Can't see many clubs willing to loan players out in January with all the uncertainty knocking around now.

Good luck to Hurst on that one and jeez are we desperate for reinforcements.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

And we’ll probably have to wait until late in the month until decisions are made.

Hopefully this bounces us into making proper mid-long term signings and not have to rely on kids for key positions.

Sod the loans. We need to buy.

Two of our rivals are fielding quarter mil forwards. If we are serious about getting out of this division any time soon we need top add to our attacking options.

Don't bring in a kid on loan. Buy a decent player. It will be an investment.

I am hoping that a fully fit Scannell and Grant will strengthen us, but we must add another goalscorer to the squad.

Ye good idea, there are literally hundreds of em knocking about that would love to come here!!!!!
Every window the fishy goes off it's ed.
We are not going to pay 250k + 4k in wages a week for anyone.
There are not any strikers of quality that would want to come here, as has been proved season after season.
We have got what we've got, loan players, youngster's and players to take a punt on just in case they come good.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I get most of your post but we have had decent strikers…funnily enough, almost all under Hursts management in the last 15 years…

But you’re right, we’re not going to drop £250k and £4K+ a week on a player for various reasons…people might not agree with those reason but it’s not going to change.

If we had continued as we started and were hovering around the top of the table then we would have had a better chance for slightly better loans or permanent signings coming here with the chance of getting promoted, but since we have almost reversed the early season form with mid-table insecurity, I now doubt we will be able to attract any more Towlers or Bells here in the coming months.

In fact the only good to come out of this maybe is if Hurst and Doig and our Scout/s have not had to isolate, then they will have a few weeks to get out there and scout some potential new players.

We are not the only club that has Covid cases.

The way it’s going right now I wouldn’t be surprised if the season was a write off.

Or conversely most of the team has recently had it so is less likely to go down with it again.

This is an interesting point that Andrew made on Humberside earlier this week. They have seemed to identify that they would prefer more long term 'fixes' this window. He cited the signing of Maguire-Drew to demonstrate that.

Hopefully see a few more long term additions in January,

I thought that the tone of the Pettit interview was signings as opposed to loans. I have never been a fan of having this many loans , Hurst made a big mistake here in my opinion.
Problem is that we need a mobile centre half,a central midfielder who is actually a better footballer and more creative than the ones we have got as well as another forward. Possibly a winger as well As I have no faith whatsoever in Scannel and  Grant This will be a tough January shopping list but the lack of signings preseason has created this problem. I am hopeful that Hurst will fix this, He will need to as his neck is on the line utm

Loans are very useful, important and necessary at this level. Towler came in under the ideal circumstances for a loan as we were without Pearson and Longe-King. As a result of various factors such as his success here, Covid, injuries at Bristol City and the fact we haven't got a game until 2022, he's been recalled but we were reaching a period of uncertainty with him anyway.

It's about balance, I want us to own a good team with 1 or 2 loans coming in to improve us.

I never think of buying a player at our level as an investment but more of a speculation. You never know if they will settle, repeat their success from their previous or get seriously injured (Liam Hearne springs to mind).

Heard Karl Robinson on talksport this morning and he confirmed that Oxford were initially looking to bring 2 players in and let 5 players leave during January but says this will be revised as they believe with the COVID problems they will need a larger squad to complete the season.

Might be a very difficult month to bring in players from the EFL.

Scannell is fully fit, I heard it from his own mouth at the Oaklands last weekend…he said his face just doesn’t fit, only came here for Holloway.

It seems suspicious to me that Scannell is suddenly fully fit as he's approaching the last 6 months of his deal. If his face didn't fit he would have been with Gibson, Morais, Rose and Jackson Jr.

The fact he was given the number 11 shirt suggests to me that Hurst had hopes for him this season.

He might be fit, but with about half an hours play all season he isn’t match fit.

As for face fitting, virtually every one of Holloway’s signings has been shown the door apart from him. I wouldn’t say that pointed to someone whose face didn’t fit.

Which means that, assuming you did actually talk with him, it is the usual ‘I am not playing because my face doesn’t fit’ horsesh8t that players often come out with because they haven’t dedicated themselves enough to their profession, or done the things asked of them, and so they come up with an excuse and blame somebody else.

The problem with good goalscorers is they're like gold dust and would cost a fortune. What Hurst needs to do is repeat his previous trick of unearthing another Amond - who we grabbed from under the radar because he wasn't even playing as a striker at the time we signed him!

The player we splashed cash out for was Bogle. That worked pretty well as I recall. We got promoted and then made £750k profit selling him.

I think that qualifies as a good investment.

