The match? Who's playing? What do monuments have to do with it? And why do you need to mention your mate is an "ex squadie" [sic]? Is it because he is well hard?

Planned on popping across the road to have a look.

Think I saw they are setting off from the leisure centre at 3, I assume they will be marching to the pier ?

Someone literally missing the point of everything makes a serious suggestion everyone trolls him...even folk that probably don’t agree with the protests...

I really don’t understand the need for ‘protection’ of war memorials during protests outside of Whitehall but if it’s keeping people occupied then crack on.

I expect people concerned about monuments to our armed forces ( emotive subject all round ) are worried there maybe some ill informed protesters who think that anybody who went to war at any point must be a racist as they went to kill other people for no other reason than they were for instance "German or Japanese" and therefore believe they deserve to have racist spray painted over their monuments.

I give the protesters a bit more credit than that but i suppose you never know, people are passionate, frustrated and bored plus with no genuine local  "racist figure statue" to target someone might attempt something stupid.....completely missing the point that all those that served and gave their lives in the armed forces, especially the world wars, fought for our freedom and liberty.

So by saying there isnf s need you are condoning the actions of those who have already and are plotting further damage to memorials.
Is it is acceptable for Brain Dead fools to deface war memorials?
My Grandad is dead in a cemetary in Holland so these people have the right to democracy and protest, to deface any memorial should be am immidiate jaolable offence regardless of if you are Black White or Any other colour.

The reality is that there have been BLM protests in towns all over the country, mostly without any trouble or defacing/toppling of statues. The fact that "statues" have suddenly become a big issue is just a convenient distraction for those who would prefer to talk about that than confront the reality of racism and show any empathy towards black people.

I’ve spoken to plenty of folk who’ve been to protests scattered about the country, the pattern seems to be that the protest is a calm and peaceful affair, then in come PC plod, much like football and stir up and antagonise folk, from either side and then it goes wrong.

Similarly, you’re naturally going to get the slightly imbalanced, ignorant on either side but the thought of people ‘guarding’ statues is flipping hilarious.

I mean, the mock people for following a religion and so forth but the bloke they appear to listen to doesn’t even use his real name. It’s all just laughable really.

Can't speak for the pier or leisure centre but there's a few police mulling around the lifeboat station area and there's a riot van parked on Brighton street.

Well that's gone well in London.
BLM have cancelled their protest & some of the alleged "protecters" ie neanderthals are now abusing the police.

Good luck to the police that have been assigned to control the Cleethorpes protest because there's heavy traffic and the prom is packed.

Nice to the protecters singing "Mariners" & respect social distancing.

The protesters got stopped at Brighton street slipway due to a large amount of people protecting the Memorial Gate and some spilled down to the prom when they saw them coming.

Everything seems under control.

Two police drones watching it all.

You obviously don't watch much news, did you not see the dozens of police officers with blood all over their faces at the BLM demonstration last week?

As for the statues it is supporters of the BLM movement that are saying they want them pulled down including the likes of Churchill's and Nelson's there was one flipping idiot on the news who said he felt threatend everytime he walked past a statue FFS.

I don’t like to say it but all this statue attacking and defending has been instigated, by error, by the police in Bristol last weekend. If they had done what they get paid to do and kept public order and stopped the vandalism of a statue, then everybody would have known what was allowed and what wasn’t.

A total embarrassment  if you were associated with the "Protectors"

State of the blokes running towards to the peaceful BLM protest today at Cleethorpes. Thugs just wanting to cause trouble. Chanting town songs. Proper sad. Anyway, congrats to the peaceful, socially distanced protest.

No doubt the GT will latch on to the football element & GTFC.
Sad state of affairs.

Extremists like another. Sad that some choose to associate themselves with our club.

Would be great to see an anti racist fan movement at our club, not one that comes from the league or the club.
I often wonder how welcoming Town games are if you’re not white and straight.

Great call HM.

Especially when you have posters saying this:

"Is there racism in Grimsby or Cleethorpes ?  I've never seen it- so i don't see the point of this march. They are the same protesters who protest about everything from stickers on jam jars to willies on jelly babies."

I like ya post match posts, HM - interesting reading for exiles like myself.

Like myself, I’m sure you have seen non-whites at away matches that are not family/friends of Town players. I have never seen any hassling or abuse of these people.

Black Town players have often attained cult status - Big Keith, Bogle and even the unproven Rose has his plaudits.  So the race issue among Town fans may be overblown.

Yes we have racist fans. Just like most other clubs. As a whole, are Town fans racist?  No. The number of whites supporting BLM is evidence of this. I hope

I’m with you that the vast majority of Town fans aren’t racist. It’s just that the minority aren’t always silent.
I’ve been following Town 30 years now, I’ve seen and heard things that aren’t acceptable.
Granted it’s better than it was, you still get the odd person shout racist abuse, I’ve been pleased to see more people challenge it in recent years though. The fact that it happens at all shows there is work still to be done.
Like you say I’ve never seen any direct hassling or abuse of BAME fans or families in the Town end, I have seen and heard it while they’ve been present though.

