Looks like Macca has fallen out of favour with Ollie, sounded like he had a dig at him in the pre-match interview.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

I would say it’s a reminder that no one is safe from being dropped, or worse.

Your guess is as good as anyone's Pete

Just listening to RH and JT is saying Sam Russell is more able to play the ball out from the back than Macca....

Just seems a strange move but I'm not the manager and only he knows the score.... hopefully not a cricket one!

They've already started but not much point in tuning in yet since they just pump loads of adverts before it starts.

Maccas distribution on Saturday was awful. Every long ball went out of play or straight to them with nobody close enough to challenge.

Russell got one game last season then dropped, maybe same again...

It's not a line-up that jumps out at you as being capable of being the team currently top of the league, is it? Strange things do happen with Town, but I don't fancy us at all tonight. Happy to be proved wrong.

A sad sight to see Macca dropped for our 38 year old goalkeeping coach. If he leaves in Jan (and I can't imagine he'll be easy to shift on current form and his wages), it would be a real shame just a few months short of his 10 years at the club - not many players do that these days.

Whatever happens, his performances haven't been good enough this season but it shouldn't be forgotten what a great servant he's been to this club. And again, there aren't many players you can say that about over the past couple of decades.

It’s streaming now albeit with various adverts but as I type I’m watching both teams warming up. If you’re not on yet then a bit of advice, use Google Chrome because that’s what I was advised when I first started streaming our games. I was having problems at the time but since I’ve used Google Chrome all has been well. Best of luck.

thanks, it actaully seems to be working, which is a minor miracle in itself, given the ifollow problems and my neanderthal approach to all things technical!

Holloway showing that he means action imho. it might be just a temporary kick up the arris to get him re focused, but ive thought for a couple of months now that i could easily see us getting a new keeper in January; if he were to go a) would we miss him that much onfield and b) it would free up a good amount of money to be spent on new players

Yeh, I’d imagine this could be a one time thing...

Thing is though, surely you’d just take Macca to one side in training and do some work with him? You don’t need to be a goalkeeping coach to teach someone to kick it really far...

As a shot stopper macca is one of best you will get at this level. His weakness for me is he doesn’t command his box enough and makes a few errors which are usually negligible due to amount of point winning saves he makes throughout season.

Under holloway his errors have become more prevalent due to this ‘play out from back’ ethos that the manager is trying to instil in team. Macca stated he struggles with it but the question should be can the club afford / attract as good a shot stopper as macca who can also play out to the standard required.. I don’t think we can , it’s pretty obvious we pay peanuts and I would rather keep macca and ditch the play from the back.

Back in the day, Danny Coyne’s distribution was shocking for the level we were out (albeit we were a lot more adept at playing out from the back in those days).

I seem to remember that we brought in a specialist rugby kicking coach who had worked with the England team, and it improved no end.

Anyone elses audio excrement on ifollow?

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Well seeing as his kicking hasn't improved over the nearly ten years he has been with us, constantly being coached in the process, then I don't think having a quiet word will make much difference. I have consistently maintained that Macca was good at non-league level and ok for a lower level league 2 team but we need better if we aspire to achieving and maintaining league 1 status.

Bennet not tracking back AGAIN

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

We haven't got the players to play it out from the back Ollie and we haven't got the money to buy them.

Never thought I'd miss the long ball to Monkhouse.

Not good enough from whoever it was in the wall. They should be taking a ball to the face to stop it going in, not half arsing their attempted block and deflecting it into their own net.

We simply do not look like a well coached or drilled team.

Ok Newport are top but we look so over the place. Basics of shape tracking back etc simply not there.

And no drive or incisive play going forward.

It's a relegation team this.

I know Newport are top but we are flipping really really bad.
Ollie needs to find a way to at least make us hard to beat.
We are playing the Ollie way and it's just not working.

I understand Newport are top, that they have front men that can actually finish but my god we are awful.

We’ve adjusted our shape and now look even more off kilter.

The goal took a deflection but the wall was all over the shop. We’ve got some serious problems, which I know are covids fault but dear me...

Just look like a relegation side. Barely any player doing their job. We’re just a easy three points for anyone decent. Look at Newport’s bench, we would have most of them in our starting lineup.

I know we’ve said it many times but just what are we hoping to achieve by playing out from the back.

We never make it to the half way line before we concede possession. Might just as well let the keeper get it up over the half way line if we’re going to give the ball away

Oh for a Monkhouse head as a target before we let the opposition take control. At least that’s half way into their half before we lose the ball

None of these players dare to even attempt an incisive pass. We've just gone from having the ball on the edge of their box, played countless sideways passes when the option was available at times to knock it through a gap or into the feet of a player further forward, and ended up aimlessly lumping it forward from our own half and losing possession. It's cowardly play and screams a lack of confidence amongst the entire squad.

