Well done all involved.

Have donated and shared. Would urge anyone to, if they understandably cannot donate in the current climate, to share this to their friends and family.

Lovely work setting this up.

I've chipped in, just wish i could give more.

I wanted to write to Ollie myself, but felt best to leave it as he'll be inundated with messages and emotions at the moment.
If he does however read this thread, (however unlikely), this is to you Ollie;

The most heartfelt of sympathies go out to you. As someone who has lost family to suicide, and dealt with mental health battles myself, i can only imagine the pain and sadness you're feeling.
The important thing to remember, and it does take a while for this to sink in, is that you are in no way responsible for what happened, and shouldn't at all blame yourself. If anything, you would have had such a positive impact on this person's life, and you'd have kept them going at times you'd have not even realised.
Take care Gaffer, we all wish you and your loved ones the best.
You make us proud every day to support our team, and be from our town.

Great work setting this up and for such a good cause, I’ve chipped in, would be great if we meet and bust this target. This sort of gesture makes me proud to be a Mariner. Cheers all. H.

When I donated, it showed me as the first one, which felt a bit odd for some reason. Just done a couple of hours in my workshop and see it is now at 890. Well done to all.

I see that a couple of Lincoln fans have donated. Well done to them!

We may be rivals on the turf (when we're in the same Division that is   )but off it, it just goes to show that "the football family" can come together to support such a great cause.

Wish I could have donated more, however I gave what I could. It’s for a great cause, currently battling with my own issues, hoping that I can get through it with the help of my family and friends, hopefully start to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Donated and shared on FB

Having lost a dear friend who took his own life over 30 years ago now , I'll never forget receiving that sad news so when Ollie was talking on Tuesday night it brought it right back for me

All the questions about what could have been done to help etc, even though in reality sometimes you can't do anything

But if through our actions we can help just one person ( and their family too who are left devastated ) then this is a cause that everyone of us should support if we are able to

Wish I could have donated more, however I gave what I could. It’s for a great cause, currently battling with my own issues, hoping that I can get through it with the help of my family and friends, hopefully start to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Today a share is as valuable as donating. This needs to shared and shared and shared.

Thankyou

My uncle, a close friend and wife's Grandad have all taken their own life's. I know form first hand experience, how soul destroying it can be.
I was one of the last people to see my uncle alive, we never knew anything was a miss, until it came out in the inquest.

So sad that people feel the need to take their own life, as the only way out.
We need to be more open about our feelings, rather than bottling all up.

The Grimsby Town family are doing they bit to help those left behind

RIP and may you now be free from your pain.

Done.

Deepest sympathy to Olly and his friend’s family.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

Its in the Grimsby Telegraph, and Ollie is said how proud he is of us Grimsby Town fans. A very worthy cause, and i bow to all us fans to what we are doing. Brings back days gone by when we collected for Joe Waters and many other things. You guys are so awesome, makes me also proud to be one of thousands who support the best Club in the land. We rock.
Maybe that should be our theme song, We Will Rock You, i,ll get me coat.
Ive splashed our just giving on facebook, hoping for extra funding, could be on Look North tonight.

I have donated not just because of what Ollie has gone through but because what many people on here have gone/going through. Thank god that we are getting to the age where more and more people find it easier to talk about their struggles particuarly men. This forum proves that it is the engine for a wonderful community of fans- we may not always agree with each other but by god we can show our metal when we pull together.

Thank goodness for Town fans.  Everyday all we hear on the news is the selfish acts of the minority in this covid enviroment - 100's at weddings, student parties, super spreaders not self isolating, the list is endless.  You can quickly lose faith in the British public.  Then something like this happens, a selfless act by many.  It restores the faith in human kindness.  Amazing gesture by all, very proud to be a Mariner today.

Even though it is a non-footy topic I think it should be allowed on the footy side, to gain more traffic and awareness.

