Absolutely priceless in this division. Lincoln had it & harnessed it, look where it put them. I don’t want to be sat here in 3,4,5 years time having played Wealdstone again in non-league wondering what might’ve been if someone had bothered their árse to replace the star striker when we were getting gates of 7000 and selling out at home.

Absolutely fúcked the chance to push on against some absolute dross, and now the players will have to lift their game to beat almost all the top 6/7 in the next few months. They’re capable of it, but they’ve just made their job immeasurably harder.

Agree. Selections and tactics short today, but something has happened with performance levels and it’s inexplicable.

I don't think that's the case. Its more likely that a group of relatively young inexperienced lads in a newly assembled team found they could suddenly do nothing wrong and then the bubble got a puncture due to injuries, Covid and red cards and as a group they found they couldn't handle it.

It is firmly in Hurst's court to turn it around now. Anyone can manage a team that is winning every week and things are going smoothly How Hurst manages this problem will decide the season, time for him to show what he can do. He can start by going back to selecting the strongest team (without McAtee sadly) in which the group had confidence based on those early results and stop flipping about with unnecessary changes (which he clearly did in twp positions today.)

Time for Pearson to have a chat with the more inexperienced lads perhaps (Hurst and Doig may not be the best placed to do it)

You're not wrong there swin, Hurst has tried to be too clever, thinking he could tinker  when it wasn't needed, to coin a phrase "shot himself cleanly in the foot"..

For me Friday is a massive game psychologically.
Win and we stop this route with our best player(s) potentially becoming available for some massive games to increase that positiveness.
Lose and its 6(?) on the bounce and we'll likely be further away from the top 3.

With this new play off format we must aim for a top 3 finish to get an advantage. UTM

Think it's more a case of our first XI is a top three team
Our squad as a whole is barely top 8

For whatever reason it looks like the slightest setback has infected morale/confidence; we were flying and it is utterly baffling to me how it can go so wrong so quickly

Certainly without McAtee (as a fan) I think that has reduced our creativity/firepower by at least 60-70%

We look clueless in the final third most of the time; shot shy; little quality into the box

Baffling and frustrating that we losing to poor teams - and worrying

I really hope the fans stay behind the team and manager when things get even tougher in the forthcoming sequence of games.
The only thing I can’t tolerate personally is a lack of effort and commitment and that is clearly not the case with this fantastic squad of dedicated professionals. Sure some young individuals are making mistakes and it’s clear that confidence has gone from high to low but I think it’s time to show faith and vocal encouragement rather than condemnation.

I think Hurst got yesterday wrong and he knows it, and the players he did have faith in let him down. I think that criticism needs to be constructive and we need to guard against hostility or abuse creeping in. Stick together, and crack on. Overall we are very well placed and our support will help to sustain that if we stay really positive.

This … and the first big test of our new owners I thought we needed  a couple of good additions but looking more like 3/4. I know hindsight is wonderful but if we’d signed tshmango (spelling) we’d have been ten points clear now

Yep. I have said it before and I will say it again. If we are not prepared to compete by spending money on the in-demand players we won't win the league. It does not matter how many improvements are made in other areas, if the owners are not prepared to pay fees and the wages to match then their good work will be in vain.

I would include Hurst in this as well; I think I recall when he was talking about Tshimanga more or less saying he was out of our reach. He has got to be more ambitious than that. We have very wealthy owners so this is unacceptable.

Hurst and the board have done brilliantly so far, but do we want to challenge for the title or not? I guess we will soon find out.

If Tshimanga stays fit I can see him firing Chesterfield to the title
Not sure if we could have afforded him or whether Hurst/board thought it was too much to pay?

I think Hurst implied the latter in an interview earlier in season

It’s not really hindsight when you wanted him back in the Summer.

Can’t really say we’d be 10 points clear though. We’d have had a different team and tactics. Better off, but not 10 points.

Momentum is important but every teams will have their good and bad spells. We were 3-1 to Barnet before a dodgy red card and last minute winner sparked an incredible run. Just need a bit of luck or a bit of class and things can change quickly in this league.

Makes me laugh when people say there are no strikers out there available, well get the check book out and all of sudden they will become available. We are still seen as a big ambitious club at this level players will want to come, offer Bromley 50k and a kit of fish for Michael Cheek and they will be removing his name from his locker before the check clears. He may not want to leave but doubles his wages and he’s packing his bags. We have to be more ambitious if we want to compete at the top and get back to where we belong.

There's no doubt we are short of fire power up front & Tshimnaga would have been a real bonus.
However the fees/add on received for Pollock Grist & the lad who went to Peterborough - seemingly generating in excess of £500k - will have gone to JSF.
No one could have predicted gates in excess of 6k which have developed once the likes of Tshimnaga  had signed elsewhere.
We are still paying for the inept/questionable arrivals/motivation of the fruitcake.
Morais is sitting on his laurels taking the wage & we are probably paying a good part of Rose's wages.
Gibson & Jackson won't have moved on without compensation.
Scannell hasn't been seen this season along with Grant & Wright.
We still have have to pay JSF some £1m. & so the drain on our income continues - for a while.

I doubt JSF envisaged any sane/honourable individuals would take on the shambles he had created.
They have & the future is bright  - 4 defeats on the bounce is hugely disappointing but let's keep the  faith  & be patient.
We are only 3 points off top spot. UTM.

Great post

We as fans have every reason to be optimistic given the new owners and for the first time in a long while a team/squad that is competitive. Blind optimism is obviously misplaced and when things get sticky we as fans have every right to ask questions and expect more. But if we believe our club is moving in the right direction, it remains our role in that, as fans, to get behind the team and show our support.

So long as we continue to believe the club is in good hands and moving forwards, we have to expect and accept that there will be ups and downs but continue to support the team and keep the faith. UTM

How many would expect their bad spell to come, having been top of the league, against Wealdstone, Aldershot & Notts County and also get turfed out the FA Cup by a team a division below?

Not many but that’s football. Man Utd and Sunderland fans were  full of hope not long ago and now can’t buy a win. It’s sh1t but it happens. 3 of the 4 defeats have been away and we were unlucky to lose to Notts County. Friday could be the turning point or things might go against us. Either way I won’t be losing the ability to reflect rationally on how far we’ve come as a club in the last 6 months.
