No Hanson?

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Good to see Ira getting his chance. Let's hope he can deliver the goods today. A win will keep us in with just a sniff of a chance. Any less and we'll be hearing the dulcet tones of the fat lass.

Still haven't decided to buy the game or not.

Any advice welcome?

Do you have anything better to be doing on a Saturday afternoon right now? I don't in the current climate so I'll probably be buying games for the rest of the season regardless of if we stay up or not.

Yup.  I hope they do us more favours than bloody Newport who let everyone but us beat them. They have beaten us twice in the last 20 odd games and almost no body else!

Good to see Jackson playing right wing....thats where he played last season when he scored all his goals rather than upfront.
We will win today as i have to go out and will miss it.

Horse racing far more interesting now . Can’t even be ars.ed to listen to it . I’ve got town in my football bet today at a touch over 4/1 so not totally given up on us . We’re due a win by the law of averages.

Good start

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Looking forward to this.  Actually got a win last night .  First home game since January due to a small COVID outbreak.  Despite dominating the game for 45 minutes against local rivals and scumbags Saigon, we never had a shot on goal - sound familiar?  The opposition had little possession but more chances - sound familiar?  Halfway through the second period they were awarded a penalty against the run of play.  It wasn't a pen - sound familiar.  I thought oh no , here we go again. Our keeper hadn't red the script and pushed it against the bar and got to it before it crossed the line. We had a shout for an obvious penalty but it was waved away - sound familiar? Saigon resorted to gamesmanship.  Going down with cramp etc.  Five mins extra time. first minute was the Saigon players rolling around. 96th minute get the ball into the box and their defender upended our striker.  Finally, a bloody win. Come on Town.  They need to get some composure.

Wow, what a goal. Got to ask who should be picking him up, but Macca stood now chance

The inevitability of us going behind after Barrow go in front is just what I expected.

Absolutely no hope in any game at any time against any opposition. Has to be the worst Town side ever and that takes some doing.

Sick to fooking death of this sh1te, game after game, season after season.

We won't score because our attacking tactic is to urine about in non-threatening positions before eventually deciding to just lump it forwards onto a defender's head. We don't have a player on the pitch capable of beating a man, so it's really simple for Mansfield just to sit deep and clear our aimless punts. The only way we will score is if we get a lucky bounce or through a defensive mistake.

It's criminal.  It's the one thing you can practise.  Stick a dustbin in the box and get in before you get home.   That last Mansfield free kick is how it's done. Inswinger with pace, just needs helping on or changing direction.

Felt this way for a couple of seasons now, every game we look like a team from a couple of leagues below our opposition. They look stronger, faster and their football flows. Everything we do looks clumsy and is easily stopped before a move starts. Our players stumble around the field in defence or attack looking lost.

Not that it will matter.

Waterfall is a flipping moron. Absolutely loves giving away stupid cheap fouls in the opposition box. We'd be better off leaving him back on the half way line whenever we get a set piece.

The same garbage we've seen all season. Absolutely rubbish. No gameplan, no forward movement, can't cross a ball, can't win a tackle in the second phase. It's laughable.

Payne reminds me of Simeon Jackson, as I recall he scored on his debut too then didn't do anything of note. Seems really lazy, won't chase a ball, gets rid of it when he gets it.

I have stopped watching as suddenly wondered why I was spending £10 or £20 a week for something that was bringing me no pleasure. Now feel surprisingly zen about the inevitable relegation and am just thinking how great it will be to go to a game next season under new owners with a properly built squad after a proper pre-season. If that's against Maidenhead so be it, it will be better than this.

the decision making by these players beggars belief. Terrible passing in to dangerous areas, just inviting trouble. What a shower this lot are. I hope at season end the vast majority are shipped out

Garbage, zero goal threat and both central mid field players completely anonymous. The midfield look far to deep.

“Us shape” doesn’t appear to be working.

Theyve looked a beaten team since kickoff
Literally nothing positive all half
After the manager telling us they're putting putting the effort in, I expected a lot more

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

I was just driving through Bromley this morning thinking "Well, I guess I'll be coming here next season".  I've accepted our fate...like Rodley Mariner.... it brings with it a zen-like calm.

