Makes you wonder whether the then board were panicking about the possibility of the Town getting into the First Division.

Sorry Old Timer, it wasn't.

This guy really was one of the best centre forwards - certainly one of the fastest - when I first played in Grimsby league football. He still has a great sense of humour because he reckons the bloody drum is the only reason people can't hear his heart thumping by the time he gets up to his seat.

I'm not sure but when Town have two games in a week he may stay up there for a few days to save his legs

I'm told that I was taken to Blundell Park for my 3rd bithday in 1969, but cannot recall the match. My first memories of a town match are Grimsby v Exeter 1972 - McMennemy era and promotion celebrations followed. Addicted from that point on by my own choice, well nearly!
Oh to be 6 years old again, following the worlds greatest football team and desperately looking forward to watching my next Grimsby match at Blundell Park. Life was so bloody marvellous then although we didn;t ahve a colour telly! UTM

First game was against Middlesbrough in 1985. I was 13 at the time and only seem to remember the metal fences we all had to peer through. I still have the programme and a certain Brian Laws played for Boro that day. Later research tells me that we won 4-3 (great game apparently, shame about those bloody fences) and that it was the season when the Osmond Stand was the new home end and the away fans were in the Pontoon.

thanks for that barralad i will always have fond memories of that game even though we did lose,west ham was a good team then,it was great to see brooking,parkes and the likes,i was only 11 then,i use to go with my uncles who all use to sing, it was brilliant in them days

Try as I might I can't recall much at all about the first Town match I was at.All I can remember is that Harry Wainman was in goal,which means it was sometime in the seventies.When did Harry finish playing for GTFC ? Help me out someone please! ::)

Yep,that means I was about 5 years old (or less) when my dad first took me to BP.No wonder I can't remember sodomist all about it!

Early 60s with my Dad. I was very young so no idea which match. Remember messing about at the top of the back stairs in the old Barratt stand.

My Dad went to his first game in the early 1930s. He still follows them. (We are both old sods).

My first visits to BP were for reserve games as school would do trips to reserve games when we played a bigger team and I remember being absolutely freezing watching our reserves getting thumped by Liverpools second XI one night, the likes of Mike Hooper, Craig Johnston and Barry Vennison were playing for them. But my first proper game was when we beat Wolves 1-0 in the first round of the FA Cup in 1988.

I think mine was at home to Gillingham in the nineties, it was a division two game and we drew 0-0

Never forget them supporters who went and sat on the old Barratt stand, a incredible night for all players and supporters alike.

The gaffer at half time went berserk in the dressing room, and nobody argued with Laurie Mac his words were them supporters have come tonight to see you win the league champoinship and get out there and kick hell out of Exeter.

Which we did in big time.
Fabulous night that was never ever forget it.

According to wikipedia they have only ever been called Workington AFC, there is no mention of the word Town in their name ever.

Looked at it on wikipedia Les. It says that. Janice and Moira also said that they were called Workington Town. Perhaps someone may have an old programme , Over to you barralad/jock dock tower

Just dug out an old programme from, the 72/73 season, the old black and white fronted prog with the dock tower on the front. It was when they used to have the League Football insert in them and in this one there is a picture of Workington 72/73, no mention of Town after the name.

As a player we always called them Workington Town, never liked playing at the damned place always a tough game.

Christmas Day 1944 Town 2 Lincoln City 2. Losing 0 - 2 when my brother-in-law and I left to catch a train back to Healing from New Clee Station 10 minutes before the end. Story of my life at Blundell Park - missed all the good bits. Living in hope. Maybe tonight........
