Really excited to see him return to full fitness, i think IF he can keep fit he can play a vital part for us this season. On paper there is no way on earth he should be playing at this level.
I'm basing this on nothing but a gut feeling but i hope and believe he can stay fit and play a integral role in our promotion challenge.

Im wondering how others view him, do you see him as one of holloways mercenaries? Or do you fancy him to come into the team and work hard?

Yep, he didn't contribute much at all last season.

Paul Hurst rates him clearly, if he didnt he would have been off as surely must be a top earner.
Get hhim and keep him fit and he should run games in this league week in week out.

Im excited to see him get a good run and hopefully stay injury clear for a while.

Danny Rose is a mercenary, sat there on social media ranting about weather changing technology as we lost our Football League status.

Scannell has been kept on but the difficulty is going to be keeping him fit. He's obviously a decent character because Hurst would have binned him off otherwise. Having played at a decent level, he could be good for the likes of Bapaga, Sousa and Wright.

Marcus Marshall is the forgotten man of 2016 but he played a huge role in us getting to Wembley. I wonder if Scannell will be similar.

Here's a breakdown of his minutes played over the last 5 seasons:

2020/21: 707 minutes
2019/20: 930 minutes
2018/19: 1438 minutes
2017/18: 1126 minutes
2016/17: 749 minutes

An average of 990 minutes per season, and that's in all competitions. So excluding injury time, that's 11 matches on average per season over the last 5 seasons. Looking just at his league matches, he's averaged 9 full matches worth of game time each season over the last 5 years.

I hope all you lot clinging onto the fact that he was decent for Huddersfield in 2015/16 have got this one right, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think a season or 2 struggling with limited games is a concern and sometimes worth a calculated risk but 4 seasons (when he signed) is a huge red flag.

The red flag for me, I've said before, was when I.H. signed him he said something like, with a change of a manager, Scannell was suddenly out the team so didn't know what to do.

And then the same thing happened here.

So the onus is on the player to prove himself surely.

I've not given up on him, but again, not holding my breath either.  On the one hand, he could appear from the bench almost at any time from now, especially with spokes etc  loaned out, max and grant injured. On the other, will we ever see him play!?!?

Wonder if we'll see him before Max Wright makes another cameo this season. Also wonder how many Scannell threads we'll see before Max Wright makes another cameo this season.

Scannell is employed by the club to play football. So far he has played very little and his track record of freedom from injury suggests he will not play a large part in our promotion.

I have no criticism of his ability but it has been in short supply for several years. Keeping him fit and available for selection will be a problem. To me I think it's best we let him go, reduce the wage bill and look for a fit replacement if needed. At present Scannell's presence has not been missed, so will it be needed in the future?

You can't just let someone go to reduce the wage bill when he is contracted.

You canonly be loaned out if your fit to play. You can only come to an agreement on a termination were you pay a player a % of his wages allowing him to sign  for another club to make up/more than  make up the difference if they are fit to play.

Not many games a season.......can that be just being  injured all the time or could it also be attitude or application?

Hollowhead seemed to call that to question when he was here, we may not in hindsight want to trust that opinion but that 4/5 season average shows he regularly hasnt been a core member of the squad.

Dont see him suddenly breaking that habit in the next couple of weeks.

The fact Hurst has kept him means that fraud of a football manager was wrong in his assessment of his attitude; in my opinion.

Pure speculation on my part but I wonder if the problem was more down to Scannell’s assessment of Holloway?

Has picked up another injury (knee) in training according to Hurst.

A real shame, I was looking forward to seeing him play alongside McAtee, Sousa, etc

I feel sorry for him, his body has obviously given up on him. We often have a pop at injury prone players but I’m sure this isn’t what they want either and no doubt it’s a depressing state of affairs for all involved.

Hope it’s not too serious for him

It's a shame there is a player there in Scannell who could make the difference I thought he was excellent a couple of seasons ago against us for Bradford and thought why can't we get a player like that.

He played 18 games for Burton in the championship not so long ago and spells in in League 1 so that's why I think Hurst is keeping around plus must be showing positive signs or Hurst would released him.

No point paying him off when we’ll pay exactly the same amount of money keeping him, with there being the potential to get some games, where he could play well. No one here doubts his ability, and whilst it’s frustrating seeing him injured, no one in the world will be more frustrated than him. Even if later on in the season we get a few games out of him when needed, he could contribute to winning games. Even if it’s only one, it makes more sense than just completely getting rid

Bit of a painful one for me this to say but his times up now.
Really feel for the guy but something is really not right with him physically, just gets back to training and breaks down every time.
Maybe it's time for him to call it a day and accept the inevitable that his footballing days are over and time for his boots to be hung up
I understand that will be the toughest decision and one he doesn't want to make but I'm sure Callum Dyson at only 24 didn't want to do it either but he knew his body just couldn't take the rigours of professional football.

How?

I think we will be lucky to see half a dozen appearances from him this season. If you offered me that now I'd take it. Absolutely no faith in him being fit at all I am afraid. Hopefully any few and far appearances from him can be helpful

Sorry but he has been a waste of space along with some of the rest of the crap we signed last season that took us down.

im sure he has the technical ability and i dont mean to be harsh, but when you are gunning for promotion you dont really want to be paying for someone who is constantly injured, taking up a slot in the squad for someone else.  Max for me is slightly different in that he is still young and maybe his body is adjusting to the demand, but he really does need some luck and be available for selection more than not.  SS has only made a small number of appearances which for a senior player isn't great.  I do however wish is was fit to play but i'm sure there are other players.

