Mmm this is going to get a few crosses, but it isnt right for him to be getting so many injuries. And it’ll cost him come the end of the season because he’s not going to get a contract when he is constantly injured. People slated Hanson for being a sick note, max played 8 games last season…

Max gets a bit of free ride due to him being home grown but these injuries are getting too much now It's every time he plays he gets another one, starting to wonder if his body just isn't up to the rigours of full time professional football. Kills me to say it but I'm with Hagrid, as this rate I doubt he'll be here next season, absolute crying shame because on his day he's cracking player, feel for him too, loves the club..

Hopefully the extra facilities and staff weve got will help us reduce injuries and recovery times because we seem to have alot of issues with them as a club

Something isn't right is it? He literally comes off the bench for 15 minutes and he's out again.

He certainly isn't up to playing 2 games in a week as a matter of routine. Hopefully the club will manage him this season and not try and get him on the pitch twice in a week anymore. I know it sounds ridiculous but his body isn't up to that. The club need to understand that and work with it. His body needs recovery between matches. Just maybe if that's done he can get 20 odd games a season or so in without being injured all the time.
Absolute shame because he has the ability and desire no doubt.

I wouldn't write him off that quickly, lots of players of his age suffer with a spate of injury problems whilst their bodies are transitioning from being a youth to a man.

I saw a lot of him during his loan at Boston and he handled bad pitches and 2 games in a week there. We need to get to the bottom of it and it really is a shame.

Worth remembering that this is something beyond his control. If you think it's frustrating then imagine how he feels with the prospect of his livelihood being in jeopardy. He's a very good footballer and from my brief interactions a very good lad. We can't carry someone playing 10 games a year but I really hope they sort it for him and us.

I didn't realise he was 23, thought he was about 20-21. He's shot up quick Hurst did say something pre or post Wrexham match about Max being a complex character, maybe he's one of those players who is hyper-sensitive about every minor tweak/pain they feel and has become over paranoid about sustaining another long term injury so rules himself out of games? Unless it was a clear cut medical issue, I'd personally still give him a bit more time than this season to see if the issue can be overcome, as he does have the potential to be very good. I think I read that Scott McTominay suffered with injuries for a good few years before he suddenly grew into his body properly and then at 23-24 burst through into a regular starter. Not saying Max is in that class of player, but we can't be paying him loads, he's local and has talent, so I'd at least offer another season - maybe heavily incentivised to appearances, if it's a mental barrier rather than a physical issue then that would maybe focus the mind to get over it.

There was a point, in the season before last, when I felt the first team was relying on Max as the only one who could conjure up a bit of magic.
Possibly true, at the time. It seemed like he'd become a key player.
Sadly he's gone backwards in the two years since, mostly through rotten luck with injuries. He played a lot of football at Boston and was too good for that level. We know he has the potential to be a great player at this level.
I just hope he catches a break as we'll all benefit from that.

Some players bodies struggle with playing full time at a pro level. Scannell is another one, wouldn't be playing for us if he remained injury free but struggled with injuries his entire career starting at 18 when he moved into the professional game with a knee injury. Since then constant struggles with knees and groin injuries, Michael Reddy again played for us because of injury issues holding him back, got a couple of seasons out of him before his various injuries forced him to retire.
All of them are pacey players, it seems like pace and having that ability to create a burst of speed can leave some players injury prone. Feel for the lad, hope we can find some way of managing the issues he's been having to get him more game time.

Looking at his build he might be hypermobile which means lax ligaments and more stress on the tendon insertion to the muscle to hold the lax joint in place.

Yep - more suited to working with the Cliftons perhaps than at Cheapside. No doubt the Town conditioning and physio team will work hard to keep him on the pitch for as much of the season as possible.

I was told pretty much this maybe not exactly word for word but very close to what you describe. How did he manage to play regularly for Scarborough but not now ? Is it because his body was younger then ? You clearly have some knowledge on this type of thing Limerick

Also a sufferer. I'd play a game - no traumatic injury incident during the game but the next day I'd wake up with a sore achilles / knee / hamstring / groin / hip - seemed like just random injuries appearing. Of course, the NHS are not great on these kind of chronic things and 30+ years ago when I was playing hypermobility wasn't really a thing. It was only a casual remark by made by a biomechanics specialist to me a few years ago that caused me to look it up - and realised yes that was me all along. I had to give up playing both football and cricket as I kept wicket and it ended up being agony in all the leg / hip joint systems. It's all about microtrauma in the muscle especially near the tendon as the brain is sending a message - keep that feckin lax joint in place - the muscle overworks and tiny tears lead to scarring tissue and pain. I'm sure he'll be doing weights to keep strong but not too heavy - you don't want big fat muscles in the middle - that's more weight for the joint to handle, you want long lean wiry muscle to give good strength through the whole range of motion. Pilates type stuff works really well. As over time you get more micro-trauma points so perhaps that explains where Max is with this at the moment. Let's hope he can at least give us some great impact appearances off the bench.

My niece has it. In her case she doesn’t even need to do any Sport to trigger off attacks. My youngest might be affected to a much lesser degree (double-jointed elbows/shoulder) and some on her mum’s side too. Fortunately although she does a lot of sport/dance she doesn’t suffer much (yet?).

Fascinating input here for anyone with the slightest interest in Sports Science/Strength & Conditioning.
My previous thoughts with Max was that he was more a victim of the poor set-up at the club, however with the improvements I'd have hoped he would started to produce more consistency in terms of his availability. That said, if his issues haven't been addressed for the last god knows how many years, it's unlikely we'll see an instant improvement.
For his sake I hope it can be sorted. The lad has some serious potential but needs to get going and to do so sharpish.

Thank you for your insight into something I know nothing about. A gold star for you and hope that Max can cope with it, making excellent performances when he can.

I was exactly the same. I’d play on the Sunday, and wake up really wrecked on the Monday especially after resting in the RNA club, the dollie and dominics. Maybe I over did it walking between them