The concept of playing it out is fine as it draws the opponent onto you and in theory creates space further up the pitch. Sadly we just aren’t very good at it. Oh for Josh Benson and Billy Clarke, who could both hold the ball under pressure and link up with other team mates.

Sick of paying £10 to watch inept shite and sick of that flipping clicking noise on commentary

That clicking noise is Dolphin speak for we are excrement

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I wonder what Mr Fenty is thinking watching this, he'll never get his money back if we end up back in the tinpot.

The concept of playing it out is fine as it draws the opponent onto you and in theory creates space further up the pitch. Sadly we just aren’t very good at it. Oh for Josh Benson and Billy Clarke, who could both hold the ball under pressure and link up with other team mates.

I get the theory behind it but either we don’t have the nous to work it upfield with intelligent movement or else we don’t have the ability

All I see is us playing the ball around our penalty area inviting pressure on ourselves as the opposition chase us down, cutting down any options we have to move upfield before we then lose the ball

What a flipping moronic tackle. Only someone with two brain cells would lunge in like that. The sort of tackle a player makes when they're only bothered about picking up a paycheck and not arsed about anything else. Pathetic

To be fair I’ve watched it three times and it’s not clear that there was a deflection

You're kidding me!!! It was so obvious, look where the ball ended up, in the bottom corner opposite side  to where Russel was diving.

We are passing it around the back vut we dont have the players to do it, so many mistakes panicking then hoofing it up for it to come straight back then were under pressure.
Its as bad as ive seen in a good few years we have nothing up top to hold the ball up too much inexperience too many loan players signed.

Another one like the Exeter game in that we've fallen to pieces just before half time to make the second half nigh on impossible. Newport have been better but a raggy deflection and a stupid penalty are difficult to take.

FFS, it’s in times like this when we need to be the one consistent thing about our club. Yes we are crap at the minute but we cannot abandon them, they need us. Keep goingTown and we will turn things around #UTM. BTW JT doesn’t help my mood with his terrible commentary.

No need for rose to tackle at all. He’s having a bad game.

Edwards might be fast, tricky and exciting but I’m afraid that’s all he’s got.

Bennett looks nothing like the player he’s been against us in the past.

This is awful ☹️ Players look totally confused, commentary team confused, I’m confused and Newport take advantage of a disheveled team. Not good enough players to get out of this mess and I think they are close to being totally demoralised 😡

Rose not doing the job he was brought for. No example to younger players. Waterfall unable to show leadership and fashion a response to Newport's press. Hendrie hiding. We know they are under Ollies instruction but as senior players they should be able to put their stamp on the game . E.g. Launch it Harry!
Or just give away free kicks, pens. throw ins etc.

yellow cards, reds and resignations to follow.

I’m pleased we never offered Amond good terms, definitely unproven at this level...

Seriously though, I’m struggling to find a positive in that half...

The obvious point is that we look like a boys team in a men's league. No devil or will to win whatsoever.

A point would have been a massive result and I felt sorry for the players for the first goal to be fair. The penalty came from an experienced (also know in Town terms as past it) player who should know best.

Overall though the players seem to have no structure, direction, belief or plan, If you where to describe our on the field performance in that half it would sound like a Holloway press conference - lots of energy expelled for no real meaning.

The Board have under funded the club for years but not all of the nonsense we're seeing at the moment is coming from a GTFC press release, look away from the board room and to the dug out and you'll see a fair % of the problem.

I don't see the point of playing a way that does not suit the squad we have, most of which was acquired by the person who wanted to play that way. Most of our best players were the ones that were already here. So we end up buying a load more players who probably won't be able to play that way either and then get relegated. We'd be better of getting a manager who can get something out of the players we do have.

Push the boat out Mr Fenty for a change and get Hurst back in asap before it's too late.

When Jolley got us out of the scrape we were in last time he simplified everything. We went to a simple formation, played to our strengths and didn’t fanny around. I think Oli needs to take a leaf out of that book. We don’t have the players to play like Liverpool.

Oh and Fenty needs to put his hand in his pocket for once and buy a striker.  Gibson is National League North Standard and Green and Hanson have had it.

No need for rose to tackle at all. He’s having a bad game.

Edwards might be fast, tricky and exciting but I’m afraid that’s all he’s got.

Bennett looks nothing like the player he’s been against us in the past.