I’m not saying we are the worst or it’s a Grimsby thing. I’m just saying I’d like us to be the best.

Sadly there is little balance on race issues.

Please may I provide a middle ground.  Patriotism does not equal racism - we should be proud of the freedoms that we have today, thanks to our ancestors that made the ultimate sacrifice. Grimsby/Cleethorpes is proud of those that have made such sacrifice, brought home by the tragic local  deaths in Iraq n Afghanistan.  To host National Armed Forces Day a few years back, was a massive honour for our local area.  We should all be proud of that.

We should be proud of our roots just as I admire other nationalities for showing pride in their roots.  Whenever I see the Manics live, I admire their draping of the Welsh flag over their kit - a nice touch.  Being English n proud is not racist.  The pride of others in their nations is not racist either.

I read Brian Milne comments on the Telegraph site.  I don’t know the man so can only take him at face value.  He made all the right comments, showing absolute respect for our war memorial etc - I admire him for that.  I also feel for him that news of his march hit the media at the time of monument topplings. Very unfortunate timing and not his fault.

It is sad that the message of other BLM marches have been distracted by actions of a minority.  I’m sure organisers wanted only peaceful protests and the carrying of their messages.

I agree with Martin Vickers. With social distancing measures, not to mention weekend visitors to the seafront, I don’t think the march should’ve gone ahead. Happily for those attending, plenty of coverage has already been given to the BLM movement through other high profile marches/events.  On that front, I’m not sure what further, today would achieve.

There are plenty of people in Grimsby/Cleethorpes and beyond who can not comprehend why the likes of Winston’s Churchill’s monument have to be boarded up. Why a comic Fawlty Towers episode has to be removed albeit later reinstated.  They also cannot understand why English flags cannot be proudly displayed from local buildings.  They also cannot comprehend why the same moral support given to the BLM movement could not be given to poor Lee Rigby’s family and our brave Armed Forces.  There are plenty of white people that would love to airbrush the ultimate sacrifices made by those in WW1 and WW2 from our history.  That is so sad. Their sacrifices have given all of us the freedoms we have today.  This should be cherished.  And progress on race matters does need to be accelerated.  Recent events will help to that end - it’s a shame that a man had to lose his life in furtherance of this.

I remember town fans chanting “Jonny Ward’s Zulu army” at him a good number of years ago. Completely inappropriate given that he’s black/mixed race. I think at the time he wasn’t offended or didn’t make a big deal of it but that alone tells you the mentality of some town fans when it comes to fans who are non white.

Can’t see what this blm protest is supposed to achieve and even more so think Cleethorpes is totally the wrong place to do it.
Not surprised to see idiots getting in on the day either.

It’s a shame our media also doesn’t seem to report fairly and the left get away with murder while the right get branded even if they don’t do anything. You cAn be right and peaceful.

Seems to be an element of thought police going on . You don’t like their views you get shot down.

Not sure if you’re trolling or not but it’s quite simple. The point would be that we, as a club woud be more welcoming or appear to be more welcoming to those from BAME groups. Also, if I’m putting my PR and marketing cap on it’d also be very good publicity for the club too. St Pauli in Germany are a good example of this.

I don’t think anyone is saying you can’t be patriotic. It’s fine to be proud of where you come from and to shout about it. It’s also wonderful to remember those who made such great sacrifices. Let’s not honour them by behaving like twits.

Somebody nailed the Lee Rigby on another thread, it was a horrific murder committed by terrorists. They were arrested immediately and it was condemned everywhere. There was national mourning and huge coverage. There was pretty much complete moral support from the whole country barring some extremists.

This is about the institutional racism that people suffer from.
I’m not sure any monuments were in danger in cleethorpes, just an opportunity for a radicalised minority to sound off.

Quite moving.Hence this ex military personal man was trying to protect the statue of Churchill in London  as he claimed  not all who were there were far right  .Hence he was standing up for what Churchill achieved and trying to protect the statue from some people who wanted to deface it .Granted Churchill wasnt perfect but done a lot of good in helping beat the Nazis .Hence some have been in the army as the guy above and you can understand his deep convictions for being there .Only one can understand that if you've been a army veteran. Hence 2 sides to every story.

not trolling at all, dont see the point, Using football to solve society's problems? If thats the case, can we have an anti -anti semitic section, an anti IRA section, and and an anti left wing section. leave football out of this.

More welcoming? do your have evidence we have not been? Cant see any myself, nothing stopping BAME people coming in to watch Town, and there never has been. Left wing snowfalke excrement as per usual.

not trolling at all, dont see the point, Using football to solve society's problems? If thats the case, can we have an anti -anti semitic section, an anti IRA section, and and an anti left wing section. leave football out of this.

More welcoming? do your have evidence we have not been? Cant see any myself, nothing stopping BAME people coming in to watch Town, and there never has been. Left wing snowfalke excrement as per usual.

Because football is part of society. Of course as anti semitism is racism and why would support for any extremist group be tolerated. Plus I’ve never seen any anti semitism or pro ira views aired at a town game, unless I’ve missed it.
I have seen plenty of other incidents of racism, more than I’ve seen in any other part of society.

