If we were playing them tomorrow I would never have been more confident of asking 'how many will we win by?...'

The less mature amongst you may be mildly amused to learn that Bromsgrove Sporting play in the village of Lickey End.

Not me though, I’m way too sophisticated for that.

Good point. A lot to be said for a winning mentality, whatever league you're in. I appreciate we have a winning mentality too, but there's is worth respect.

This. Yes we should win it on paper, but let's not get cocky. Its both an ugly trait and can come back to bite you.

Bit of a nothing tie for me, would like us to keep our composure and move onto next round

Bromsgrove had 775 fans for their FAC game last Sat.  Against Welwyn Garden City (they won 1-0).

Looks like plenty of room if their capacity is 3,500.

(The game last Sat was stopped for 23 mins after 2 serious injuries to players following a 50/50 clash).

think you're looking at the wrong town! there's loads of boozers in the high Street and on Birmingham Road

If the players go into this with the same assumption of an easy victory as some of the posters on here, and especially if we field a weakened side, we could come a cropper here. I don't think it will happen because Paul Hurst is far too professional to let it, but don't assume records will be broken. They are only two leagues lower and having a good season so far. I would be very happy with any kind of reasonably comfortable win, which to be fair, is what should happen if we approach this correctly.

Only scored 8 in 8 league games this season.  Won 1-0 last Sat. Don't score many but that means nothing in the cup. Conceded 12 in 8 in the league . Probably play out of their skins against us  but if we go in the right frame of mind we should get through

The standard of football isn’t great at that level (as you’d probably expect). I do freelance reporting occasionally for some West Midlands based teams in that division including Redditch (who lost something like 20 games in a row before the season was curtailed!) and Stourbridge, and there’s a vast difference between it and the national league (again no surprise!).

As others have said though, anything can happen in a game of football so we need to go in with the right mentality.

Hurst will be looking for a good FA Cup run.

Unlike the Trophy games , it will pay to play a strong team to win.

Subs can always get minutes if any cup game proves easier than thought.

Give every opponent respect but play to win.

Rovers in those days, weren’t they? I was more of a Stafford Rangers man myself, as their name just sounded a bit more exciting than Runcorn or Slough Town.

TV game??

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

There seems to be conflicting info on different sites regarding ground capacity. Some sites seem to indicate that the capacity has now been increased to 4893.

I doubt it very much. The Clee game was to get to Wembley. This game is “just” to get into the FA Cup 1st Round Proper.

Not felt this confident about a trip to the Midlands since I set off to Chasetown .....

😭

Due respect people , due respect. Lower ranked teams beat higher ranked teams in every round of the cup so let's not get all Billy Big B0ll0cks on this one.

Potentially a new ground to chalk off is all my expectations at this point.

They describe the draw as "eye-watering" ! As the ground capacity was extended in 2017 to just under 4900 potentially their record crowd (against Cleethorpes) could be in danger of being broken. Wonder how many tickets they will give us?

Bayleys in bromsgrove is a lovely place, a sort of version of miab. It’s run by 2 brothers that are a great laugh tbh. The ground is probably about a 20 minute walk from there. It’s not that big inside, but if you like your craft beer then it’s the place to be for sure

Think FA rules say we can claim up to 15% = 735

Redditch & Bromsgrove Campaign for Real Ale
Not far from the grounds is the Hop Pole which is just getting back up to speed, Little Ale House on the other side of the town centre is the local micropub. The Red Lion is a Marstons pub but there's always a good friendly local atmosphere there. Golden Cross is the local JDW and usually has interesting guests. If you're coming by train the Ladybird keeps good beer and gives discounts to card-carrying CAMRA members. If you have time it's worth making the pilgrimage to Cross at Finstall; about a mile from the train station; alternatively buses 52/52A run every half hour from Bromsgrove bus station via the train station then to the Cross. Enjoy!

what a shame it's a 12.30 k.o. , but hopefully will get a chance to try 1 or 2 afterwards

I imagine, even with some rotation, we should have enough to get through. I suspect people like Lenny, Pearson, Revan and Wright will get a runout next week, maybe Efete will get a game and Coke might play. We have plenty of depth now fortunately at least. We’ll take it seriously and win if we do so. We should be too quick and fit for them.

Some changes maybe but not too many, we don't want to take any chances - this is the FA Cup and shocks happen all the time. The potential money and interest that can be generated in the 3rd round is too huge to take many risks.

