Nope, no deals as all the money we take from friendly's is going to the running of the youth team...

Anyone know if there is any kind of commentary on tonight's game please?

I'm not going as I don't think it's worth a tenner for a glorified training session.

I think I'll go. I've already got plans on Friday night so can't make it to the Hull game and I'd like to see the new lads playing to see the sort I thing to expect for the season.

Am with you on this one, not being rude but a £10 for pre-season bit daft considering its only Doncaster if it where top class opponents than fair enough but it ain't ..... :-/

It's not JUST about going to watch the match though. This is a chance for everyone to contribute in small part to the youth system the future of the club. I can't make it unfortunately but would go and happily pay a tenner.

You sure that's not just text commentary? If not, then that begs the question why can't Town do the same?

Can't say 'sure', but it says broadast live, is text 'broadcast'? Would've thought that meant commentary.
But I agree with your last bit, why didn't they?

It's been a tenner for friendlies for each of the last few years, so it's better value than it was! (And also a bit daft to be shocked at the price)

Because commentary on Mariners world is just BBC Humberside is it not? and if Humberside ain't covering it then what can Grimsby do?

After "easy" friendlies last season we lost at home to Donney (and Barnsley). We seem to be following the same approach this season regarding playing weaker and then much stronger teams.

The bosses said in todays telegraph they like it that way, when playing the better teams they learn how we cope when we don't have the ball and have to defend lots. You don't learn that playing against weaker opposition in friendlies.
As pointed out results don't mean anything in friendlies.

We should be playing 4 4 flipping 2, after you conpare the 1st half and 2nd half performaces. After the 1st half I was ready to call one of our new signings total gash, but I suppose I better him him chance after the 2nd half. I blame 4-3-3 for making us look crap in the 1st half. And did anyone else notice when the PA bloke red out the attendance the 1st time he sais "Tweleve thousand..." instead of tweleve hundred!!

the points i learnt from tonight
4-3-3 is a complete waste of time, hearn is out on the left and not involved in the game
hatton doesnt look convincing imo gave the ball away far to easy
elding is our equivalent to marmite love him or hate him, love the guys passion for the club but his work rate is for nothing and nothing comes of it,his positioning decision making is poor and his finishing he needs 10 attempts to score 1 goal. in my opinion cook is by far the superior player. Did anyone notice donnys players wasnt running around like a headless chicken? thats because they let the ball do the work.
Soares can be fustrating at times but i fell the gaffers dont no what his best position is as yet.i think he just needs a goal then he will thrive here.
pearson miller didnt put a foot wrong as per
donnys first goal was very soft goal and we should of done better,2 penaltys, goal disallowed for us on another day we may of won this one
2nd half was completley different cook, colbecks pace, woods determination and southwells insticts inside the box changed the game
looking at first 11 i'd go for
mckeown
wood pearson milller ???????????/thomas
colbeck niven thanoj thomas/soares
hearn cook
southwell,disley,pearson,

Ive said all along that the 4-3-3 formation would just not work with the players we have, they would work far more effectively with a 4-4-2 formations with the left mids pushing up and the wing backs also pushing up the attack.

I know its very unfair to say that after ony 45 mins of viewing against a L1 side, am prob being way too harsh. 2nd half showing was much better.

Second half was really promising. Don't know what sort of team Donny had out for the second half but we outplayed them and looked a real threat with a bit more pace in the side. Colbeck looked a real threat and Cook won plenty in the air when he got on. First half, they looked the two leagues better than us and we really struggled to get to grips with the game.
A good workout overall.

Interesting performance by Thomas - First half thomas kept getting caught forward to many times giving donny far to much space up front. Elding tried his best to track back but lets no be kidding ourself elding isnt a defender. Although he looks very good going forward it worries me playing aswad in a 4-3-3 due to lack of protection. Second half aswad had the protection of Soares in front of him and he flourished, he went forward louie dropped of and visa versa - if him and louie can carry on building a bond were it allows one or the other to go forward as the other drops we will have a brilliant left flank.
Andy Cook looked very handy and wins his more than fair share in the air and IMO i would start him nigh every game due to how physical he is along with his decent amount of pace. Another played that i liked the look of tonight was Colbeck - he has raw pace and swings in a decent delivery. Him and cook could form a great partnership.
Overall i have to say we looked 10x better 4-4-2 rather than 4-3-3 but time will tell if HandS will try it. UTM

The game ended 2-3.
Game of 2 halves as others have said with town much more like it in the second half. However despite Donny having good possesion and moving the ball well they rarely troubled us and Macca did not have a save to make. This was due to everyone doing their defending jobs, harrying and getting a foot in together with Donny's lack of a cutting edge up front.
Mckeon: Did not have much to do, maybe was caught cold by the hard low cross for the first goal. Got close to saving the second penalty.
Hatton: Not a good night for Sam. Conceding both penalties knocked his confidence. Recovered in second half and linked well with Colbeck
Miller and Pearson: Not much got past them and they looked quite comfortable on the ball
Thomas: Had a tough first half without much help, he was up against a winger and an overlapping fullback. Stuck to his task, not much got past him. More of an attacking threat in the second half.
Disley: worked hard to close people down but did not get on the ball much
Niven: Played well, broke up play, passed it simple and won a good few arial battles in midfield. Good signing.
Artus: Put himself about but could not get his passing game going as a lot of the work tonight was defensive.
Thanoj: looks physically stronger this season, got into forward positions
Soares: Played 90 mins, high energy. Played in a several positions, midfield, wide-left and behind the striker. The best I have seen him play. He will be a threat this year in our league and when in a forward midfield role had several good efforts on goal. You can see why he scored 16 from that position before joining us.
Elding, worked hard but his quality of touch, pass and finishing was not good enough. Will struggle to make the starting line-up
Hearn: Hardly in the game and did not come out for the second half. Injury maybe?
Cook: My choice to lead the line. Good old fashioned centre forward. Good in the air a true target man. Has a go at goal whenever he can. Not too scruffy with the ball at his feet either.
Colbeck; came on a half-time and played an authodox winger role. Caused Donny defence problems. will do well when we play 442.
Southwell: Played really well for his time on the pitch a real brave terrier effort. first goal a stunning header from a cross shot from soares. Went in like a bullet. I can see him getting a good few minutes on the pitch and benefitting from training and playing with the first team.

I also would like to know who the keeper was during the pre-match shooting practice. He looked handy. He was not our junior keeper.
