I think he will be a great figurehead for the club but I hope Hendrie will be the real captain on the field.

Very hard for a keeper to be skipper. One mistake, a goal given away and it is remembered, no way to be redeemed no matter how many SuperMac saves he makes afterwards. A keeper has enough to do without having to worry about other players as well. The only one to do it well was Dino Zoff and look what players he had in front of him!

Nevertheless, good luck James, let’s hope you are holding a trophy at the end of the season.

Don't see why people seem to care so much about who's made captain. Why would McKeown being made captain cause us to lose football matches? I can't think of anyone better who understands what the fans expect of the players.

If Jolley gets the preparation right and sends them out with the right tactics and game plan, and the players do what they've learnt in the week to the best of their abilities, the captain is only needed to shake hands at the start of the game and call heads or tails.

Because Rich, the captain has a job on the field to keep players playing to those instructions and in the dressing room before  and at half time. Harder to do that if you have just dropped a bollock and cost your side a goal and harder still for a keeper.

Fair point, but who's to say he isn't going to be amazing in the dressing room before the game and at half time? Who's to say he can't keep players playing to their instructions? He's respected by the other players, the manager trusts him implicitly. I'm sure he'll make a great captain. Everyone knows what he's given to this club. If a bollock is dropped, I doubt anyone will respect him less in the dressing room because they know how many points he's won us almost single-handedly.

Generally speaking it's probably more difficult to influence the players on the team when you're in an isolated position such as a goalkeeper.  I'm not saying that's definitive but they're the furthest away from everyone else on the pitch.

Whilst the goalkeeper has more of a broad view of the positions his team-mates are taking up, it's those more in the thick of it who are better placed to get a feel for what's needed.  Hence the tradition for either central defenders and centre backs to have the armband.

As said above, as long as you have natural leaders across the pitch and within the squad there's no real need for the captaincy as such to sit in any set position.   In my eyes the need for a captain to be a midfielder or centre-back is as old fashioned and redundant as the thought that they need to be eye-bulging and beating their chest every five seconds.

From what I have seen macca has a number of strengths and a couple of weaknesses, one of them being his communication with his defenders.

If by becoming captain he feels he has the authority and confidence to be more vocal and organise them, then that might just improve the whole back line as a unit. Dave Beasant was a great example when he was here, the defenders knew where to be and felt more confidence in him as a keeper.

Roll on Saturday.

Legend.

One of not so many recently, but a true Grimsby great IMO, and without him, we would be in non-league again, 100%

Do the players have to call him "sir"  or "cap'n"

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

I imagine it’s more a decision to keep him sweet and keep one of the senior players onboard. For someone who’s “town through & through”, he didn’t hang about with that transfer request when he had to sit on the bench behind Dean Henderson, who’s now playing in the Premier League. 7 games was it, one month? hhmmmm
