Should be a cracking atmosphere! We have not had enough of these Yorkshire home fixtures over the last ten years.

Even though your Bradfords, Barnsleys etc are not real rivals there always seemed to be something in the games to get the crowd going. For example smashing Barnsely 6-1 in 2004 with Handyside in defence for them and Rankin with his celebration in front of the Barnsley fans despite being on loan from them   .

Really looking forward to this one. I haven’t been to Blundell Park since we equalised from the pen spot just over 10 years ago.

Is there scope for more tickets if home fans can be relocated, or is it just not possible?

We can't have given them the full allocation as earlier today their Twiiter said that they are expecting a 2nd allocation to arrive tomorrow

It’s been some years since we’ve done it, but I think it’d be worth getting those temporary seats in the corner again for the Bradford and Scunny games. Leave them there all season; if we do well we can fill them ourselves for other games. Who knows.

It's all down to cost though isn't it.. If they hold 500 and say we fill them on an average of £15 per seat twice in the next year (£7,500) but it costs more than that to 'rent' them then there is no point

I was at Valley Parade in the late seventies/early eighties when Town won something like 3-1.

I think bricks were being thrown into the Town end from behind the stand.

I was lucky to get away with my life that day after being chased to the car by Bradford fans, I was a good runner in those days

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Must have been late 70s. We were two divisions above them in the early 80s, by the mid 80s they got to the second division, year we went down or the season before.

We didn't offer Lincoln any extra tickets for all the thousands of fans that supported them when Graham Taylor was manager, but were then kidnapped for 40 years...I can't see why we would offer Bradford any more. Scunthorpe won't fill the away end unless they are in the top three...

They have brought 1,900 (or a few hundred more before all seater) on 4 occasions in 50 years - twice in the FA Cup and twice when in a promotion position in the league. Certainly no reason to rent an extra 500 seats for them.

Didn't we buy those temporary green seats quite a few years back with the intention to rent them out when not in use at BP?

Handyside did play consistently at Championship level. Between 92 and 04 he played three seasons in what would now be League One - one each for us, Stoke and Barnsley - the rest of his games were second tier.

I think it’s more a question of whether he could have played top flight - liked a pint and a smoke did he not?

I’d put Tony Gallimore in a similar bracket - highly talented player whose career would probably have been brighter had he led a slightly more ‘professional’ lifestyle.

What you’d give for players of that quality now though...

I remember he also got a bit of abuse from a few Town fans as well, a small minority always seem to give ex-Town players a bit of abuse whenever they come back, not sure if this was just banter or not in this case.

Anyone remember if there was anything acrimonious about his departure?

Sometimes, when things aren't going well, you turn to your bench for inspiration - someone who can change the game, provide a spark of quality...

Thankfully, on this occasion, our first team did its job.

But you can probably understand why we got relegated at the end of the season. If it weren't for Jevons, we'd have been relegated sooner than in the last moments of the last game of the season.

Think off field antics didnt help his cause with whoever was at the top at the time.

Seem to recall an abandoned GTI at Hewitts Circus one evening being attributed to him  in the day.

When he was a bit younger and out with a lengthy injury, I remember him staggering around outside of JDs at about 10pm one night, absolutely battered. Probably not the best way to recover from an injury...

You are correct in saying he got injured so we got  a Chinese international player Zhang to replace him. We were reportedly paying him thirteen grand a week.
When he was fit again he couldn't get back so he signed for Barnsley.
Then Zhangs loan period expired and he went back to China so we were left with a shortage of centre halves.
Lenny Lawrence was the manager at the time I believe, with Huxford as chairman.

He went to Stoke from us didn't he? Then Barnsley.

I can vivdly remember one Wednesday evening when we were playing pool at The Old Clee Club. Handyside, Tony Gallimore and Tommy Widdrington were in there!

It was a rather entertaining evening.

What a game and what you can achieve when you run at defenders in the box.
Rankin Thorpe and Jevons ran them ragged.

