Wolves wont let him play in the cup game on Saturday. Am I missing something because I thought he was on a season long loan?

More to the point.....why? Surely they arent expecting him to be ready to drop straight into their squad are they ? Looks nothing like a Premier League footballer to me.

Just a precaution that they don't want him cup-tied in case

Presumably when Wolves are out of the cup they will let him play for us in the semi final

I’m only assuming here but maybe there’s a recall clause in the loan if they get a bid for him in the transfer window. Not being cup-tied makes him a more attractive option to a struggling championship team with an open chequebook

Pointless, he isn't going to play for Wolves in the FA Cup this season. Doesn't make sense as he's on a season long loan. Unless they plan on recalling him in January for some reason. He isn't going into their team anytime soon from what I've seen, I'm not sure he should be in our team.

Have heard from a very reliable source that Nuno watched the Cheltenham match and is anticipating a repeat of the 1939 FA Cup semi.

I thought he was good on Tuesday. People praising Clifton, who I like a lot, but I thought he was awful at full back, whereas Taylor stepped up his game. I think people have blinkers on with him, he’s improving because Ollie is giving him a run of games.

As for Clifton, don’t get me wrong, I think his versatility will really help us this season, I just thought he had an off day, that’s all.

It was tongue in cheek, he's probably doing OK for a lower middle table Div 4 side but I don't see anyone with a cheque book rushing to sign him for the Chanpionship somehow so he should be ours for the season

Maybe it’s just a standard procedure for Wolves. If they’ve got lots of kids out on loan they can’t track every one in detail, and if they did their interest in what he’s doing is different from ours as fans of the club he’s loaned too.

His passing is generally quite tidy I think and he does try and get his foot on the ball but his passing is mainly only backwards or sideways, you could argue that he keeps things ticking over like it but when we lack creativity from centre mid it can be very infuriating.

From what I have seen he is not a patch on Josh benson

He’s a young kid who’s just starting his professional career in reality he’s never going to be great every game and will sometimes make mistakes whilst in possession or the wrong decisions if he gets in a good attacking opportunity.

Actually not wanting him cup tied is a measure of what Wolves think of him, they clearly rate him if only as a saleable asset.

Seems Benson and Glennon didn't get loans. A shame that they didn't just send them back out to us again at least for the three months to Christmas, they must be a bit gutted going back to that u23 structure.

Well Benson has been sub for the majority of their Premiership matches so I doubt he’s too gutted and is, what we all thought, a quality player. I noticed Glennon has also been sub on a number of occasions so it shows how lucky we were to have them even for a short period of time.

I think players of this quality, like Henderson, will only ever be with a L2 club for a maximum of one season as if they perform well their club either wants them back in the fold or wants them loaned out to a club at a higher level the next season.

Pity the season terminated early, as although Glennon got injured at Scunthorpe, would have been good to see Benson appear a few more times in a town shirt.

Most fans don't see what those in the game see. He clearly has talent or he wouldn't be on the books of a Prem club who have chosen him to go out on loan to get some experience.

Fans expect them to come straight in and be clearly better than those around them because of where they have come from. Thing is, he's here to develop and that takes time and patience.

Seen plenty of young players over the years that fans have decided ain't all that, only for them to go on to bigger and better things. Taylor may well be one of those, or he may not. He's here for us and his parent club to find out.

Taylor not being allowed to play is a positive not a negative, he's been awful game after game, passing s terrible, shys out of tackles, can't mark and jogs behind the man he's supposed to be tracking.

A heat map or cartwheel would be very telling though as to where those passes have been made.

No, why on earth would a Championship club look to sign a Premier League youngster who has just played for Wales U21 in an International match, AND scored one of their goals!

Wales under 21 isn't a great standard, if you look at their squad some of the players play non league football, obviously playing for his country is an achievement but I do think some people get carried away and think a call up to the senior squad is inevitable now, a senior call up will never happen for Clifton and from what I've seen is unlikely ever to happen for Taylor unless he develops dramatically as he gets older.

You're missing the point, if he's good enough for Wolves to keep him on their books, and good enough for the Welsh U21 Manager to select him for an International match, then I'm damn sure he's more than good enough to play for Grimsby Town!  Also I think that a Premier League Manager and a Welsh International Manager will know a lot more about foot ball than you and I will ever know, so I would definitely take their opinions any day over yours and others on here who think they know better.

This thread is pathetic, getting on the back of a young kid who’s just making his way in the game.

Incidentally this lad has also tried to develop his game by taking a loan away from home in a crummy backwater and in a team that in the main has looked completely dysfunctional.

For some reason though he had faith that coming to GTFC would make him a better player maybe we should put some faith in him.

Well said. I actually think that he's a decent composed neat and tidy young player, and with a more settled side, his confidence will grow enough to take a few more gambles with his passing..

I've watched one game this season and thought Morton was absolutely anonymous, offering very little.

Someone posted those pass maps a couple of days later and he made more passes than anyone on the pitch. It's a totally different game on a screen.

