Team news: Waterfall returns
The big news this afternoon is Luke Waterfall returns to the side as Paul Hurst looks to be going with three at the back.

Sam Habergham is also back in as Harry Clifton moves into midfield.

TOWN: McKeown, Hendrie, Menayese, Hewitt, Waterfall, Habergham, Matete, Clifton, John-Lewis, Payne, Hanson.

Subs: Battersby, Coke, Lamy, Williams, Spokes, Jackson Jr, Green.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Hmmm. I can only see Waterfall being picked to possibly help out in the air from the long throws. Lets face it, he isnt good anywhere else.

Good to see the 3 front men up there again. They may not produce much of an end result but they are good at putting themselves about a bit.

Its only just dawned on me. Even though Macca has been playing recently, the Captain's armband has been on LJL. Maybe Hurst does read The Fishy after all.

I will go with that.
Get the kitchen sink in there

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Surprised he has kept the front three and not given Jackson Jr a start bearing in mind they all played Friday.

Think it’s a sensible team selection especially with the wind and the style of the opposition

If we’re happy to see 3 strikers not producing any end result then we truly have hit rock bottom

Hope it is 3-4-3 and not 5-2-3 or Clifton and Matete are going to be very busy!

Back 3 with Hendrie & Habergham as wing backs? Or Back 4 with Elliott Hewitt into midfield with Matete & Clifton to match up their central midfield 3?

                  McKEOWN
HENDRIE     MENAYESE  WATERFALL   HABERGHAM
         MATETE    HEWITT    CLIFTON
  JOHN-LEWIS       HANSON          PAYNE

                    -OR-

                  McKEOWN
       MENAYESE    HEWITT    WATERFALL
HENDRIE                           HABERGHAM
            MATETE        CLIFTON
  JOHN-LEWIS       HANSON          PAYNE

If it isn’t a 5-2-3 I’ll be stunned, Hendrie and Habergham are not mobile enough to play the wing back role

Apologies Hagrid, I’m working on the positivity but being bottom of the entire football league does crazy things to you.

Not confident with this line up. Think we're going to struggle going forward and end up sitting deep which plays into their hands and gives them a platform to lump it into our box...hope I'm wrong!

Nope sorry zero confindence in this formation we've had zero to very little success with it for the last 3+ years no matter whos tried to run it, often concede heavily and create nothing as our "Wingbacks" are always pinned back

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Looks like being in the refs ear is standard practice nowadays.

Hendrie’s passing/delivery is shocking. How many aimless punts from him that have gone out for a goal kick?

So why did Waterfall have to go off for treatment?

Looks like the ref needs eyes in his @rse plenty going on off the ball.

FFS stfu, he has won absolutely loads of headers in this first half, he couldn't get to that one for Town players in front of him.  Some people just wait to have a go at our players, absolute w@ankers.

Dont know how much it's the defenders fault.its a speciality of cheltenham that much if the division has struggled to cope with. Got away with a disallowed goal there.we are starting to look a little fragile

Midfield two aren't supporting our front 3 enough, at least 1 of them has got to get further forward for when we don't win the header

HT....1-1

Not always the case that having a strong wind behind you is an advantage, ball runs away from the strikers.

Come on Town.

Half of 2 halves, but the players have done a decent job overall.

Interesting to see their manager having a go at the ref as he walks off, no surprise though.

Usual Town performance so far, look good, get a goal, fail to push on let opposition back and concede. Winds against us now, we'll probably be even more pinned in I'm not hopefully going forward at the moment

Can't have a go at thhe two central midfielders everything is going over them, they're merely spectators under the ball. For me I'd turn them into a cdm and cam and take a bit of a gamble in that sense... Overall an almost enjoyable half to watch. Trying to forget our league position I've enjoyed that half..

Regards the long throws. They can't be offside so why not put a player on each post? If someone was on the front post for that throw 9/10 they'd have cleared it away.

Seen how much ground the two of them are having to cover? They need a bit of help, I’d like to see one of the wingers on to give them a bit of support deeper.

