So is it 5-4-1 or 5-3-2/3-5-2 with Edwards/Tilley up top with Gibson?

Well certainly a shake up there.....some right out in the cold, some right in from the cold.

Interesting to see the shape.....5-4-1 ....3 - 1 - 2 -1 - 3 ....3-5-2...????????

Looks like 3-4-2-1 ... Waterfall, Pollock, Ohman.
                               Hendrie Morton Clifton Preston
                                          Tilley.   Edwards
                                                 Gibson

The old inverted Christmas tree formation!..
Be good to see Spokes and Hanson get some minutes in the second half.

Windsor, Hanson and Green on the bench? Not many options there.

I reckon unless Gibson scores in the first half, he will come off at half time and Hanson will make an appearance. The other two are obviously only there to cover for when Hanson is injured after 15 minutes on the pitch!

Incidentally, Ira Jackson Jnr hit a brace and one assist in the reserves game this afternoon. 3-2 winners

Especially Edwards .Seen him twice now and really like the look of him. Has good ball control in tight areas and can beat a man.

No he didn't
Total lack of concentration by Waterfall

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Dare I say it, as it stands we are above.....

Over the moon with that for a first half performance - miles better performance than any other game this season, though causing ourselves some unnecessary problems at the back. Front three look fast and dangerous though - good watch (for the first time this season)

At one point Hendrie had a shot about 10 yards outside box with ohman over lapping him.
This is away against the team who can go top with a win.

Holloway really is a different level for this league, and I flipping love it

Good half of football that, entertaining.

Hendrie and Tilley have been brilliant down the right side and Edwards is such a threat.

Clifton has won the ball a lot but needs to help get us forward better with some better distribution. Gibson needs to work on his finishing badly, we can’t afford for a striker to be missing 2 glorious chances like that.

Is it too much to ask for a clean sheet 2nd half?

This game beats the heck out of England v Belgium. Our front line is very pacey, although we are giving them plenty of room to attack, but good defending, for the most.

Good half from Town and an entertaining game. We should’ve had a couple more.
Have to say I thought Waterfall deliberately hand balled it in the box, great save 😂 probably should’ve been a pen and a red

It wouldn’t flatter us to be even further ahead. Gibson with 2 great chances and the offside header.

Edwards and Hendrie having stormers

Very entertaining game and we’ve played well with the front three causing them all sorts of problems.

It’s open though so could do with another!

Scarily open game for both teams....plenty of entertainment though...Waterfall clear handball not seen by the ref....goalkeeping gaffs, errors, wasted chances,
Going to be a penalty somewhere and more goals yet I would think.
Game is passing Morton by, not match ready IMO, players not over comfortable with defensive shape but going forward Gibson, Tilley (pleasantly suprisingly) and Edward's are too much for their cumbersome back line.

Pick a score...any score

Good half from Town!!

We look dangerous on the break, running at them with pace. They are more direct, but we keep winning the aerial duels.

Gifted them the equaliser, Macca rolls it to Waterfall on the edge of the area, he's closed down quickly, and scores. Tilley is my MOM so far, though the back five are all putting in a shift. Deserves his goal, through the keepers hands, but never mind. We press their defenders well, and they give it back to us.

Just hope we don't run out of steam, or start to sit back in the 2nd half. If we keep up our pressing game I think they will resort to lumping it.

I think there’s a decent player in Gibson, but seriously needs to work on his composure. Not to hit the target when 8 yards out and through on goal isn’t good enough.

Gibson getting into all the right positions but doesn't have any composure. I remember it taking Hearn about 10 games to score his first goal for us through so I think we need to give him time.

Edwards has really impressed me.

He’s been excellent. I thought he looked a little raw during his first couple of games and his touch looked a bit loose at times but he’s looked brilliant tonight.

If I could offer one constructive criticism it is that he doesn’t always have to do everything himself - sometimes the safe, easy ball is also the right one.

He was completely awake for that one, Hanson in an offside position but ball in a great area, great run and good composure.

Just been watching on my phone while out for MadeleyMariner's birthday under disapproving eyes from motherof and Auntyof. I've never been so happy to get my prediction the wrong way round, 3-1 win against a bit of a boggy side who are favourites in the division and going above Scunny with a game in hand, now to chow down on my sticky toffee pudding

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Must admit didn't see 4 points from 2 tough away games and goals now arriving too.

Bonus is beating Cheltenham on their own patch.

Second bonus, we go above Scunny.

Great night all round and things looking much more rosy.

Under normal circumstances this would’ve been a fantastic result. Under these bizarre circumstances it’s absolutely unreal - well done to everyone involved with that performance.

Our first league win in seven months. Amazing.

I think Gibson will come good in the end, just needed that little bit of composure on the ball as he seemed to panic in those one on ones. He did get a goal that was unfortunately offside, timing his runs probably also comes under composure but felt like he worked hard.

Great result and a really strong, encouraging performance.

