Can see it now....no game until 3rd Jan and government will announce all sports events to be played behind closed doors!..
Thoughts are with the players and their families because no doubt this has completely f@cked up their Xmas..

On the positive front for the players, they’ll be able to spend more time with their families and relax a bit more.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Surely it’s time to call off the season or play behind closed doors. It’s far too dangerous for playing football at the moment. I say we follow sturgeon, she leads and Johnson follows

That would be very premature and over the top imo.

Why have the management for the second season running allowed the squad to become susceptible to the bug. I have been jabbed and boosted, been in my local and taken precautions. So far I have remained clean from the bug.

If we end up relegated because of this, I am afraid we will be like Aldershot and Southport. A football wasteland!

If anything, despite the actions of the Jocks and the Welsh, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Omicron is going to cause mass hospitalisation and / or death in this country.

I would say with some confidence right now that it’s unlikely we’ll see games in England played behind closed doors. There are going to be fixture headaches as a result of the next three or four weeks, but little more than that.

I do think this temporary cessation of play for Town could be a good thing. As and when we regroup and play our next game, it’s a fresh start.

Could well be a fresh team if all the loanees return to their parent clubs and we are left with half a team of first XI

Ironically we’ll still be short of players come the Halifax game at home…

It was inevitable but for me, the lack of Christmas games puts a dampener on the time of year for me. We knew it was coming though…no point moaning or arguing the pros and cons of vaccines or mass testing or whatever else, it’s happened. intercourse all we can do…

It is quite clear that any football beneath EFL will become null and void by the end of feb when they realise that fixtures can’t realistically be completed.

Regardless of fans being let in, the amount of testing that people are demanding will find that many asymptomatic cases in ‘healthy’ players , staff , referees that games will be called off in their droves throughout winter.

Mass testing = mass cases

Go back to minimal testing and just crack on or forever be in this perpetual hell

When you come out of the Wellington Arms, where Grimsby Pelham we’re formed, take a look at Fremo Street. It’s derelict. Nothing. There is no investment, in the town or club.

Case numbers lower than five days back, most experts predicting mild/no symptoms, most in ICU unvaccinated, most others in hospital catching it in there.

I’ll put my neck on the line for you!

Grimsby will come out of this bug postponement in 13th place, with a depleted squad, and no incoming striker. We will be mediocre for the rest of the season and finish well off the play offs.

To think JF left the club when the takeover was being done well above relegation in the EFL, Last December, it’s a disgrace what has happened.

The fans wanted JF out, you got JF out. Now live with it.

Here’s a thing about the bug affecting our squad and postponing matches.

Leeds United had a medical staff member parent die from the bug, the whole team, and those involved with the club resolved they would be vaccinated as a tribute to this.

Why has Grimsby allowed the bug to rip through the team for the second dart throwing season running?

Regardless of what most experts are predicting .... the ones who have the governments ears are the most risk averse on the planet and it’s those who strike the fear of god into them with bleak outlooks and worst case scenarios.

So hopefully I am wrong and it’s all rosy by end of jan but I doubt it as the mass testers want their pound of flesh

Andrew Pettit stated last night that our squad is in line with most teams in the country with around 80% of our players vaccinated.

We almost certainly don't have a leg to stand on legally if we insist players get vaccinated and I'm not sure how insisting any new players that come in are vaccinated will stand up in a court of law either.

Terrible wind up.

People do realise that vaccinated people are just as likely to contract it as non vaccinated ?? If you have been in contact with a person with this new strain you must isolate even with both jabs ..

The plea to have the squad fully vaccinated is pointless as tests will still give a positive reading regardless of vaccine status , they will just be less likely to be hospitalised.

1 nil to the mass testers

Andrew Pettit stated last night that our squad is in line with most teams in the country with around 80% of our players vaccinated.

We almost certainly don't have a leg to stand on legally if we insist players get vaccinated and I'm not sure how insisting any new players that come in are vaccinated will stand up in a court of law either.

Leeds are fully vaccinated. That is 100%.

They all get a bath together after a match.  If they win they get soap and water.

I think you’ll find that the bath, what remains of it, has been out of use since HIV.

Case numbers lower than five days back, most experts predicting mild/no symptoms, most in ICU unvaccinated, most others in hospital catching it in there.

