It's likely that most 'free agent' signings will happen in the next week so managers can get as much pre-season with them as possible. Most contracts ran up to 30th June so many would still be on their old club's payroll up till yesterday.

From the squad numbers announced last week, you can infer there will be four more signings to complete a 23 man senior squad (plus Pollock, Buckley and Curran).

I’d be surprised if most of not all of those signings weren’t complete within the next 10 days. Looking back to the beginning of last season, it’s clear that a good number of players weren’t in the condition they should have been and that had a major impact on the way we started the season.

I think Jolley is conscious of this, this time around and has probably been prepared to pay a premium to get deals done early. There’s a lot to be said for having the bulk of your squad together for a full pre-season. In terms of numbers at least, we must be well ahead of where we’ve been at this stage in recent years.

Fingers crossed that you’re right about Sowunmi! A pairing of him and Ludvig would feel like having a brick wall as centre backs

Hope you're right. Someone I know at Ipswich Town reckons they made a mistake releasing him

Bit far into his career for that I think, he's been at Braintree, Lowestoft and Yeovil since he left Portman Road but he was apparently regarded as a good prospect in the Ipswich academy at one time. Not thought to be Championship material at the time but very capable at Div 2 (or even Div 1) level now he's matured a bit.

Yes the comparison is not one that would work very well I suppose.

Completely different types of player as well, I think he was one of the tallest players I have seen at BP! I do remember him dominating in the air last season when we played them last season. You could not say that about Bennett (though he was obviously above L2 even when he was 18 ).

He was out for a long time with an ankle injury from October 2018 I think it may have contributed a lot to Yeovils awful run and subsequent relegation

Indeed, the stats seem to bear this out too, he only played 17 League 2 matches last season.

Yeovil with Sowunmi P17 W5 D7 L5 AvgPts: 1.29 per game
Yeovil total P46 W9 D13 L24 AvgPts: 0.87 per game

1.29 pts per game over the course of the entire season would have seen them very comfortably safe on 59 pts (they actually only got 40).

Looking at that they only lost 5 in 17 when he played and managed to lose a whopping 19 in 29 when he did not as well, so he certainly made them more solid.

There was a rumour a couple of weeks ago that town were interested in signing James Wilson a centre back from Lincoln, who has now had his contract terminated by mutual agreement so could previous rumour have any credibility?

Not a regular at Lincoln so hoping the Showumni rumour is the more reliable one.

As has been said time and time again with GTFC...Close but no cigar...trying to tempt someone from down south to up north is a nigh on impossible task, let along trying to convince them to move to Grimsby ..
For as much we all love our home town and won't let anyone berate it the truth is to those from South of the Watford gap it's a shite hole...
Time to try for choice B, C, or D Mr Jolley...

If it's true, and all I've read so far is "according to reports" on twitter rumour sites, then happier to have missed out than to have signed someone for two years who didn't want to be here. Had too many of those in the past.

Outside of Twitter, has it actually been confirmed that:

a) we’ve been in for him at all?
b) he’s signed for Colchester?

Not a lot of pace between them though. Ohman was pretty awsome in the air most games I saw him last season anyway.

Plenty of other decent centre backs out there, who knows maybe Pollock will step up to the mark in any case. Would be great if he turned out good enough to claim a first team spot this season.

I know it is only one game but I was impressed with his commitment at Exeter when he was thrown in, did not look overawed at all, and considering he had to play against one of the best strikers in the division in Stockley as well.

Wouldn't be surprised if we went for Wilson who's just been released by Lincoln. Their fans seem to think his only downside was not being dominant aerially but if he' s put alongside Ohman that might not be a big problem.

Do we just need cover in any case? Wilson might be looking for first team football after not really getting a look in at Lincoln.

Assuming Davis and Ohman will be the first choice in any case. So long as they are allowed to form an understanding should be a decent enough partnership.

Why don't we look to Hartlepool and do what they did to us a couple of years back and try and tempt Carl Magnay back. He was stripped of the captaincy there last season and only given a one year contract.  Wouldn't have the normal problems southern based players have with moving "up north"

Nott bothered he has gone to Colchester,

Ohman is immense in the air so why we would we need 2 men winning all the headers ?

By the sound of things he has injury issues as well so I would rather we sign a speedy defender to play with Ohman rather than a slow 6' 7'' one.

Don’t follow their tweets - I’d assume they get it from @up_the_mariners who have been spot on with recent news. View from the lower tweeted the Sowunmi news 15 minutes after Up The Mariners.

Not too fussed now hearing the reviews from Yeoville fans. James Wilson seems a good shout if not better replacement for Whitmore.

Why don't we look to Hartlepool and do what they did to us a couple of years back and try and tempt Carl Magnay back. He was stripped of the captaincy there last season and only given a one year contract.  Wouldn't have the normal problems southern based players have with moving "up north"

No thanks! He chose to leave.

I could tell you some things about Magnay (I’m not going to) that were shared with me by an ex Hartlepool team mate, but, suffice to say, he’ll be playing for another conference team if he’s lucky. Physical fitness, attitude, reasons for him losing the captaincy at Hartlepool.....all that stuff. No thanks.

Spennymoor have stupid money, paying some of the lads close to £900 a week for Part Time football.

I can’t imagine why Magnay has went there other than money.
