Town: McKeown, Hendrie, Pollock, Waterfall, Habergham, Hewitt, Spokes, Wright, Williams, Preston, Green.

Subs: Russell, Starbuck, Scannell, Bennett, Gibson, Jackson Jr, Hanson.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Great to see Hanson on the bench though.

If your still on the fishy 'Wembley', your 100% signing of Billy Chadwick is on the bench for Hull today, may your account rest in peace.

No Morais or Rose?

Bennett on the Bench but William starts?

Preston and the new full back both starting?

I don't get it.

I guess 4-4-1-1 with one of Habergham and Preston left wing. Looks to me like we'll set up to try to be very solid and he's then got attacking options on the bench. Bit depressing at home to the team bottom of the league but we have to stop giving away so many early goals.

No Morais or Rose even on the bench. Injuries presumably?

4-5-1 by the looks of it

Get the feeling Hurst doesn't trust Gibson in such a big game?
Spokes is back!!
Scannell and Hanson to make a big impact, I can feel it!

Let's have it!

Hendrie.  Waterfall. Pollock Habergham Preston

That's how I'm seeing it, Green has to score today, if not he has to be binned.

Let's hope Scannell and Hanson can do 45 minutes.

if we can hold it to 0-0 at half time, bring them on for Green and Williams and we may have a chance.

Looks like 5 on midfield Green up top on his own

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Probably because weve only got enough defenders for one of the teams in an 11v11. So if he's on the "A" team (*awaits A-Team punchline replies ) then he's quids in isn't he.

I think a Preston Habergham left side could work , Preston can but a decent ball in and definately grafts up and down , he was hopelessly exposed at left back and never had a natural left footed partner on that side. That side has caused most of our defensive issues this season so with two defensive ish, natural left sided players hopefully that will see a big improvement.

It looks negative, but we’re never going to win games if we keep conceding 2 or 3 goals. Should be a team that’s more solid defensively, and hopefully we can nick a goal at the other end.

The key to this line up is to avoid conceding and then give some of the forwards on the bench a pop with 20 to go.  Sadly we aren’t very good at the first bit. Very happy with a point today

With most of our attacking potential sitting on the bench, I'd say PH is looking to keep it tight for an hour or so, then unleash the subs.

Stranger things have happened...

I like look of that
And Hanson/Scannell need to be eased back
I hope Spokes plays well - there's something there I feel
Preston higher up pitch is interesting - very good crosser of ball

Main thing - total priority - is solid at back; no team ever had any success if they were crap at the back

Come on Town

Pitch looks worse than ploggers...at the risk of sounding like a stuck record but furloughing the groundsman has to be one of the worst decisions ever...

Launch it down the middle to green again - why are people suprised

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Its taken nearly 10 minutes to complete a pass in their half

Can't keep putting  Preston in the side.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

They just look better footballers , we have hardly anyone who looks like they can carry or control a ball comfortably , Wright so far has shown promise but Williams, Spokes, Hewitt look incapable of anything other than fouling.

Bright start by Southend but we've grown into the game.

The attacking options we have on the bench give me hope of nicking all three points second half.

Hurst has obviously decided to shut the door first.   He's managed 45 without conceding so that's the first step.  I feel the team now need to take some risks.

Williams, Spokes, Preston and Hewitt have been utter garbage. Shame about Spokes as he had a very good game before his injury, the pitch clearly doesn’t help him.

Dare I say Green has been better this week, that said it’s very easy to be better than he has been this season.

That'll do we can bring on the heavy fire-power in the second half. First substitution around the 60-minute mark (Hanson) then Jackson around 75.

It's roughly going to plan!

For once we have some options on the bench.

Hurst wont risk Hanson for too long, maybe give him 20 minutes?

Sounds like we could do with Bennett replacing Williams though.

Plenty of effort, just unfortunately we are crap, they are slightly less crap and the Southend wingers look decent. I'm not sure we are fouling that much as soon as we go near them they fall over and the ref who  is shite gives a free kick. Can't see us scoring though.

we really need a whole new centre midfield - urgently. Preston is one of the worst players I've ever seen play for us. Williams is offering next to nothing, get Scannel on.