My theory on why cases are lower is because some workplaces that have implemented testing will have shut down for Christmas now and some people with symptoms will be choosing not to get tested as it ruins their Christmas.

I don’t know if this is serious or you’re just battered like a Steels haddock but HIV has been around since at least the 1950s (possibly as early as the 1920s).

I bathed in those baths in the 90s.

Covid is a flu at worst at this point. Back before covid existed, it would be flu that either killed off the old and vulnerable or led to them having something worse, like pneumonia, which would ultimately kill somebody. The difference is, we never mass tested for flu, we just lived, people knew the risks of going to a game and potentially sitting next to somebody with a nasty cold and catching it, and those risks are no different now. The majority of people who test positive for covid are absolutely fine, they just get told to isolate to save somebody who’s 100 years old with a deteriorating body. I’m sorry if this sounds selfish, but we’ve never done that before, so why now? If mass testing stopped, covid would literally just become flu. The governments mass scaremongering doesn’t help either, when they say there’s been 200 covid related deaths in a day, you’re supposed to think that yet another 200 people have struggled for a breath on a ventilator for weeks, before taking their last one, when in reality if you test positive for covid and die within 28 days, you go down as a covid death. In Australia, there was a news report that somebody who got shot went down as a covid death, it’s laughable at this point! So why would they do that? Why would they tell everybody they need all these jabs, just to lock us down again? “The jabs protect you, but we cannot rule out restrictions” it’s time we just got on with it, we can’t do this forever.

I’m also expecting to be called selfish for posting this, however, if somebody is willing to call me selfish just think, are you the selfish one? For wanting people who don’t want and definitely don’t need a jab against covid, to get the jab so they can be part of society? Are you the selfish one for calling for more restrictions and possibly a full lockdown, which in turn could kill a lot of peoples hard worked businesses, and destroy people’s mental health when they can’t see friends and loved ones and do the things they love? At the end of the day, we’re all people with fully functioning brains, we know the risks, and like Matt Le Tissier said, if you feel scared to go to football then don’t go, simple. Don’t stop the rest of the country, who want to go to football, from going and enjoying their life. I doubt we will be playing many, if any, games in front of crowds from now on this season and to me it’s a complete overreaction. Call me what you will, unfortunately people have been dying from things like covid, flu, pneumonia etc. For years, and years, and years… Death is a horrible thing, and it’s sad that it happens, but it’s unavoidable, and if you are in the vulnerable or elderly category, and you are fully vaccinated and don’t feel safe going to the football, I completely understand and respect that, but like I have said, don’t be the selfish one and try and tell people what THEY should and shouldn’t be doing because of this.

Time to stop with the testing, stop with the (let’s all be honest here) pointless vaccine passports (because vaccines were brought in to help lessen the effects for the elderly and vulnerable, not eliminate covid all together, that will never happen, it’s impossible), and stop with any form of restrictions. Time to live just like we did 3 years ago, with absolutely no restrictions, no worries, and no scaremongering by the government. You can book a plane and go abroad the next day, no hassle. Go to football without a QR code, same with pubs, restaurants and if you’re in Germany, soon it will be shops! No need for any of this, time to live. Sounds nice that, doesn’t it? A life with no worries, or possibilities of new restrictions? A life where you can live as freely as you want while taking your own risks? A life of simple choices and freedoms… what happened…

Haha, it wasn't a player, some staff member doing a tour. And parents were there, which I assume was the intention of the statement because I had no concept of what HIV was as a sprog.

I agree that we need to get on with it, but saying it's now the same as influenza is not correct. In a bad year the UK has 30k deaths from flu and on a 'good' year it's about 10k. Covid deaths this year are about 73k. That's with mass vaccination and lockdowns which we don't do for the flu. The last 6 months, when most people were vaccinated is 20k deaths and that's not including the winter months which are by far the worst for respiratory diseases.

The argument that some deaths within 28 days of a test are not covid related is true. But also some covid patients are sick for longer than 28 days and others get killed by something else because covid has weakened their immune system to a huge extent. To claim covid has no part in these deaths is as deceitful as the statements that "most people in hospital are unvaccinated" etc.

Omicron may or may not be less deadly than other variants. It's really difficult to know this early on, although it looks positive. But the speed at which it is spreading is a big concern because it is clearly much faster at spreading and being half as deadly is irrelevant if it is spreading twice as fast.

