Wondering what our starting eleven will be today, very overoptimistic getting 3 points.

Pitch looks great.  We can't really laugh at them anymore though can we.

Spokes the only Holloway signing in the entire 18 man squad. A little over a month since his departure, that’s some legacy.

So that's a 5-3-2 then?

Hewitt, Menayse and Waterfall at CB with Adams and Bunney wing backs?

Surprised to see both Payne and Hanson starting. Must mean that one of them is good for the full 90 minutes.

At least its 442, I'm a little optimistic today, as we all know Hurst always struggled against tams at the wrong end of the league so hopefully now we're against a team at the other end

Hurst was often accused of being predictable or sticking with his mates but he’s shown he’s grown as a manager today.

I think that side is statement along the lines of ‘you all had a chance, hardly anyone took it so intercourse it...’

Fair play, it’s bold.

Brave decision to drop Macca, and absolutely the right call. I'm interested to see how Waterfall reacts to being named captain.

Do we think that a 442  with Adams /EL Mizouni on the wings or 433 with Adams and Payne either side of Hanson?

It’s actually even worse when you consider that there are actually another six non-Hurst (2021) players in the squad, however all of them were either signed by or made their debut under Jolley (with the exception of Macca who was of course signed by Hurst himself a decade ago).

Macca being dropped is the biggest surprise but probably the best choice for all involved right now. Macca being out of the spotlight and not under pressure means he can knuckle down in training and focus on improving his weaknesses.

Also surprised to see Hewitt as didn't think Hurst really fancied him, also heard that he'd recently had a one on one chat with Hurst and assumed that means Hurst wanted to ship him out. Maybe he said all the right things to get a chance to come in and impress. Habergham does need a rest though, can't fault the effort put in but is still struggling for full match fitness right now. Probably not far off but if he's pushed he might pick up an injury we don't need.

12 Hurst signings in a squad of 18.

And thinking about it... another 2 were signed by Hurst at previous clubs. So 14 of them have been signed by Hurst.

Thats my thinking / interpretation too.

Regards Macca, not been in good form and Podge always seems to get in his head so double the reason to drop him this week.

Great to see so many of the new players starting. Hendrie has had a downturn in form so I'm not really that surprised to see Hewitt come in. Looking forward to  seeing Eastwood and Adam's in particular.

Think Cliftons inclusion also answers some questions people raised about whether Hurst rates him. I'm glad for him. I think he will play better with better players around him. He started the season as one of our best players and degenerated as he got shunted all around the pitch.

Weird how everyone saying dropping macca is ruthless etc but it was always PH intention he said so in one of his interview about taking macca out the firing line so for me there is no surprise.  Had to be done though.

Is the commentator sat on a vibrating chair or is my link

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

The ref actually did it red card, didn't think he'd do it

Can't tackle like that anymore.

Also, I really liked how a few of our players were straight to the ref. It's not pleasant, I hate it when other sides do it, but needs must (and Newport are very good at it, so fuck 'em)

I think he may be still be using a 1930’s rule book.

Was just going to post that I'm a bit disappointed with him.
Every cross he's tried to sling in have gone nowhere and has given it away when defending.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I’ve quite enjoyed the commentary -
Old school but preferable to the Shiite served up nowadays.
Not fully convinced by the red but certainly not complaining.
I’ve been impressed with town but need to make it count

Unrecognisable from the Town sides we’ve seen all season, application, purpose and some desire.

Good to see, let’s just keep a clean sheet and see what happens.

Have to give credit where it’s due and we look head and shoulders better.

Granted there’s another half but on that performance it’s impossible not to be impressed.

Holloway had months to scout players and brought in Sunday league, hursts had a month and already brought players that are significantly better.

We seem to have an idea of what we’re trying to do. Granted the new lads have looked a bit edgy or tentative at times but Adam’s is clearly a class above, Matete is once again classy and even Hanson has looked much improved...

Best we’ve played for a long time that. Unlucky not to be ahead, strangely the sending off stunted our momentum.

New signings been very good. Payne has been a right handful and bought the red by turning quickly.
We’ve bossed it in the midfield and won everything.

Just need the goals!!!!!

