Three changes for the Mariners today - but no sign of James Hanson.

Mattie Pollock replaces Duncan Idehen, Kyle Bennett comes in for Harry Clifton, while Owen Windsor starts in place of the injured Matt Green.

Town XI: McKeown, Hendrie, Waterfall, Pollock, Preston, Rose, Hewitt, Bennett, Scannell, Windsor, Edwards.

Subs: Battersby, Idehen, Starbuck, Taylor, Clifton, Williams, Gibson.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Not an half bad looking team, but as for Hanson, time to hang his boots up, body just isn't up to it anymore...he's become a waste of a pay packet now.😔

Watching the iFollow, showing awkward clips of people being filmed as they enter the stadium. Quite amusing.

Where's Max again?

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

We were behind early at Crawley but came back

Whether we can do it again though...a big ask

Got to hope we can keep in this and start to put them under pressure instead of inviting them on to us

No, you can blame both of them. Shouldn't be letting the opposition get to the ball in from a corner, but a goalkeeper supposedly renowned for his shot-stopping shouldn't be taking half an hour to dive towards a quite weakly hit attempt on goal. Not good enough from either player.

I don't care whether or not there's any romantic spark between them. I just want them to be alert on the pitch.

Calm down folks...it's early doors yet...

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

I’d love to know what we work on on the training ground, because it’s like we’re putting out 11 strangers every game. What’s concerning is the lack of tactical cohesion, I have no idea how we’re trying to play apart from shite.

Yeah you’d think we’d at least have some corner routines like Hendrie at the near post or something

And unless this is addressed we will struggle all season.  You need more than 1 person contributing to goals

I'd say so, we're giving them their half basically and then pressing them once they're in our half.  We still look clueless going forward, especially with them having 2 or 3 guys who can match Edwards pace

I hope in all the ,bawling from Ollie, that he tells Owura to look after the ball in key areas. He has been our main threat and liability at the same time.

Edward's doing nothing for me.
Bennett has picked a couple of nice passes out but just looks so pedestrian inbetween.
Windsor suffering the same fate as every other striker, poor service.
They have the pace over us in every department.

We have looked ok going forward in small patches but too often our passes are hopeful rather than purposeful.

They are leaving gaps, if we can keep hold of the ball long enough to exploit them.

Oh and very noticeable how much more energetic the players are when Holloway is screaming at them when we are pressing. He will have a sore throat tonight

Decent half. Look quite dangerous with Bennett dropping into the space and picking the passes.
Don’t think it was Hendrie’s goal, think it just went straight in with a Nick off the defender.

Two evenly matched teams.

I am actually pleased we are going direct more.

Bennett and scannel will be decent players for us. But they need game time. Gutting about scannels quad. But- time for Williams to show his worth, he has quality in there.

If the town fans were there and got talking to a Colchester fan they would not believe that after Vernams performance there last season he was allowed to leave on a free, that is really embarrassing.

You need to get your facts right.  We did not let him go, he wanted to play in a higher league, and wouldn't sign a contract with us.

Agree

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Odd decision to take Bennet off, he’s far from dynamic but I’m not sure who else we’ve got who can pick a pass.

Going to have to risk it, pushing up

Could work in our favour

But could equally go against us

Bringing on or starting Taylor in itself is a strange decision. Bring him on for Pollock I can only think he's just getting back from an injury

Probably created more chances tonight than the rest of the season put together. Not turned them into goals but overall a promising performance, will get 4 or 5 on another day

Shooting ourselves in the foot giving them two soft goals. But we were much the better in the second half.

a disastrous result, that brings home just how much of a relegation fight we are in, and its not even January.

this is what happens when you do not prioritise a striker, Holloway is completely to blame for this mess.

His management has been inept since the Summer.

Unlucky not to get anything from that. How we haven’t scored in that 2nd half I’ll never know. They were proper hanging on.

Sounded a lot better. Can defo build on that.UTM

Crap defending killed us
Very good performance to be fair
But not lethal for enough of the game at both ends
Just need some composure
Take some responsibility

I think we need to an experienced no nonsense defender
A leader
A Whittle type
No fuss

Starting to make chances and actually having shots at goal. Could have scored 4 or 5 probably will on another night Midfield actually providing the right ball in build up Not bad considering Green and The Crock Hanson both missing

Shame it seems its now the defence that is poor

By the end we were doing but scoring...

Colchester weren't anything special, we should of pressed and harrassed them all game and let them lump the ball forward.

We desperately need two strikers a goalscorer, a big guy to win things and hold the ball up, a guy in the middle to be that creative outlet and will run at people and another winger who will do the same.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

When I look at us at the moment

- Macca is in patchy form
- We’re paralysed by fear in defence
- Either by Ollie tinkering or injuries we never play the same midfield.
- We only ever get 1 man in the box
- We over complicate it when we should keep in simple.

Tonight though despite conceding 2 soft goals and defending like a bunch of fannies the lads did have a go and created enough opportunities to win the game, deserved a point if not more.

If we can just pick a settled side for a few games in a row we’ll destroy average sides like we played tonight and be able to avoid any relegation threat.

The best team certainly didn’t win tonight.