And the numbers that are being reported are going to stall. We've reached testing capacity so not everybody is able to get a test who wants one. That's going to mean a higher percentage of positive cases slip through the net. And I would imagine some people are reluctant to get tested if they don't feel too unwell with it being Christmas week and not wanting to isolate.

Back to football. We are the only club in the National League with games off on these two dates. Our area currently has one of the lowest Covid rates in the country. The self isolation period has been reduced from 10 to 7 days  which was flagged as likely before the games were called off meaning those who were not available at Stockport would be likely to be..But don’t worry all is well at our club.

Just because the isolation period is over doesn't make you fit to play. I trained with my team 2 days after my isolation period had ended from a mild case of covid and I coughed so hard that I tore an intercostal muscle.

Clearly something isn't right at the club, but not everything is an indication of that.

73k Covid deaths.

How many died with Covid and how many died because of Covid? How many died because of serious comorbidities? If you look at many weeks during the summer, the actual death rate was lower than average.
The phrase ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’ springs to mind. Every death is very sad and many families have reason to blame Covid for a family member’s passing but for others it was one of a number of causes.
Let’s just hope that Omicron does prove to be weaker and that the 95+% of us with antibodies can get us to the herd immunity we need.

Surely it’s time to call off the season or play behind closed doors. It’s far too dangerous for playing football at the moment. I say we follow sturgeon, she leads and Johnson follows

It’s rare I agree with our friend Pen but I do side with him on some of this but also, I find myself tired of covid. Tired of the constant discussion or the now polarised views of folks leading to irrelevant and constant arguments. The faffing about for what? Very little in truth.

Rules that have been inconsistently applied, implemented and generally not at the appropriate times. It’s all very tiring. There are, in my opinion, things that have happened, at government level and local level that needed closer attention but haven’t and they’ve all gotten away with it. People will disagree but for me, these things needed equal billing on news for instance…the e social care bill is one example, the political agenda and nonsense from ofsted and the DfE crucifying a profession for what? Stress and anxiety of the workers but minute political gain…

The ongoing farce that is leaving Europe and so the list goes on…

Back to football though, this was inevitable really, it’s frustrating but it’s happened…no point having a go at each other or the club…

The death rate being lower doesn't mean that people weren't dying of Covid. And do you not think there's a very strong chance that the reason the death rate is lower is because Covid has killed a load more people than normal over the last 2 years? That does suggest that these people were going to die soon anyway, and I've always been against the measures we've taken, but it doesn't change the fact that Covid has killed a lot more people than flu does. Let's not forget that the impact of lockdowns dramatically reduced the spread of other diseases that typically cause a lot of deaths and these have been lower throughout the year due to the low starting point.

Take the death rate of seasonal flu in 2019-2020 for 18-49 year old it's 1.6 deaths per 100k. For Covid that is 2 at the young end and 40 at the high end. Taking the middle point of that data puts Covid 13 times more deadly. This is an age group that we don't vaccinate for flu and have for Covid. You aren't seriously trying to claim that they're making the numbers 13 times bigger for Covid by people getting run over by a bus and having deaths completely unrelated to Covid?

Back to football. We are the only club in the National League with games off on these two dates. Our area currently has one of the lowest Covid rates in the country. The self isolation period has been reduced from 10 to 7 days  which was flagged as likely before the games were called off meaning those who were not available at Stockport would be likely to be..But don’t worry all is well at our club.

Do you think you could go out and play a competitive game of football after seven days in the confines of a 3 bed semi or even worse, digs? A large portion of that will have been feeling rough and many of your teammates will have gone through the same too so lets not put players having Covid down as further evidence all is not well.

Maybe you would have preferred the club to call Halifax off at 11am on Boxing Day whilst you were sat on the M62?

The total overreaction by some on this forum over the last few weeks

I've seen some people post that we need a full lockdown immediately!

The season will be null and void in a few weeks!

Every remainder game this season will be played behind closed doors!

Total overreaction because...

we've had Omicron for over 2 weeks now in this country, hospitalisations normally lag 2 weeks behind, it's over 2 weeks and we are still yet to see hospitalisations rise dramatically (apart from London), last 7 day average cases are up 63% and hospitalisations up only 2%, also cases look like they may be levelling off now (but I do accept we need a few more days of below 100k to really draw that conclusion) but even if they aren't leveling off, it is clear that they aren't rising as quickly as they did when we first detected Omicron 2 weeks ago.