JT has decided that he likes Habergham and talks him up on little evidence. No better on throws than Preston.

Similarly, he max's out on a Spokes error. Just shut up about the pitch and get the names right.

Poor by Williams and Hewitt deserved a card.

If we’re being kind you’d say that Green has looked half decent in comparison to previous weeks. Defensively we look a little better and we’ve gone 45 minutes without conceding...

If we’re being honest, it’s just not very good. Neither keeper had a save to make and a quagmire of a pitch ruining what was never gonna be a classic anyway.

If you’re being brutal it’s flipping terrible. We look abject at times and too many players just have a kit on whilst the game passes them by...

Defended well against a team that look better than us.  Hopefully we will be able to nick something if we can get a 30 minutes out of Hanson and scanell. I’d like to see Gibson on for Williams.

We look hugely weakened missing Rose, Clifton and Morais from the squad.

Wasn’t expecting anything else than a slog today, but it’s 0-0 at halftime and we have good options off the bench. At least their best guy will be playing in the bog in the second half, and Wright will have grass.

The fact we look weakened missing those three tells its own story...

Morais has been decent and is decent but the other two...average at best.

Missing Clifton and rose...dear me...

I dont wanna sound negative but this is just trash isn't it? I trust in Hurst to sort what he can out but my god this is just horrendous to watch.

It is mate, was going to post pretty much the same. Awful. Hardly seen their goal area , hardly put two passes together. However as bad as it is it looks to me like there is a very clear back to basics approach of nothing fancy , get the ball up the pitch.
The further away from our goal it is the less likely we are to concede.

Williams brings absolutely zero to the game, Spokes and Hewitt just lift the ball forward.

Spokes, Hewitt, Williams doing nothing going forward.
Hewitt holding it together a bit Infront of the back four.
Preston is a waste of a shirt

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

If my memory of Hurst serves me right he’s not the type of manager to risk going for it

We've got the second worst goals against in the division, unless we resolve that we haven't got any chance of staying up, so PH is quite right imho to concentrate on getting us solid defensively as the top priority. If we "go for it" then recent history would suggest we'll end up conceding. Some of the suggested line-ups on here pre-game were laughable given the situation/form we are in. I'd take 0-0 today, as it at least gives a base to work from whilst we await reinforcements.

We are down the bottom for a reason we all know, can we give the slagging off of our players a rest.  We've heard it all repeatedly , there will be changes /incoming  ,Hurst knows the problems we have and will act.  Please give the boys a break from continual  moaning.      It's our team. UTM.

Green scored against Liverpool when playing for Mansfield. Amazing.

If they have players who can run with the ball, won't the boggy pitch ehaust and slow them down now?  Or they get subbed for lesser-players.

Southend players trying to ref the game.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

So do people on here to be honest utter negativity

To be fair you have also been 100% negative in this thread. Just  give some examples positive things people can say about the match.

Why do many other teams try to ref the game, and complain at every decision?  Not to mention falling over, being cynical and wasting time.

Rightly or wrongly, we seldom do these things.  Ok, we don't waste time as we are never defending a lead.  Apart from misplaced passes.

I'll tell you what, we're lucky they're equally as inept as us when it comes to sticking the ball in the back of the net. Any half decent side will punish you from set pieces when you give away TWENTY TWO fouls in a match.

Glad to see us keep a clean sheet but wow we're absolutely atrocious in midfield and up front. Just no ability there at all.

Well that was a steaming pile of sh1te !

0-0 at home to the only team below us with 2 shots on target in 90 minutes is just unacceptable !

I keep thinking we have reached rock bottom but this team always manages to slip a little bit lower every week.

What worries me more is that there are people on here who will be "happy with a point" FFS !

Never mind, at least we will have lots of large followings next year when we can be Billy Big balderdash in the National League.

That McCormack is an absolute shithouse.
Pathetic and over the top to everything and the ref was weak as pisss as he kept accepting being hounded even after booking 2 of them.
An absolutely horrendous game but stops the rot and I’ll take the point happily.

My god we’re bad going forward.

A much better defensive performance and something to build on, we were set up to not lose today and I can’t say I’m too fussed with that at the minute.