Yesterday's bench plus Longe-King, Efete and Crocombe to start you'd think. 8 changes, should still have enough to do the job.

Got an awful feeling about this one.

Without a league game until Yeovil a week on Sat, I’m hoping Hurst doesn’t feel the need to shuffle too much, you’d ideally want the first 11 to keep sharp and keep the decent run going.

My instincts are he'll give those on the edge of the first 11 a start. Coke, Lenny, Pearson are certain to start (I know nothing of course!)
Possibly Longe-King, Revan and Crocombe. I suspect we may not be able to play Hunt either

That's a shame. Not many others took the eye. Miro Pais is only 19 and a real athlete with a good touch. Won't be at Bromsgrove very long.

I understand the reasoning for people wanting to play our full strength team but this is something we should not be doing IMO

What if we field a full strength team and key player gets a serious injury? Yes I appreciate this could happen in a league game but why take this risk in a game against a team 2 leagues below us?

Also it provides valuable game time to players who haven't had much or any so far this season, Crocombe, Pearson, Longe King, Revan, Coke, Wright, John Lewis, maybe even Kohouri and also Efete potentially seeing as so he has missed the last 3 games due to suspension, if Grant/Scannell were fit then we could have seen them playing also.

I don't think for one second that Bromsgrove Sporting will just roll over and die making it easy for us but those aforementioned players should have enough about them to see them off.

Might have had a red though! The Lowestoft game ended in a fracas with Bromsgrove's defender being sent off and a Lowestoft coach shown a yellow. If Pais plays and Demetri Brown too we'll have to be solid at full back. Looks like their keeper has a mistake in him though.

Think we need to take heed of some of the successful managers of club and country as well as some high profile ex-players. You field your strongest team at the start of the game.

I think them times have changed, with fixtures coming thick and fast, stronger squads are far more important then stronger first elevens.

Players like LJL, Pearson, Revan and Coke need game time because at some point in the season we will need them. Let's be honest, if them players aren't good enough to start against a team who are part time and mid table two leagues below ours then there not good enough to play at our level.

Unable to attend games at the moment, got my operation on the 2nd Nov, cannot risk getting Covid, so frustrating, but happy with the start we have made. I was just wondering if anyone could get me a programme from the game, if issued, if possible drop off to my brother at Comley Camera's. I will give him the money for the cost of programme.
Thanks.

Hurst has got a tough choice but I think he’ll probably go straight down the middle and just make a few changes. I imagine Revan is a shoe-in given Crookes has played every game and he’s only played one. Efete as well given he’s not played in 3 games.

Only other guarantee starts for me are Crocombe and Coke who will both need game time.

Aside from that I’m not sure Hurst will ring the changes, get the game wrapped up at half time and then make the changes needed.

Maybe rest McAtee, Sousa, and Taylor. Best not to risk injury and they are key.

I would put in players who could do with some game time, Coke, LJL, Efete, Revan, and Pearson.  Maybe Bapaga.

Could bring in some of the big guns if needed late on.

Surely LJL starts.  Hurst has said he's looking a bit rusty and in need of some game time.  Plus Taylor would benefit from a little rest, having had no pre-season to then starting all (think it's most actually) games.

Wouldn't surprise me at all see wholesale changes.  Crocombe, Efete, Pearson, Revan, Coke, Wright, Bagapa, LJL...

I know Hurst likes a cup run and always previously went strong on his selections.  But we've never been in this position where we've sat looking down on everyone this early or genuinely had so many good players chomping at the bit.  The effectiveness of those chomping at the bit will decrease if they're not given the opportunity to impress.

Has this been asked?

FA Cup - is it any 3 from 7 subs, not 5 subs,  named in this competition?

If so, choices available if things don't go to plan for any changes in team selection.

Has this been asked?

FA Cup - is it any 3 from 7 subs, not 5 subs,  named in this competition?

If so, choices available if things don't go to plan for any changes in team selection.

This is not beyond the bounds of possibility - it makes you realise what a strong squad PH & Deputy Dawg have put together.

It's certainly the most capable looking squad we've had for some time, with no obvious weak spots, however they're only a couple of divisions below us, it will be both their biggest game and biggest crowd in many years and ultimately I expect Hurst to show them more respect than to put a completely new side out.

