Add to that Monkhouse getting injured forcing him to abandon his hoof ball to the left wing, to the man double and sometimes tripple marked for it to be headed down strategy
This gets peddled so often I get confused with GTFC 2015/16 with John Beck's Cambridge of the late 80s early 90s. Also, when fans reminisce about Billy Whitehurst and John Fashanu, we can tell them about the sharp elbowed colossus that was Andy Monkhouse. More rewriting of history than Stalinist Russia.

Yep I also used to get us confused - Although to be fair, completely bypassing the midfield every game did put us top of the league for a week or two soo it wasn't all bad

| Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong Update: I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly |

It's not a myth though. It happened, for a long time. It brought great success early on and should have been a great alternative at any point of the game. But it became the only tactic. For all the criticism of him, Monkhouse was incredibly good in the air. I'm actually struggling to recall any winger that I've seen who was as effective in the air as him. Against, usually, much smaller right-backs he was completely dominant. But it became easy to defend against, be it a centre-back playing in that role (because Monkhouse was never going to run at the defence with pace) or leaving him free to have the header knowing you've got an extra man to pick up the second ball.

ONLY tactic. I seem to remember Bogle and Amond got around 50 goals, Disley was bombing on from midfield. Arnold got the occasional worldy and Nolan was pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch post Christmas.