Just don't want to concede against the run of play now. Been pressing and creating chances, if we keep doing that then eventually a chance will fall in the right place. Good to see players looking keen and wanting the ball even in some very poor pitch conditions.

Good half that , dominant , worked the keeper a couple of times....pitch making it difficult but they have shown very little to trouble us so far.

Noticeable differences ,

Surrounding the ref for the first time this season = red card for Newport.  Dont particularly like to see it but just about every other team has done it against us so an eye for an eye i say.

Eastwood ...an over the top ball almost identical to last weeks....he comes and volleys it away on the edge of his box. You can hear him calling keepers on the commentary and quick to distribute to the full backs.

Town much better than I dared to expect, completely bossed the whole half. Let's hope we can get the win.

Well - after the first half there is only one thing to say: This looks much better than for a long time. I feel more secure of the defensive part and we have "troubled" (sort of..) their keeper with several balls going towards him. This is very refreshing to see and on a better pitch with more playing time together I feel oddly optimistic of our chances of getting out of the relegation zone.
Now for the hard part - as we all know it isn`t always easy playing against 10 men. Crossing fingers here for a positive result and a point or three today.

Bit in bold is probably because when Hurst wasn't working he was keeping up to date with things when Holloway wasn't working he was in the media talking about Holloway.

A strong performance so far but we need to get 3 points from here. Think we’ve had enough about us to indicate we’ll get a few good chances.

Let's just hope the ref doesn't feel the need to even it up second-half if we make a strong challenge.

Man Utd didn't seem to have much trouble against 10 men in the week! Lets hope we can do the same. Would be a massive result if Barrow and Stevenage lose

Much better, difference a month makes, we've been out olaying them, our passing has been good, our crosses not so good, I'll blame that on two making the most crosses are the two new guys on a excrement pitch so its forgiven this game.

Matete looking a class above, calm and composed moving the ball well.

Payne is a pain for them (see what I did there   I await the red crosses) looking strong, getting in the right areas and SHOOTING! I'd forgotten a striker was allowed to do that.

Eastwood looks good so far, confident and commanding. I think he's a little too eager at times to throw it out to Bunney and puts him under pressue a couple times.

Looking forward to the 2nd half, can't remember the last time I said that.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Looking at the table a win would put us in a better position. Barrow losing so far, and we are one of their games in hand. Starting to look good .

Certainly an encouraging 1st half.

Been to he better team. Look a bit more threatening going forward.

Matete plays like he's got an old head on his shoulders. Adams has caught the eye. Payne has a presence about him..

Need to take advantage of this today and go for the 3 PTS.

After the final whistle last week I felt really down. Despite a better performance I feared we were nailed on to go down.

We're still in the mire this virtually new team has given me a degree of optimism.

Looking good so far.  Bit disjointed but thats to be expected with the number of new players.  Once they do gel we look to have a good side that should climb the table

It'd be good if we'd actually take advantage of some early dominance for once cos this literally always happen when we have loads of possession but don't convert it into goals.

10 and they have been by far the better team the second half

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Not from where I was sitting.

Thought we played well up to that point without really looking too dangerous.

Newport have looked crap, my main worry is that Bunney looks dodgy and it was a crap back pass from him that led to the goal.

I don't thinking he was picking on him, just an observation that I agree with, it wasn't his first dodgy pack pass in this game on a pitch you should really try to avoid.

Smash and fookin grab. 54 year old Maynard doing what he always does. Half time couldn't have done sooner for them and we didn't want it to end.

We need to score 3 to win  this, as Podge will be wheeled on to score his obligatory goal

Just need the boys to get the heads up and start bossing it like the first half. The performance is light years ahead of Holloway's dross. Hopefully Stefan can cause Max Payne to this poor industrial Newport side.

Agree mate
Need to freshen it up now I think

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Oh noes, we go back into non league and you'll all have to argue with one random geordie trying to reason with you outside of Gateshead's ground and stand in the mud by a pissy wall in the middle of nowhere. Nothing will change either way, you'll still be on the bus with your bus mates going to every tiny middle of nowhere village to watch us play with a season ticket for home games.

Maybe if Hurst makes more subs before 89 minutes we might still draw this game.

I bet Holkoway is jacking off.  LJL got a good cross in there.   Why is clifton playing sideways pass when there was acres of space in front of him?