I would expect those players who have been consistently on the bench in recent weeks, plus the returning Efete to come in. That would mean starts for Efete, Pearson, Coke, LJL and Wright, with Sears, Waterfall, any of the three midfielders, Taylor and Sousa sitting out.

The biggest headscratcher of this squad for me is what you do if McAtee doesn't start; we've tried it once and it didn't really work. The likes of Taylor and LJL, and then Sousa, Bapaga and Wright are relatively interchangeable, but there's no like-for-like replacement for McAtee as he's such a wildcard. That's more a strength of the squad than a weakness as we're lucky to have him in the first place, but it's something we need to find an answer to nonetheless.

I mentally chose the same starters as you, but I wanted to give McAtee (& Taylor and Waterfall) a bench seat from which they would hopefully not be needed.
Also assumed the loanees will be unavailable.

So I had the same dilemma, and could see Ben Fox filling in. Aggressive, covers the pitch well, can spot a pass, fancies a shot...so there are some similarities imo.

I'm happy with whatever PH goes with, though. He's earned that respect for me.

I want to see a fairly strong side and leave big changes for the FA Trophy. It's a chance to progress in the competition and draw bigger sides down the line, with the revenue that brings. We haven't got any midweek games, so I can't see the point of wholesale changes.

Given the buzz around BP, and the ability of the players who aren't in the first XI, there must be players thirsting for a game.

PH has to manage this...and I trust him to do so.

I'd like us to just change a handful at most, those who usually come on as a sub and are close to the starting XI.. Most people are saying the same here. Coke, ljl to name 2 I'd be shocked if that don't start... Not in a bad way, I'd be happy for him to keep the usual XI.

Sales have been 'steady' I'm told. Suspect it won't be an away sell out

PS apparently we get £2000 from the BBC for showing it ,plus 45% of the take , which I'm guessing will be between £15-£18,000 - plus £3k if you lose (£9K for the winners), so at worst we get in another £20,000

Agreed, we should pick a fairly strong team.

Some selections will depend on loanee eligibility, I believe PH has only publicly confirmed that Revan can play so far.  With that in mind - and considering Towler and Hunt may have been rested anyway - Pearson and Coke are good bets for a start.  Or is Longe-King match fit yet?  Crocombe could play, although I seem to remember Hurst being very reluctant to change keepers for any other reason than an injury in his last stint, so that will be interesting.  Efete will be favourite to return but I'd actually like Sears to keep his place to prove to the players that they need to fight to get back in.

We actually don't have a load of backup options in midfield - we tend to start 3 out of the 4 senior options anyway - so I'd expect Clifton and Fox to play.  Perhaps with Fox being more advanced if we rest McAtee?

Taylor's fitness needs to be managed so LJL will almost certainly start.  If Revan isn't trusted this weekend then I can't see him featuring much for a while, so hopefully he plays and does well.  Other side: either Sousa or Bapaga.  Doesn't really matter which, both are cracking options and in good form.

No chance. After plenty of away games and some long trips in there recently I’d imagine plenty are taking a week off, especially given it’s not the easiest to get to on the train.

Yeah absolutely the point about mcatee. I wouldn't like to be without him for league games. He binds the attacks together and your right nobody could quite play that role, except maybe Grant or scannel who we won't be seeing anytime soon presumably. It would be ideal to not risk him, but as you mentioned the 4 3 2 1 we tried earlier in the season with the 2 being sousa and bapaga wide didn't really work.

We could try essel replacing him against bromsgrove and become a more orthodox 4 4 2, instead of 4 4 1 1. Hurst mentioned thinking of bringing him on against Barnet so he is within thoughts and bromsgrove are a couple of leagues below.

Definitely not an easy decision about how much to change it, can see both sides.

Minor point, but is it not a bit stingy for us to take 45% of the ticket money, especially given how far ahead of budget we must already be this season.

I’m sure it’s our entitlement, but there must be a mechanic for bigger clubs to opt out of that arrangement in situations where it’s likely to make a significant difference to the hosts. I’m sure we’d appreciate a similar gesture were we to face a club from the upper echelons later in the tournament.

Absolutely agree with you.

He plays a strong team and wins! Could have given others the chance would be the cry.
Plays a strong team, wins, and one player has a big injury! He should defo played a weaker team.
Plays a weak team and lose's! What a plonker.
Plays a mixed team, lose's and a 1st teamer injured. A bigger plonker.