This is the worst season I can remember - no goals, no drive....

Good corner that, right where you'd want the ball to drop, yet for some reason we had no players anywhere near it and the defender can head it away under no pressure?! What the intercourse are they doing while practicing set pieces all week?

I guess this lot know new owners coming in mean that the vast majority of them will soon be looking for a new club a long way down the pyramid and have thrown in the towel .

Hard watch that, some poor defending wide allowed the space for the goal we don’t look threatening.
Wide players and front 2 have struggled to get into the game. They’re excrement and we need a better half. Maybe a change of shape required with 3 in the middle.

Stefan Payne is offering naff all!..at least Lenny is trying to hassle the defenders but the refs favouring Mansfield.
Matete needs to move forward with the ball more, Coke not tearing any trees up and you can just what Waterfall doesn't offer anymore.
Hate to say this but Ira's been poor, was hoping for more out of him.
Needs to change it up at half time, Coke off for Spokes, Payne off for Williams.

Well pretty obvious we are suffering from injuries but without a single natural left footer on the pitch we are severely hampered defensively and attack wise.
Payne and LJL may as well not be on the pitch, limited service but when they have seen the ball they havnt retained it.
I would change to 4-5-1 and try and build through the midfield,  as the neither of the front line are winning headers, we arent playing channel balls to get them turned as we dont have any pace so absolutely pointless keeping them both on.
I would leave Payne on as he is the better finisher.

Thing is we are only 1-0 down and yet we all know we haven't got a hope in hell of turning it around and getting the win we need.

Please quote this and give me abuse if we win.

Need a boot up the arce at half time.

You think Hurst will do that? The same man who said our players can’t be accused of not trying?

Wow, you know when things are bad when fans are calling for Williams to come on!

Based on his earlier performances he is considered by some to be one of the worst to ever wear the shirt!

What can you say about this load of crap dressed up as a football team. They are a disgrace to the profession. the club and more importantly us.

I live in hope every pre match only to be disappointed time and time again. Whatever Hurst does, if anything, or says at half time will not be good enough. Barrow are winning and the parachute is opening up to the NL.  Apart from Macca who couldn't help the goal, the rest may as well get on that bus home and save us the agony of having to watch them.

It amazes me our non long throws are alwayus down the line to a player surrounded by three defenders and amazingly we lose possesion every time. We arev famous for giving away pointless  freekicks and conceding as a result. Mansfield have given us loads and we have not even created half an attempt out of them, but you never we might charge and win 5 - 1

In my opinion, its little wonder we have no attacking idea, we have 'keep up shape' in charge, assisted by another defender, in fact other than Woods in charge of the kids, I believe not one of our 'backroom team' were attack minded, and it shows.

There has been a lot of people on here this week brimming with positivity and creaming their pants following interviews with Hurst, Jackson, McKeown etc etc, Its just a shame that this is not turned in to improved performance !

Talk the talk and walk the walk springs to mind !  Another 45 minutes without a shot at goal is pathetic and the players and management should hang their heads in shame.

We truly are abysmal, the worst I have seen in 50 years of watching the Mariners.

I give up !

Bunch of frauds the lot of them. It’s about time they all lived in the real world and went and got proper jobs. How the intercourse can someone find so many no hopers? It must be harder to assemble a team this bad than a good team. Most of them can’t even kick a ball and the other half can only put their foot through it at best. LJL looks like he’s marking their defender rather than the other way around. Supporting Grimsby is like having you big fat sweaty bald uncle knobhead. Pick you up from school...embarrassing. We should have DNR across our shirts. This is a professional football club ffs.

It would be interesting to know after Philip Day said that money was no object in the transfer window, firstly

a) how much money was actually available for player purchases

and

b) How many players did Hurst actually try to sign for a fee

I'm going out on a limb here and saying a BIG FAT ZERO to both

Good corner that, right where you'd want the ball to drop, yet for some reason we had no players anywhere near it and the defender can head it away under no pressure?! What the intercourse are they doing while practicing set pieces all week?

