Where there has been mumblings about Luke Charman there are many more 'double figures' goalscorers out there in the North and South leagues

NLS

Shaun Jeffers St Albans City 17 goals in 15 games (Forward)

Ryan Seager Hungerford Town 15 in 18 (Forward)

Alfie Rutherford Dorking Wanderers 12 in 15 (Forward)

Dominic Poleon Ebbsfleet United 10 in 18 (Forward)

Joan Luque Maidstone United 10 in 16 (Winger)

Adebayo Azeez Dartford 10 in 18 (Forward)

Cody Cooke Bath City 10 in 19 (Forward)

NLN

Glen Taylor Spennymoor Town 15 goals in 20 games (Forward) (Has scored 61 goals since start of 2017/18 season)

Nick Haughton AFC Fylde 13 in 19 (Midfielder)

Luke Charman Darlington 12 in 16 (Forward)

Marcus Carver Southport 12 in 17 (Forward) (Has scored 47 goals in 4 seasons)

Macaulay Langstaff Gateshead 11 in 14 (Forward)

Cedwyn Scott Gateshead 10 in 17 (Forward)

So there you are. Charman doesnt have to be the main target, there are plenty of others Hurst could have a look at, and they are just from 2 leagues.

A little bit more to recruitment than looking at the top scorers in the division(s) below and saying “I’ll have him if he’ll come”, no?

Shaun Jeffers is 29 and has had several spells above the regional divisions but has always struggled to score goals. Likewise Ryan Seager; he’s only ever scored consistently for Hungerford. Poleon similar too.

In the north Glen Taylor is 31. We’re not going to pay a sizeable fee for someone of that age. Carver is 28 and only ever played a handful of games at this level.

For several reasons, not least his age, but his youth pedigree and style of play, Charman looks the absolute standout to me. Will know Sousa too, for what it’s worth.

He was on Newcastle’s books until he was 22, and probably found himself released at the wrong time in that difficult summer of 2020. Looks to me like a kid who’s dropped further than he should have had to.

Bags a couple for the under-23s here straight after 1:30. I’d be very happy happy if we could get him.

Glen Taylor is an absolute superb forward, any team at our level or yours would welcome him.
Sadly, he’s paid an fortune at Spennymoor and has good income as a school teacher too. Can’t see him ever going full time.

Nick Haugton, again, is unreal. But I’d imagine Fylde are paying him a good sum.

To be fair to Seager he is another player who appears to have been stock piled by Southampton. Lots of goals since his release though.

Even if we could afford him, he’s a proper north-western boy isn’t he? He’s been at 11 different clubs, none of them more than an hour away Manchester.

If only it was that simple. Taylor is superb but has a very well paid 9-5 job that he isn't going to give up.

Poleon, Azeez and Luque don't excite me. They've slowly worked themselves down to that level.

Harry Cardwell is a decent striker in the NLN...

Loads of very talented lads playing non league in the North East after Sunderland and, to an extent, Newcastle scaled down their youth operations. I know of a couple playing for North Shields in the Northern League who gave up on the pro route, one came to Hull and then turned down a year at Burnley because he was disillusioned with seeming to be stuck in U23 set up.

I wasn't trying to say they are players we could go for, just that they are probably the current frontrunners for teams on the hunt for 'prolific' goalscorers this season.

There are obviously many more in other leagues across the UK and possibly Europe too if tendrils of scouting can get that far.

It would definitely be useful if Sousa (as long as he's happy here himself) could 'ave a word with Charman

That commentator had really done his homework on the teams hadn’t he… has absolutely no idea the name of the first goal scorer and simply describes him as “A player in black & white”!!