TBH i am not expecting to much in this window,, we are too far behind Chesterfield  Notts co etc  in almost every department and would take a miracle to catch them . Hurst missed his chance to go for it back in the summer and failed big time . The only way to get out tis tin pot league is to spend  and pray . Its no good hoping luck will come our way . And even next year there will be 3/4 big spenders trying to get out of here and then there is the fool with lots of cash to put in to a team just like this year . It dont look good for us getting out of here if ever

To think we splashed a lot of that cash on players like Asante, Clements and Sam Jones who ended up being paid off or leaving for free.

Right. I’ll retract it. I mean, I’ve seen far, far worse on here in terms of ‘name calling’ that you haven’t commented on, but it’s your call Rob obviously. Maybe ‘semi literate’ would have been more accurate.  I love the range of views but this poster just spouts endless, draining negativity and criticism and doom and has done for years and years. It’s an absolutely tedious and pointless contribution. There’s no balance, or evolution of opinions or ever any credit or anything remotely hopeful.

It definitely sounds like we are going to spend money and look for players that are going to be here for the next 18 months or so at least. I’m not saying a lot of money but it sounds like that will be the approach going on what we have heard from PH, JS and AP.

Just looking at the squad you would expect there to be a goal scorer at the top of the list. We are stacked for wingers. Central midfield is light and worse still if Hunt leaves. Defence I think we can get away with - not sure we would spend any money we do have on a centre half when we have Waterfall, Pearson and DLK and I think we are sorted for full backs.

So, striker and quality central midfielder, please!

We are stacked for wingers however it's rather unfortunate that three of them happen to be Wright, Scannel and Grant who when you put them together you probably end up with 0.5 FTE winger.

I wouldn't want to rely on any of those so I think we need at least one left sided winger to ho along with two central midfielders to replace Coke and Hunt and the obvious requirement for a striker.

I always see loans as in the same boat as those on short-term deals, as in a year or less.  They're trying to impress to the point that they get a deal a look-in elsewhere.  It's a shop window kinda thing.   In terms of long-term planning, it's not ideal but on the other hand you've got a ready made incentive for them to impress (let's not get into an argument that they should always want to impress....).

As long as you've got a balance of a core that are part of that longer term plan and the shorter term players, some of whom may become part of the longer term vision, I think it's fine.  At the minute I can't say there's a noticeable imbalance.

When we went up in 2016 I'd argue that our 3 best performers that season were either on loan (Townsend), on a one-year contract (Amond) or a very short-term contract (Nolan).  If we came out of the transfer window with 3 players of the ilk of those 3 I would be very, very happy.

Scannell is fully fit, I heard it from his own mouth at the Oaklands last weekend…he said his face just doesn’t fit, only came here for Holloway.

Shame he didn't step up for his mate Holloway then, isn't it?

It was patently obvious at the start of the season we were at least 2 players short.Whilst we started off o.k it was glaringly obvious the squad was very light.

However Hurst was like a rabbit stuck in the headlights. His failure to address the situation in July was incompetent. What makes you think he will remedy the situation in January?

Was it?

Can't say I was worried about a lightweight squad when we were winning most weeks and smashing goals in from all areas of the pitch.

Well where are we now?it was quite apparent given one or two injuries we would be struggling and what are we doing?,

Must have missed your warning to Hurst.

The last couple of months have been worrying. We aren't as bad as November/December suggests nor, as it turns out (unless we all had your amazing foresight), are we as good as August/September/October.

A couple of reinforcements should see a 5th/6th place finish.

unfortunately a series of short term results is overshadowing the long term picture. I think most of us were a little worried at the start of the season we were light in some areas despite a large rebuild over the summer and then we have a massive winning streak followed by a large losing streak but if you look at it overall we're 10/2/7 and in playoff mix which I think is where "most" fans would hope us to be before a ball was kicked in anger.

Now I'm not trying to understate our recent bad run of form which need to change sharpish but if the losses had been mixed into the winning streak I think a lot less people would be bemoaning where we are atm.

I agree and I don’t think it’s lightweight now. Underperforming, yes, but probably has way more depth than most squads in this division.

We spanked the bottom team and Barnet after they went down to ten. Other than those, we only beat teams by two due to late goals.

Do late goals not count then? Blimey, that would change footballing history.

Please look at my past posts,I have always stated that our sucess depended on the understanding between McCattee and Taylor, invidualy they are quite good, together they have an understanding that is unplayable, quite obvious when one or another was not available LJL was not going to an adequate replacement for their style of play.No plan B and everything predicated on McCattee/Taylor being available, think a 12 year old could see that.

You go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Unplayable??? Really? They linked up well, but so did Sousa alongside them and Efete behind them. They formed an impressive combination during the early games but were hardly Shearer and Sheringham.

There must be a whole load of 12 year olds that fancy replacing PH.