Some of the comments on here make me ashamed to be a Town fan. Hope he gets fit soon. Injuries can be soul destroying for pro-footballers. It's at those low times when they're grafting to get back, mainly on their own, that they need the full support of the fanbase, rather than some calling for them to be out of work..

Having seen Sean play in the Prem, I’m afraid your comparison with Max is off the charts. A fit (ish) Scannell would rip this league up.

I'm sorry to argue the point and whilst I agree about hoping he gets fit he's been here and spent more time under Dave Moore than his has the managers
Nobody really wants to see anybody out if work but in reality if you, I or any employee was on the sick the same amount as Scannell has been out injured questions would be asked and I have no doubt most employers would be looking to get rid.of said employee
We can be all romantic and wax lyrically about his ability because there's no doubting that, but it's complete waste than that ability is being realised.

It is said by many that football is a results business. Sean has talent which he has proved in the past, but for whatever reason his body is letting him down. Sad to say he can no longer play on a permanent or semi-permanent basis. Whether he can add to the training or not I don't know but I feel it's time to part company.

Sadly another case of early retirement is needed. At some stage or other you have to accept a situation.

You'd better give Hurst a call and tell him that he's wasting his time and budget with Scannell then. You're obviously more in the know when it comes to it than the GTFC manager is..

You've got a lack of empathy because you've had no first hand experience..

I'm sure he could, i've seen him play several times albeit highlights etc, for me i dont see the desire in him even in the youtube videos he aint exactly busting a gut, but then again maybe he doesn't want to.  I'm certainly not calling him a Martin Butler, but then there is no point having an A card if you cant play it.  How many games has he played again?

He was signed by IH on a 3 year deal, making it difficult to release from his contract without paying a large settlement.  So PH probably decided to work with him (and why not he has the ability after all), but like others have said, no question about his ability.  You only have to look at the number of times he was available for selection to understand the situation you dont need PH for that.

Wow. Bigdog really does have a big bee in his bonnet tonight. Unless he IS Sean Scannell then I'm guessing everyone is wrong with their comments......

.......apart from him.

Please give him the respect he thinks he deserves.

I was thinking of doing a showreel for him from last season.....

......but it wouldn't last more than 30 seconds and 25 seconds of that would be him running out onto the pitch before he got injured again......and again etc

Time for him to do a male private Whittington. Sling a stick over your shoulder with your boots hanging off it and walk off into semi-professional or amateur football where they can train less.

What a crock of crud BD!..I've had more experience than I care to discuss with you, including my fiancee who was retired due to I'll health... basically wasn't fit enough to do her job efficiently and reliably...
I've all the empathy in the world but a line in the sand has to drawn somewhere, my god I feel for Scannell, he's obviously got a cracking attitude and wants to get fit but you cannot hide from true, hard facts.

It's so frustrating and it must be even more so for Scannell who has barely kicked a ball for the last 5 seasons.

You certainly have to question what due diligence we did when we signed him.

Hurst has decided to keep him around the main squad and with his experience, he's probably great for our wide players to learn off but you really can't see him playing 10 games for us this season.

I feel that we have a player with time left on a legally binding contract.

If Sean has been for independent medical tests and treatments, then there must be an unbiased medical report, and recommendations in place to get him back to fitness.

If Town are keeping to that programme and Sean is doing what is prescribed, then we have no choice but to try to get him fit to play.

However, at some point, there needs to be a point where medical retirement becomes the only option and insurance payouts are made to the player and his professional status ends.

Question - does the payout made to the player close off the remaining money of the contract signed ?

I don't know, so am asking?

Is that a final solution?

Having now watched the PH interview, it seems Scannell has hyper extended his knee, which is unlucky for the player. That can happen by simply landing awkwardly and is maybe not just a case of him breaking down again.

Seems to be sufficient to put him on the scrap heap (according to some).

Personally, I would.

I understand Hurst may see something, and perhaps, just perhaps he may get a chance but in reality I couldn’t see him getting on the bench at present and this just seems like set back after setback.

I know last year is hard to judge anyone, it was a disaster but he didn’t really offer much. I still wonder if those who think there’s a player in there are hoping rather than knowing…

We're not gonna be releasing him and not paying him though, are we? He's well within his rights to refuse any contract termination that isn't paid up in full, so the being out of work thing is a moot point.

Pretty much everyone on here has been respectful enough to say they feel for the guy, but the fact of the matter is that he's a top earner at the club and we've currently got two fit wingers in a squad (one of them being an 18 year old loanee) that's going for promotion. Yes, that's also on Grant and it's also on Wright but unfortunately for Scannell he has a longer history of injuries than Grant and will be on a higher wage than Wright. If we weren't fortunate enough to have someone as versatile as Harry Clifton who would probably pull pints in the fanzone if we asked him to then we'd have had a few occasions already this season when we'd be looking at YT graduates and lower down to plug the gaps. Whether or not Scannell stays or is released, one thing is clear and that's that we can't continue with just two fit wingers in the squad.

Not sure what Morais has done wrong. Lovely crosser of the ball, intelligent footballer. Legs not what they were, particularly off the ball. Scannell? We'll have to see his contract out, or maybe come to an arrangement to pay him off early. That said, things like if he's signed a tenancy agreement, nobody will take him on I'd have thought so he won't have anything lined up. He's finished I'm afraid, shame as he's shown glimpses of talent way above this level but he'll never be fit. His body has given up.

Can't agree with the fact he didn't offer much, you only had to have watched Exeter at Home, Crawley Away and Port Vale Home to know that there is a very good player in there. Ironically they were the games he got the most minutes in last season.

It's not his fault he's injured so often and for me it's obvious that he would have a big impact at this level if fit.

Absolutely. There won’t be many pro footballers who haven’t hyperextended their knee at some point.
