Four things since then have put me off. The first is the ridiculous way opening and closing ceremonies turned into a competition of their own. The second was the way that the Games became political especially after 1976. The third is the inclusion of more and more “sports” that need judges to declare a winner. And the fourth is that cheating is rife, especially via drugs. That was child’s play compared to the gymnasts, athletes and swimmers from the Eastern Bloc and the US college system.
