Absolute handful for any defender, surprised me just how mobile and athletic he is for a lad of his size...and if wants a bite of my sandwich, he can have the lot... Really impressed with his work rate and the big thing for me was his running off the ball, knowing where and when to be in the right place and the big thing was the way he meets the ball by running off the defender...high hopes for some attacking football this season but not getting over excited, Cleethorpes were a very, very poor side and looking forward to see these boys against Donny and Peterborough to see how we do against a good level of opposition

I also liked how Hanson came deep to get involved and then made his way back towards the box.

Was they? I seem to remember people were saying how poor he looked? It was before he played his first friendly they was saying how ace he was and then after the first league game in which we lost 4-1 and Welsh had a poor game, people seemed to wax lyrical after that

The Welsh I saw at Clee last year was not fit (in several senses) to lace the boots of Hanson who oozed class in finishing and teamwork. He also looked in good nick during the vigorous shuttle runs at half time, as did Matt Green. Hess, however, wasn't up to his normal high standards as if carrying a slight knock. There were meaty tackles on both sides, Rose being blocked at least twice.

I have only seen the highlights and photos but Harry Clifton looks to have filled out somewhat. Does he look as though he has in the flesh, as it were ?

Hess in my opinion ran the show in the first half. His positioning broke up any counter attack’s and I thought his use of the ball was brilliant. He allowed Whitehouse and Clifton freedom to bomb around and made everything tick.

Exciting midfield 3 that is, which has the energy cover a lot of ground giving the front 3 more of an attacking freedom.

Fully agree and from the shuttle runs Matt green seemed to leave the others behind in terms of fitness he looks in awesome shape Ogbu struggled a bit but that’s to be expected I think we will be trying to be much fitter this season only the first game in but most of the lads looked very good fitness wise

I think the Lump comparisons are very fair. Hanson is more mobile but he brings that experience and know how to the front-line.
The real difference between what I saw of Hanson and the other big men we've had since Lump is the ability to head the ball as opposed to let the ball hitting their head. His goals highlight how he almost passes the ball with his head but he did it throughout the game to bring others into play.
It was against a side several levels below us so we can't get too excited. But his performance was very encouraging and definitely gave the feeling that as long as we provide him with enough service, he will score goals and/or create chances for others. Be interesting to see how he fares against defenders at a higher level but the Clee Town lads were attracted to him like a beacon, which created so much space for our other attackers.

Out of interest, how did Elliot Whitehouse do? Was he playing further forward as a creator or is he more box to box?

Difficult to say regards Whitehouse especially when viewing the game at pitch level. It was a midfield 3 of him, Clifton and Hessenthaler.
Hessenthaler was still in his breaker-up-in-chief role, coming deep to get the ball from defence and just be a general nuisance. Clifton and Whitehouse were further forward but if pushed, I'd say it was Clifton as the furthest forward. I guess it was a diamond of sorts, Hessenthaler at the base, Clifton & Whitehouse central with Ogbu at the top with a free licence to drift out on either flank. The two full-backs were definitely pushing on to provide width.

To be fair on Saturday he seemed to be a target given his recent injury hell. He was certainly further forward along with Clifton whilst Hess linked defence and midfield.

Not wanting to pour cold water on Hanson's performance on Saturday but I can remember being at Winterton when we won 12-1 and new signing Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro scored 4 (including 1 screamer) and thinking what a player we had here.
Be interesting to see how he fares against Donny and Peterborough.

Pre-season means absolutely nothing. What Saturday has told me however is that he is a very big man and he can obviously head the ball and direct it towards the net. These things make me hopeful.

If I remember rightly Akpa-Akpro scored 4 goals in that game. A figure which he went on to match over a 46 game season.

He wasn't even really new by then since he signed in December of the year before. He didn't have a particularly brilliant record in France, he just had a cool name and resembled much better African footballers but with none of their skills. I think everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt the season before in the hope that he just needed time to adjust and would get better with a full pre season. I suppose we'll have to see how pre season pans out for Hanson. JLAA only had that one game in that pre season if I recall where he did anything useful.

Yeah, my mistake. Thought he was a new signing when he scored those 4 at Winterton. Shows how much of a mark he made on me I suppose.
