Yeah it was something associated with the old amateur clubs.  All the Bufton-Tuftons playing for the Casuals etc. Wasn’t the original reason that those with double-barrelled names were bar stewards and couldn’t inherit the family estate?

Seems to be the last thirty years that it’s gone ‘down’ the social structure. Became a more middle-middle class thing in the 80s with feminism/female empowerment (which is a bit ironic a woman not adopting her husband’s name but keeping her father’s, so still patriarchal). Then it seemed to grow.

On a similar note, I heard somewhere that all England's double-barrelled named players were in the 1800s and the 2000s.

There was one professional player I half remember from the 70s who had a double-barrelled name. Bald bloke.  I can’t remember the name though 😕

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

It has tended to become more egalitarian of late due to the number of people who don't have married parents or are the result of a tryst and not a long term 'stable' relationship.
I have had to pick my words very carefully there!!

Cracking player. One of my favourites in the unsung players section. Finished earlier than he should through injury. At Forest he was the quickest player in Div. One. Cloughie thought he’d signed him for Derby but he went  to Man U for a lot of money and only played 30 odd games I think before he had to pack up.

When did this trend start? When I was a kid anyone with a D-B name was quite obviously a posh snob from the nose in the air classes. I realise that foreign players may have other reasons but why do we see so many British people and therefore players with D-B names now? Is it just a fad and fashion or is there a point to it?

higher divorce rates/ re-marrying and having children to different partners, worked with a couple of women recently who went double barrel so they could keep the name connection with their first born children and also helps when taking them away on holiday if you have a matching name on the passports.
