Great win for Cleethorpes yesterday, does anyone know how many more rounds they’d need to get through to be in the hat for a draw versus Town?

Town v The Owls at BP would be such a great event for all I reckon.

It would be a good earner for them if they drew GTFC , I’d never forgive them if they beat us though

they have done really well to beat Alfreton, they are in the conference north so to beat a team who are a few levels above them is always impressive

Would be very interesting location wise if we drew them. Maybe even attract media attention. If it fell at their place then Grimsby are playing Cleethorpes away in Grimsby and vice versa lol All said, it would be a great occasion for the local community.

Surely if we were away to them, then it would be best for everyone if BP was used with Town as the away team, but with Clee fans in the Osmond. More money for everyone.

Would be a good little earner for them though…

Excellent result for them and im sure they’re hoping for the lowest ranked side left at home, as the chance to play us, or a Notts County, Wrexham etc comes into play 4th round

There are 62 names in the hat for the 4th qualifying round and I think it's regionalised into North and South so there would be around 1 in 30 chance of the two clubs being drawn together, should Clee make it into the hat.

I’d like Cleethorpes Town to avoid Grimsby Town until the first round proper. I don’t want it to be us to end what could be a historic run for them, until that stage. Then a televised game at BP so both clubs can benefit.

It’d give us a relatively easy game in R1 assuming we get there (not counting any chickens on that score!).

They could potentially draw York City at home in the next round.

Batch, K.Moore, Waters, Wiggington, Crombie, Brolly, Ford, Drinkell, Mitchell, Cumming, Kilmore. D.Moore, Stone, Liddell. ....1979/80..... now that WAS a team.

We beat them 4-0 away in the FA Cup in 1887-1888 and then beat Lincoln in the next round. I'd settle for that

Mind you we got knocked out by Old Foresters, they sound a bit like Village Green (although are from North London I believe).

Fair play to Cleethorpes.  Its a non league equivalent of a league 2 side beating a championship side

I dunno Hagrid. It’s got “the romance of the Cup” written all over it. Plus Town’s resurgence under 1878 (and Stockwood has a bit of a national media profile). And It’s ‘the Friendly Derby’ and the quirk of the clubs playing in each other’s towns.

Not for me mate, if we were a league club, yes i’d agree. But with Sunderland, Pompey, Wednesday all big clubs they’ll be chosen. Plus the lowest ranked teams

If they did win the next round and the 4th qualifying draw was Cleethorpes Town v Grimsby Town, I wonder where the game would be played, as there's no way that their ground could deal with hosting the match.

They've drawn Curzon Ashton away in the 3rd qualifying round. CA currently sit 3rd in the National League North so another big test for them.

If they can win this one then the next round is when we enter the competition.

I seem to remember we played them in the Trophy or maybe Cup.

🤞for Clee.

(Ps think it would be cool to rename themselves Old Clee as that’s where they play, and then some of their opponents will be beaten by a ‘village team’). 😉

It's very odd to say the least.  Most local teams hate each other.  I'd follow Cleethorpes as a second team.  I guess a lot of older people from Gy were born in Cleethorpes.

So London-centric BBC Sport. Based in Salford.

Have you not noticed recent years games have included Marine FC (that little known London suburb of Crosby) or Salford (handy for Charing Cross).

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

If Cleethorpes get through there is a very good chance of them being on TV, especially if they draw a National League team as they would be one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition.

They have done well to get this far. To put it into perspective, their next game is their 5th round as they had to play 2 preliminary rounds before the 1st, 2nd and upcoming 3rd qualifying round which is the equivalent of us going on to reach the 4th Round.

Personal experience of Cleethorpes Town over a good many years is that they are only ever willing to spout this our friends down the road illusion when it suits them, and when they are getting something out of it for themselves.

I’m not fooled at all by this community spirit thing that seems to be getting put about quite a bit recently by The Trust and one or two others when it comes to Clee. There are people at Clee Town who are really two faced about us when it suits them.

Frankly Grimsby Borough are far more transparent in their dislike for us, and at least you know where you stand with them when it comes to them not being two faced about it.

So I’d sooner we didn’t get any chance to play Clee in the FA Cup and swell their bank balance. I won’t lose any sleep when Curzon Ashton knock them out of the competition.

Really? I always get the impression that they are a well run club with ambitions going forward, I don't think they will see themselves as any sort of threat to us and they never try and pinch our fans away as they only ever say things along the line of "Grimsby away game sold out? Come down to watch us for your fix of footy". Good luck to them and any other club trying to make a name for themselves, it's a long journey in the early rounds of the FA cup just to get to the bigger teams and bigger money

Just maybe and I've got no information on this but could it be the way they have been treated in the past.. didn't we let them keep the gate receipts this pre season etc

They are a well run club and I think they do get frustrated at the lack of media coverage they receive when things are going well.

They appear to be well run and their ground is improving steadily year on year. At the moment there are 3 levels separating us so they aren't really a threat and I think the highest they can realistically get without a huge injection of capital is the National League North.

I think the two clubs need to get along because they offer an opportunity to a lot of lads that don't get a pro deal but could also be a first loan move for some of our young lads.

There is a guy who goes there for his football fix who has a degenerative eye disease and found it difficult watching the game at BP from his season ticket seat. Under the old regime, he spoke to someone at the club and they refused to accommodate his request.

Cleethorpes Town games are usually quite entertaining, you can watch whilst having a pint and if they lose, it doesn't ruin your weekend so I see the attraction when town aren't at home or you can't go to an away game.

I’ve no problem with small clubs like Clee per se

Grassroots football is very much to be applauded and is the foundation of everything that then moves upwards. So I apologise if I gave the impression that I am dismissive of small grassroots clubs. That wasn’t my intention

My problem has been the specific things I’ve seen in terms of some people at Clee Town. In respect of them being smiley smiley about GTFC when it suits them, because they are benefitting from something, like a pre season game or a loan player. But then on the other hand they’ve been heard to openly berate and slag GTFC off on occasions, forgetting that there’s big benefits to their club in having a close relationship with us. There’s just no need for that, and over the years, in respect of those individuals, it’s left me quite resentful of how we have looked after them on occasions.

That’s all really

Have they slagged of GTFC recently or did they just have a problem with the previous regime? Which would be understandable.

Funny that because when I've spoken to them in the past they've always wanted a closer relationship with Grimsby.

But if insisting on half of the gate receipts because you need to pay player insurance counts as "looked after them in the past" I suppose they were. The gate money from those games goes a long way for a club like Cleethorpes and the biggest benefit to ourselves is that it gets some vital minutes into our players. If that means we have to pay to play the game, so be it in my eyes.

I’m not sure who at Clee has told you that previously sharing gate receipts was anything to do with player insurance? But I can assure you that has never been the reason.

The club has an annual insurance policy for players that covers them for all fixtures (league/cup/friendlies) and for training. For both home games and away games.

It doesn’t cover medical treatment for any serious or long term injuries, which is something that the club has historically had to look after. There have been occasions where the owner of the club has actually paid personally for serious medical treatment for injuries. Such as the treatment the owner paid out of his own pocket for Josh Gowling

that the reason he wouldnt stretch to a 2 year contract for Podge, or 50 quid more a week for Nathan Arnold, the list goes on

So replace Clee Town with 'Grimsby Town 2004-2021' and GTFC with 'Grimsby Town fans 2004-2021'...then do you see the absolute irony of what you've said?

Knowing what Felipe and his mates and masters were like, you can well understand people at CTFC not being charitable about Grimsby Town.