Not a bad half against a decent team. Need a bit of luck for a win.

Just looked at their goal again. Town should have know what was going to happen. Nobody blocked the run of Boyle, effectively a free header.

Don't know what to think about Payne, does nothing and then creates the goal, then nothing. On the whole though we are as good as them. Need a win especially as Colchester are winning.

Same as virtually every game this last month, start well, create a few chances, opposition tweeks their plan (Their midfield are now standing within 5 yards of their defenders for long goal/free kicks and picking up all the 2nd balls as our mid 2 are standing 15 yards further back. We had 5 I think of our defenders jumping with 2 of theirs and one gets a free header on goal and scores. I'm worried for the 2nd half as clearances wont go far but wind will make it easy for Toszer to chuck it in from anywhere in the final 3rd of the pitch. I think we will need some pace on up top as through balls should hold up and be easy to get onto.
I get a feeling though its going to be a bit of a backs to the wall job and a defeat now because as usual we couldn't get a 2nd/3rd when on top.

If nobody knew, you wouldn't think Town were bottom of the table team.   Compare this game to some in December.  It's a shame we didn't hit a bit of form earlier. I'm sure a lot of our misses and soft goals are down to how much fear the players are feeling.  That's when you make mistakes.

Have you seen the gap between our midfield our of strikers? Its not about how much ground they're covering. Cheltenham have got back in this game because their midifeld has dropped depp to support their CBs when we hoof the ball forward so they can scoop up the loose ball if they win the header, neither CLifton nor Matete are high enough to challenge that second ball. Our wingbacks have been pinned back because we're not winning the 2nd ball when its cleared by their CBs

Need to keep the ball on the deck.  Wind is holding it up too much.  Wish we had somebody that could run at the fullbacks.

Macca macca macca

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Clifton is not at the races today. The lad can't control a ball. Just means we have no creativity in midfield when we do manage to clear our lines.

e: look at that, he's just ruined a counter attack by passing it straight into touch under no pressure.

What is it with Refs
Hand ball you twit

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Just like every other game I’ve watched this season , we’re chasing a goal we’re never going to get with all our players with the ability and skill to attack on the bench or not even in the squad.
Hurst is not a manager to close a 7 point gap although I’m sure he’ll tell us it’s a good result against a team pushing for promotion

How was that not a red card ??

Yet again , in isolation , at any other time ,  a good result given the opposition & conditions.

Just not enough to help us climb out of the sh!t though.

All Green has to do is lob it and instead puttles it with outside of his right foot straight at him, Looking a 2nd time I think it would of curled wide as well. Another 3 points given away. See you all at Altrincam next season

Could have been 5-5 with some of those chances. By far the most clear cut chances we've had in a game probably this season, yet it feels like one of our worst performances in this unbeaten run.

Think it's criminal that we didn't try and win the game with some positive substitutions.

How we are not surrounding the ref after that potential handball from the keeper is a complete mystery. Teams do that all the time and get the decision.

yes, hanson and green had chances , but by christ we did well/were bloody lucky to get a point. Macca's saves, the muffed 1 on 1 chance from their sub and williams hitting the inside of the post, plus the incessant throws, corners and free kicks.
in any other circumstances it'd be a great point won, as it is we are very fortunate that the gap hasn't got any worse.
Have to say Cheltenham are a very effective side. No lack of effort and everyone has given their all.
i know people are moaning about the subs, but he was about to make them and then we got that second wind and starting pushing them back. If he'd made the changes then we'd have been asking wtf he was changing it for when we looked like we'd weathered the storm

I think if we’d have gone too open they would have battered us but with 15 mins to go we needed more up front and in midfield and just brining on Coke wasn’t the answer. I’m a supporter of Hurst but can’t see what we where trying to do in the 2nd half, though they are an effective side let’s not forget that.

The bit that irritates me is that when Hanson and Green has chances they had nobody up there with them to square the ball to.