Well its nice to know its got across the globe. We have had donations from Norway and 2 from Vancouver Whitecaps fans in Canada, as well as donations from supporters of Harrogate, Lincoln and Scunny, and they are some of the ones who have made themselves known. Over 50% of all donators have chosen to remain anonymous.

Sorry to disagree and I’m not really sure but I think it might be best to keep it non-football
People might be less inclined to get involved if it’s ‘mainstream’ and may be better to keep it away from some of the idiots and trolls we get on here - not that they couldn’t get to it, just that they probably wouldn’t bother If they know it’s a limited audience
Maybe just a regular reminder that it’s there for those who want to use it?

Surpassed ourselves as a fan base again, hats off to all of those involved in the setting up of crowdfunder.

The generosity from our own fans and the wider footballing community underlines what a decent human our Ollie is. Forget football, rivalries and all of the other stuff that comes with it - when the football community comes together like this, it’s at its strongest.

Ollie, my thoughts go with you and all of the other people involved with such a tragic incident.

Well done folks, beaming to be a mariner today.

Crazy to think it has reached this figure a week before payday!

I am skint until I get paid next week but I will definitely contribute.  I've struggled myself on and off for a few years but I've found this year particularly tough.  A town fan that I have never spoke to reached out to me earlier this week and it helped me dig myself out of a hole I was getting into.

I've tweeted UndrTheCosh who have had a massive impact on mental health so hopefully they put it out there too.

Worth noting for anyone with an iPhone that you can use Apple Pay. That literally took me less than 20 seconds to do.

What’s great is that this is getting traction beyond Town fans too. It’s an issue that cuts across all society. All sectors. It shows that football as a whole is a community and is part of the community. Hat tipped to the fans of other clubs in this too.

Today I only shared it on Twitter with teams he had previously managed. Maybe share with every other league club too. Problem is that I can only do about 20 before Twitter thinks I'm a robot and stops access to my account for a while.
I did share it with many celebs and footballers with large numbers of followers too.

Earlier in the year a special message from Ollie on the celebration of my 90th birthday made that day extra special to me. I would now like to repay  that gesture in a small way by contributing to this worthy cause. I have been a proud supporter of the Mariners since 1941,but  never more proud than being to donate to this cause. I type this with tears in my eyes.

I did originally ask Les Brechin before posting this morning, so I am expecting it to stay put for the time being.

We were referring to the mental health thread itself which is up and running now on the non football side. It’s already had some brilliant contributions.

Great work in setting the fundraiser up-it’s a brilliant gesture and one I’m sure Ollie will never forget. It shows the power of community and it restores faith in people especially at time when many are not covering themselves in glory.I’m sure whichever charity/charities is/are chosen will be over the Moon.

First of all, well done all, amazing effort to get to such a large sum raised and so quickly!

I think it's definitely worth the organisers of this fundraiser approaching some of the bigger employers in the Grimsby area and beyond for a donation.

If they're approached publically on twitter they'll be more likely to donate...

Thinking about it... it's also worth approaching every Premier League club for a donation, publicly on twitter. Their squeals of "we're skint, there's a global pandemic don't you know?" should fall on deaf ears after the mind boggling amount of money the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea etc... have spent on players over the summer.

We seem to have stalled Ladies and Gents.

While the running total of £5331 is quite unbelievable, we need everyone to help share the JustGiving page across the whole of social media.

I am on Twitter, but as I have mentioned in a previous post, I am only able to send about 20 tweets before Twitter blocks my account, until I can prove who I am, and then continues to do the same thing time and time again.

I am not on Facebook or Instagram or any other social media platform, so that is where you can help with promoting the appeal. The more the merrier. Please do what you can. Even sharing with family and friends, and local businesses etc.

Lets not allow this be a one day wonder.

Maybe somebody could post on other clubs forums also? Especially those he managed and played for. Would be time consuming certainly but would be worth it.

The amount raised so far is incredible and while there is an undoubted passion to do more, there is also a need to reflect that maybe the family and friends concerned may not want their sad loss to be spread as far and wide on the internet as possible. There is a chance that every post, however well-intentioned, is unwarranted extra publicity on a very private matter. I'm sure the current level of gesture is more than enough for the original kind intentions.. unless IH says otherwise..