We've had more fookin shots on target in this game than the rest of.the season combined.... still no goal though, and that's the only stat that matters.

This defeat is a hard one to take. Should've made hay whilst the sun was shining.  Hurst needs to get a ruthless streak in the team. Win ugly do whatever it takes.

One clear cut chance in the game, they got it, they took it. Simples.

There are positives however hard to find but the simple fact is it’s too late...the damage was done before a ball was kicked and we’ve paid the price ever since...

Fuckin excrement
Outplayed by 10 men in the second half.

Good signs in the first half but no goal to show for the 65% possession
Like I say excrement in the end.
No change im afraid, still will be relegated

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Gutted!!! After such a good first half, we panicked and gave them something to hang on to.

If ever there was a pitch for 10 men to hold on it was that one, couldn’t move the ball quickly and we were wasteful from wide positions.

Didn’t expect to get anything today but gutted we didn’t now.

One of those odd games when a sending off had the negative affect of halting our momentum. Either way, we're so clueless in the opposition's final third it's painful. Fine getting it into the final 3rd then...nothing.

Highly frustrating and another deflated Saturday afternoon.

Same as last week, thats why we are going down, We think our luck is in, player sent off, but of course oppo score a goal 5 yards offside and its given.
Why wait till 80 mins to add LJL should have been on 10 mins earlier.

Certainly didnt expect anything out of today.....but after a dominant 45 and having a man extra we should have taken something if not all 3 points....absolutley fast asleep first 10-15 of second half....then absolutely pedestrian with it once Newport took the lead.

New players tired badly and we looked clueless second half.

We stopped running at them.  Went back to trying to work space for the perfect shot.  The pitch was a quagmire. Get it in low or run at them and they will make a mistake. So frustrating but if we can play like we did in the first 45 and sustain it, (while putting the crosses away) we should get out of this.

We will not win until the curse of fenty  has gone.

So let's hope the deal is completed soon or we will be running out of games to win.

They have won 2 games in the last 11, both against us.

Never a better chance for three points and we blow it yet again. How hard is it to put together 11 players that can win a game of football every now and again?

The only thing this club is any good at is long winless runs. How many of 10 games or more have we had over the seasons? I've lost count.

Say what you like about improvement, the fact is we’re still shite going forward and hopeless at the back.

Think the red card was the worst thing to happen to the game. Utter shite in the second half after a promising first, we had no idea how to break them down.

I know everybody on here will be understandably annoyed with that second half but we couldn't half do with a wee slice of luck!

We haven't had any luck all season. They shoot gets a deflection to their players. We shoot gets a deflection straight to the opposition. What ever oloway said to Lady Luck she hasn't shone on us all season.

My frustrations where the amount of sideways passing 10 minutes from the end when we're 1-0 down. Add to that still 4 at the back when we have 5 mins of injury time, we should have stuck Waterfall up front.

We where better overall at least they looked bothered and worked hard, will we have enough? Not sure but I can't see us down with a whimper at least.

I know our pitch is really poor this season but surely Newport should be made to do something with theirs? Season after season it's a disgrace, maybe the answer is to allow 5G pitches in L2.

i know we lost, but i must admit that we played the best we have all season. I saw purpose in the game, and considering the new lads havent had much time to gel, we showed promise. That end ball is still eluding us, and no clear chances, but for once i enjoyed the game. 74% of the action shows we are improving, and we just need the breaks. A few too many passes still, but with them going down to 10 men, they closed the doors on us, fair play to them. You cant say there was no passion, the lads played well, and showed desire. We deserved something from the game, but that last ball never materialised, too many high crosses for their keeper to collect. Its going to be down to the wire, but there is hope from what ive witnessed today. No need to be negative lads, yes we lost again, but there is improvement today.

Whilst some players may be better quality than what we had, sadly it was the same old story, concede to a defensive error and fail to score, so no improvement on that.

No need to be so negative as the improvements were clear to see. If it had stayed 11v11 it would have suited us much better as they sneaked a goal and then shut up shop. I know we’re running out of games but at least we have clear improvement so therefore some chance.

Hollow heads voodoo Mrs at play giving us a curse haha.  We can do it from from what I've heard first 45mins if we scored during that I think we win.  Just got to keep believing.