Admittedly I've had spells not following Town since I started in 1978 but this is the worst I have ever seen.

Breaking news...the penny pinching has caught up with us again.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Dembele scored an absolute cracker today, and set up their second. We could well be quids in when he moves on.

We certainly need to splash the cash in the summer. Very few of this squad are good enough to be in a team that is serious about challenging for the NL title.

Well he has been Billy-No-Mates recently. He has had nobody to practise with so he has been 'crossing' the ball onto make believe players heads. Sadly they have all been painted 20 foot up the outside of the large storage unit at Cheapside

It was a direct free kick he smashed 20 yards over the bar. You don't need other players to practice those.

Watching Town on me telly
Absolutely excrement.
Watching Cricket on me phone
Get the cricket on Malan & Buttler going mad with the bat, some great stuff.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

It's got that feeling of inevitability about it now. Players have just accepted their fate and are waiting for the season to be over, so they can move on somewhere else. Going through the motions. No fight, no sparkle, no chance.

Don't, my favourite Town player of all time, started following Town in 1978.

He’s selling cars for a living now, I’ll just go to the show room once lockdown is done to remind myself what a good Town striker looks like.

Thing is we are only 1-0 down and yet we all know we haven't got a hope in hell of turning it around and getting the win we need.

Please quote this and give me abuse if we win.

and there are still people who want Hurst as manager next season

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Yes, because it's not his fault he's got a squad full of useless shite. This idea that he simply should have signed better players in January is flipping mad, no decent player was going to sign for a basket case club at the bottom of league two, which is why we brought in a load of unproven loanees, journeymen and non-league players. Alex Ferguson would struggle to get this squad scoring goals and winning games ffs.

As it stands - coupled with our abysmal goal difference - we are 12 points from safety.
This I now accept is unsurmountable.
We are truly awful - but then again  many have  accepted this for the best part of some time.
As has already been pointed on here  it's the hope that kills you.

Can anyone suggest a logical reason to take Jackson off for green and leave Payne still on the pitch? For the life of me I’m staggered by that one...

It doesn't matter what he does anymore.
He could put on any variation of player, makes little difference. They're all much of a muchness

Literally though, you could put mckeown up front and he'd do no worse

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

We are worse off with Hurst's signings.

I've already addressed this in a previous thread. It's completely revisionist and not true:

Quoted from Chrisblor

Yes, we were 22nd in the league when Hurst joined, and most of our wins were a result of individual performances by players who are now injured (Scannell, Wright, Pollock - still our top scorer ffs), had already departed (Windsor), or copulated off along with Holloway (Tilley, Edwards).

This idea you keep preaching that somehow we had a squad capable of keeping us in the league when Holloway left and Hurst joined is nonsense. We'd lost 5 of the last 7 when Holloway copulated off and the side had relegation written all over it. Constantly slagging off Hurst because he's not somehow managed to sign an entire new team of competent players in those circumstances is pinning the blame on the wrong target. Holloway, Fenty and the rest of the board are to blame - letting players like Vernam, Hessenthaler, Clarke and Davis leave on free transfers and telling prospective players we were going to potentially dock their wages with covid clauses when no other team were bothering with them. Those decisions were terminal and entirely on Holloway and the board.

We had a excrement squad when Hurst joined, we still have a excrement squad now. He's had one transfer window in dire circumstances to attempt to correct that. Who should he have signed in January with our budget, dilapidated training ground and unattractive location? Moan about Hurst all you want, but no manager was going to fix all the problems Holloway, Fenty and the outgoing board had caused in just 4 weeks in January.

Great free kick but unfortunately not enough, 3 points was a must.

That was nowhere near good enough but we deserved a point if not a bit more to be honest.

Thought Spokes & Williams made a difference, despite Williams wasting the last kick of the game. Can anyone tell me why we only started playing with 20 mins to go?

Well sodomist me read the post I quoted which explains the context Hurst joined in, our form and the availability of the players who drove the few decent results Holloway eked out at the start of the season.

Maybe we should limit Town's games to five minutes, we looked ok over the last five !