Hurst simply has to get a striker in, Greens best game in months and he was still miles off scoring. Jackson looked Sunday league at best when he came on.

Onto Scunny, another one we simply cannot lose.

I'm happy with a point. They may be bottom but are in great form at the moment; much better than us and they looked no better than we did. There are plenty of terrible teams this season and we don't have to improve by much to start picking up. We only need to finish 22nd and we kept them bottom. Denying them 3 points was as important as winning 1 point.

The two worst teams in the football league play out an awful 0-0.

Hurst took out the two players who have a bit of calmness on the ball but are prone to defensive lapses, replaced them with two players who  just spoiled play and we kept a clean sheet.

It was a god awful watch that luckily we cant get in to watch right now.

Certainly couldnt afford to lose it so despite needing a good  dose of eye bleach i will reluctantly take a point on recent form.

How about we stop looking at it as a 0-0 draw against the only team below us and look at it as our first clean sheet in a flipping age against the most in form side in the division? It's something to build on and i'm sure PH is happy with the defensive side on it. You can't win games if you concede goals at the rate we do and the fact he's managed to get us one after two weeks on the training ground with them is credit to him. He knows how poor going forward we are, he says in his interviews he's looking for a forward and a wide player. Clifton and Hewitt have to start together for me next week as Spokes offered intercourse all today and we need energy in that midfield, Hanson didn't lose a header when he came on and Morais in for Preston. 3 changes and I think we have an okay starting line up but we desperately need signings.

We didn't concede
Macca seems to his confidence back
We have a point and Southend are still below us.
The positives

11 man defence at times
Did look comfortable in any part of the pitch
Pitch what pitch another Fenty legacy
The negatives

Lets hope Hursty has stopped the rot. It was ugly and awful but they had to start from nothing so lets hope that we have witnessed small shoots optimism

We can look at the positives.

Macca looked more confident and decisive - albeit not much to deal with.
Wright, Scannell and Hanson are back.
Morais wasn't even playing.
Some grit showing.

We need someone to control the centre circle.

Only surprise was a clean sheet. Hurst had to start at least 4 players in Williams, Preston, Green & Spokes who aren’t up to it, that shows the challenge he faces.

We need re-enforcements quickly and they’ll need to add quality as well as the character required for what is a relegation dig fight.

Things could feel very different if we swop places in the league with the Scunts next Saturday though.

Still 22 blokes chasing a ball around a muddy field. Wright the only one to create anything, Pitch and team is embarrasing 2 shots all game against the bottom team. Only positive we didnt lose.

We wasted our games in hand and now have played two more than some at the bottom. Three points were crucial today but one shot on target is terrible. Plus 23 fouls!

If we go down then we won't be Billy Big in the Conference unless they clear out most of the players we now have and get some proper players in.

It's all coming home now. I feel stupid that I was taken in by Holloway. What a mess he has left and he has walked away whistling a happy tune. If I were him I would feel as guilty as hell.

And when is the takeover going to be officially completed?

positives today for sure.
0-0
Mins for Wright, Hanson, Scannell, Habergam
Missed Morais.
Spokes is a youngster making a big step up and has barely played so too early to be judging him as some are
Keep the faith guys, plenty of time to go and the transfer window is open.

We know we need 6-7 new players to keep ourselves up, something Hurst has admitted. Until they come in, we take every point we can get. It was pretty, but it keeps us from bottom and within four points of four different teams.

So where's he snowed in this day and age. You have a job to do and the weathers forecast is bad, you travel the day before and stay local. Snow is not an excuse, it just sounds good. He's half decent if he turns up.

It is difficult to comprehend how we have been allowed to get as bad as that, including the pitch.

All for thinking the season would be stopped early. A leaving present from JF.

No, just seeing things as they are at the moment. Southend are 4th in the form guide: we are bottom of it.

Stop the rot, then start to build from there.

The Hull student murder trial has been postponed for the past two days because jurors can't get to court because of the weather  - they are probably more local to the court in Sheffield than Morais is to GY

If we can bring in four or five proper footballers then we should be able to go on a decent run. We need them soon though.

Having said that, with Hanson, Wright, Scannell and Morais available for selection next week we probably have a good chance of beating the Scunts even without new arrivals. I'd rather we didn't have to though.

