Standing water all over the pitch- doesnt look good

Steady on Hagrid. Relaying information will annoy the sneaky red crossers. Oh it already has. The sad littlefuckers/fat fingered twits.

Maybe you remember Pete that the pitch used to be basically sand and we had a proud boast that we were never rained off at BP. In fact I remember a game against Charlton where Matt Tees scored the winner and the pitch had standing water an hour before kick off. The ground staff just forked the goalmouths  and there wasn’t a puddle by kickoff time.

So bright spark thought the introduction of peat (not Pete ) would give the grass more to root into and from that time on we have been plagued by the water problem.

Well if DAY said we will not be increasing any more spending on the pitch according to LCL.we will have to wait for our new ground or better weather for the grass then.

We’re doomed under either option Pete.

I remember attending games at BP in the late 60's and early 70's when the pitch in January, February and March was much worse than it is now. Standards and techniques have come a long way since then as regards playing surface maintainance but not a lot can be done as regards heavy and persistent rainfall. New drainage systems could be fitted but you still need some kind of soakaway for the water to drain to. This could be a very expensive system to install in an existing ground but not necessarily so when designing a new one.

Rodley  is right, we had a playable pitch that was very decent in good weather right up to the 90s. The problems you refer to were caused by the grass being too easily uprooted so some seasons by Christmas the pitch was bare of grass right down the centre. So it wasn’t so much a quagmire as a beach. Then at the tail end of the season it was concrete. Some attempts were made to use better grass but then somebody thought the whole pitch needed re-soiling with peat adding and seeding but I can’t remember exactly which close season that happened. It might have coincided with the building of the “new” stand.

Didn’t we use to get awards for our pitch some years ago, don’t think it mattered which league we were in it as always praised, in fact I think some people complained that when we were in the championship it helped the better footballing teams when they came.