Taylor has grown on me over time, he’s decent and improving.

That Morton is way behind him in the pecking order, I’d say. Clifton and Rose still 1st choice, you’d think, but if we play 3 then Taylor seems the better passer of them.

This thread started with guesses why Wolves initially didn't want Taylor to play for us in the FA cup and it was suggested that maybe Championship clubs might come in for him so Wolves disn't want him cup tied.I doubted he would be a target for any club that high in the EFL
Just because he has appeared and scored for Wales U23s against the world ranked Moldova U23s and plays regularly on loan for a club towards the bottom end of D4 does not mean that Championship clubs are doing to descend on Wolves waving chequebook trying to sign him

Has something about him, but like a lot of players, didn't shine at GTFC.

With Taylor failing to make an impact here, Bristol City recalling Edwards and Morton, Tilley getting released and picked up by another club immediately (fully accepting that location may have played a huge part too)...I do wonder how much of an impact this has all had on Hurst's ability to recruit players.

Footballers talk, managers talk, loan managers talk...has the legacy of the last six months to a year created a problem where we're now known as a bad club to send players on loan too?  I'd point to the success of Benson and Glennon here, but if Burnley viewed their spell here as so beneficial then wouldn't they have offered further fringe players to Holloway in the summer?

More just thinking out loud than anything but if you're, lets say Brian Tinnion the loan manager at Bristol City.  You've recalled Edwards and Morton because of a few injuries in the first team.  But you've got a couple of 18-year-old lads who might benefit from a loan spell and you're looking at sending them out on loan, or even someone a bit older who is making a comeback from injury and needs some game time.  You speak to Edwards and Morton and ask for their view on their loan spell. "Yeah, it's excrement. The manager never spoke to us. He didn't know what tactics to play. We played darts.  The facilities are crap and I rolled my ankle every training session."   Probably not going to send that player to Grimsby are you?

On his way to League One, just goes to show how much a minority of individuals on here really know about players.

Fair play to him on his move and I hope he has a good career.

Doesn't take away from the fact he was utterly garbage here

A young lad thrust into a shitshow of a situation by the mad one and a geographic outpost. Dont think he was garbage at all and hope he goes on to be a success just like Windsor!

This. A defensive midfielder needs to be good at two things: breaking up play and making short quick accurate passes. All he was good for here was giving away free kicks and misplacing passes with depressing regularity.

He may be a good player in the future, but being a 'young lad' doesn't take away from the fact he was terrible here on numerous occasions.

Josh Benson and Anthony Glennon were also 'young lads' and the gulf in class was staggering.

Context is everything. In the context of this season, Taylor was dog, and contributed to us being terrible - he didn’t majestically soar above us and we pulled him down, he couldn’t do what he needed to do in this context.

In another context, with less pressure, more time on the ball, better players and a better manager, a different system, different opposition, better pitches, he might be a bit better.  But the best players are those who can adapt, I don’t think any of the loanees, bar Edwards and Windsor to a small extent, could get their heads out of u23s football. Embleton, Glennon, Benson all miles ahead when it came to adapting.

I saw more from Matete in one game than I did in Taylor and Morton put together.

Glennon & Benson the same, Patterson all those yrs ago, Kabba,

If you are heading out on loan to a club lower than where you are employed you should grab it and make a difference from the off.
Taylor started slow, made it up to the level of "well he is improving" ...or even the giddy heights of " he is better than Morton"
Matete was arguably our man of the match just a couple days after arriving.

Taylor was poor, nowhere near ready for the mens game. Note he is heading to league 1 not, could be they see him as a punt like Gibson/Spokes for us. With decent training, good support, a team able to play football he may do well eventually with time, but for us was utter garbage.

Reputation!

When Ollie first come here, Ollie had a reputation that other Managers liked, so to have the chance of one of their youngsters to play under him would be a no brainer for them. Hence the successful loans that we had last season.

Sadly, after losing his mind over the whole lockdown episode, he seemed to lose all clues as to which players were any good, or not, as was the case in many of the signings.

It seems like once Ollie departed, all of the loan teams wanted their players back, enhancing the idea I mentioned above. In their eyes, it was Ollie or no one.

They all went back to their clubs better players than when they arrived.

Unfortunately it was at darts not football.

Josh Magennis was crap for us. Just saying.

Plenty of others too, then went on to have decent careers.

A excrement loan spell doesn’t mean they won’t go on to have a decent career, equally, just because they do go on to a decent career doesn’t mean we can’t say it was a excrement loan spell.

Taylor was bottom, not the worst but not the best. Blame what you like but that’s as it was. Clubs may have called loan players back but then if that’s just becauee hollow head left then you’d question their judgement of such a fraud...

There’s numerous reasons for a good or bad loan spell. We could wax lyrical all night about it.

Another player that will be forgotten and disappear in to the past...

Wasn't utterly terrible for usually very quiet and anonymous.tidy player but the games simply passed him by with rarely making any kind of impact.
