BP back in the day

How great does the old ground look? I didn't get to my first Town game until 95 so missed out on the old girl looking like this. Just looks "right" with the whole ground enclosed, even if 3 corners were uncovered. Wish we'd made the corners seated and put a roof on instead of getting rid of them entirely. Ahh nostalgia for a time I never saw!

I look back at old photos of my wife with the same sentiment.

It's weird, but that's how I still see the ground in my minds eye. I spent a period of time watching from the open corner between the Pontoon and the Findus before they were taken out.

One thing I noticed on Saturday is that the old scoreboard pillars have been removed. I checked on YouTube match highlights and they were removed between the Notts County & Southend games.

It’s good to see little jobs finally being done around BP that aren’t critical but improve the match day experience.

When did removing old pillars get you 3 points? The cost to remove those could have paid the wages of Tshimanga for a week.

Looking back at the photos, it's remarkable how fresh the steel of the Main and Osmond stand roof looks; likewise the concrete in the Osmond. By the looks of it, in one photo there's the 91/92 team photo being taken there - was the ground given a bit of a makeover around that time?

Anyway, on a boring Sunday evening it got me watching some old Town footage, and I found this video of Town v Millwall in 79/80 (5 or 6 years before I was born) quite intriguing. A few observations:

1. Right before kick-off the players do a little twirly thing and throw their arms up in the air, which gets a big reaction from the crowd. It was clearly customary at the time, but what was that all about?

2. Chants of 'Mariners' are clearly audible, but it doesn't sound like it does today. It's softer and a bit more tuneful - "Maaah-rin-ers" rather than "Marrrh-inners". I'm sure I remember hearing it like that as a nipper in the early 90s, but interesting to hear how it's changed.

3. There's another popular chant of "I-O Grimsby, Grimsby I-O" - dunno, just assumed that kind of chant was more modern no particular reason. Thinking about it now, it does actually sound quite old school.

4. Despite being over 40 years ago, the ground is still easily recognisable as Blundell Park. Obviously the camera angle is lower as it pre-dates the Findus, and all of the standing areas are long since gone, but surely few grounds have changed as little in that timespan as BP.

5. The pitch is better than it was last season. Apparently we didn't furlough the groundsman that year.

Also "Get into 'em" - feels like that probably has some pretty old school heritage too. At this level though it's rare that any side has possession long enough for it to work. It's to scrappy and end-to-end.

Probably quite a few old chants which have fallen by the wayside when you think about it.

Like a number of other clubs, we stole the famous “Pompey Chimes” from Portsmouth: “I-O Pompey, Pompey I-O”. Still, not as bad as Liverpool plagiarising the Blaydon Races and singing of “Bill Shankly’s Aces”!

I believe there’s a Bill Shankly connection to the Grimsby IO song as well. It’s the same tune as the chimes at St James church and he came up with some words for it I think.

Was that the year Millwall tried to take the Pontoon? They didn’t last long, about twenty of them in green parkers if I remember rightly? Anyone else remember that or is my mind getting confused?

They were removed a couple of days before the Southend game. I went in the Osmond for the first time in years for that game and sat right behind the goal, Got a great close up view of Taylor passing the ball into the net. The rest of the game was a bit drab however.

I might be wrong but didn’t the “We only sing when we’re fishing” start the night we beat Everton? I was behind the Osman goal that night and clearly recall Everton fans start the chant you only sing when you’re fishing and we immediately adopted it.

Memory is a funny thing so might be a load of balderdash but that’s how I recall things. Personally used to like “we will follow the Grimsby over land &sea”.

There have been some great club songs over the years. Obviously the most famous is ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, but I wonder if Liverpool supporters would cope as well with it if they didn’t have Gerry and the Pacemakers playing in the background. Others that come to mind are ‘Blue Moon’ (Manchester City), Blaydon Races (Newcastle), ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles (West Ham), Delilah Stoke), ZCars theme (Everton), Sussex By the Sea (Brighton), Goodnight Irene (Bristol Rovers) and Drink Up Thy Cider (Bristol City). Forest Green should really lay claim to the latter as the Worzels came from Nailsworth. I suppose ’Sing When We’re Fishing’ is the nearest that we’ve got to a club anthem, but it you don’t hear it much nowadays. ‘Up the Mariners’ gets the occasional airing, but, as with all football songs, supporters tend to struggle with more than a couple of choruses. ‘The Lincolnshire Poacher’ would make a great club song. Perhaps we should grab it before one of our county neighbours beats us to it.