Never mind, another pointless point, should be good enough to get Hurst a new 25 yr contract !

Effectively 11 points from safety with 11 games left.

Need to win 7 from 11 I think.

No we dont

We've played 35 games. We haven't picked up a pathetic 28 points because of a lack of luck.

Hurst had impossible job
He knew (and 99% on here would agree) that squad he inherited was shite
So he had to do something
This squad/team is obviously playing for him
They have passion and fight  - but very little quality
He was never going to attract 5/6 quality players...but players who would care and fight for the club/him

4 unbeaten

It's not good enough for position we are in though

We have so little quality - whether it's Holloway or PH
That's what has killed us

Well sodomist me read the post I quoted which explains the context Hurst joined in, our form and the availability of the players who drove the few decent results Holloway eked out at the start of the season.

I couldn't be arsed.

By the way we looked a better side today when two of Hurst's signings were replaced by two of Holloway's signings.

Difference having a footballer like Spokes on the pitch getting stuck in and showing the ability to pass a ball. Could have won in the end but all too late as usual, Hurst scared to attack till we are losing as usual. At least a few of our players put up a bit of fight, but Waterfall his usual lose a player in the area giving a goal away. Coke just not up to playing twice a week, Green didn't need to come on (did he even touch the ball) and those who moaned about The Shop, he might not have had the best of games but 2 goals from 5 chances aint a bad return so far. Ira never given a pass facing the opposing goal, and laztboy Payne needs paying off now but being an ex Hurst player get the feeling he will still be here next season. Still going down but at least a bit of fight from some players.

51st minute,

Not a goal scoring opportunity but this happened.

Ball was played forward into the area, left hand side of goal and 6 yards area.

Ball wasn’t travelling fast, but Payne showed no interest to chase the ball to keep it live, or possibly make something out of it. Either that or he wasn’t fit enough to move his lazy behind backside

I was fuming as he just watched the Mansfield defender trot along under no pressure to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick.

Payne is the waste of a shirt

I thought Mansfield looked poor and that result added to other results against some of the bottom sides as well as coming up against some of the better sides who were on poor runs and our abject failure to beat those teams sums up Paul Hurst's tenure so far.

If we go down he has to go.

I commented on that to the wife, clearly not bothered.

We don't want the facts to get in the way of a good story.

Ian Holloway (a complete buffoon signed a load of excrement players) last 14 games of his tenure = 12 points

Paul Hurst (signed 11 new players) first 14 games = 8 points.

However you try to sugar coat it Hursts not changed our fortunes, the 2 best players today were Holloway signings and what makes it worse is they won't start again
Williams and Spokes showed passion and ability in that second half whilst Payne needs booting out this club, awful signing imo.
Really annoyed me how he hung Williams out to dry about missing that header yet didn't berate LJL for missing from 1 yard out last week.
Today I saw certain players giving their all but it's all too little too late.
I can even bring myself to talk about Waterfall.....

Hardly the way to go about building squad harmony is it, when one player gets such blatant and public different treatment, for what was actually a less straight-forward chance than LJL's.

Another abysmal display from town. The first half was dire and when the goal went in they got worse, no fighting spirit, just the same crap. Second half one or two good points but far too little effort too late in the game, It was Mansfield's game to win and they didn't, thank goodness.

Of the 4 substituted 3 were Hurst's men, replaced by 4 of Holloway's men. Not defending Holloway in any sense but shows how bad Hurst is when he takes his own signings off! Let's not forget that these signings were to replace the mess Hurst said he inherited.

Both Hurst and Holloway did not have a preseason so a comparison is relatively easy and both brought in their own teams, in other words both had a fresh start to the respective periods in charge.

Holloway  P14, W4, D3, L7 Goals 13 Pts 15
Hurst   P14, W1, D5, L8 Goals 8 Pts 8

Holloway's teams was very poor, the Tranmere defeat 5 - 0 was worse than bad.
Hurst was brought in to steady the ship. replace the mess caused by Holloway. He hasn't. If anything we have now gone backwards and downwards. To replace his chosen men in a game with Holloways shows just how bad Hurst's judgement was in January. His men by Hurst's own actions were not better, not the same but worse than Holloways.