All well said BD but this isn't just about what happened to Ollie's friend, that was just the catalyst to get this whole idea off the ground. It's become, and rightly so, about raising awareness of mental health, certainly within the male community....

I understand that, I've donated, but have you asked the "catalyst" (friends and family) for their approval? If not, then don't use the "catalyst" for a much bigger idea than on the original Just Giving page. It may be a good time to try and approach IH for his feelings on wider publicity before progressing any further..

If I'd have tragically lost a loved one in this way, I'm not sure that I'd want their death to be used approaching national news outlets etc without permission by complete strangers, however worthy the cause is..

What about the mental health of the bereaved? Who at this stage can be sure whether extra publicity could harm them further or alternatively they take great strength from it? It's an admirable cause, but it needs to be progressed in the right way..

What a brilliant fundraiser and very worthy cause. I don't feel it will negatively impact the family at all as IH has already come out in local media outlets and spoke about the death of his best friend and also no names have been mentioned in relation to the family involved

The catalyst of all this is Ollie. It was seeing him in that aftermatch interview that started this all off. At no point have I/we named Ollie's mate, even though Ollie did give his name. Im not so callous to do that.

Yes, the mental health side of it could have helped his best mate, but this is more for us to help Ollie and his grieving. We want to let him know that he is not the only person going through these grievances, and that the whole idea of this appeal is to raise awareness of mental health issues and suicide prevention.

Ollie has been made aware of this appeal, and mentioned it in one of his interviews yesterday. He said it was a wonderful thing. Need I say more?

It was a brilliant idea and has raised a great amount of money and quite rightly you have been lauded for it. Absolutely brilliant job well done.
However bigdog makes some valid points and they may be worth consideration.
Assuming we know the answer because Ollie has said his name publicly or that we personally don’t think it will affect the family is not the same thing as knowing one way or the other, nor is Ollie saying it’s wonderful either.
Granted it may be difficult to find out but it may be a worthwhile task to know either way. However well intentioned I’m sure nobody wants to cause further stress at a time of such pain for the family.

To try and see if this has, inadvertently, caused any issues or distress  I have messaged the club to ask they let us know if it has so that can be addressed.

I would again say I think everyone on here has made it more about general awareness to a difficult subject.

I know that, whole heartedly I don't think for one minute anyone thought otherwise, I just think it was safer to be sure than sorry given the circumstances.

You've done the right thing Mikey. I don't think for one minute the original Just Giving page would have caused distress but progressing the idea from the original sentiment needs a little more thought to iron out unforeseen consequences.. if there are any.. The ambitions of the idea seem to have grown larger than its original concept over the past 24 hours..

Have to say you raised a very good point. And Sandford made a good balanced statement about it too.

Something odd has happened. I have just logged back in to the JustGiving page and the total which was above £6700 when I last looked, has dropped down to £6200 and the numbers of donations has dropped by about 30 too. The percentage has also dropped from 1,333% to 1,242%. All of these figures would and should still show the higher amount even if I had removed money.......which I havent.

I have emailed JustGiving to find out what has happened.

Fortunately one member sent me a screenshot showing the total was at £6,666, and Les Brechin also mentions, in one of the last posts on here, that he also saw the total as £6,666, so they cant deny the total wasnt a lot higher than it is showing.

Im wondering if they have taken the fees from the total. The fees are 2.9% + 25p on every donation, but on the figures of £6,700 and 470 donators equates to £194.30 + £117 which only equals £311.30.

I shall wait on an answer from them.

It may be unsuccessful donations?

I didn't realise that could happen. Let's just hope that if those whose payments have been unsuccessful are made aware and donate again.
I tried looking on the JustGiving website last night but couldn't find the page you linked to.
Thanks Dave

Amazing effort but I can’t help thinking it’s still only equates to an hours pay for the top earners in the premiership, I know you shouldn’t single them out every time but it’s a shame a few of them at the very top can’t get on board and chip in for a fellow ex pro.