All that said I expect Newport to beat us and if we fail to get a result versus Mansfield on Saturday and Bradford best Oldham were in the relegation zone.

UTM!!

Gotta say, we didn't deserve to lose that game and overall really enjoyed the vast majority of it...but we can't keep letting soft goals in, Kyle Bennett backed out of all his challenges tonight and he could quite easily have stuck his foot in and stopped the kid shooting for their second goal.....feel for Holloway tonight, tried to be attacking and if not for their defenders chucking themselves all over the place we could have walked away 5-2..try again Tuesday, hopefully with the and intent and guts those boys showed tonight..

No where near good enough to be league players
Bennett, Windsor, Taylor, Williams, Gibson
Probably two or three I've missed.

Only just
Preston, Hewitt

Our squad does not even come in the average category

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Much more encouraging. We just aren’t getting the rub of the green at the moment are we. Distinct change in style- more direct which is a positive imo.

Keep this starting 11 with a couple of additions and we will be an ok team this year. Defo need another left back. As good as Preston is on the ball. He isn’t the best defensively. And in a team that doesn’t score a excrement load- that’s not ideal.

Hendrie is a really good player. Need him signed up for next year.

Well two goals that should be avoided cost us , how 3 or 4 men just let man run into box for 2nd goal wow , we should have scored 4 at least tonight some glaring misses , not downhearted after that the effort was there just final bit missing , put hanson in that team differant result

Just looking for signs of cohesion at this stage and we definitely deserved something from that game. They haven't lost at home all season and just had a bit more belief and experience. Stick a couple of experienced strikers in our team and we would have got at least a point today.

Think once we get 3 or 4 players in key areas come Jan and start playing those teams around us we'll be fine.

Unlucky today.

For those on audio only, we had some moments late on but no way were we on top all second half. At least we created chances but failure to pull the trigger or stay composed has cost us a point.
Ollie left it too late to go three at the back. Far too many backward passes in wide areas in the first half. Colchester's movement and passing not as good as Exeter but they found spaces in wide areas that we failed to find.

We make the game far too complicated. As soon as we upped the tempo we caused problems but spent too long in our own half again only to opt for the long diag often to a centre half.

Scannell didn't seem right from the start. Nowhere near as effective as last game. Their 16 year old was MOM.

Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh.
Frustrating watch that.  So much good stuff but undone by bad luck in front of goal and a spot of poor defending.  probably didn't want to give away a pen for their second.
So much to be positive about, but then as per usual we will probably be totally crap on Tuesday

Positive performance mate, credit where it's due (and the right to be negative and critical when that's due too) but well played tonight could have been 4, 5 or even 6-2 just got to be confidentand aggressive like that up front week in week out.

Not long since we had no shots on goal, looked afraid to have a go and lacked confidence in front of goal, the old Covid moaner said so himself. Well done tonight no chance of relegation provided we keep up that level of committment and effort. Goals will come if we play like that again thats for sure.

Well said Swin!!

Just need to be able to carry on that kind of performance from one game to the next

Hopefully the players will realise that tonight they deserved more and that the defeat shouldn't be too much of a disappointment

Just got to work on cutting out the silly errors and the points will start coming our way instead of going to the opposition

I think once he got in to our box our defence were frightend of giving away a penalty

If their forward had gone down, you can bet that's what would have happened

Just a pity he got so close to goal and was allowed to get his shot off... we allowed him to waltz through when in reality with so many defenders in the box he shouldn't have been anywhere close to scoring

I thought at times in that second we played some of the best football we have played so far this season and at times looked.far and away the better side.

Just at times we play too many passes around their area when a shot would have been better and very disappointing to let in two very poor goals.

Why are we playing so many away games?

Why are the local neighbours to the west playing better?

We should have a point at least.

I thought Willians did ok when he came on and like all of them he’s not had a run in the team, but I still think he’s got a bit to prove TBH.

There’s about three in there that aren’t good enough. But they all have everything and that’s all we can ask of them. The time is definitely up for Fenty. He is the thread that is holding everything back and it has to change. I’m past caring how, fans buy out, sugar daddy or anything.

Batch, Crombie, Moore K, Wiggington, Cumming, Waters, Bonnyman, Ford, Emson, Drinkell, Whymark. Love you all, You are the reason I'm on here. You've had help from Todd, Handyside, Futcher P, Groves, Mendonca, Macca etc etc etc. Up The Mariners!!!!!!!!!

As good as we were second half, and whilst I think we deserved a point, we left with nothing and couldn’t finish a dinner.

We’ve been here before and whatever people think of Holloway, whatever excuse they want to use, we’re staring a relegation battle in the face.

Yes, we might exist and for some that appears to be enough but going down was a disaster first time around, a second time would be even worse. Especially with the same leadership having learned absolutely flipping nothing clearly.

We need to do something otherwise this season that people seem happy wrote off actually ends in disaster...

Its probably what fenty wants.. drop a league  pay less wages etc  , he gets his money back quicker  . He wont lose any sleep if we only break even so long as he gets paid.. He only has one ambition now and that is to snuggle up to borris , and it was only a look at me thing owning a football club ,, not that the football has been worth watching , just been a struggle .. And i dont think Ollie would still be here if we went down , he would jump ship as he would not want that on his CV .