Why is that anti racism is always tagged as left wing? Shouldn’t be about your politics to be tolerant and accepting of others.

I dont accept that its Football's problem to solve it, to me its a sacred 90 minutes to get away from all the excrement that society brings. And as Ive mentioned, I dont see any 'you cant come in because your not welcome' signs up at Blundell Park.

He’s literally saying someone should be shot as a traitor for having a different view to him.
He's saying that Sadiq Khan doesnt fully appreciate what the Churchill statue represents as he hasnt been in the army.Hence unless youve seen comrades shot and seen people die on the frontlines you dont know what its really like.Just because Sadiq Khan is mayor doesn't make him immune to criticism . Similar to the journalists who  write their story's.

Yes a bit over the top but I can understand the frustrations given hes served his country in the military .

He isnt the only though who is angry though at Churchills statue being defaced though.

"More than 113,000 have signed the petition which was initiated by Len Chappell from the Forces Online veterans' website.

Launching the petition on Change.org, Mr Chappell said: "Following our latest round of open terrorism on the streets of the United Kingdom and the damaging and desecration of our war memorials, we would like to see automatic, full sentencing carried out to people that are filmed, bragging about or inciting others to get involved in the damage in any form.

"In 2019 this was debated now lets see some proper protection put in place for our military heritage, remembering the people that made the ultimate sacrifice to the United Kingdom and to understand that their lives mattered."

I find it disturbing the amount of people on social media talking about people making nazi salutes and singing town chants yesterday.
On top of seeing things in the press from a few years back when that racist women didn’t get a life time ban.

How the hell is the club meant to expand its fan base and grow in potential  when anyone who doesn’t know the club most likely thinks that we have a large amount of people that attend blundell park that act like the drunken racist facist louts on show from yesterday.

No one in the right mind would take there family anywhere near BP if you was surrounded by some of the thuggish intimidating divs shown on videos from yesterday.

I just hope that the wider public in north east Lincolnshire  are not ignorant and realise that the majority of us have the same mindset as them.

Absolutely agree that because someone is Mayor they are immune to criticism.

He actually calls him a traitor and says he should be shot, because he doesn’t agree with him.
There are lots of people who have opposing views on Churchill, should his statue be vandalised? No
Should people use it as an excuse to behave like girl privates? No

I’ve witnessed racist abuse on numerous occasions, monkey noises at opposition players, anti Asian chants and dwindling occurrences of homophobia. I’d be happy not to see any of that or politics at the game, I just want to see the footy.
These people protesting against the BLM protest yesterday were also busy singing Town songs. Some mammary was even egging the BLM protesters.

You serious? You only have to go back on the Brexit Debate, particularly with Lammy, not only where white people prejudiced, we were also Nazi's, and even then that accusation was in his own words 'not strong enough'. Not one of them have the straight white person anywhere near the top of their political agenda's..not even close.

Seems that we're heading back to the plight of the disadvantaged, straight, indigenous, white male. Not seen in these lands since the days of Nick Griffin.

I agree with the second comment.First comment doesnt make sense .Chances are  if Sadiq Khan served in the military his views would have been different similar to others who dont oppose the degrading of Winston Churchill statue. Theres no substitute for first hand experience .

Hence sometimes people have to listen to their own views and own consciousness and do whats right as opposed to some who follow like sheep and follow others.

Hence look at Martin Luther King Jr  quote when he said:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Hence as Ive mentioned before this isnt about black/white  left v right .This is about good v bad .

Sorry should’ve said it doesn’t mean he’s immune to criticism.

Seems quite a sensible response to board up some statues temporarily to protect them.

If the Nazi salutes are true, I love the irony of the performing of Nazi salutes whilst protecting a war memorial! Bizarre!

They say they are ‘proud’ of our victory over fascism whilst acting like fascist!

The single most important thing to take from those engaging in disorder (on both sides) is that no one has the right to take the law into their one hands. It is the responsibility of the police and local authorities to keep the peace, any failings by them on that part should rightly so be scrutinised by authorised bodies, so that changes for the better can be made for the future.

I do understand the sentiment of those protesting for greater equality and a world wide end to racism however I also understand and appreciate the love and affection shown to service men and women whom have lost their lives in the course of their duty. Neither side though is going to win friends or cover themselves in glory by trying to justify criminal activities regardless of the sentiment.

The club have had a go with a statement condemning the behaviour on Saturday.

It looks like it’s fallen through a thesaurus but the message is a good one. Well done those at the club.

Don't forget your passport and three month non-working visa, hopefully by then full border controls will be in place. You will then be able to apply to remain or even take Scottish nationality

With hindsight thats probably the best thing eg letting the police protect and board up the Churchill statue temporarily  .You can understand though for many this is a decisive issue especially when the war memorial of our great leader Churchill was being defaced by some.Again my gut reaction was to side with the guy in the video who was ex military and wanted to protest against some low life/and possibly more who wanted to deface the statue again. But looking at things now it was best for him to stay at home and possibly not incite more aggravation and possibly  get beat up by some rioters. But as noted I can understand his sentiments for him wanting to be there considering his military  background .