My daughter lives in Sheffield on an icy ungritted road high above Hillsborough. Got across to work near Worksop for last two days having scraped ice and snow off her old car. Shame on the jurors if true.

I was never a massive fan of Hurst in our Non League days but he somehow got us promoted, but to be honest right now i feel sorry for the guy, having to try and
create some sort of a side out of the lack of talent Billy Liar brought in. Its Ok  being able to kick a ball, head a ball, and do keepy uppys , but if you haven't got a footballing brain your'e a waste of space.
If we get relegated, which is a real possibility, I for one will not blame Hurst.

I can't see that it is a wind up....

The trial has been adjourned for a second day on Friday as a juror is unable to get to court due to the weather.

Justice Lambert told the jury: “It is nearly impossible to get one of your number to court today.

“The car cannot get up to the house to get her. We have thought of different ways to get her safely here but has proved to be futile.

“Can we keep our fingers crossed it will thaw over the weekend and can I see you all on Monday morning at 10.30am.”

The case will resume on Monday.

Crawley would have been a long drive for the home games on a Saturday. In this day and age weather is not an excuse, he could leave early, doesn't have to drive fast, just take you time and get to do your job. M161, M62, M18, M180 would all be cleared and salted.

How many people working in other occupations could use snow as an excuse. Emergency workers, hospital staff, lorry drivers delivering food. Come on ginny get real

Hurst post match, Morais is injured.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

I live in Knaresborough, about 4 or 5 miles out of Harrogate and I could have got to Grimsby this morning. We've not had snow since Thursday. If he lives out of Harrogate it gets high pretty quickly to the North and West and we had rain this morning that could have been snow up there. If he lives in Harrogate I'd be very disappointed if his absence was due to him not being able to get to Grimsby.

And from Hurst's interview obviously that wasn't the reason.

Whilst not decrying the need for pace at the back and a decent striker I think our priority is two decent central midfield players, control midfield control the game. Out wide if they now stay fit we have Morais, Wright & Scannell who are all decent at this level.

I would like to see Hanson and Gibson up top to see if there is something that could lead to some chemistry and goals and they might be our Toshack & Keegan, but that’s probably being too optimistic.

Bit surprised by a few of Hursts early selections I.e. leaving Bennett out today, persisting with Green but without a reserve’s game he’s probably trying to judge different players whilst trying to get wins, not easy.

Although we could do with six players in if our mostly missing players, Hanson, Wright and Scannell can stay fit we might get away with four but I would reiterate two of these to be first choice midfield players, new striker and an additional pacey centre back.

We live in hope 😀😀

Hewitt battles and brings some physicality but we looked so limited in there with him and Spokes together. On the basis of that a centre mid is every bit as important as a striker.

I think the problem with Bennett and Scannell is they give us quality going forwards but make us more vulnerable at the back if they're playing wide in a 4-4-2 because they don't help their full back. With the players we have it is very hard to put a team out that offers a threat going forwards but doesn't look very vulnerable at the back. Guess he could have brought Bennett on for Williams but assume he was hoping we'd get more ball into Hanson and Jackson might poach a goal.

Sounds like Macca was steady
Defence steady

Midfield struggled but no lack of effort
Wingers once fit could be ok

Hanson played....whoopee.

If our players who haven’t been fit can play next Saturday I’m really hopeful we can take all 3 points from Scunny.

Few players today making first starts for a while which doesn't help. Morais and Rose would have played had they been fit, and hopefully both will be back for next week, with a couple of new players thrown into the mix.

If you look at Barrow 5 games ago, they had 13 points and had won 2 all season. They now have 23 points, and have won 3 and drawn 1 of their last 5. Southend and Stevenage have also had upturns in the last 5 or 6 games and have climbed the form table. Mansfield have picked up massively as well once their new manager got to grips with things.  I'm sure we will have a more productive run soon, just as others have.

Couldn't agree more I'm sure Hursty will do the trick. Today wasn't brilliant but at least a point and clean sheet.

Exactly this, i've been saying this all season, the division this year is absolutely terrible. The only team I was genuinely impressed with was Tranmere and that was us gifting them the game.
