Old away end terraces

Seen the earlier thread, about the dearth of standing areas at grounds now, and I suddenly had a waive of nostalgia for the old terracing, epecially away from home - although the Pontoon was pretty special too before the seating went in.

Favourite away terraces from days of yore include

Brentford 1971-2, when we were on LTV, and there were probably a couple of thousand Town fans there. It was going off big style throughout the game as Brentford's mod was swelled with others from across London.

Scunny at the Old Show Ground. Echoed brilliantly in there, especially as it was nearly always full when we went.

Wolves in the League Cup quarter final replay. Amazing night out, nearly in the League Cup semi final.

Cambridge United in 1971-2 their first full league season. Boxing day and we created their record crowd at the time.

Hull City at Boothferry Park. The ferry across, the train pulling up outside the stand, and usually well packed of Town fans enjoying the whole day out.

Middlesborough 1988-89 FAC. What an amazing day out, beating Bryan Robson's team, then fifth in the old First Division while we languished at the wrong end of the fourth. Never forget some of their more intellectually challenged fans trying to get past the police alsatians in non mans land between the two sets of fans.

Wimbledon 1988-89 FAC. Harry Haddock day. No further explanation needed.

Stoke City 1991-92. Town travelled in their thousands to the old Victoria Ground. Pitch invasion at the end of the game, police nowhere to be seen until they were all on it. Result virtually guaranteed us promotion.

Rotherham in the 70s.

Barnsley in the 70s, especially 1978-9 when we had one of the biggest followings I've ever been in for a league match.

Coventry 1971-2 FAC. Some 20,000 fans travelling to the old Highfield Road ground. Unbelievable atmosphere.

Liverpool 1978-9 FAC, again another 20,000 odd fans travelling. I maintain this will probably be the largest away following ever seen at Anfield, as their big league games would have had restrictions on away fans. No restrictions on Town fans that day.

Rochdale....for all the wrong reasons. The only time in my life I ever got arrested. Got a good beating behind the stand by three Old Bill who were keen to let me know they didn't like folk from Grimsby. Got off with it in court though as his case was taken apart by my solicitor. There was only 900 odd at the game as well!

Memories. You can't beat them.

Bryan Robson didn't go to Middlesbrough until 1994 after he left United. Bruce Rioch was Middlesbrough manager back then (1986-1990). And they were 13th at the time we beat them [url=https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-one/07-january-1989/]Click Here[/url].

Sunderlands Roker Park was decent too and although before my time I understand Charlton's The Valley used to hold the highest capacity of any English ground, so I'm sure their's was decent as well.

Elm Park Reading was great in the FA Cup replay before Wimbledon too.

One good think about the conference was some of the quaint old grounds with terracing behind the goal 👌

Beg to differ regarding Bruce Rioch at Middlesbrough,
It was another scot manager who's name escapes me, but he was sacked immediately after we beat them there comfortable

Yeah, Rioch was definitely Middlebrough manager when we beat them in the FA Cup in1989.

Think Jock forgot Doncaster away at the end of the 71/72 promotion season, massive town following a 2-1 defeat and a full on brick attack inside the ground. Have to say followers of any club in those days had some pretty tough away days where the colour of your trousers was likely to change every time you went round a street corner!!

Wolves , Burnley and Birmingham would have been the biggest terraces I ever stood on watching Town .
The Holt end and Villa was the best I ever saw although obviously watching town there we never got the chance to stand on it .

My biggest memory of that Boro game (apart from the game) was the bricks coming down from the stand to the right of the corner. And the windowless coach journey back

I was quizmaster at The Cricketers for about 15 years. That was before the days when internet mobile phones became popular though.

Yeah, we had to wait a while until the Old Bill cleared the Boro fans away. I was driving and we weren't parked too far away. This was obviously before the days of Sat Navs and we got behind another car with a Grimsby number plate so I thought I'd follow them. Unfortunately though they turned down a deadend and there were plenty locals still there looking at us rather menacingly. Never done a 3 point turn quicker in my life!

BillO - Was this the game when you drove the Town supporters coach through Brentford scum throwing bricks, smashing windows, showering people with glass blah blah?

Don't know what's so nostalgic - if it hadn't been for BillO, someone could have been seriously injured that day!

That might have been the following season when there was widespread unrest post match outside the ground. A friend and I had to get up to Ealing Broadway to get back to King's Cross and ended up dodging groups of locals wanting to damage us. Upon reaching the subway we had to cross a bridge, and we saw good numbers of Town fans battling to get down the other side. It was a very hairy day out that one, but London always was. Have found myself in the "different coloured" trousers type situation down there many a time.

Holt End is awesome. Was stood on it with Norwich in an fa cup semi final.the surge took me from half way up to near the bottom. Norwich ,wba, Peterborough and Ipshit had good away terraces back in the day. In recent times kidderminster has to be the best away day , covered terrace with awesome catering and by god could you make some noise there.  Aldershot wasnt bad either

League Cup QF replay - on the South Bank. Massive terrace, massive following, should have won - Micky Brolly two against Everton that got us there but missed a sitter that night, extra time one all - one on one with the keeper about 12 yards out and hit the bar...

Derby in 1981 - half of the side stand terrace that went below pitch level.

Millmoor - 1980 filled the away end and side stand.

It is also interesting that of the 24 clubs in the fourth division that season (88/89), 9 of them are now non league

The stoke game as previously mentioned

Newcastle and the dobbin goal

Tranmere and the Chima goal

Rotherham when we beat them 4-1

Alfreton was always good

Qpr was pretty decent too

Seen to remember going to QPR twice in a week many years ago , first one in the league hardly took anyone and very intimidating with cockernees stood with us .. second time week later in the cup walked in and was packed out. Loads of aggro after the game but town more than standing up to them which I enjoyed tbh a bit of payback from the week before bullying  

Peterborough away in Ron Ashmans time, remember police went into the town supporters and basically had to rescued by the cavalry, plod was not very happy after the game hence it got lively.

Roker park was always a good one remember Mendonca gaining a rather dodgy last min penalty against them then tucking it away to get us a point early 90's, glad to get a police escort back to our car that night.

Oakwell circa 91/92..open terrace, cracker of an atmosphere, did them 2-1..
Drive out with a scarf hanging out the passenger window, only to go straight past the Barnsley boys. One grabbed the scarf and bent my car door in half from the window up!....didn't stop to complain tho...🙄🙄

Huddersfield’s was a good away terrace at Leeds road

Surprised that nobody has not mentioned Coventry away, F.A.Cup, Laurie Mac, early seventies.
We went on the train, lost 1 - 0 to a dodgy penalty and a lot of commotion at the station on the way back.

Scunthorpe at the Old Show Ground was always a bit good in either end, the Donny Road End or the opposite end especially the DRE where both sets of fans used to chuck allsorts of things at each other.

27th March 1972, a Monday night we won two nil, Matt Tees got at least one was a great night and a week later away at Stockport another 2-0 win with thousands in the side stand.

Huge away following at QPR in the 1980-81 season when we nearly did the magical three successive promotions.  Was in the seats for this particular game. Terry Venables manager at the time before going on to manage England.
