Hi all. I hope you don't mind me invading the forum.
I run a podcast called Why Always Us where we speak to fans of a different club each week about all the biggest injustices that have ever happened to their team - on or off the field.

This weekend we're recording with two Grimsby Town supporters and so I wanted to ask you to list your top 3 worst in this thread, so I can ask our guests about any that they don't happen to bring up.

We're looking for terrible referee decisions, off field debacles and anything else where you think the football gods have it in for you or 'that could only happen to Grimsby' For example, our QPR fans mentioned a dodgy goal in a game that didn't even involve them that ended up getting them relegated, Everton had the outbreak of 2 world wars that broke up their championship winning teams. As a Spurs fan I'll never forget the disallowed goal at old trafford that was about 5 yards over the line.

If you're interested i will post the link to the episode in this thread once it's recorded. Thanks!

Before our time but World War Two for breaking up our best ever side which finished 5th in England's Premier league of the time and appeared in two FA Cup semi finals, the second of which is famous for the biggest crowd ever seen at Old Trafford a record which stands to this day.

I think my worst injustice was when we played Bristol Rovers in the Conference play off final in May 2015, when after being 1-0 up after 2 minutes, the Mariners continued to press and Rovers goalkeeper Puddy blatantly handled Ollie Palmer's shot outside the area and was only given a yellow card.

I can't find reference to it, but I seem to recall that the ref said he didn't want to ruin the game at such an early stage.

Bristol then went on to equalise and won on penalties, meaning we were back in the Conference the next season.

In my time watching the Scott Neilsen sending off in the play off Semi-Final and the Puddy handball are the two big ones. We deserved to get relegated in 2010 as we were dreadful. The biggest injustice we probably had as a club was the 1939 FA Cup Semi Final. We battered Wolves for the first 20 minutes and then their striker committed GBH on our goalkeeper who spent 10 days in hospital afterwards. We had 10 men versus their 11 and no proper goalkeeper. Unsuprisingly we lost 5-0. Had that not have happened we could have probably beaten Wolves and we would have been favorites in the final against a Porstmouth side who finished below us in the league that season.

Injustice yeah the gateshead game. Ive never felt so slow driving home after a game. Felt robbed. Think Challinor not getting a red and continuing to play football and now manage whilst a very gifted Martin Pringle never played again has to be up there too

At home to Bolton promotion 3 pointer, Sean Cunnington clean through on goal legged up from behind in the penalty area. linesman did his job and waved his flag for  2 or 3 mins for a really blatant penalty and the ref totally ignored him and despite protests from players refused to go and speak to him, Wonder if it was Ross Joyces dad or something. Think its on Youtube somewhere.
Another cracker salford away this year, scored from a direct free kick ref gave it, everyone headed back for the restart then after an ear battering from Salford manager, a couple of mins later the 4th official overuled the ref as we had a player on the end of the wall, first time Ive ever known a 4th official make decisions on the pitch based on a manager complaining to them

Appointing Mike Newell

Me getting excited for a new season to start then getting bummed 0-4 at home to Crewe in the first game of the season.

Signing Nick Colgan and then playing him.

Signing Jamie the ghost Clarke and playing him.

Adolf Hitler is the biggest ever villain for invading Austria and Poland when we were on the way to becoming an established top flight team (including reaching 2 FA Cup Semi-Finals).

We were relegated the first season after the war and have never been back again.

Whilst I would say that has to be one of the lowest points in my Town supporting career, there was no injustice, we deserved to be relegated.

For an injustice, there are a few including that penalty in the dying moments of the Cup game at Coventry. It was never in the area.

Being told were signing a ‘hairs on the back of your neck standing up’ type player.

Challinor, Nielsen red card, playoff final 2015, Mike Newell, Bignot, Bra gate...

Then there’s just been some horrific moments, relegation out the league, THAT fans forum, supporters smuggling smoke bombs as tampons, Ivano, Mike Newell, Braintree away, Dagenham away, Livvo nearly getting killed, Nick Colgan, Proudlock penalty...

Just scanned through.  Did anyone mention the ITV Digital collapse?

We were the club most affected.

The Braintree thrashing.