It doesn't look great at all. A wooden Main Stand with an orchard of roof supports and an upper Findus tier that only covers half the length of the pitch. With the open terraces, BP was slightly less of an embarrassment than it is now.

Messrs Stockwood and Pettit, if you are reading this, please drag the club into the 21st century by building a stadium like Doncaster's Keepmoat:

Your memory of that night is the same as mine. Everton sung it to taunt us and we fired it back after Mick Brolley’s brace. I had this conversation with a friend a couple of months back, I’m pretty sure we’d never sung it before that night but it quickly became our anthem.

Easy peasy - set fire to BP - claim on the insurance - get found out as an arsonist go to jail & hey ho a brand new stadium rises for the ashes.

I found Donny’s Keepmoat one of the most boring designed new stadiums Ive been in, mainly due to all sides being of equal size. For me you need one home stand to be bigger than the rest to help generate a volume of noise.
On the other note , Grimsby I oh was a loud popular chant in the day and still popular with Pompey. Also anyone remember the jock guy who used to yell …now give me a GGGGGGG, RRRRRR and so on until he got to ….and what have you f…….. got !

Well I was in the main stand that night with a group of friends of one of the fringe players - think George fed the selected players champagne before entering the arena.
Anyhow, first half was fantastic - when Brian Kidd scored second half - nervous times -  but they saw it out.
Brilliant win - then Wolves - same again for me in the Main Stand.
Other than that -was always a Barrett stander

That makes no sense at all. Four stands of equal height is best for atmosphere. Most of the noise generated by the upper Findus goes over the Main Stand and is lost to the estuary.

I haven't finished criticising Blundell Park yet: pitches should ideally be aligned north to south, with the benches on the west side. BP's alignment is more east-west, so the Main Stand ought to have been on the south side. You often see managers on the touchline shielding their eyes from the sun.

The club had a chance to correct that mistake in 1982, but for some reason the Findus Stand was not equipped with changing rooms. Probably penny pinching.

Give it a rest now.

The acoustics in there are great and when the corner was standing it made a great atmosphere .
I was in there against Spurs when we have them the corner and Town had the rest of the stand , they still had 1800 just in that corner on those days , I think the crowd was nearly 18000.

When I sit in the Main stand these days I still look at that small bit of terrace left in the osmand corner and wish it was still allowed to be used

I'm sorry, but that is a bizarre statement to make. Let me guess: you think the Keepmoat is soulless because it doesn't have one stand twice the height of the rest of the ground.

The top of the Pontoon Stand is roughly the same height as the first row of the upper Findus.  If Town had a new stadium like Donny, then the view from the back row will be about the same as upper row E. That is plenty high enough.

You should not need to sit 35 rows above the pitch to enjoy a game of football.

You certainly don't need to see the estuary from inside the ground.

There was alot more than 1800 in that corner when Sheffield Utd came in the FA Cup in 79. They had the whole Osmond and I reckon there was getting on for 5k packed in that day.

Similar amount in 83 when Wednesday came on Boxing Day - in fact that day I think they had to open the gates and let some in for free, scary really looking back.

That statement still rankles with me.  Are you saying the Keepmoat is soulless because it isn't surrounded by houses?  A stadium with community facilities must have a fully accessible perimeter.

A ground at Freeman Street, whether it is an enclosed bowl or four separate stands, would not be soulless.  Freemo is a chance to have a smart new arena with a similar matchday atmosphere to Blundell Park.  Alas, Stockwood and Pettit appear to have made no comment about that.

Largest that I can really remember in the osmond are that Tottenham game and Stoke in 91. Pretty sure Bolton (opening day 3-3) rammed it too.

I always thought the pontoon and osmond were really weird having a few rows of seats until I started going away to games and realising that other grounds weren’t the same as ours.

If I could have a 15k stadium of choice it would be based on Northampton Saints RFC - a big side stand with paddock terracing and big stand at one end, the rest low but fully enclosed - keeps the noise in really well.

I’d pick the Altrad stadium Montpellier personally.

York City’s new ground has all 4 stands of a different size.  You can clearly see this.

Talking of Kevin Kilmore above.  He did have one outstanding game that lead to a very special day out.  In 1980 Town were losing 2-0 at Chesterfield in an FA Cup 2nd round replay.  Kevin Kilmore then scored a hat-trick.  

This feat earned us a trip to Liverpool (who were dominating Europe) in front of around 50,000 fans.  
Including 12,000 Town fans, some of whom could not get in Anfield.