SAGE and In particular Neil Ferguson's projections all the way through this pandemic have ended up being horribly horribly wrong.

All of the above makes me think we don't need anymore restrictions, and nothing will change my mind as if we need more restrictions after the 2 jabs and booster then where's the way out? It's about time we get back to normal now and leave it to personal choice, we are capable of personal choice as we have already seen people cancel Christmas parties and limit their contact etc up to Christmas. No more restrictions needed!

On the 7th December, there were 45k cases reported and the 7 day moving average was 43k-45k for the 7 days previously. So Omicron/the increase in cases hasn't been a relevant factor for 2 weeks yet.

Omicron was prevalent in London before anywhere else, so that is where you would see the first increase in hospitalisations and as you say we've already started to see that there.

Funny how you can see the same statistics and conclude everything is ok, yet the things you're saying are either contradicted or inconclusive from the data and time frame.

I didn't say everything was "ok" of course we are still at a a critical stage but from what I've seen and listening to other professors etc (not from Sage who have always been horribly wrong) they mostly seem to share the same view that we should be ok without further restrictions.

Have a look at the twitter conversation Fraser Nelson the journalist had with Graham Medley from SAGE, also whilst you are at it have a look at Prof Neil Ferguson's predictions over the last 20 years to the present day on numerous different illnesses such as Bird Flu, Swine Flu etc and Covid and look how very wrong he always has been.

I'm not going to look at a twitter thread to see one scientist back up your point of view. Most of the scientists have been massively wrong with every prediction they've made. Some have been right about some things. It all just seems like plucking numbers out of the air and it's boring listening to the doomsday predictions just as much as it is listening to the people that try to minimise the impact that Covid has had. As a percentage for young people, the death rate is fairly small, but as a society it is high enough to have devastated our health care capacity.

I'd rather we stopped pumping money into the economy to prop us up for more lockdowns and spent it on hospitals so that we're prepared to meet the demand that not locking down will bring.

Years of under investment in the NHS can not be resolved in the short to medium term. It would be like turning the Titanic in McDonald's car park.

The increase in number of positive cases has also increased with the number of tests being carried out. Over the last week there is an average of 6% of all tests that have been done that have resulted in a positive result. That means that 94% of those tested have not been identified as having Covid.

I have read the article mentioned above and it is interesting in that SAGE would appear to only report on those scenarios which give a significant rise in the number of hospitalisations and deaths. The scenarios that adjust for a reduced severity would suggest a small rise in the number of people going into hospitals and those dying. However, the argument for not presenting these to the government is that there would be no decision to make on lockdown or restrictions so they don't need to know these. The media also don't want to know about these scenarios as they cannot sensationalise them.

Amazingly, think the government has got this right in that no restrictions being considered until the severity data starts to show the effect of the new variant !!

My employer has insisted only fully vaccinated people will continue to be employed. Quite a lot of others have gone down this route too. Refusal to comply is cited as gross misconduct for failing to protect the health and safety of other employees.
These are very large multinational companies, I don’t think they would do this without the best legal advice.

Just because the isolation period is over doesn't make you fit to play. I trained with my team 2 days after my isolation period had ended from a mild case of covid and I coughed so hard that I tore an intercostal muscle.

Clearly something isn't right at the club, but not everything is an indication of that.

Why do you assume they all ill 95% of positive cases from random testing have no symptoms and those who have been in contact are not required to self isolated provided they are jabbed. That is why football in general will be carrying on.

This. Totally this.

Accept we will need a bigger NHS bed capacity and ICU capacity from now on if we are to remain as unlocked as possible.

That would be good but there isn’t a stock of doctors and nurses sat in the shelf waiting to join the NHS. Increases in capacity need to be planned well ahead of the expected need.

But, yes we need to expand capacity and readiness for the next pandemic disease.

We don't need more doctors. The NHS is ridiculously inefficient. I was in there A&E for 11 hours, after 5 hours in the waiting room I saw a doctor. After speaking to me and waiting for X-rays, that doctor spoke to 1 other patient in the 6 hours before I was discharged. The rest of the time he was sat at a computer. There were about 5 other doctors on the ward all sat at computers. Get somebody else to do the admin and let doctors treat patients.

