I would back up Manc Mariner on Neon Neon and would add anything by Super Furry Animals - Radiator is a cracker to start with as is Guerilla. Would also recommend:

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Teenage Fanclub - anything you can get
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Doves - Lost Souls
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Barafundle
The Rapture - Pieces of the people we love

Good call on Radiator, the best from a very good catalogue from the super furries, I've been caning neon bible by arcade fire recetly too, whilst I do like Funeral I think Neon bible does not have one weak track, one of my favorite live bands too.

I love both the Arcade Fire albums, just that Funeral is in the current loop. Would agree about them live as well. I saw them at Leeds festival a few years ago and they were amazing. New Super Furries album due shortly. Can't wait.

They are all good.

Easy listening I admit. But you do find yourself singing along when they come on the Radio.

Best live band I ever seen live has to be Queen.

Enjoyed Oasis/Radiohead/Killers  but for sheer entertainment you couldn't beat Freddie Mercury.

Also (for the oldies) The Jam, 4 concerts and every one top top line.

I would have loved to have seen Queen, took my Mrs to see that fella who won stars in your eyes as Freddie Mercury at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, I swear if you close your eyes for a minute it could be the actual man.

If you close your eyes you could mistake me for Freddie Mercury.

So long as he wasn't saying anything.

Saw Queen at the Gardens in 74 (at the time of Queen 2 album) They made everyone sit on the floor. Thought they were the absolute highlight of Live Aid. Radio GaGa was absolutely brilliant. Having said that the only Queen album I own is "Night at the Opera".

Elvis Costello produced that album. It was during those session that he met Cait O'Riordan, his future wife.

Absolutelyfuckinggreat album.

In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky I lay down on the ground.
And the arms and legs of other men were scattered all around.
Some cursed some prayed, some prayed then cursed, then prayed then bled some more.
And the only thing that I could see was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me.
But when we got back labelled parts one to three, there was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me.

How on earth such an ugly, toothless drunk can come up with that is beyond me...

Hmm, "The guy from The Clash" - how dare you talk about my all time hero in such a way!

The music died on 22 December 2002 when Joe Strummer departed this earth. That guy that taught me all I know about social decay, political and social repression, and militarism. A true great in all senses.

In 1983 when he sacked Mick Jones he went into a huge decline and only got his creative shit together in 1999 when he formed The Mescalaros; they went on to produce some excellent albums - worth checking them out.

A DVD of his life story came out a year or so ago, called "Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten" - absolutely worth watching that.

I actually prefer "Marquee Moon" by Television. The title track must rank as having one of the best riffs ever. Now, I wish I'd been fortunate enough to see them live.
I once played a Frank Zappa live album at 45 r.p.m. by accident and didn't realise...

suprised no-one has chipped in with any Pink Floyd tracks??

or am i just boring??

David Gilmour has to be amongst the top 5 guitarists of all time along with (in no particular order) Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Gary Moore

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Hotel California - The Eagles
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Back In Black - AC/DC
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
November Rain - Guns n Roses
Sympathy For The devil - Rolling Stones
Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding
Hey Jude - The Beatles
Running To Stand Still - U2
Still Got The Blues - Gary Moore
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie

All the above songs (and many more others too) have to be from some of the most influential artists of all time

Very true. Psychomodo is a great album and the live version of "Tumbling Down" on Face to Face is up there as one of the best live tracks of all time (IMO). Did you see them at the Central Hall in the early 80's? Bizzare venue but a great gig.

The Winter Gardens gig was brilliant. A lot of the Thursday regulars were asking who the mouthy sod on stage was. Harley soon had them eating out of his hand.....

Seem to remember hearing/reading that one of the band members was killed in the Lockerbie crash.

I'm not too far behind you barralad and I think it's a good statement the the music of the last 15 years or so is of a quality that it can still be appreciated by silly old gits.  I think the only period of music that really did my head in was the rave scene late 80's. I have not seen one mention of any of that music on this thread.  I have been to see a few of the newer bands with my nephew, and my neices' boyfriend and have thoroughly enjoyed the concerts despite being one of the older ones there.
They just don't like it when I throw a few wicked shapes on the dance floor though  ;)

Chapman-Witney Streetwalkers at the Winter Gardens around about 1973/74 was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. The atmosphere was fantastic and I reckon they played about 5 encores. Roger Chapman was interviewed in the N.M.E. a week or two later and he was raving about it.

Wow.. some else who was there!! I was begining to think I'd dreamt it! Fantastic gig! I remember some bright spark swininging from a chandelier! I kept that NME was a while but like everything else in my past.. it's gone missing lol! Roger Chapman still gigs, his voice isn't quite as good and he's a bit larger now, but he's still good to watch! I think thet were supported by Dirty Tricks.. the next big thing in 76.. they now tour as a Led Zep tributeband called Stairway to Zeppelin! Theres some good vids on UTube of the Streetwalkers circa 76 that bring  a few memories back!

The Gardens in the 70's on a Thursday night was THE place to be. Only now can we truly appreciate how lucky we were. Most of the gigs were pay on the door if I remember rightly.