I think Rose is just frustrated, off the ball i have seen him venting several times when someone hits a stupid pass when a simple one is there and i think his frustration is boiling over.

They have looked sharper, better drilled and all that but a deflection and stupid penalty is all they had have to show, yes its 2 goals but Russell hasnt had much to do in all fairness.

Our issue again is transitioning between defense/ midfield to the front line. Gibson not holding anything up and we arent keeping the ball long enough to move forward as a unit.

As for the formation(s) then i have no idea who is where now.

This is awful. So weak across the team, dreadfully organised, and that has to be landed at the door of Ollie. FFS

I've said before that if Ollie wants to play out from the back using the keeper then we have to bite the bullet and acceot Macca is not the keeper we need (worrying that Ollie thought it could be). Having seen what we are like playing out from the back with a keeper that can do it - well it's no better is it. We can't do it. Accept it Ollie. Get a grip FFS

The goals we concede are laughably bad. Opposition don't have to play well, just keep the ball and we will find a way to concede for them.

Then we fail to score from chances other teams would bury with glee.

Having not bothered much this season, I've bitten the bullet tonight Nd decided to watch on ifollow, what a pitiful performance though. In the 40 + years of following town, this must be one of the worst teams we ve ever had.  Can't seem to string two passes together, no shape, and chasing shadows. Surely we aren't as bad as this? but unless things improve dramatically I fear the worst for this side... UTM

I was actually optimistic after the last 20 minutes at Colchester the other night, positive even but I'm back where I normally am by half time tonight

Holloway is yesterday's man, clueless, rambling, living on past glories and what he sees as interesting eccentricity, he must go NOW or we'll be at Kings Lynn next season (if they stay up of course)

Where the intercourse did Gibson come from.
He's never a footballer.
The Woods relegation side would have given this lot a fuckin tanking.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

They are 1 down but are by far the better side, looking a this they too will give us a good hiding.

You can usually judge a team on their goal difference, worst three:

Morecambe  -8
Town  -13
Southend  -23

I'd like him to stay until January and see what he does in the window. Sounding from the board though he's not able to do much.

Can we just hold off with the resignation bollox until we play the next 4 games against some of the other excrement teams. Then we’ll really see how bad we are or whether we will make it through.....

When do we ever do anything in January??

Mr Successful won't spend at the start of the season so we have no chance.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.

In fairness I never expected us to get anything out of tonight but I just hoped to see us put a few passes together and have a few good spells where we held our own and looked like a team if it was only for 10 minutes or so. We did it at Colchester (the finishing was shite though) but tonight has been back to the awful stuff we have sadly got used to under Holloway. I know Newport at top of the league but surely we could match them in the occasional situation

Was he the promising young lad where Holloway went to Brighton and chatted his parents into letting him sign for us with all sorts of promises about how Holloway would coach him and turn him into a great player

Bet they're regretting agreeing to it now

I don't want to accept this, but the reality is we were never gonna beat Newport tonight so this result changes nothing.

I'm not happy about saying that, but it's true they are just lightyears in front of us at the moment.

We gave Chelsea more of a game than we did Newport. Newport could easily have scored more if they really wanted to.

Probably more mobile than some of our forwards from what I've seen

Always pretty nifty when celebrating our winning goals.... remember them?

Quite an achievement to have such a huge squad yet end up with a 40+ goalkeeping coach on the pitch along with a right footed centre mid at left back.

We’ve got so many similar players - Williams, Windsor, Edwards, Tilley, Scannell all do basically the same thing.

Well that was pretty inadequate only positives Hewitt decent, Clifton and Hendrie ok.
Passing woeful, and usually too slow. Need to splash out big time on a midfielder, striker and central defender.

They are

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Thinking similar , two opportunities fell to him tonight and the result....... not a decent connection with either. Outside of those two he didnt really offer alot either in hold up play or assisting in chances.
If the other two really are that far behind that sort of showing then just chuck Adlard in.

We take that long getting out of defence The opponents would have time to build the Siegfried line. No one running through the channels - just passes to a marked man with his back to goal - easy meat. Don't we practice anything besides picking the ball out of the net. Absolutely diabolical and getting diabolicer by the minute. Absolute disgrace.

Hewitt yes but Clifton and Hendrie unable to drive forward or switch play. Instead, passing responsibility by going sideways and backwards. Pollock not a shadow of previous standards. Looks very unhappy, slower in thought and deed with every game like many others. Some seem to resent the challenge to show the 'character' Olly wants. Looks like this window could be carnage.

All the hard work the club did with Hurst I wasn't his biggest fan but we finally got promotion and that core team left.

