Favourite Town Goal

After seeing numerous old Town goals pop up on my youtube home page in recent months (I guess their recommendations engine is improving) I am seeing more "Classic Town" goals.....

What is your favourite?

Cockerill v Huddersfield in 1990 - the most one sided game I've ever seen Town play.

I think thats the obvious choice.....

but there are a few that would easilly get into the top 10.....not all spectacular

Tony Ford v Swindon 79-80, and Bobby Mitchell v Carlise in the same season
Andy Parkinson v Yeovil year escapes me

Arnold's goal was like a release of 5 years of pent up frustration!  Awesome moment...

Super Clive against West Ham is one of my faves.   Just highlighted how good a player he was and how he never reached the heights he should have done.

Good shout on the Reddy goals, Torquay and Rochdale at home are good examples.  In a similar vein Gary Cohen away at Cheltenham when he absolutely roasted their defender for pace despite giving him a five-yard head start.

Terry Cooke away at Norwich to rescue a point, assist from Livvo after coming on as sub is another good one.  Not a great goal in terms of the build up but such an important goal.  Sticking with Livvo, possibly the one where he wiped out John Achterberg in the Tranmere goal the season before and Luke Cornwall tapped in.

Another one is Paul Groves away at QPR (2001ish?), they battered us all game with Leon Knight and Peter Crouch absolutely peppering Danny Coyne's goal all game.  One of the best goalkeeping displays I've ever seen in a Town shirt that day.

From memory we went in their area once and scored from a Groves header.  Not the greatest goal I've ever seen but more the moment.

And exactly which one of the SIX seasons in the conference were you not frustrated about then?!!  I'm intrigued by this x.

The best goal I never saw was Bobby Mitchell 's 30 yard screamer at Bolton.

Having not watched town all my life (Due to never being taken and being made to watch Premiershite). Obviously Arnold's at Wembley stands out. I grabbed a total stranger next to me and we looked like we've just won the lottery. Never had an experience like that in my life.

A mere deflection.  Pretty severe haircut Groves had that day.

Dunno about it being the best, but I was always an admirer of Alan Connell's lovely finish at Altrincham.

And the one at Barrow too. Probably even better. Deserved to be scored at less rubbish places!

As well as those 3, here a random one for you. Kevin Jobling's late winner at Reading in the FA Cup 4th Round replay in 1989.

All the Town fans behind the goal were celebrating after he'd taken it round the keeper before he rolled it into an empty net.

Also, at the time he scored, Big Keef's header to give us the lead at Wimbledon in the next round was a bit special.

I remember that match like it was yesterday - 19 year old me said to my mate at the time it was like watching Brazil and watching it back has just given me goose bumps. I remember the surges of celebration in the Pontoon and people going mental at what they were watching. The first and the third goals were just beautiful football, mostly one touch from end to end and Huddersfield were nowhere bloody near it. The fourth wasn’t a bad finish either. I’d give my left nut to be back there now.

October 1970..Alan Woodward at home to York. The ball came in from a cross and Woodward spectacularly vollied it into the top corner...to a 12 year old it was something magical...

Definitely Podge's penalty against Braintree, I don't know why but as soon as that went in, I just knew nothing could stop us.

For sheer elation Burnett backheel in Shield final, more recently and more importantly Bogle's second to seal the deal pretty much in Conference playoff final.

I'd like to add to your list Garry Birtles free kick vs Coventry (rumblows cup I think) unfortunately I haven't been able to find any highlights of this but I was stood on the bar behind the goal in the ponny and if he hadn't hit the top corner I think it would had hit my head off (it was when we had the metal fences).

Gary Chillds screamer against Hull City league cup second leg.we lost first leg 1 nil and child sy scored a beauty cutting in from the right wing and bent it in with the outside of his boot to clinch the tie with our second goal late in the game! I believe we were 2 divisions below them at the time ,it was August 89 I think

Seen so many good goals over the years that it's hard to pin any single one down, but there have been a few that sent shivers down my spine, mainly because they were landmark moments, maybe more than the actual quality of the goals themselves

Nathan Arnold at Wembley for the sheer relief in getting us back in the league after our demise and my son telling me it was "the best moment of his life"..... that was a few years ago mind  

The Wayne Burnett golden goal on our first trip to Wembley too.... bitter sweet for me that one because as soon as the wave of emotion hit, I just felt equally as sad knowing my dad who followed Town before me from cradle to grave had passed away before we ever got to the twin towers  

On a similar vein one that sticks out for me was Kev Drinkell equalising at Shrewsbury first game of the season (1980) where we had got back up to the second tier...I'd never seen Town so high in the pyramid, only knowing them as a third & fourth division team

The elation at knowing we would be mixing it with some of the bigger clubs has always stayed with me... it was a kind of milestone in my Town supporting life

Loads and loads too many to choose from over the years I’ve watched Town but for me it’s Nathan’s goal In the play off final, not that best goal in footballing terms but one that clearly meant so much to the player and the supporters.

Just to put another one in the mix, Brolly's winner against Everton at BP in 1979 in the League Cup.

What a night that was, over 22,000 in Blundell Park, the atmosphere was electric.

Can't believe it but no one has mentioned Donovan's volley away at Burnley. It's hard to imagine now that we'd never played at Wembley in our history. In those days a Wembley final meant everything. The atmosphere in the away end and on Bernard's bus after was pure jubilation. And what a goal!

Famous ones aside . I loved Disleys goal at home to Wrexham possibly last 5 minutes . He was awesome in the air and other players got of the way for him to head home ....

This one for me too, probably more so than Arnold’s. I was certain, absolutely certain, in that moment that the curse had been lifted and we were going to be back in the league. By contrast, the John Lewis goal a year earlier just felt ‘too early’.

Other less obvious ones which stand out:

• Groves away at Scunny in the Auto Windscreens on the road to Wembley
  
• Burnett away at QPR in a game where were completely outplayed but won thanks to that goal and a Danny Coyne masterclass
  
• Alan Pouton’s penalty away at West Brom circa 2001 in a game where we were again outplayed but again won thanks to the genius of Danny Coyne

It was a Paul Groves header which took a large deflection off QPR's Ian Barraclough.

We also beat them (2-1) at Loftus Road in October 1998. But that was prior to signing Danny Coyne. The goalscorers on that day were David Smith & Kingsley Black. Before that you have to go back to 1949 for a win at QPR when we beat them twice (February & December).

Having just Googled it it was actually Paul Raven, not Chettle who was sent off.

Great shout!   Yes, that was mental - I was in line with the volley - it was in from the second he touched it.  Absolute scenes when that hit the back of the net.

Joe Waters’ goal against Sheffield United in May 1980 takes some beating, in spite of Kev Dinkell’s hat trick in the same game.