Gutted really, so torn on Hurst, he’s made us so much harder to beat but I’d genuinely have rather lost a couple of these games just to watch us have a bloody go at it. Unforgivable how late he changed things.

trying not to get an absolute drubbing. Macca made 2 brilliant saves in the first 2  minutes, and we hardly had the ball in their half during the 3rd quarter. i'd love someone to tell me how many attacking throws, free kicks and corners they had in the 2nd half.
as bucks town said they'd have carved us apart if he'd changed it too early or radically.

I'd have settled for a point. I have hatred in my heart for Cheltenham and wish they would stick to horse lepping. I still have not got over the 2006 play-off final.

But remember they gave City more than a good game in the FA Cup until Phil Foden turned the match.

Typical gtfc performance on top score, fail to get 2nd, let opposition back into game, concede, fail to do very little positively for rest of game, lucky to draw/predictable loss. Rinse and repeat each game. Add to that Hursts subs, late, baffling and ineffective

Hung on to get a 1-1 that in any other predicament would have been a great point.

But, in all honesty I’m not sure how Cheltenham haven’t won that game with the chances they’ve had.

Hurst has built a team that is incredibly hard working without the ball, that nobody can seem to beat at the moment. But we don’t have enough quality when we are in possession.

Sad to say that Harry Clifton doesn’t have what’s needed.

The wing backs just didn’t get out and high today enough and were constantly pinned back.

In order for that formation it’s got to be fast on the counter attack, and we just don’t have any pace going forward.

Not sure if that is one more game towards safety, or one game closer to relegation. I fear it’s the latter.

Hurst out he is useless a draw merchant yesterdays man sack him

I can already see Hurst's idea of a perfect season next year:

     P    W    D    L    F    A    Pts
    46    0    46   0   46   46   46

Which is why we were always off the pace for automatic promotion in his National League seasons.

To achieve automatic promotion the team needs to be averaging 2 points per game from match 1, so slow starters never get up to pace and the play-offs is the best that can be hoped for. So no more 'Parslow Points', as stated elsewhere a win and a defeat gets 50% more points than two draws.

Why have you singled Clifton out?

Because today that area of the pitch needed some strength to get us playing forward and none of them in there showed they had it.

In terms of being sad about Harry, I guess it saddens me more than the way I view the others, as he’s a local lad and I’d dearly love him to be a great player for us. But I just don’t see him ever having the quality to be the GTFC legend I’d love him to be

The bit that irritates me is that when Hanson and Green has chances they had nobody up there with them to square the ball to.

They did have clear cut gilt edge chances and they are supposed to be attackers.

I thought that would’ve been a brilliant result if we hadn’t been bottom, since we were battered most of the game. Hewitt the unsung hero today and probably against Salford too.

On today’s performance was Mattette any better? You can’t honestly single anyone out I think the lads did their best versus a well organised side who are much better than us in many areas.

Yep. Doesn't matter if you're tenth after ten games because the season is 46games
Don't forget either that you don't need a goalscorer in the team.

Yes I’d say Matete was the busier of the players in there

As I’ve said, my sadness with regards to Harry is that he’s a local and I really want him to be a legend, but I don’t think he’s going to be

Absolutely right. When we turn over possession and win the ball, we just don’t counter at pace or in numbers

It’s not enough to win the ball and hit channels. We’ve got to get players forward

It’s not enough to find Hanson in the air, we’ve got to get players forward to play off his 2nd’s

I thought after we scored we were pretty awful. Just not good enough. Missed placed passes too regular and a lot of hoofing. Not good enough and have not been so all season. I live in hope but head tells me it’s done and dusted. Btw Green should  have scored at the end but hey how many times have we said that about chances players have had

Viewed as a single game a point against promotion chasers, best away record in league, and a team who threatened to batter us second half it's a good point
But we need more - and although I am a PH fan one of his main weaknesses is use of subs...too little, too conservative, too late
What has Williams done wrong? He transformed match v Mansfield and scored a corker and nearly won it
Spokes - obviously has talent (goal against Barrow)
Jackson - scored a couple of important goals

We need to win games!