Getting relegated by 0.006 of a goal and 0.75 of a goal.

Not the worst example, not substantiated either, but probably a sad indictment of how the authorities view Grimsby Town:

I think it was in a cup competition (pre WW2 or during the war).  A game or replay could not be played.  The tie was awarded to the other team “as they would probably have won anyway”!

Sadly, there are a lot of examples to pick from.......😫

Biggest injustice?

One that sticks in my mind is Coventry's "goal" at Blundell Park a couple of seasons ago. Still to this day don't know how the ref allowed it to stand. Don't think he's reffed a league game since.

Why were we the club most affected?

Our total turnover in 2001/02 was £6.35m of which £3.83m was from television revenue. So 60% of our turnover was from ITV digital and that was lost overnight.

The following season our turnover dropped to £3.84m of which £1.13m came from television revenue.

We had the highest % of turnover coming from television revenue in 2001/02 and therefore lost the most as a percentage of turnover. Our turnover dropped 40% from the ITV digital season to the following season when Sky bought back the rights for a pittance.

We went from a club making a £1.4m profit to one that had to cut its budget by 25% and just managed to break even.

Add to that the transfer market in the FL collapsed so previously saleable assets we had like Danny Coyne and Phil Jevons suddenly became worthless as no one had any money to spend.

GollyGTFC provided a very good answer.

Town suffered disproportionately due to their (small) size compared to other bigger clubs.  We were more at risk in absorbing the financial impact of the ITV Digital crash.

Braintree away losing 5-0 in our first season non league.

Brought me down to earth along with a lot of other town fans.

We did not think it would be easy to win this league but did not see us losing 5-0 to a part time team.

The Bristol non sending off  incident has to be my biggest injustice given the circumstance/ occassion

Chasetown my absolute lowpoint, watching the players warm up on a bit of grass behind a burger van pre game before going on to lose, just all round embarrassing times

All the Fentyisms and antics over the last 10yrs or so, especially the fans forum debacle for sheer cringeworthiness

Signing Serge Makofo by accident, when we actually wanted Jean Paul Marna

Is that actually true though?

The 1-1 draw with Northampton in 2006 was a low for me. That late equaliser which denied us automatic promotion was gut wrenching. Then to lose to Cheltenham in the play-offs. Oh the injustice! It took me months to get over it. The whole 2006 World Cup was runied for me, I could never really get into it because of that game and that goal weeks before.

Leyton Orient got a late winner at Oxford, so the Northampton equaliser was irrelevent. We wouldn't have won promotion if we had beaten Northampton.

18 December 1979
Grimsby Town     0–2     Wolverhampton Wanderers
Hibbitt Goal (pen.)'
Richards Goal
Baseball Ground, Derby
Attendance: 16,475

Not a pen yard or so outside the box  Robbed I was convinced we had our name the cup

The result at  Burton which ended in Defeat which resulted in Non League football  very sad day for the club . The ref at Wembley 2015 shocking  not to send of the Bristol Rovers keeper

Was not allowed to go to the 2nd replay at the baseball ground, had to go to a Xmas party at Courtaulds.
Kept asking for score updates, gutted when I found the the final score, not even a pressie from Santa, could cheer me up, cannot remember what it was.

That Bolton game error was appalling. Partial redress was made when we beat them to the last automatic promotion spot by beating Exeter on the final day. Not sure whether they won the play-offs either...

Off field The Bonetti Incident, and George Kerr resigningn half way through the 79-80 Championship winning season

The Rovers Keeper and Cunnington incidents, as mentioned

Funny never had an issue with Neilsen being sent off

According to the brilliant "Champions" book which I finally got my hands on during the week Kerr definitely did NOT resign half way through the 79/80 promotion season.

I remember the Bolton decision as one of the worst I've ever seen although it was outside the box as far as I recall. The linesman waved for the foul the ref said play on but the linesman continued to wave as it was so utterlybblatant a foul, the ref pointer at him specifically and waved play on again. Didn't effect the outcome of the season though.

Bristol rovers non sending off was perhaps the most unjust decision

There was a couple of seasons where they swapped the home and away ends round. I can remember watching us lose to Arsenal in the FA Cup in early '86 from The Osmond.

