Either that, or a record of one win in fifteen games.

Indeed. Hurst's record at Ipswich was absolutely dismal and it's quite remarkable just how wrong he got it after the job he'd just done at Shrewsbury in keeping them in League One against the odds and then coming so close to winning promotion to the Championship.

I'm not sure what went wrong there. Was the job a poisoned chalice? Ipswich were already in decline at the time and sold their best two players in Adam Webster and Martyn Waghorn for the best part of £10m. Did Hurst underestimate the quality of the Championship? I don't know, but exclusively signing players from Leagues One and Two (three of which were not long out of non-league) always looked risky and naïve, and so it proved.

Hurst always struck me as a man who learned more from his defeats than his victories though, so hopefully we can be the beneficiaries of his experience this time around.

Ipswich was a poisoned chalice when Hurst took over. They were cutting costs, selling players to bring their wage bill down and expecting Hurst to build a winning team. Maybe the players he signed were what they could afford rather than what he wanted.

Dont forget it happened to the Cowleys maybe they struggled with the director of football (not sure if Ipswich had one)

I think at Ipswich it was a mixture of both, Ipswich being on the decline but also I do think Hurst being out of his depth in the championship tactically, also he never had the contacts needed and his signings from league 1 and 2 reflected that.

Then onto Scunthorpe in which again he got sacked but I do think Scunny are a basket case and no manager could do anything there.

Had the pleasure of meeting David Prutton yesterday, through work. Very likeable bloke — shared some of his memories of playing at Grimsby for Forest. He remembered the 4-3 game (although forgot that Beasant and Hjelde got sent off in the match).

He's a big fan of Jack Lester. Remembered how excited the club was to sign him. All his teammates found him difficult to deal with in training because of his ability to win fouls. Really rates him as a youth coach and they're still mates.

Doesn't know Doig now but remembers him from Forest. Always thought he'd have a good career and go into coaching. 'Every club needs a Doigy' were his words.

Naturally, I told him all the Holloway stuff. Don't think he knows him well, but has probably spoken to him via Sky over time. Obviously there's a lot about our past two decades he knew nothing about, but he did know the name 'John Fenty'. Funny what sticks.

Listened to Super Jack speaking at an event a couple of years ago and was really impressed with how he dedicated himself to coaching. In particular how, once he got into it and realised it wasn't easy to convey what he knew how to do as a player when coaching a young player, completely threw himself into studying coaching and everything involved with it. Spent a lot of time learning about the process of learning, how to develop players, how to develop psychology and mindset etc etc.

Has some interesting ideas and seems to be quite an innovative thinker when it comes to being a coach. There's a couple of articles floating around somewhere of his work as a coach that are interesting reads.
