That midfield pairing looks weak. Neither player has impressed me yet. We need Rose back in the middle is he injured?

Think Danny Rose is a big miss in that team in midfield, guess he's injured.

How many players do we have . and we cannot put a decent  midfield out . But football being how it is at the moment we will prob cruise it     And i realy dont think football will go on much longer the way teams and players are going down

Scunny having players self-isolating is no excuse - even playing away.

Shaktar had 10 players with Covid and still won at Real Madrid.

Alkmaar also lost about the same number of players and still won away to Napoli.

Maybe Rose in for Morton or Taylor, and Edwards, Scannell or Gomis running the wings and we would very nearly have the first choice team on the pitch.

The ref decides to not award us a penalty and send their player off so as to not ruin the game

We've been lucky with some bad referee decisions recently so maybe we were due to be screwed out of a penalty

Town need to get the ball in the danger area as much as possible.  Carlisle are well panicky in their box.  Did Clifton also get pulled back then?

Well taken routine. That style of corner really doesn't look like it should work but we've got 2 goals from it now, it's almost deceiving for the defenders as it looks easy.

Inviting a lot of pressure with fouls and misplaced passes. We should be far more composed in possession with a lead, just need to calm down and think about what they are doing. Another garbage set of officials, I don't think I've seen a good one this season that looks in any way qualified to do this. Being kicked all over the park again, wouldn't be surprised if we see more injuries. Carlisle don't look up to much going forward but if we give them enough chances they'll take one eventually, very shaky at the back if we can get balls in there more.

Poor game really but we’re winning at least.

We’re missing Edwards and his ability to get us up the pitch, Preston looks a lesser player without him on the pitch.

Sounds like Clifton might have to come off...not sure how with the size of our squad we've not managed to name one centre mid player on the bench!

Going to have to play a lot better than that second half if we're going to get anything out of the game. Carlisle pressing extremely well and we're giving unnecessary free kicks at will. And why do we keep trying to play football like that at the back? Definitely going to come a cropper with that sometime.

Just as poor a performance as Tuesday really but against poorer opposition , playing ourselves into trouble, only constructive play is down the right, centre of the park is pretty much a no man's land for us with or without the ball.

"Poorer opposition"? The've been on a 4 match unbeaten run!

Lucky to go in 1 - 0 up, we've given away far too many free kicks around the box as usual and also played our way into trouble on more than one occasion. If it carries on like this Carlisle will surely equalise even tho they haven't appeared to carry much threat.

Hopefully our performance will improve second half cos if we are tighter at the back Carlisle will probably struggle to score.

If Clifton has to be subbed play Williams deeper and bring Gomis on. Need a much better  half from Hendrie in terms of setting a standard.

In comparison to Harrogate I meant, thought they were impressive on Tuesday and made us second best,  whereas today I think we look as equally inept without the help

I meant go, retire, run off and hide under the bed anything, his time is up. If he's dropped he'll sulk and be back in again in a week. He thinks the keepers jersey is his forever, too comfy, taking it for granted

I have been saying for a couple of seasons that Macca was excellent when we were non-league but only average for a league 2 team and if we had ambitions to get promoted then we needed better . His basic flaws are still there - haphazard distribution and poor in the air.

Wind is definitely not helping but our passing has been poor this half, and we're just just not creating any chances!! I can see them nicking this.
In other news, Dembele puts Peterborough in front against Hull.

At the moment it doesn't appear we have a league 2 goalkeeper although he could be seen as entertaining I suppose

Gaurdiola at Man City says a keeper usually only has to make 2/3 saves a game, thats why his keeper is excellent with his feet, even Arteta at Arsenal said there was no point in closing him down as he is a better footballer then most other players, so as Macca has 2 left feet then whilst we ask him to play the ball out he is an accident waiting to happen, as demonstrated last 2 games.

Of course keepers can make mistakes, they all do . The difference with Macca is that his mistakes are so amateurish , unforced and the basic things that should never happen. The goal he "gifted" the other night was a prime example of his poor decision making.

Lack of movement and any good pass to pick is kind of the problem. We get stuck going back or we give the ball away.

Everyone is going to focus on the goalkeeper mistake but I think the game could have been won with some more quality in the attacking half of the pitch. Set pieces lacking, we still can't take a throw in that isn't obvious as nobody does anything to give a real option. Some quality free kicks would have won us goals. Windsor is a strong lad who wants the ball but at times probably got in the way or spent too long messing about with it. We want him on the end of chances we create but often the one trying to create the chance or track back to defend when we need him as somebody to get the ball to on a counter attack. Kind of a Bogle at times that wants to do everything himself when he gets frustrated.

We are just very careless with the ball from 1 to 11 evidently.

A draw was a fair result as both teams where bang average.

Worldies are one thing but basic errors are different. You don't expect a goalie to pull off a wonder save but  when he does it's great .You do ,however , expect him to do his " bread and butter " work without errors . It's the same with an outfield player. It's great when he can ping a 50 yard pass to a players feet but if he consistently  can't execute a 5 yard pass then he becomes a liability.