All the above and Hurst is hopeless, couldn't pick a team to top the league (LOL)

Picks a weakened team and wins. What a manager, a man of vision and understanding.

Like you KM I'm very pleased it's not my decision.

In some respects, it’s a no win situation for PH.

Whatever he does, folk will expect us to win, ignoring the fact Bromsgrove are gonna try and do what we’ve done to Spurs, Liverpool, Everton etc…

No.
We're hardly Chelsea or man City, we still have a 1.5 mill debt to fenty who has first dibs on our transfer fees. No idea of bromsgrove finances but quite possibly they are in a healthier situation than us.
When clubs have foregone money like this to my memory its usually a prem club against non league (whereas we are only 2 levels above bromsgrove) or the receiving club is in dire financial circumstances, again not the case to my knowledge.

Losing a first teamer to a serious injury would be worse than losing IMO, we're not going to win the FA Cup but we are, given current form and if no key players get a long term problem, going to win the NL

I’ve managed to get tickets for the game and I couldn’t be more excited. For a variety of reasons, I’ve haven’t been able to see us yet this season. I actually don’t mind what side we put out although I reckon McAtee and Taylor could probably do with a rest. I just hope we can avoid any injuries and put in a performance.

Will Hunt and Towler be allowed to play? They would be cup tied for their parent clubs, or any club they joined on loan after January if we cant extend their loans.

So I imagine their parent clubs would not want to see them play in this game.

Being on telly plus it being the third away game on the spin will keep it to 400 or so I reckon. Which for any other club at this level and a couple higher up would be more than decent. It is only the last round of qualifying in fairness.

With tv exposure both nationally and locally to those who have heard we are good but have still not ventured to BP I hope we play a side that is both good enough to win and show what we are about. Some areas of the pitch we can get away with changes some we can’t. For me Mcatee and Taylor should play. We have had no midweek game this week and none next . Yes there is a risk of injury but life is a risk.

That's a very good point about the 'free advertising'.

I just feel that with the start we've made, and the difference promotion will make to the club, I would accept PH 'concentrating on the league'.

Yes, a cup run would make us money...but with the home crowds we're getting, our league form is also making us money.

As many have already said, I'm happy to leave this to PH.

It’s the FA cup so i suspect a slightly altered side but still played out there that sadly for Bromsgrove, can probably put them to the sword like we’ve done in the league…

There’s cash to be made (for Fenty) but a good cup run can have w huge positive impact on the players, club and wider community…

I know about the transfer cash going to JF, but didn't know about cup money going in the same direction. Have I missed something or is it speculation?

No, people are still getting their head round paying Fenty back his loans, which, whilst absolutely obscene, is something we all knew was part of the deal.

Not sure why we need to keep dragging it up, the quicker we pay him the better IMO. If we make a few million quid from a cup run, decide to pay up early and that leaves him gone a couple of years early that’s fine by me

I'm not irked that we've paid Fenty some of his loans ahead of schedule but it's the fact that we MUST do it that gets me.

If 1878 came out and said that they were choosing to pay him off with the most or all of the money received, I think it would have gone down well.

The sooner he's paid off, the sooner he can't come on here telling us all he's still funding the club.

Morning all.

Wishing you a safe journey down tomorrow. A quick question for you:

There’s currently uproar in Bromsgrove as it’s being suggested that we will not be able to have a beer pitchside as we normally can. Now I know this is the case for league clubs, but it isnt normally an issue at our level.

It’s been suggested that it might be down to you being in the national league?

Anyone any knowledge? Are you ordinarily allowed to have a beer in view of the game at your home matches?

Cheers.

I went to a Cleethorpes Town game in the early qualifying rounds and was told it was FA rules that it's no pitchside drinking for FA Cups

It's also not allowed in the National League

Lincoln managed both. Went on a great cup run, which if anything, made them better in the league. They got stronger as the season progressed and developed a winning mentality.

Regards coverage tomorrow, which I know is via the magic BBC red button, does anyone know if it can also be watched online? I am assuming so, but wanted to be certain as I may not be near a telly come lunchtime tomorrow.

If either ourselves or Dagenham & Redbridge progress to the 2nd round, we won’t have a Saturday away fixture between 13th November (Aldershot) and 5th February (Notts County).

Thanks for the responses all. I’ve read up on the legislation and whereas you’re not allowed (being in the conference) we are.