Thorpe had as much goal threat as McKeown, but we really missed him when he left. Jevons hit a poor spell without his presence (finished the season  with 1 goal in 12 or 13 and that was a pen)

Yeah, our record with Thorpe in the side was pretty good. As soon as he left, Jevons stopped scoring and we slipped into the bottom four at exactly the wrong time.

Jevons was in the wilderness before he came back into the fold that season. I remember him crediting Graham Rodger a lot and it's no coincidence that his best form was when Rodger was caretaker manager.

I know he didn't make a good fist of it as manager a few years later but things might have been different had he been made Groves' successor instead of that abomination Nicky Law (who, funnily enough, now heads youth recruitment at Burnley).

Jevons' downturn in form also came exactly when Nicky Law took over...

Odd that.

All I remember about Nicky Law is walking down the tunnel as soon as the referee blew his whistle at the end of that fateful game at Tranmere with no acknowledgment to the fans.

The twit.

Back to the Bradford game.

Last night it was posted on their forum that they had sold 1400 and had around 400 tickets left.

Wasn't there a TV clip of him on his texting on his phone from the touchline during the game?  I remember hearing talk of agents in the dressing room at half-time too.

It's a toss up between that side under Law (once he'd brought all his mercenary mates in to supplement the existing egos in the dressing room) and the side that Mike Newell left us with for the biggest shower of shite I've ever seen in a Town shirt.

I could be wrong but wasn't Nicky Law's brief to keep us up and then he would be made permanent manager?

Seeing as though we had a good chance of avoiding the drop at Tranmere having taken the lead, it would be a bit strange for him to have been looking for something else before he knew he'd been sacked when we were actually relegated, right at the death

Really looking forward to this one. I haven’t been to Blundell Park since we equalised from the pen spot just over 10 years ago.

Is there scope for more tickets if home fans can be relocated, or is it just not possible?

I remember this one Queeny

We had our keeper sent off in the 90th minute for handling the ball outside the area... I was in line with the penalty area ( in our mainstand ) and thought it was more than harsh as it looked as if he was on the line.  Where was VAR then eh?

To add insult to injury the ref then gave you the penalty so deep in to stoppage time that it felt like we'd lost

Plenty of your fans came on the pitch to celebrate the point... I might be wrong but weren't you bottom at the time and that was the first point you'd had in a while?

Hopefully things will go our way this season but whatever it will be good to have a bit of banter with you bantams

That does ring a bell.  I remember his interview when appointed and he basically alluded to a remit of keeping us up and then pushing for the play-offs the next year...

Agent wise, dunno if it was his agent or those of the players.  Whatever happened, it didn't do his career any favours because he never managed in the league again, despite a far from shabby record previously.

Lyons was bloody awful, destroyed the best GTFC side in recent memory and yet he doesn’t even come close to Newell or Law in regard of being the worst manager we’ve had. Even Slade is worse than Lyons was. Only just though.

Batch, Crombie, Moore K, Wiggington, Cumming, Waters, Bonnyman, Ford, Emson, Drinkell, Whymark. Love you all, You are the reason I'm on here. You've had help from Todd, Handyside, Futcher P, Groves, Mendonca, Macca etc etc etc. Up The Mariners!!!!!!!!!

Just before I went to watch town so not sure on that gaffer. I know he often picked himself as player manager.    Maybe those that witnessed his tenure can elaborate why he isn't highly thought off.

I remember it, Phil Barnes got sent off for hand ball outside area and Gary Montgomery came on, was it Justin Whittle who gave away the penalty? Fair few Bradford fans ran on pitch and Stuart McCall had to usher them off

Lyons was a wannabe-Akinde-pen up front as I recall - hang around in the box and throw myself to the floor
when it comes near me.

Unfortunately Lyons was too thick to ensure there were opponents at least in touching distance of him before
he got down and dirty with BP. All his appeals were laughed off (in those days) iirc.

Wasn't it Lyons who described Gary Lund as "too intelligent" to be a good footballer?
