Hess released, that's a shame. Can't argue about any of the others released really, although I didn't see a massive amount of Garmston.

Dissapointed about hess but situation we are in, cant afford to do it. Rest not fussed, maybe Grandin as i feel he had something there. Wish them all the best as right now its not a good time to be a footballer out of work

No sign of Vernam, I suppose that's the third reference about First Team players with options.

What we dont really know is how much the wages have played a part. Im not sure that Hess or Whitehouse where Holloway types of players.
Rose is the one that I think is dissapointing, felt there was a player there, and I felt he was underused or shall i say well short of where he should have been by the time Jolley left.

Rose was a bit of a marmite man... some people I know often sat calling for him to play more; other people sat telling me how useless he was. My opinion of him over the months even flicked from one to the other!

I think Vernam, Clarke, Wright and Benson don't appear in either list so presumably still under discussion. If we end up re-signing them, we actually have a pretty decent starting point for a squad - probably the strongest we have had for a while at this stage in the year. Keepers James McKeown, Sam Russell, Ollie Battersby, Defenders Ludvig Öhman, Luke Waterfall, Mattie Pollock, Luke Hendrie, Elliott Hewitt, Midfielders Harry Clifton, Max Wright, Josh Benson, Jock Curran, James Tilley Forwards Charles Vernam, James Hanson, Matt Green, Billy Clarke

totally agree, what numbers do we need squad wise, maybe another 3, plus some yoofs stepping up to Pro Ranks?

So basically everyone out of contract without an option has been released.
In normal circumstances I'd have liked to have seen Davis, Hessenthaler and Grandin stay. Not too bothered about the others, although Whitehouse was much improved under IH.

I know all we could do is tell him he's free to find a new club and we woudln't stand in his way, but we've got to find a way of getting him off the wage bill, because he either doesn't care or just isn't good enough watching him on the pitch

I expect Olly knows what he’s doing.......and spoken to the players released. He’s not daft and knows how to manage people. I would think some may still be on his list to re-sign if available and when money allows. He will also be able to pick from a bigger pool with increased availability at a much reduced cost. Just need to keep the bloody day trippers off Cleethorpes beach now...!

Really, really disappointed with Hess leaving. Best and most consistent player for us the last couple of seasons. He`s guaranteed to find a club at least at our level and maybe even in League 1. Let`s hope for the latter as he would probably make it difficult for us as an opponent in the same league. But.... in Holloway we trust...

I suspect as he played down south before coming here he was of our better paid players which most of us would assume is the major driver behind his release but agree with others that he has been our most consistent performer over his time with the club. I also wonder, given their ages, how fit and able Green and Hanson will be if we don’t play for six months or more? Rest is one thing but game time is much needed at their time of career.

Seems to be the way things are going. Wouldn't surprise me if we could be about to see substantially more youth players offered contracts than usual across the lower leagues.

Would have probably been expensive to pay Green off. If, and it’s a big if, we get an idea of when the club can start getting revenue in again and it’s sooner rather than later, then there’s one or two who I suspect we’ll see again.

Disapointed to see Hess leave, but I suspect in the coming months there maybe some very good players become available at considerably lower wages than last year. Every club in the country is going to have to cut its costs which may include smaller squads. Can also see Prem & Championship clubs wanting to send more squad players out on long term loans to cut costs.

It's a real shame that Hess' last action in a Town shirt was that assault in the Stevenage game. I will take some solace if today also happens to be the day they are removed from the League Two toilet bowl like the nasty little shít stain they are...

This is what I assumed. Not for one minute did I expect Hess to stay, I’d imagine he wanted to leave. Same with Davis, he only stayed because we took up his option and he had no choice. I hope we keep Wright and Vernam. And I’d actually be surprised if Öhman comes back, I’d doubt he wants to be here.

He will be costing whatever his wages are above and beyond the 600 quid a week max employees on furlough get. Which is no doubt quite considerable. Playing contracts have to be honoured in full by foot all teams as part of being in the EFL. I wonder if that will change fuether down the line. It's the nuclear option I guess if the no crowds thing continues and PFA doesn't come to an arrangemnt on player wages for existing contracts.

Shame about Hess but he has shone in what has been an average and o. Some days poor team and we need goals from mid field. Clearly IH thinks he can bring in better.
The reality is that unless we get clarity on whether or not we can play in front of supporters next season I’m not sure how you can offer a new recruit a deal?

Looking at the wages of the, as of yesterday, current players via the medium of Football Manager, which yes I know it is just a game but a lot of research goes into the facts and figures for each team, Whitehouse and Hess were 2 of the highest earners at the club.
So whichever way you look at the situation with Whitehouse, either being the highest earner, or having a potential ban hanging over him, I can see no other option for Ollie to release him.
Hess was a players player but he deserves to play at a higher level. He will be missed.
It would be interesting to see how much wage bill has been cut and how much will be made available for a few choice new faces.
Let's just hope Ollie has an influx of good players asking him if they can play for him for smaller wages.

Whilst Hessenthaler was a neat and tidy steady Eddie player, I don’t think he offers enough for a team challenging for promotion. He stood out in a pretty average team, but Clarke, Grandin, Benson etc were all clearly better and he couldn’t get back in the side. Could see this one coming a mile off as clearly Holloway thinks he can find better, and I think he can too.