Nah we played better against Cheltenham and Leyton Orient - games where we actually managed to muster something resembling a goalscoring threat. Knocking a ball around on the edge of the area when the opposition is content to sit deep and defend with 10 men isn't something to get excited about.

Second week in a row that we deserved something. Trouble is we’re running out of weeks.

Disagree. We played well for 45 mins...managed a couple of attempts on goal in that time.  Then faded badly against 10 men , hardly troubled their goal second half, 1 chance for Payne smothered, other than that we looked very poor against the 10 man wall, clueless as to how to break it down.

Last week, similar , looked better but hardly registered a decent shot/ chance.

One thing for sure , last week we restricted the opposition to minimal chances but they took both, this week they had maybe two chances and took one...we just dont take the minimal chances we create.

It’s not down to luck but it helps to have some. Newport didn’t create the goal just a deflected shot that drops nicely for their forward and other than Clifton’s slip they’ve not had another shot on target. In truth whilst we looked much better organised we have a lack of pace down the middle up front, failed to deliver quality crosses from very promising positions and lack a bit of creativity and composure when going forward.

Just can’t see us scoring too often but that was a terrible surface to play any football on the ground so let’s hope a slightly better surface at BP next week sees us getting 3 points.

90 mins of 2 strikers stood in the penalty box waiting for a cross and we fanny about passing sideways in bloody midfield.

You have 2 (and eventually 3) strikers all aerial threats and both full backs and both wingers gave them 2 half decent crosses in 95 mins

Sometimes is better to be absolutely shìte like against Scunny, or lose in farcical circumstances like last week because the anger marks the pain. I’m so, so down after that, worse than at any time in 09/10, could easily lash myself in the Humber.

Good first half then they had a player sent. They changed it, scored, and we couldn’t. Why could we not change our system to play against 10? Like for like in our subs and it made no difference. Disappointed 😞

They did "create" the goal by gambling & getting it into the area
Did we do anything similar,ie send some balls into the area etc?
Once again excuses about the surface but it's the same for both sides.

One of the reasons I wasn't a massive fan of Hurst was that he's never been the best at finding a way to break down teams that retreat to their 18 yard box. He doesn't do anything different but change like for like. Doesn't take a risk with throwing a defender forward, going three at the back, throwing on an extra striker, anything to break the rhythm of the opposition.

Having said all that, I think we are fooking cursed and I am in no way superstitious.

It's results based and we haven't had any. As good as possession is it's goals that count and we hardly get any. People will look back at this season and say they lost. They won't say their play improved or they looked good at times, nope just lost.

They won't blame oloway or Fenty just say they they lost and didn't score.

On a positive note I did see some green shoots, but mid field creativity has not improved nor has running of the ball or finding channels. Doesn't matter who is in mid field they just pass sideways most of the time.

I saw effort, determination, enthusiasm and guts. The new keeper did ok and I think the team will come good.
3 points against Tranmere and we're up and running.

Never made an excuse for losing about the surface just saying it made it difficult to play any football on the ground is that hard to understand? Also very difficult to move the ball through the middle or beat a guy as ball bobbles all over. As for creating chances you should know what I mean and we did have a number of shots from outside the box unfortunately they were all crap ones that missed the target. We actually crossed the ball on a number of occasions but again 95% of them were again crap.

Next 2 games against top 6 teams. We weren't outplayed by them another top six side today though. But chances are we will lose more ground.

I'm optimistic but it's not looking good. So what do know about that mess called the NL?

Ah we’re stuffed - it’s not Hurst’s fault, the reality is that to get to 50 points we’ve got average 1.5 pts per game for the rest of the season. That’s the equivalent of a 70 point season. Can you see this team getting 70 points - 55-60 yes but not 70. Too few games to many missed opportunities.

Golden opportunity today. Newport in dreadful form, reduced to 10 men before half time.  Should have been a nailed on 3 points.

Can't tell you how disappointed I am.

This time last week I was convinced we were going down.

This result makes our task harder than it was last week.

Yes. we have some better players now, but they need to win at least 9 of the remaining 19 games.  I just don't see us staying up.