Good mention on Quest just now.

Yes I am very happy about that. The 3 people on EFL on Quest last night were the first 3 people I tweeted about it. Just a pity Colin didn't mention the name of the appeal. We have had a few donations off the back of it though.

Sorry, but I've had to bump this thread, certainly after hearing a young man of 18 years of age has taken his own life after being released by Manchester City...so sad, my heart goes out to his friends and family..

That's terrible news such a young age thoughts are with his family and friends.

Total seems to be stuck on just over 6,500 quid any thoughts on how we can generate any more apart from sharing ?

I don't think it's got a wide appeal in football. The page is very much about Ollie and Grimsby Town. A few people might help out, but I think it's going to dwindle out now that most Grimsby fans have seen it and made their decision.

Fantastic response from the fans and Holloway seemed chuffed with it.

I tend to agree, the accent on Holloway and the Grimsby Town angle rather than mental health generally may not appeal very widely

I think it might be time to wrap it up rather than stagger on and on. How about closing it when we have 500 donations (495 at the moment)

'We got 500 donations when we only wanted £500' that's got a bit of a ring to it and over £6500 total is fantastic

Alternatively set a new target say £7500 and close it then and invite John Fenty to make it up to a round £10,000

7,500 pounds is great figure and if we are close it might encourage a few to donate but asking for 500 they might think they don't need any more donations.

Just a thought.

Yes I've been umming and ahhing whether to change the target figure we are aiming for. I can see it from both sides.

I've had messages from people who have said they donated because we have been so successful and had gone so far over the original target, but I have had messages from others saying they would have donated more but because we have far exceeded what we were asking for.
The numbers of the first sort far exceed the second.

No I won't shut it down anytime soon. I have already factored in that some people can't afford to donate until the end of the month. I set the duration to run for 8 weeks so it is set to end on 16th December.

If people are feeling flush at the end of October, and maybe even again in November, then we would obviously love it if they could afford to donate again.

Whatever you set it to or whatever we end up at please don't forget to invite John Fenty to round it up. Would be a great gesture of support for Holloway and more importantly mental health plus it would be good for his image, show everyone he's human and not always a bad guy (and he'd find it difficult to refuse) And before anyone objects to taking his money or letting him in on things surely what we raise is more important than where it comes from isn't it?

I have just had an email back from JustGiving with regards the  money 'disappearing' from the total. This is what they said

"It looks like due to the glitch we had on our system over the weekend, some of the donations that were originally not reflecting or delayed in processing were pushed through to your page total twice by our internal systems.

Please be assured this does not mean donors were charged multiple times, just that when your total was re-conciliated on Sunday evening, some donations were processed twice, which is why your total would have changed (this did not affect your supporter list only the function that calculates your total). This reconciliation process happens everyday to ensure the correct total is visible on your page and addresses any issues, so once the next check was made, all totals were balanced and any duplicates removed.

With this said, your current total (£6,822.00) is now showing the correct amount of donations made to your page
."

Not sure why this thread has been made a sticky, in my opinion this makes it far less visible than when it is floating around the top of the "regular" threads.

I was asked to make it a sticky, which is why I have done. If WBJS thinks it would be more affective not then I will unstick it.

I think he asked because it was about to drop off the first page.

Yes thats exactly the reason Les. It only takes a few new threads started up in a day and this one would be gone off the first page, to be rarely seen again. I dont think its a coincidence that since moving it to a 'sticky' that donations have stopped, they havent. We had nearly £100 donated within hours of this thread moving. Probably more the fact that myself and Mikey_345 havent been on Twitter much in the last 24 hours sharing it as much as we can.

Ive had several messages asking if we will still be accepting donations at the end of the month because they cant afford to donate until payday. Fingers crossed for another little spike in the total.

I am trying to organise something for the 'A Night With Ian Holloway' on Monday night. Will hear tomorrow if anything can be done or not.