Edwards looked like he was playing a different game to the rest at times.
Tilley and Hendrie both great first half before (understandably) tiring.
Clifton didn't stop running and battling. Again showed what an asset he is to have in the team.
A couple of shaky moments on the ball, but back 3 looked solid and actually tried to play football, which is great to see.
Preston another solid game, great save by Macca at 2-1 as a few have said already.

Even without the circumstances of the last few weeks, we should be absolutely delighted and really excited by tonight.

Well done lads, Ollie & backroom lads.

7 months since we last had this feeling and it is very, very nice. Great battling effort with some nice football played. Thought the way Edwards, Gibson and Tilley pressed their defence in the first half was a massive part of us winning that and we couldn't play like that with Hanson or Green. Nice to feel there's options there. Typical that Gibson absolutely buried the one where he was offside! Think Harry Clifton and Danny Preston deserve mentions for covering huge amounts of ground for a second time in 4 days. The three centre backs immense at set pieces as well. Hendrie motm for me though.

That first half was one of the most enjoyable I've seen in many a year. End to end, no real composure as such from Town, but absolutely electric pace that Cheltenham just couldn't deal with.

Was getting a bit nervous towards the end and was pleased to see the 3rd go in (which was more than deserved).

Home commentary on I-follow felt Cheltenham had an off day, but I think they were pressed so hard all game, they weren't really allowed to get going. Perhaps summed up in 86th minute when they had the ball at the back only to be immediately shut down, forcing their CB to kick the ball out for a throw.

Brave team selection and another great performance.

The pressing from the front was something else, particularly given the lack of training the players have had in recent weeks. I’m interested to see what we could look like once up to full fitness; Ollie’s interview after the Bolton game would suggest we’re currently a long way off that.

Windsor
PL finish
I think we've made huge strides in last two games
Heart
Spirit
Better stamina
Very solid at back
They had lots of possession but hardly any chances

Clifton was great - vital we have a grafter in midfield

Lots of options

I think the squad shaping up nicely

Ollie done all of this before
Built promotion winning teams
Great balance in squad

I'm confident...

I think it’s obvious all of our squad are prepared to work hard, and they all look like they care about putting a shift in.
Good to have numbers in depth with a high degree of changeability across the squad.

Really enjoyable watch tonight, no bad performances, and great to see us being so positive;

Macca - under intense pressure from crosses and long throws but never shirked a challenge even though he was being mauled on many occasions! Unreal save at 2-1

Hendrie - another great showing, with experience and positivity as well as a calm head

Preston - full of energy all game, this guy could have a big future

Waterfall - excellent leadership and commitment, yes their first goal was a blip but don’t think anyone told him he had a “man on”

Pollock - another great game and kept going despite cramp for about the last 20 mins

Ohman - gives you a heart attack when he goes to ground in the box!, but timed challenges well today and won lots in the air

Tilley - best game in a Town shirt, confident and threatening with his direct running in the first half

Clifton - so full or energy, a real box to box performance (Cunnington impressed)

Morton - grew in to the game, kept the ball well in the latter stages, could be a real asset after a few more games

Edwards - MOM (though not really fair to single just one out), totally unplayable at times, great goal and amazing levels of stamina

Gibson - ok, so he missed some sitters, but I like the look of this guy, I think I get why Ollie gave him a 3 year deal

Subs:

Idehen - another great prospect, a couple of hairy moments, but stood up to the late barrage

Windsor - shows some quality touches, gets stuck in with great energy, really pleased for him getting a goal

Hanson - showed what he brings to the Team, he gave us an “out” ball, and occupied multiple defenders leaving space for others

Lovely moment when Hanson was shuffling back onside, blowing out of his bottom, as Windsor steamed in for a great finish.

Great performance by town you feel Holloway making strides with the team, Gibson I hope he comes good but at the moment he's not good enough some of the chances he missed very poor.

I thought Clifton was excellent, Morton he's good passer off the ball and keeps things ticking over,  Edwards was 10 out of 10 fantastic performance, best performance from Tilley. Pollock very solid, Mckeown and Waterfall made a bit of a mess up for there goal, but Macca made some great saves.

Windsor came on very good finish.

Grimsby should of been out of site.

Haven’t seen the game as went to watch Lincoln United but in relation to the comments on Gibson I would add that it’s great to have a front player who is in a position to score 3 or 4 goals in an away match. Have to be there to miss em as they say and I agree with the earlier comparison with Hearn’s early career with town in that other parts of his game are good and perhaps once he nets a couple he will be up and away.

Seems once everyone is fit we have a lot of different options and was that the smallest front three we’ve ever turned out?

In the last few years, under Slade, Bignot, and Jolley, when was the last time we had a front three? Leaving someone up when they have a corner?? What is Holloway thinking? Doesn't he know the stats of defending corners?

Maybe Ollie had a different radio station on when Slade was giving his Powerpoint presentation live on air?