It seems unvaccinated players are being seen as a problem by Premier League bosses with Klopp saying he won't sign unvaccinated players as they are a problem.

Steven Gerrard said Villa would likely take vaccination status into account when signing players. Most teams probably will.

Spot on Realist.
In over 40 years in the Merchant Navy I was required to be in possession of a valid International Vaccination Certificate showing protection against multiple diseases.
It was never an issue for me to be regularly vaccinated as common sense prevailed - (& kept my job)
I am currently triple jabbed to not only to protect myself & others but to alleviate the load on the NHS.
To refuse to be vaccinated - because you can - seems to be somewhat pig headed & indefensible.

Really?
So if 100 % vaccination is achieved the virus would be eradicated?
And please explain from a employers perspective how they would enforce vaccination without becoming liable to a discrimination claim been lodged?

It’s not perfect but it’s a damn sight more efficient than any other system.

You must be in a right backwater, unusually over-staffed hospital.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

This completely, the nurses and doctors are the real NHS heroes, but as for the administration/ pen pushers that’s where the NHS falls down, and this is speaking from experience of having an operation last year and also from being a regular at the out patient department.

I’ll be there too mate. But you genuinely do need a covid pass.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

And please explain from a employers perspective how they would enforce vaccination without becoming liable to a discrimination claim been lodged?

I work for a global company and since October, if we are double vaccinated have had to show our covid pass and if you are unvaccinated you have to show a negative LFT each day. This is being reviewed in January and the rumour is if you're unvaccinated then you can't go in the office although personally I think it's similar to the rumour about Hurst applying for the Stockport job, a load of bobbins. The unvaccinated taking a daily LFT are probably more safe than vaccinated just showing they had a jab anyway. Nobody has lodged a claim of discrimination as yet.

In all honesty I'm not fussed either way. I'm boosted, a bit put out that they don't believe me just saying I'm vaccinated and want to see a barcode but there you go, not a massive inconvenience for me. The benefits of my job outweigh the hassle of having to get my phone out to show them when I do go the office.

Scotland is going in to semi lockdown very soon and to date there have been…………..14 cases of hospitalisation with Omicron.

Data from SA who are a month ahead of the UK, and with virtually 100% of COVID cases being Omicron, shows reduced hospitalisations through this variant.

The majority of symptomatic affects of Omicron present like a common cold.

I thought that we were following the data?

I wish I was making it up. But what would be my motivation for that? It did happen and it was in a large hospital, not in the middle of nowhere. And there were people waiting that had it much worse.

Because it’s a well established and done-to-death method of attacking the nhs without being seen to attack doctors and nurses. It’s never nurses that are the problem, it’s always “middle managers”, “back room staff”, “unnecessary admin” that are the problems. All things/people that you can never put a face to, conveniently.

This has been the line for as long as I can remember from people ideologically driven to moving towards an insurance based healthcare system and greater private (ie profit seeking) involvement, and then parroted uncritically from those who swallow it.

As for the myth of private sector efficiency, see how you get on trying to claim for a couple of hundred quid for car damage. Then imagine that for hundreds of thousands of pounds of medical expenses. See how much admin’s involved there.

Funny how last week most Premier matches were off due to Covid yet hardly any Trophy games. This week Premier matches on but most lower games off - slightly confused. Are Covid results being manipulated to suit ? Have the rich clubs discovered a cure for Covid ?

Maybe stricter testing regimes in the PL identifying outbreaks earlier and they have now overcome the isolation period.
Lower leagues less testing & slower to identify cases so possibly these outbreaks are appearing this week.
Or maybe as you say, a conspiracy theory??

Edit: two PL games now postponed.

There are 2 games already off in The Prem on Boxing Day and I wouldn't be surprised to see more cancelled before (or even on) the day.

Surely it’s time to call off the season or play behind closed doors. It’s far too dangerous for playing football at the moment. I say we follow sturgeon, she leads and Johnson follows

Well looking at the reaction to this post it's obvious that the concept of sarcasm and humour is lost on many and it's a bloody shame.

I remember going to The Shay in the late 1960's and, although BP wasn't great at that time, I thought I had passed through a time portal to Victorian times. Then again I visited Meadow Lane about the same time and that wasn't much better!