I think the swap lasted a couple of seasons before they reverted to the norm because of the outcry from the majority of fans.

We are possibly going to be one of the worst affected by coronavirus too, given that our income is one of the most reliant on matchday income

I can think of a few (and most seem to be someone not being sent off...)

I'll start with

1903 Cheesed off with having to cross the Pennines once a season, Everton, Bury and Blackburn conspire in the infamous 'Lancashire Ring' scandal, fixing matches to ensure Town's relegation from the top flight. A Blackburn official is banned from football for life but the relegation is allowed to stand.

Danny Higinbotham only get a yellow card for the challenge on Livvo.

Dave Challinor not being sent off for ending Pringle's career.

Joyce not sending off the Brizzle keeper in the 2015 Play off final.

The Coventry goal that shouldn't have been allowed to stand think it was 2017.

Simeon Jackson not being sent off when he hospitalised Hess.

John Hartson blatantly punching the ball into the net at Selhurst Park when playing for Wimbledon and then laughing at us when we appealed for handball.

In 2002 or 2003. I remember Stuart Campbell was playing for us and Richard Smith scored from a corner (when does that ever happen)

As far as injustices go, I can see no further than Ross Joyce.

The Northampton equaliser, the late winner for Orient, Slade not turning up for his new contract signing and the no show against Cheltenham underlines the most sickening and depressing What if period for me.

Ross Joyce 100%.. Marc North missing a pen at home to Aldershot when we needed to win and ended up drawing 1-1, that sent us down 1988 another low point that.

Its strange because the following day or might have been same evening the highlights didn't show it at all. Its almaost as if the EFL/FA told tv companies to edit it out due to not wanting people to see the pure incompetence of the ref.

Ross Joyce was promoted to the EFL after that. Then in 16/17 he was ref away against Accrington Stanley, apparently he got so much stick from Town supporters, players and management he ask not to referee us again, and he has not.

It’s about four seconds in - the whole video is centred on the handball.

If we hadn’t got out of that infernal division, there’s no way I’d be able to watch it either. I don’t think I’ve ever been emotionally affected by the result of a football match quite like I was that game. It genuinely took me weeks to get over it.

Funnily enough this morning I woke up and thought "Enough's enough, it's time to let it go.". And I did.

I've come home from work, watched this, and now I'm just as furious as I was yesterday. And every day for the previous five years.

Poojah - I too was totally wiped out by that result.  I just thought "oh god, we need to start this whole process again next season".  Usually I can get over results pretty quickly but this just festered for weeks.

However,  I remember leaving the stadium and the sheer determination between the fans was incredible - you could feel that something was brewing that would carrying us through the next season.

Having said that, my bottom lip was wobbling a bit when that last Bristol penalty went in!

another one that sprang back to the front of my mind today was that Jordan Cook free kick being disallowed at Salford.

Possibly Matt Green's last League 2 goal involvement.

Hello again.
Here's the links to the episode if people are interested. Didn't have time to talk about all the suggestions here but thanks very much for all the replies. And I agree that handball not being a red is a complete joke.

Also available on most other podcast platforms and Spotify. I'd be delighted to get some feedback if you want to leave a review on itunes or just post below.. I hope we managed to do Grimsby some justice and that you continue listening when we cover other clubs.

Thanks

I'm shocked that our fan's forum wasn't up there as one of the worst moments...

Leyton Orient got a late winner at Oxford, so the Northampton equaliser was irrelevent. We wouldn't have won promotion if we had beaten Northampton.

That boils down to one moment for me, Bank Holiday Monday at Leyton Orient. Last minute, Marc Goodfellow pretty much has an open goal and spanners it. Put's that away and we have the momentum and it might just have stunted Orient's challenge.

If we hadn't won 2 of the last 9, if Slades hadn't made a needless substitution just before Rickie Lambert scored from a corner, if the away form hadn't fallen off a cliff in the second half of the season, if you do x,y and z bob's your uncle etc etc.

A good listen this. I enjoyed Lloyd Griffiths's comprehensive explanation of our major shareholder to a non-town fan.