This is not in way heaping any praise on Holloway but shows another bad judgement by Fenty bringing Hurst in, and how bad Hurst is. As someone posted he criticised Williams for his header today but failed to do the same to LJL in the previous 2 games. Hurst has already picked his favourites for next season and it's not based on merit.

From RH we learn from Hurst the consortium are discussing next season with him. I would love Town to stay up, if we go down then I would love Town to return in the first season. At the minute I can't see that happening with Hurst. Many have said we needed the consortium to brush away the past, it appears they're using a soft brush.

Can remember him doing the same to Amond after he missed a similar header away at Altrincham in 15/16. Then benched him in the next game home to Torquay before he came on and scored a header.

You can't compare really.  At that point the team was already on the slide and everybody at the club and the newcomers feel it.  There's more pressure. Surely, they all feel the negativity and that doesn't do wonders for confidence. Any team needs time to gel. (forming, storming, norming and performing.)  - presume you want IH back.

Interesting to hear some of the comments about Williams without a doubt he made a difference with his corner for Lenny’s goal and an excellent free kick.

The trigger for him to impact the game was when Clifton moved into midfield prior to that he did ok.

I think Spokes is a long way off being ready and the player some big him up to be but I do think he has good potential, can pick a pass and is worth sticking with & developing. When I say this I’m not being sarcastic but I could see him making a real difference in the National League.

Back to Williams, if I was to be brutal in reality it’s only took him 3/4 of the season to make an impact and as for being “Holloway’s man” under Holloway he looked like a right fanny dancer.

People find motivation in different ways. Hurst has spent the last 3 months with Williams. In that time I'm sure he's learnt how to and to not motivate him. It might seem harsh but maybe its what Williams needs. Let's be honest at times he's looked a cut above this level but unfortunately a lot more often he's looked anonymous in games.

I seem to recall the mood of this site was that the new signings would not bring negativity with them, as they were new to the club. Also they had nothing to prove from the past results as they weren't here and many believed it was hey ho up the league we go.

Not sure if you are a wind up merchant or just a bit dim but why would I want Holloway back, did you not see my comment about him Ian Holloway (a complete buffoon signed a load of excrement players)

Holloway would likely have taken us down and I was just pointing out that Hurst has not improved our points per game total to the extent that we are in a worse position than when he came.

Yes I dont like to read that. I use to see that sort of thing going on when playing football at collage. Hierarchical thing usually. If your friends with them of the pitch or they have done something in the game eg played for the county there less likely to pick on you  /in this instance Williams is younger than John Lewis and Payne  may have seen him as a weak touch and took more liberties with him.

Hope Williams has a word with Payne about it. Tell him to sort it.

Just listened to that. Comes over as a pretty snide comment but doesn't make similar comments when his love child has a glaring miss, "it was a save by the keeper or it bounced up and hit his knee".

We didn't hear the question that preceded the Williams comment and i would also give Hurst a bit of leeway in that he must have been really p1ssed off after several games where we have come close to a win but luck hasn't gone our way. He was most likely extra peeved that Barrow had once again got that rub of the green that has eluded us. How many of us make rash comments straight after a disappointing result, only to temper our comments after we have calmed down ?

I also note that those having a go at Hurst for his comments are the same posters who think Hurst should be sacked. Surprise!

I'm guilty of that but as I posted on the 'Hurst Consortium thread' Hurst is the consortiums man for the job, making whatever we may say at present superfluous. Like him or not we have to accept him. May he reign long, get us promoted and not have too many defeats.

Nope!

I couldn't care less if he was sacked tomorrow. Equally, I'm not going to throw a paddy if he is kept on for now and the coming season. Nobody knows who is and isn't going to be a success and if the consortium see him as the man they are pinning their hopes on and have a plan with him going forward, then so be it.

Someone has to make those decisions and constantly sacking managers doesn't work. We keep doing it and we keep getting worse.

I personally think he has made us a better team, but I'm sure you will point out for the hundredth time that he has taken less points than IH in the same amount of games.