No other team so far has been worse at passing, free kicks, throw ins, goal kicks, corners, goalie howlers, conceding free kicks and on field leadership. So many issues which are systemic to our set up whichever eleven takes the field. Plusses? plenty of effort at times and more minutes for Hanson.

Edit: MOM- Waterfall.

This is no reflection on Maccas performance but we need a captain and leader in an outfield position. Who though is a question only Ollie can answer. I've never liked goalkeeper captains as I don't think they are in a position to inspire , read a game and help drive players on.

Wasteful I think is the best way to describe the game. We were absolutely awful from set pieces aside from the one half decent one that resulted in the goal.

Hope the injuries to Clifton and Tilley aren't too serious.

Morton and Taylor were pretty anonymous, nothing terrible but nothing too brilliant either.

Williams was pretty terrible today. Just wasn't in great positions to get the ball and when he did his passing and set pieces weren't up to scratch.

When Green came on we looked much more threatening on the left with his hold up play being a particular highlight.

Hope looked very lost when he first came on. Grew into the game a bit but I dont think he's knocking on the door of a first team spot.

Windsor showed a lot of spirit and some good touches but seemed to want to run away from the goal when he did get the ball.

Macca has always earned us more points than cost us.

Not sure about that. He’s guaranteed to throw one in probably 3-4 times a season in a manner you’d expect a keeper to only do once in a career. He’s rash, too slow across his line from distance, poor in the air and doesn’t inspire confidence.

I’d be more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if he hadn’t spat his dummy out over Henderson and then again after Jolley’s first season.

Crap game but the conditions were hardly condusive to much else. Maybe worth considering that delivering quality from set pieces in a howling, swirling gale isn't as easy as some imagine from their sofa's. I know forums 30 minutes after full time aren't ever the most balanced places but also worth considering that footballers lives might be as tough as everyone else's at the minute and maybe more mistakes might happen this season than would normally.

Terrible game in terrible conditions.

A point in a crap game, move on and go again.

We need to stop going over board on a game by game basis. Some on here and social media think we are world beaters one game and terrible three days later. Chill the intercourse out.

A word on Macca. Bad mistake but he has more than enough in the bank already this season to be given a break.

Prem teams get caught out playing it around at the back.  Why do we do it? We are not good enough.

Our passing and crossing still needs to improve.  We give so many free kicks away that invite direct pressure on our goal.

I usually use a moderate tone when talking about players.  However, I am exactly with Rancido on Macca.  Being a long and loyal servant of the club is irrelevant.  2 basic unavoidable awful errors have given the opposition 2 goals which effectively cost us 4 points in less than a week.

Making worldie saves is also irrelevant in my view.  Such saves only highlight the massive performance difference from the inexplicable and unexplainable member-ups.

The analogy being the frustration anyone would feel about a maths professor who could not add 2 plus 2.

Kicking is his weak area.  A key part of a keeper’s role these days.  I would like to see a serious challenge to his place from a viable alternative.

(Macca has always been prone to making inexplicable errors that result in goals.  Anyone remember that friendly against Sheff Wed, I think?  Macca kicked the ball out of his hands at the Pontoon end.  It ricocheted against their attacker in front of him straight into the net).

Spot on.
Don’t forget if Ollie wants to get another keeper Macca will throw his toys out the pram and threaten to leave the club, so I hope all you Macca fanboys are ready for this.

I’ve always said he’s a decent non league keeper, a good shot stopper but poor on crosses and very poor distribution and now Ollie clearly wants us to play from the back his flaws are plainly there to see, time and time again passing to defenders who are clearly not in a safe position to receive the ball i.e poor decision making.

I’ve never understood the “legend status” of Macca at the club, a good loyal servant for us in the non league years and got well paid for his services but clearly not good enough and consistent enough for a team wishing to get out of league 2, Why we gave him a very generous 3 year deal I do not know.

Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No

(I know we all love GTFC and the area) but if you were an outsider looking in would you want to come to Grimsby to play football?
It's no secret that in the past we've struggled to attract footballers to NE Lincs
Players incoming and present want to work and improve under Holloway. More so than they would have wanted to under Jolley, Slade, Hurst, Bignot, Wilkinson... which we painfully saw on many occasions

Besides Macca wants to be here. He's not just a player but also a fan

He also knows his selection is guaranteed (or thinks it is, if Holloway can really attract players because of his reputation he may wish to start looking at keepers)

Ian Holloway described Grimsby Town’s 1-1 draw with Carlisle United as “probably the worst game I’ve ever seen” as his side picked up their first point at home this season.

James McKeown’s mistake at the start of the second half ultimately proved decisive, with the Town skipper’s own goal meaning the points were shared after Mattie Pollock’s opener.

It was a game severely lacking in quality though, with neither side really threatening to go on and claim the win during the second half.

