So, in the last week, the Sky funded Salford have signed James Wilson and drunk driver Darron Gibson, how can this be allowed on home gates of less than 2500?

Gary Neville is DEMANDING they make the playoffs. It’s time the EFL sorted this shambles out, but you know they won’t.

Owners should be able to invest/bankroll a club as much as they like so long as it doesn't result in the club being saddled with any form of debt that might endanger the club. Who knows? One day it might be us with a mega rich owner with deep pockets?

We all know that Neville et al don’t actually care about Salford and use it as a way of brokering deals to invest in property across the city.

Let’s face it, it must get at Neville being ‘a manc’ and seeing scousers buying up precious investment opportunities and huge swathes of the city.

Fact is, Salford is a play thing much like many other things. Nobody actually cares about them in reality. If they went down aside from the BBC and sky who would go a bit flaccid, 99% of folk wouldn’t even bat an eyelid.

They’re a weird club that exploit rules but then only people who need to take that blame are the rule makers for allowing them to be flouted and exploited.

I don’t see it as any different from Crawley (a few years back), Fleetwood, FGR, Chelsea, Man City.

The player contracts are debts in themselves. Unsustainable should the funding be pulled. I don't know how they are getting away with FFP but it can't be right, even if it is borderline within the rules.

Which goes back to my point of the rules being simplistic to manipulate or circumvent.

If they can be flounced and exploited, expect them to be flounced and exploited. Until the rules are genuinely robust this stuff will happen...

What is borderline within the rules for Christ's sakes?
The same as only just the right change from a tenner?
It's within the rules or it isn't.

But do you believe it’s the right thing to do regardless of whether it’s within the rules?

The FFP rules are different in Leagues 1 and 2 and "wealthy owners can therefore fund the club spending in a way that is not permitted in other divisions". So they are not cheating.

Whether it is right or wrong is another matter.

Of course it’s right . That’s how capitalism works it’s it ? It happens throughout the football world from the smallest team to the biggest. Just let go and enjoy watching The Mighty Mariners

Is it as simple as that though? I understand the Derby owner set up a new company, sold Pride Park to the company (himself for all intents and purposes) which allowed them to sign Wayne Rooney on huge money. There is some debate whether they are compliant with FFP. These loopholes need closing as clubs will use them to gain an advantage.

So as long as it’s within the rules morality can go to buggery. Next you’ll be saying as long as you don’t get caught it’s OK.

And yet I bet you were slagging off the MPs who exploited loopholes in their expenses claims.

In spite of all this bending of financial rules by various clubs, none of them ever seem to go that high in the football pyramind. Fleetwood look to have found their highest level at league 1, Crawley and Village Green in league 2. Manchester City may be the exception, but they climbed (cheated, if you see it that way) before financial rules came into being.
Eventually the rich kids will get bored of Salford and they'll settle at league 1 if they're lucky, more likely league 2. I find it hard to take them seriously, but it doesn't bother me too much -  there are bigger things to worry about.

FFP is a joke, designed primarily to stop the big clubs having their party ruined by another Man City.  If anyone were serious about stopping runaway debts, a simple spending cap would suffice.  That would make things too fair though, wouldn't it?

I think the best example of flouting the pre-FFP environment is Bournemouth, a historically smaller club than us who could never have made it to the Premier League ‘organically’.

That doesn’t mean you can’t admire the job Eddie Howe did in taking them all the way from the bottom tier to the top (with his little sabbatical at Burnley in between) - they spent what they spent incredibly effectively. But what they spent was nevertheless way above their natural means.

Yep. Bournemouth were serial offenders* when it came to spending money they didn’t have.

* and I don’t mean they kept nicking cornflakes