Shame McCattee never got to play in the same team as Coulbeck and McKreth.

Well in nearly 60 years of watching town the closest there has ever been to Tees Green partnership why do you think they were both sold to Charlton. but then again I should defer to your superior knowledge.

We are playing in the 5th tier of English football and they linked well for half a dozen games. You are telling me that they are the second best partnership you have seen in 60 years of watching Town? Off the top of my head Rees/Woods or Jones/Reddy?

I am sure there are so many more. They were just two that immediately sprang to mind.

When I think of combinations and link up play I always remember the interplay between Rees, Childs and McDermott.

Ryan Loft apparently off to Colchester from Scunny for £50k. I’d have a punt on him at that price.

Anyway, wonder if we’ll be able to dust off the Siriki Dembele thread this Jan? Not that we’ll see any money out of it like.

If Dembele is sold, that's us closer to having the shackles taken off but it also means another how many transfer windows of discussing the possibility of more Dembele money rolling in as we will get a percentage of the Peterborough sell-on I imagine.

Yeah, straight into the pocket of Scrooge Fenty, think it came out that any future transfer money would go to Fenty as part of the agreement of sale?

Think you are missing the point. Some people seem to believe we will get a sell on fee for Dembele, but we won't. Not unless he signs another contract with Posh in the next 6 months and is sold by them in the subsequent seasons after that.

At the end of the season, he is a free agent and can go where he pleases for nothing and that is where our involvement ends.

Most sell-ons continue until the chain is broken so if Dembele leaves on a free in the summer which is looking most likely then we won't get a penny more. However, if Peterborough sell him for a fee and insert a sell-on clause themselves, that is usually passed on. So if we have a 25% sell-on and Peterborough get £2m from any negotiated sell-on in the future then we would get £500k of that.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I can’t picture that being right in any way. What about 3 or 4 clubs down the line? Why would we be entitled to any part of a deal negotiated by two clubs who would’ve never spoken to anyone at GTFC? Just seems ridiculous - the clause would be to incentivise that first deal, not to act as a percentage to be doled out in perpetuity until the player retires.

Didn't we get/or were hoping to get some extra money from Ryan Bennett in this way?

When he went from Peterborough to Norwich we got our entitled sell-on fee, let's say 25%.  Then when he was linked with transfers away from Norwich, I seem to remember Arsenal at one point, there was hope we would get 25% of Peterborough's 25%.

Also seem to think a few lower league/Conference clubs have had decent windfalls recently from other diluted sell-on fees a couple of transfers down the line.

Regardless, with Peterborough in a relegation scrap I can't see them looking to off-load one of their prized assets.  Nor can I see anyone stumping up big cash for him with six months left on his current deal.  Faint hope that Newcastle's new wealth will see them just throw everything at staying up with a Harry Redknapp style splurge this month....very faint hope.

i think there are numerous different sell on % types.

Percentage of next sale (say 25% on the sale of Ryan from Peterboro to Norwich we would get 25% of the transfer fee)

Sell on Percentage of next sale (this is based on the next selling clubs % so if we had a 25% sell on %, and Peterboro sold him to Norwich who also had their own % we would get a % of Peterboro's % if Norwich had the same 25% sell on then Norwich would get their 25%, and Peterboro and GY would also get an additional %)

Personally not sure JF knew what he was doing when comes to transfer / contract negotiations.

I would have thought the most common mechanic for such deals would be a % share of ANY revenue made from future sales of the player.

Having a deal based on an initial transfer fee only leaves you open to all kinds of shíthousery, e.g. club sells player for £1 with an incremental fee of £5m after one appearance.

Obviously in the case of Dembele any such chain is broken when he leaves Peterborough as a free agent. Even if he were to go this month, our cut would now be fairly paltry. Our cash cow was slaughtered in the summer.

A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner.

I don't think he knew too much about running a football club either.

I think we might sign another striker, but I thought that in the summer and we didn't...

Maybe have a gamble on Kyle Hudlin from Solihull? Good in the air 😂

As I previously mentioned as did somebody else on a list of National league North and South goal scorers, I still feel Alfie Rutherford of Dorking Wanderers has to be worth following; 2 more goals yesterday.

He is a strong running powerful player with great drive and individual skill, as he showed in the YouTube video I posted last time, of his goal away at Southend in the FA Cup.

I know others in that league have scored more, but I believe that he has in the past 3 months really gained confidence and looks cool and assured around the opposition's goal.

Brilliant

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Looks good but the usual concerns:

- Born in Portsmouth. Only ever played in the south (Hants, Surrey)
- Has a second job as a roofer. Would require a relatively high wage from us and long contract.

Then the biggie…

- Rutherford has a heart condition and has been advised not to play football