And Holloway admitted afterwards he may have to resist making as many changes to the Mariners going forward, having made another three adjustments from the defeat to Harrogate.
“I’m delighted with the point in the end, and that’s probably the worst game I’ve ever seen from both teams,” Holloway said.

“Certainly from my team. I’ve never seen so many mistakes, and I was waiting for the confidence to build.

“We did one thing right when we played a great move, took a risk, played it in, built down the left, got a corner and scored from it.

“That was what I wanted to see, then all of a sudden we’re giving it away, they’re blocking us and we stopped playing the right pass.

“I made another load of changes, and it’s difficult to have any sort of rhythm and believe in yourself in a slightly different shape, so I might have to go back to what we know and what we’ve done previously.

“I felt they lost a lot of belief in how good they are and where they should be passing, and we haven’t really got enough time to practice that well.

“I just praised them all and told them what I believe, what we’ve got to do and how difficult it is because we’ve just been so thrown together.”

On the own-goal, Holloway added: “I missed the goal, I was trying to find my cap and I went to the toilet, so I came out, and instead of what I said at half-time helping them, it goes even worse.

“But we showed some steel and metal mentally to keep going and not fold.

“Our throw-ins are garbage, they really are, so it’s not just Macca.

“Again, we’ve hardly got any time to do that. That’s about two or three weeks, on an afternoon in the sun in pre-season when you work on them.”

Ian Holloway said basically everything I wanted to say about the game. People will focus on the one clanger and say it lost us the game but we had the whole second half after that to find a winner against a team not playing all that great. Struggled to string two passes together or get a decent set piece except the one we scored from, struggled against another team of lumbering mammoths when we should have had the ability and pace to run rings around them.

Macca might feel a tiny bit better if he watches L2 highlights tonight (well Tuesday on the coach perhaps). At least three other days to forget for some L2 keepers. More evidence too that overplaying at the back is risky. Good that it was Stevenage!
A little galling to see Jamille Matt having another stormer for Forest Green and Podge finishing a quality passing move for Newport. The only chance of points at Forest Green will be to play the channels, force errors, win corners and squeeze their midfield when they have the ball. Defending for 90 min won't work.
Might have been the right game for Scannell but it seems he has displeased Olly.

Why not Grimsby? We have this debate every few weeks, but would you rather play in a village (FGR) or a big city with all its associated problems (Bradford say) or perhaps the delights of Barrow stuck on the north west coast. Then we have our own Scunthorpe. Who could resist?

I have said before there are obviously only 22 other places for a league 2 standard player to play at; all of them have problems from location, history or lack of, too big or too small, on the way  up or on the way down, good manager or bad, and above all else, money.

Assuming we pay reasonable money to the players we want, we will always be able to attract good players. We always have, and we always will. If other clubs are paying more money then we will obviously struggle to get the best but it is not Grimsby itself that is the problem, at least no more or less than other places.

Matt has done alright for himself since being on loan with us. Always felt he didn't suit our system and how we wanted to play at the time and think other managers since have managed to play to his strengths.

Nothing to do with Macca’s mistake yesterday but I’ve thought for a while Waterfall should be captain, he is our only natural leader at the minute.
I noticed yesterday at the end of the game he went around and talked to many of the younger players as they were walking off the pitch

Glad that Ollie mentioned how dreadful we are at throw ins. We are consistently shockingly bad at them and it was the same last season. The worst team in the league at them I would think.

Whenever I mention that we should have someone who can take a good throw in I get shot down!

A good throw in can be as dangerous as a good free kick or corner.

The goal we scored came from building from the back but during the first half my thoughts were at some stage we were going to concede a goal through it; and there were a few moments when we were in danger of losing possesion.
The throw in to was it Waterfall who back passed to Macca for his error, was nearer the half way line than our goal line, surely we should be playing these forward down the line.

It's  not just lacking a good long throw. It's basic throw ins to the man in front of them. Even from these we immediately lose possession the majority of the time. Look at the opposition's  as if throw ins and compare them to ours in terms of how often we lose possession, it's so frustrating.

We're second best in the division at clearances apparently!

The last three goals we've conceded have cost us five points essentially and they've all been Macca's fault. Admittedly, I think Harrogate would have found another way through had the goals they scored not gone in, but we'll never know that. Hope this blip is over for Macca as it could start to unsettle Pollock and Waterfall who are the only steady/consistent pair in the spine of our team.

Pollock and Waterfall have cost us plenty of goals too. Waterfall has dropped a few clangers that have led to goals and their lack of pace often gets exploited by runners. They, particularly Waterfall, have been excellent the last couple of games, but a few weeks ago the same was being said about Macca losing confidence in the defenders.

Waterfall definitely has a clanger in him, I agree with that. Especially when the ball is on the deck. I can't think of any goals that have necessarily been his or Pollock's fault though?

Ah yeah, I forgot about that. League Cup though, better to get his clangers out of the way than in the league.