And we ruined it the following season and we have never recovered or built a team since to challenge where Lincoln and Bristol Rovers kept there core team.

I think there are some positives to take from tonight. Owara Edwards again particular looked dangerous  going forward but his end product needs improving. For me Grimsbys best player. Montel Gibson I looked the look of as well. Very athletic looking player.

I think though Croft on the commentary summed it up best. To many players of the same ilk. To be fair I think all the players put the effort in though .

Its hard as well to make a proper analysis of the team without seeing them live. Watching them on the I follow is ok but isnt the same.

That's not true about any of our players in virtually any game this season. And therein lies the problem when you have a shaky defence as well.

Yes. I would love the likes of Siriki Dembele to be still here. In defence I wouldn't mind more of the type of  Sean Pearson back as well . Real warrior type of player for me.

Lost to top of the table by a deflection and a pen, had we anything up front to score goals it would have been a better result, having said that unless things change in the next four matches Ollie will go, on his own win, or pushed

Usain Bolt is a very athletic looking person , doesnt mean he is a good League 2 striker....Gibson really is useless with a football.

Edwards i am afraid has already dipped over the horizon for me....looked very exciting at first....but with each passing game i have got less and less excited to the point i no longer bother getting excited when he gets the ball, i now just try and predict at which point he will waste/lose possession, immediately...after the first man is beaten, maybe the second, maybe he will beat 3 men this time before knocking it for a throw in.
Zero end product.

I dont know where our budget fits with other teams in this division  but I try to take a pragmatic view . Make and try to get the best out of the players we have.

Hopefully Edwards will improve. Has some spark there and I always like watching him.

We have a salary cap, so the same as everyone else, supposing we've spent to the limit. Board say we haven't or have, depending on which interview you listen to.

With moosey on this one. Edwards has become increasingly frustrating and wasteful. He can beat as many players as he wants but it currently counts for jack shitt as his final ball/decision making is little better than appalling.

We are pathetically poor up front right now.

Loads of 5/10 meh player performances moulded into a 3/10 team performance ending in a 2-0 home defeat to a team that don't really look to have the quality of a table topping side..

It wasn't a 3/10 performance. Granted, it wasn't very good, but we lost to the team that's top of the league and they created one chance from open play after 1 minute and that was it. Yes, we self inflicted it with daft fouls and didn't deserve a goal, but it wasn't terrible. Sides lower down won't press as hard as Exeter and Cheltenham have done, so our style of play might be more successful with a bit more time for players to make decisions.

My biggest problem is this side reminds me so much of Slade a couple of years ago. Big squad, pass it around ok in the middle of the park, give away soft goals, never look like scoring a goal first, best football comes when we're behind and the opponents can sit back.

Can't even pass the ball when hitting it only 5 yards, that's about all the players.

Stop hoofing it past midfield thinking you are passing it to Vardy to run onto, you aren't

Someone tell Edwards he isn't Sterling even if he thinks he is. Send him on an intensive, "How to keep your balance course" Then preferably pass it to one of our own players, instead of losing it 9 times out of 10

Shoot when you get a chance, the goal is the rectangle thing with a net behind it.

The number of fouls we gave away last night was ridiculous. 20 is a joke

Succesful crosses, zero. Corners please oh please try to hit it past the first defender.

When playing it out from the back and it isn't working you could always try another way.

Hitting it past a defender is wonderful if you have the speed to outrun him, you don't so stop it.

I would add, stop making dodgy tackles in the penalty area (Rose please note)

I dont know where our budget fits with other teams in this division  but I try to take a pragmatic view . Make and try to get the best out of the players we have.

Hopefully Edwards will improve. Has some spark there and I always like watching him.

Budget is another matter , how much we pay Gibson or paid for him or the length of contract he got is irrelevant in some ways..... the point is he struggles to do some very basic things that i would expect of a professional footballer and one that plys his trade as a striker....ie kick the ball in the direction he wants it to go.
His goal for all the world looked like a scuffed effort that deceived the keeper, he is either offside, gives the ball away trying a first time lay off or loses it on his second/ third touch and in front of goal it would appear he just shuts his eyes and swings his leg.

The one thing that did impress me was some of his dead ball strikes but he doesnt even have the rights on those now with Rose, Bennett, Williams and Windsor muscling in. Would love to support him and believe in him fully but i just dont see "it" in him.

Regards Edwards, he has the skill running with the ball which is great , but his passing/ distribution is pretty poor and he overcooks it more often than not.  Improvements in this could come in time and come with playing regularly in a position with constant partners around him to build understanding.  More hopeful with him but not sure i or we have the time and patience to wait.