Don’t think your memory is correct as we beat Sheffield United 2-0, I think, in rd2 before drawing Liverpool, well that’s how I remember things and bizarrely we beat the same opposition on 9/11 before drawing Liverpool again in the League Cup and the famous victory.

I agree that Doncaster ground doesn't have the character that blundell park has but its much more enjoyable to watch a game in that stadium, much easier to go get a drink or half time food, toilets are not a disgrace and doesn't have any posts blocking your view of the game either

Rotherham’s New York Stadium is slightly smaller than the Keepmoat but appears larger due to having a large main stand running the full length of the pitch so from the outside appears a 25000 seater . Having been in both its miles better than the Keepmoat , stills looks decent with a smaller crowd and the tapered end behind the goal allows for the income that clubs with a decent away following could give you

Let's imagine for one crazy moment the club was able to demolish some houses and the council gave permission for redevelopment.  Would you be happy with a Keepmoat on the site of Blundell Park?

Who cares what the stadium would look like from the outside.

As long as every seat had an perfect view of the pitch.

Looking at the ships in the humber would be a bonus.

Sorry, FAC first round replay was our 3-2 win at Chesterfield in 1979.  (Not the 2nd round as I said).

It was a mistake to build a stand twice the height of the rest of the ground.  There are now many generations of Town fans who think the matchday experience should involve gazing at the estuary for ninety minutes.

I suspect Tom Shutes was brought up watching matches from the Upper, as he was planning to make the same mistake with his docks stadium.  For maximum reverberation and atmosphere, all four stands should be the same height.

You must realise the club can't compete in the Championship and aim for the Premier League if it stays at Blundell Park.

Although I tend to agree with a fair amount of this, I do believe that the prerequisite of any ground is soul. Facilities of course within the ground have to be a sufficient standard (toilets, food, shops etc)  as football choice has changed over the years.

What I do like the idea of is when all stands are joined, THIS creates the reverberation and atmosphere although it also helps of course if the home team are winning!

The problem is, for years everything about the club has been neglected (both on and off the pitch) and we’re now playing catch up in every dept. Of course everyone would like a brand new stadium or brand new stands but this isn’t going to happen overnight but am sure that it is being looked at in detail when or should the day should arise. Let’s face it, it’s better than a pie in the sky white elephant.

There is of course the argument that building a new stadium will bring fans in ten fold or the counter argument that it could take any funds away from the playing side. What I do have though is faith in 1878 not to derail the club by spaffing £££££ needlessly and without consideration

Let's imagine for one crazy moment the club was able to demolish some houses and the council gave permission for redevelopment.  Would you be happy with a Keepmoat on the site of Blundell Park?

I think the original words words were Play up Pompey, Pompey play up so we changed it a little bit. But yes we did steal it as did a lot of club’s fans.

I was at that match shown against Millwall standing in the pontoon in my Parker coat.
Notice how Mick Brolly scampered down the wing. He had a habit of just standing still on the edge of the pitch as I’m sure he knew he blended into the crowd with all the black and white so the opposition lost sight of him in their peripheral vision.
Joe Waters knew where Mick was all the time and often looked like he’d kicked the ball away until Mick started moving.
Really simple tactic but it worked.
That was the team who could beat anyone on their day.

The Everton win was sublime. I couldn’t get in the Pontoon that game so ended up in the Osmond open corner packed in like a sardine and often being lifted off my feet. . Turned out perfectly though as I got a great view of the goals.
Losing the open corners makes the ground look a bit disjointed that’s true but on a wet windy day it was an area you definitely didn’t want to be in.

How about a 20k stadium like Swansea?  They have an 8-row lower tier, mid-level wheelchair spaces and a 16-row upper tier.  That's similar to the Findus Stand.

It's not the stadium that makes the atmosphere, it's the fans inside.  BP has three wide open corners but can be rocking when we play well. It can also be dead when we don't!

Population of the Swansea Bay area is a lot higher than N.E. Lincs. They might be able to use 20,000 seats relatively often, but it would be pretty rare for us.

I've actually been to the Liberty Stadium, though not to see a game, and their conference facilities were something we will be aiming to copy if we ever build a new stadium or redevelop BP.

It was a mistake to build a stand twice the height of the rest of the ground.  There are now many generations of Town fans who think the matchday experience should involve gazing at the estuary for ninety minutes.

I suspect Tom Shutes was brought up watching matches from the Upper, as he was planning to make the same mistake with his docks stadium.  For maximum reverberation and atmosphere, all four stands should be the same height.

You must realise the club can't compete in the Championship and aim for the Premier League if it stays at Blundell Park.