The games are ticking away and all I can see is John Fenty running off into the sun set with a briefcase filled with £2million and sticking the middle finger up to us dropping out of the league. Fenty I never really had a problem with you over the years but you really are a first class b#llend!! He has ruined the club I love for a second time.....I don't know how just dropping down one league makes me feel so much dread and shame

February always going to be tough.
Newport are 3rd we are 23rd.

We lost 1-0 away get over it.
Signs of improvement and 19 games to go.

I keep seeing people saying we are showing signs of improvement
WHERE?
We are still second from bottom steadily getting cut adrift.
We can't score
We can't keep teams scoring against us.
We are desperate for points and we still can't get any so like I say where have we improved??

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I sometimes (actually, quite often ) think is Fenty actually a fan?

His supporters say he is but realistically all he has ever done is the bare minimum for our survival ( and I don't mean that topless ice bucket challenge )

Sure without his initial "investment" we might have faced admin but we're going back almost 20 years now and no visible progress whatsoever.

All I can hope for is that the new consortium think that it's not just about ownership and personal publicity but will actually seek to invest in the club, to take us forward and not just settle for mediocrity

Hopefully we will still be a league club by the time they get in place to influence our future...time's not on our side though, so our renaissance might have to start from the National League

What a legacy that will be for the regime that's been in charge for most of this century...

Fair enough, but Holloway wasn’t sacked, he left us. Who would YOU have given the job to?

You’ve been negative since Hurst’s appointment.

Agreed, data only shows so much. It doesn’t take into account the fact that PH inherited an appalling situation and team sinking quicker than the titanic only a few games ago. He’s managed to bring some players (which was no easy task given where we are) and he now needs patience and our support.

It’s sniping from the same individuals who never wanted him back in the first place. The vast majority of level headed fans can see the improvements so far and will continue to get behind Paul and the team and support them in trying to do all they can to rescue a dire situation.

Everyone knows what Holloway has done to this club and how hard it would be for whoever followed that idiot.
I'm not getting at PH and I don't think others are.
Its just people saying we have improved, we haven't.
Today was an example
How many points did we get?
How many goals did we score?
How many goal scoring chances did we make?
PH has my support and if we do get relegated im not going to blame him.
But ffs stop saying we are any better than we have been all this season.

Stats mean f@ck all right now, we played better football with a team that's been cobbled together in 5 days!...that performance was better than the sh!te Holloway dished up..yes we lost, but I have confidence this "new" team has every chance if survival..

I would argue that we have improved. Does anyone dispute that we have better players than we did under Runaway? We’re better in the sense that we’re actually stringing some passes together and getting into attacking areas albeit there is still room for improvement.

Defensively we have also improved albeit individual lapses have cost us goals in recent weeks. We’re starting to look like a coherent team which wasn’t the case under Holloway.

Of course there’s some who wallow in negativity. By the same token, there are some who see things through black and white specs. In between, reality is we’re in the excrement and we need a seismic change in fortune or the National League to come riding to the rescue.

Just to make things worse it is going to snow for a few days.

That means less time on the training pitch.

The new lads need time to settle in and get to know each other.

I  don't think today anybody played badly nor do I think anybody played brilliantly and considering the short time that they have had together I was quite pleased with the performance. This team will come good in time to avoid relegation

I didn’t think Bunney was as bad as people say, yes it was clear he hasn’t played full time for a while but he looked to get forward and could be a good asset when fully fit

We need to get real.

Yes, we have new players, and they are an improvement on the Hollow Words squad.

But it is clear that not all of them are fully match fit. And the fact is that time is against us. Te teams around us have games in hand, and most of them have far superior goal difference and more points.

We are in a deep hole. A good 45 minutes is a good sign, but we have to start winning. And we have tough fixtures coming up, at the end of which we could, in four weeks time, be well adrift of safety.

The sad truth is that even with new players we lost a crucial six pointer last week, against a team without an away win in a year, which may well end up being the difference between us and Stevenage at the end of the season.

Today with a few more new players we threw away an absolutely golden opportunity to chalk up a win. We are the only team Newport have beaten in their last 11 games. And they were down to 10 men after 37 minutes. And we STILL lost.

In the last week there were 6 points there on a plate for us. If we go down it will be these 6 six points that probably cost us our league status. For me this is the week that I lost hope. I think we have had it.