Saw Queen, Edgar Broughton Band, Sparks (their first ever British gig), Manfred Mann's Earthband, Cockney Rebel, Be Bop Deluxe, Stranglers, Sex Pistols etc. Utterly superb stuff!!!

I think it's a good statement the the music of the last 15 years or so is of a quality that it can still be appreciated by silly old gits.

Speaking of bands from last 15 years, Gene were a good band. Also, their bass player is a Town fan.

This is very true. A friend of mine recently opined that this is the first "generation" where kids and oldies are virtually listening to the same music and it forges some links between the generations. There is no way my parents would have listened to anything that I was listening to.

If you go to a concert no-one bats an eyelid if you are older. Equally I was impressed by the younger turn-out at Billy Bragg at the Engine Shed in Lincoln.

I was never that sure about the "rave" stuff but some of the great Manchester bands came out of it so it can't be all bad.

Wow.. some else who was there!!

I was there too and if it was 73/74,then i would have been 15.Sure i saw them there when i was older.Did they do more than one gig?

Lost count of the bands i saw at the Winter Gardens, but i have all the ticket stubs somewhere.Highlight had to be AC/DC with Bon Scott. Was deaf for a week.Fantastic night.

UFO,another great band i saw there plus the Stranglers,Sex Pistols,Clash,Undertones,Damned,Buzzcocks,Skids,Dr Feelgood,Edgar Broughton Band and many many more.Great night.

The one I saw, and maybe the same one as you, was 1976. Don't think they did more than one gig, maybe they came as Family. Makes you wonder were all those fans went!

I somewhat pride myself on my memory but freely admit you have got me doubting myself now. It could have been 76. According to Wikki they only formed "late 73". Definitely don't remember them playing more than one gig at the W.G.

76 sounds more like it to me.I left school in 75 and doubt i would have been going to the WG before that.I have a terrible memory though. All i do know is i definitely saw Roger Chapman at some point.

Well not wanting to drag this on too much, but I went with a guy who had his leg in plaster and I can relate that to him playing cricket, or rather not playing cricket in 1976 because of that. I can remember that but I can never remember where I put my glasses!!

Gary Moore is one of the most influential artists of all time? Gary Moore wasn't even the most influential member of Thin Lizzy! As a solo artist he is derivative and unimaginative. If you want to hear great new blues give Joe Bonamassa a listen.

Why, why, why do people continually mention Oasis; surely the most non-original band of all time?

I've spent the evening sat in the garden, next to my chiminea, drinking gin and tonic and listening to Tonight's the Night by Neil Young. Oasis? My Arse...

Neil Young is having something of a resurgence in popularity. Was in HMV on Saturday and of the three people in front of me, two were buying After the Goldrush and Harvest.

"Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is one of the greatest songs ever especially the descant refrain 8)!

Saw Thin Lizzy last year, or the bastardized version that wheels itself around these days as Thin Lizzy, I sacked it off after they opened with a rubbish version of whisky in the jar. At the moment its all about Boxer by the national, Grey Britain by Gallows and Boys and girls in America by the hold steady.

He's my all time musical hero. Aside for the dodgy eary 1980s Geffen years, he's been consistently superb for 40 years.

So many near perfect albums; After the Goldrush, Tonight's the Night, Rust Never Sleeps, Sleeps with Angels, Freedom, Ragged Glory, Weld, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, On the Beach, Broken Arrow, Harvest, American Stars and Bars etc etc etc

Amazing.

Also so many superb live gigs that I've been to over the years; the next being in Nottingham in 3 weeks time...

Must agree...Joe Bonamassa is very very good! Saw him in Wolverhampton in April and he gave a great gig, good to see some of the audience were under 65 though! Songs like Mountain Time and Happier Times are more than good blues songs. I see he had Clapton joining him at the Albert Hall last month!

Yeah, shame really. It would have been great to see them live again. I saw them at The Winter Gardens in the early 80s. I didn't even realise they were still going. Another fave band of mine that have been going for years are Stiff Little Fingers. Still going strong today despite a few line up changes but still with their original lead singer Jake Burns, and had their 30th Anniversary gig in 2007 when they played Inflammable Material in track order and then a medley of favourites. "At The Edge" was my theme song when I was about 15.

They would always teach me that to swear was a sin
Always speak your mind but not aloud
Think of something that you want to do with your life
Nothing that you like that's not allowed
I've no time to talk about it
All your stupid hopes and dreams
Get your feet back on the ground son
It's exams that count not football teams

Off to see another of my all time fave bands, Carter USM in November, at Brixton Academy when they are gonna play their first 2 albums in track order. Can't wait.

If you're picking a Streets album it has got to be 'Original Pirate Material'. Nothing he has done since has been in the same league. Likewise 'The Libertines' is a sorry, sorry imitation of 'Up the Bracket'.

Original Pirate Material is a good album, i just prefer the story thats told in A Grand Don't Come For Free. As for The Libertines i just prefer more songs in The Libertines than Up the Bracket.