And FA cup preliminary or qualifying rounds are exempt from the pitch side alcohol legislation so all being well, you should be able to enjoy a beer.

Slotted in very well with great decision making. He's mainly been partnered with Luke Waterfall who is an old fashioned, no nonsense centre half.

Our other 2 centre halves haven't played much since he came in so don't get too hopeful of seeing him in action tomorrow.

12:20 according to this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/schedules/p069dk6p/2021/10/16

If anyone can't see it at that time then the full game is repeated at 18:50 if you can avoid finding out the score by then!

It is said that some people's garbage is other people's treasure. The BBC is not garbage as should be flushed away with other effluents. Why? One example we all know about Woking 0 Grimsby 1 scorer Hunt.

i am immensely impressed - ever since the first 10 minutes at Torquay - cool, unflustered, refuses to be bullied, has a good touch and has that inherent quality of always looking like he's got time

the only weakness i've seen is a lack of threat in the opposing penalty box

i'm trying to think of players with equivalent qualities and the only ones i can come up with are peter handyside (s!) and paul futcher. And tbh I think he could be as good as those 2.

I am a big Towler fan, but I'd not compare him to Futcher at all. More of mix between Handyside and Lever from that era, in terms of being tall, a solid man marker, and a decent passer too.

Towler appears to be our current tallest player; 6 3? 6 ft 4, maybe even taller?  But the info on this is lacking online. Maybe i just don't know where to look.

I'd say he is more like a Ryan Bennett or even a Josh Gowling  than a Paul Futcher.  (Side note I looked up Bennett on wiki for his height, and wiki seems to think Ryan had 70 plus goals for GTFC in a 100 games, WTF?!?!)

I'd say he is more like a Ryan Bennett or even a Josh Gowling  than a Paul Futcher.  (Side note I looked up Bennett on wiki for his height, and wiki seems to think Ryan had 70 plus goals for GTFC in a 100 games, WTF?!?!)

Not as impressive as the 23 in 5 he apparently got at Leicester last season. You’d have thought they’d have given him a few more games.

Good shout re Gowling & Bennett. It's just the time he seems to have , and his coolness that reminds me of the great man

Not sure that I would put him in the same class as Lord Futch though!

Agree.
Very unfair to compare a young lad starting out in his professional career and a very experienced player in the twilight of his.

If we win tomorrow it sets up a potential dilemma for parents between the romance of The F.A. Cup and Guy Fawkes Night.

Wifey has already invited all kids and grandkids round for a Fireworks party on the Sat. 6th Nov.  After 43 years of nearly getting my hands blown off I had hoped to be free of this cultural insanity. After politely suggesting that we wait for tomorrow's result and the First Round draw on Sunday before confirming, I realised that it's nearly impossible to fix a time over that weekend which suits everyone.

As the details below describe, matches can take place between Friday 5th and Monday 8th Nov. Factor in TV coverage and Police advice and the answer is obvious.  Cancel Fireworks.

All I care about is beating Bromsgrove and drawing Scunny at home in the first round. It's FATE I tells ya!

........and beating them before repeating v the Imps in round 2, then drawing MUFC away in the 3rd round ..... that would do nicely.

Do you really think Maidenhead United will get that far?

Got to disagree. Bommy Night is paramount. It’s OUR national Autumn festival, unlike that American cultural imperialist, commercial cringe-fest.

The solution is (If we beat Bromsgrove) invite everyone for ‘Bommy Night’, then if we play on 5th Nov and if your family arrive that night point out that everyone these days celebrates it on the nearest Saturday. If we play on 6th and they turn up, point out Bommy Night is Nov 5th and they’ve come a day late.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Don't get me started on Hxxxxxxxn!  I like a good 'bommy' too, just hate the military grade pyros. Plus, I insist being the one in charge of the SwanVestas in my garden and airspace. They  couldn't possibly have a good time without me, could they?

Not sure if it'll impact anyone else, but I've just got an email from trainline telling me the 10:24 from Worcester Foregate to Bromsgrove has been cancelled. Will probably impact those coming from the south west / Reading.

Many fans may not realise that when Man City bought Paul Futcher it was the British record for the most expensive defender.  £350,000 back in the 1970s.

Worst I’ve felt about a match all season, absolutely no win scenario.

Would love an early goal just to knock the stuffing out of them.