But PH would argue we still created two golden chances using the players he started with and brought on

Opinions etc - but we missed a trick today IMO

Could be ‘Devs’ - Paul is saving those players you mention for the surprise element in the ‘death games’.

Unbeaten in 8 - didn’t fancy line up today to win - but they didn’t lose.
I think Town now capable of beating the divisions leading sides - Dev has highlighted players not playing - who can be match winners.
Brinksmanship by Paul maybe - but 46 games will decide outcome.

He cant really win can he? If hed slung William's etc on earlier and we had got beat everyone would be up in arms. If green had stuck that chance away we'd be saying what a great substitution

Ps did any of the critics actually watch the game, coz we didbloody well to battle through a battering to get a point?

Every manager's dilemma, to sub or not? Do it and your wrong, don't do it, and your wrong, get a winning goal, and what a fantastic decision that was.

In any other circumstance, I would have said it was a good result against a top of the league side, but we're bottom and it's another 2 points lost.

I’m with you Forza, if that had been a boxing match the ref would’ve stopped it 10 mins in to the 2nd half, but  we hung in there, and actually had two very good chances to score.
Regarding the subs, I would’ve liked more attacking intent but was equally worried that they could grab a couple of goals at anytime, I also thought we did look a little more threatening after Coke came on as he managed to hold the ball to help join up play from back to front (something we didn’t see much of from Harry or Jay today)

Isn't it funny how we all see the games differently?

Going into the game I was naturally disappointed that we tweaked the formation and side to basically counter the opposition, it doesn't matter if we're playing Southend, Cheltenham or Chelsea, I'm always disappointed to see this.
However we have to be realistic and accept that Cheltenham are a far better sides than us, they're incredibly direct and effective with it plus it was terrible conditions.  There's no way on earth that the ball was going to spend much time at all on the deck yesterday, in my view Hurst got it right in putting his big lads in and hoping to nullify what they came with.   Even with a formation that tried to counter them, we still deserved to lose by a distance.  Taking the game to them would have resulted in an absolute drubbing, no doubt denting confidence too.

The problem is that our situation dictates that we need wins, even against sides at the pointy end of the stick we can't afford draws.  This was and always should have been a game to grind a point of from.  It was the Colchester, the Barrow, the Stevenage type games where we should have taken maximum points and that's what has cost us.

No issue at all with the way Hurst set-up.  Thought he got it right and with all the improvements in the world, we're not going to be at the level of a Cheltenham this season.    Did he he get his subs wrong?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  For all the calling for Williams to come on, he's spent 7 months doing absolute jaff all and bottling anything physical - so after one very decent free-kick against Mansfield, I'm not sure why he's suddenly suited to coming on and changing the game against a side of very physical lads.  Times in recent weeks when I've felt he should have come on but yesterday wasn't one of them at all.

Green?  Yeah, maybe go with Jackson over him.  But Jackson too is one of those who has seemingly got better the less he's played.  After that who do you bring on?  Saw quite a lot of moaning about taking LJL off for Coke.  Personally would have kept LJL on, especially when Hanson looked dead on his feet, but Cheltenham were running riot at that point, by bringing Coke on it gave us an extra barrier and helped stop the barrage a bit.

Despite the fact we took a battering and escaped with a point.  We could and probably should have snatched all 3.  Hanson's chance was bloody glorious, Green's was even better.

I don't want to dig Green out for the sake of it but after missing a golden chance like that, a chance to prove he's done something/anything this season, especially right at the death.  I wanted to see him at the final whistle (which was literally seconds after his miss) with his head in his hands and punching the floor.  Instead he was straight over to one of their players to shake their hand and have a hug.  It might not be the case at all but if he's trying to give the impression that he cares....he's not doing a very good job of it.

Back to Hurst.  He's made us difficult to beat, he's made the midfield competitive, we're creating enough gilt-edged chances.  Other than take those chances himself, I'm not sure what else he can do?    For all the argument that he's negative and playing out draws, if our strikers had taken half their chances we would be home and dry by now.