When couldn’t he get back in the side? Injured against Stevenage he had not returned to full fitness by the time we played Sunny!!!

I wasn’t all impressed with him really . Honest player , you can’t ask any thing of his professionalism but don’t see him playing at a higher level really . Probably end up at Dover or Ebbsfleet being Kent through and through.

....not to mention Green would have to agree to it. A lot of people talking about paying players off as if we just give them a pay off and send them packing. It isn't as simple as that. It has to be an agreement with club and player. And which player is going to agree to make themselves unemployed in the current climate???

May have been down to his injury but I don't think Whitehouse really played as well as some on here were suggesting when we signed him. I never really expected him to be re-signed. With regard to Hess, as some have mentioned he was a very steady player but for a midfielder I don't think he was very creative or looked like he would add much to our goals tally and I thought we did OK when he was out injured. Anyway as some have said he may well have been looking to go back south.

Hess was a bit of a poor mans Stacey Caldicott. You also knew he was never ever going to score.
Top pro and such a hard worker, but as mentioned, if we are looking at promotion, we need a bit more than that. If we are happy with 16th, then he'd be one of the first on the teamsheet.

I know i was red crossed to death for my comments on Green but really does he offer anything to the team? i will still support the team through and through if hes in it or not.
Hess was a 100% player but there is better and probably cheaper. Whitehouse was a big let down for me, first season injured then second season a let down.
Hope Wright stays but will be a make or break season for him, hope he does as hes honest nice lad that has that something extra.
Vernam - easily our best attacking player on his day that if Olly can get him consistant surely a move back up the leagues for ggod money will be on the cards.
Garmston - probably wants to be somewere more local to him, looked ok when he played. who will do fifa now?
Strange how they call Buckley back but it gave them chance to asses him and shame he didnt make the grade. Clee town awaits
Cardwell - hope he got another trade lined up.
Rose - suspect he will go to conference 2 level and do well , hope so anyway.
Time to concentrate on our local area players as there is plenty of talent there

I think from listening to what Holloway has said in interviews we will see at least Hope, Idehen and Starbuck offered deals from the youth team. Add these to Battersby, Pollock, Curran, Clifton and hopefully Wright and we have a good group of youth team graduates in the first team. Out of all the negatives from the past couple of months we might see something special and a base to build on for the future- I would imagine Holloway would be brilliant for these young players and could really progress them.

I wasn't aware that Hessenthaler was after a move back down south. In which case you can't argue anything, that's just what it is. Really liked the lad, thought he was our best player over the last two years and wish him well.
I think he'll be difficult to replace as a holding midfielder type but Benson came in and showed he can offer more attacking intent from that position. Whereas Hess would intercept the play and give it to someone else, Benson would look to start an attack from that position. Not saying we'll get Benson on another loan deal but it set the standard of what we need to aspire towards and probably Holloway's game plan.
Rose is the only other one who seems to have split opinions. Very harsh on the lad but he looks to have gone backwards in the last 6-9 months. No doubting his athletic ability but his footballing know-how was very immature in my eyes, never quite seemed to know where to stand or when to move. Fact he seemed to be made of glass can't have gone in his favour either.

It's clearly a case of all those that could be released have been, to get the running costs down as much as possible. I'm sure there are some we would have liked to have kept and some on contract we would have liked to release, but it is what it is. There will be plenty of players to choose from once we get up and running again, and those teams that best get through the current times will be the ones in prime position to acquire them.
A lot of players will be lost to the game sadly, but then many people in all walks of life will have to reassess their options.

Matt Green won't be going anywhere - no one will be offering him (or anyone else) a contract anywhere near the package I imagine he's on here for the next twelve months. Unfortunately to merely survive through to whatever comes next I can see we had to release Hess & co. I imagine the scenario with the options on Vernam, Wright & Clarke is to offer extensions on reduced terms & conditions. Just hope we & others can come through this & have some footy to look forward to next season.

Of those 9 players released there are none that I feel strongly about I really don't think it's about players wanting to move back south etc - it's purely value for money, injury record, age, lack of experience etc Hess is a great pro but for me was almost 'vanilla' - what was he? Not a box to box Dizza type with goals in him; not especially creative (but how many are at L2 level?); a water carrier and they are two a penny at this level... I really loved his attitude though Davis, Cook, Rose, Whitehouse - all had on-going injuries and in latter's case another issue Cardwell, Buckley - Conference at best Garmston, Grandin - Ollie poss not convinced/wages and age with the latter
That leaves us with a really good nucleus, plus a mix of loanees (Benson quality) and youth players for next season; even better if Charles, Billy and Max re-sign
Remember, every L2 will be in same boat - to coin a horrible new phrase this is the 'new normal' and I think GTFC are very well placed with Ollie in charge
The other area that needs serious consideration is Rick Parry's (EFL chief) proposal/suggestion that from 2021/22 the following needs to be in place 1) £1.25m salary cap per team 2) Maximum 20 player squads of which 8 must be home-grown
Again GTFC is in a great place
Football like a lot of industries will have to 'reset' things and one good thing about all of this lock-down crap is a bit of sanity might return to the game with clubs having to 100% live within their means (although some clubs will find creative ways to bring in loads of extra cash - as has happened throughout footy history)
However, all those years of GTFC living within its means might soon bear fruit
