Can probably guarantee 10 goals a season from him. Would hope he’s not going to be our ‘marquee’ striker judging by his record of late but nice to get up and running.

Welcome Matt Green...
Just can't help but think we're already looking in the bargain bucket before we even get going .
Hardly has a great scoring record recently...just hope I'm chewing on this post at the end of the season after he's bagged himself 20+ goals!!!

From GTFC website.

“It feels great to be here. It’s a big club – you realise that as soon as you walk in through the door", said Green. "The amount of history and success the club has had over a long period of time. It’s great for me to be able to come here and play back in the Football League, and hopefully add some quality to the team."

“I like to play for clubs that are highly ambitious because I am myself, so I like to go somewhere that is fighting for promotion or a cup run. It’s all about trying to get as much success as you can as a player – especially if the manager is telling you that they’re going for it this season. He’s got a lot of experience, and he’s a good manager, and it’s something that you always want to be a part of.”

Interesting...I suppose it depends what you mean by ambitious.

And even more interesting, are we going for it this season?

I have the same feeling and just hope this is not a Brodie, signed on the basis of the odd good season long ago. A lot depends on who else we get and how we organise to get the best from him. I don't want to see him stranded on his own up front trying to make something out of hoofs from the back.

PLeased with this, good experienced Striker who will chip in with goals, if we can get him back to his Newport form I'll be thrilled though

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

I once said Gazza's IQ was less than his shirt number and he asked me: What's an IQ? - George Best

Pinched from the telegraph:

Matt's stats.

Mansfield: 83 starts, 3 sub, 54 goals
Birmingham City: 7 starts, 3 sub, 1 goal
Mansfield: 75 starts, 11 sub, 26 goals
Lincoln City: 45 starts, 19 sub, 15 goals
Salford City: 15 starts, 6 sub, 4 goals

so exactly 100 goals in 225 starts and 42 sub apps.

If those figures are correct not two shabby. Since he left Mansfield to join Brum he has managed 46 in 142 starts and 39 subs. Could easily do a job for us looking at those stats.

Bit like Thomas last season, although Thomas was never a prolific scorer had he been in a top side he would probably have got 20 goals.

Experienced striker who knows how to score a goal, he’ll do for me.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

According to mates over here in Lincoln scores 1 in 4 and gives 100%. Ideally a front two who both score between 12 & 20 goals would help solve some of our problems up front.

Still need to identify a partner plus hopefully a Devitt and Vernam on full power could be a good starting point.

Agree completely-doesn't matter who you have in the middle if they ain't getting the service they ain't going to score many-but we possibly have one already from the little I've seen of him.

Have always liked the look of him....thought he looked a right handful at times, on the move in the box and likes to attack the ball...remember him looking very strong at Mansfield a few seasons back but faded as the game went on.

Most importantly for me though as this is only the second week in June and we have hardly heard a peep from the club on potential signings or failed signings, does his mean we have actually managed to capture a first or second choice targetted player....and a striker no less !!??

That in itself a refreshing change....may not be the case but has seemed that for quite a few years now we have been recruiting strikers in late July/early August, none of which were our initial targets.

For once i am not saying ....who ??

Potentially a great signing. Something like 1 in 3 over a decent  period. Hopefully he’ll be given time and applauded if things don’t quite work out initially if he’s trying.

The comments from Nathan Arnold I’d take as a positive sign.

Welcome Matt. Let’s hope you put the gloss on our season with your silk-y skills and you don’t feel like you’re treading on eggshell.

Do you people think Salford City wanted to keep him Green played in nearly all their promotion push games, on their website Salford left it only a few days ago before announcing he was set to leave. Seems like a good signing to me after losing Thomas. Green should wack a fair few goals in providing he gets the service.

A good league 2 signing and whilst not exactly making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up a welcome addition going by former team mates and the Lincoln fan`s comments.UTM

I thought he signed a 2 year contract with Salford, so unlikely they wanted to keep him. But it shows that he's hungry to play football and have some success rather than sit on the bench and claim a decent pay packet.

Most of his games for Salford seem to have been 20 minute appearances at the end of the game from what I can see, can hardly expect him to have a great scoring record if he's not getting the time on the pitch.

He sounds like a hard working team player so we have a good starting point if we can keep him fit.

Not wanting to nitpick but I think Green started 15 of the 21 appearances he made at Salford last season (at least according to telegraph and transfmarkt websites)?

He did not do well goal scoring wise on the face of it. But no idea how he was played at Salford, if he was the main striker/played wide etc.

Also interesting that although Adam Rooney got 20 goals last season he went on a 10/11 game run without a goal so could be service to their forwards was not all that great (despite them winning promotion in the end).

Regards his chances of scoring goals for us this coming season if Norwood can score 30 goals in L2 the standard cannot be all that high...he never seemed especially good when we played FGR/Tranmere in the conference.

Also If you look at last seasons top scorers only four players got 20 goals or more.

Norwood 30
Walker 22
Maynard 21
Agard 20

So perhaps expecting to find a player who will bang in 25 goals is just not going to happen anyway. Probably as much to do with how the game is played now as opposed to the quality of finishers available.

Which makes it even more important that we get goals throughout the team as well.

For example Hess scored a grand total of 0 goals last season. We really need a midfielder to be getting 10+ if we are going to do anything next season especially if we do not have two forwards getting 30+ goals between them.

Was Lincoln's top scorer in this league season before last with around 15 goals. Still plenty to offer at 32 and says he's still quick in his interview. Lastly, he's settled in the local area.

It's a yes from me.

Someone who knows MG told me earlier in the week his heart wasn't 100% in it last season. Commuting from Lincoln where his kids are still at school etc.

Very happy to be coming to us and I think we'll see one quality season from MG - hopefully the second season too.

I was surprised he agreed to go to Salford but I imagine he was paid well.
He was also never starting a game, and was behind Rhead and others on the bench too, so hardly played for us.

I liked him as a player, and if you accept that he will miss chances that he should score then you will like him, he will score goals at L2 I am sure - I wish him well, he wasn't going to get game time at our place so its good for him to play as much as possible before he retires.

He has some pedigree in that he scored for Mansfield against Liverpool  in the FA Cup a few years ago.  Not many players can say that they scored against Liverpool these days. 😀

He's now 32 years old, played nearly all his football at either Conference or Div 4 level and supposed to be seen as as a good signing, well people are really clutching at straws now, he may still have enough in him to do okay when fit, but really is this the sort of player that is building for the future, that is going to take us up out of this horrible division, club going nowhere except struggle on...

Now steady on lad! It doesn't do to dent Fishy optimism in June. At least wait for August.

In any case Ronaldo was 33 when he signed for Juventus and some would seem to rate our bloke's ability only slightly below that level.

Sadly I think he's the best we're going to get. Any young, keen up and coming lads with good scoring records in the Conference ain't coming to BP.

30+ with lots of previous clubs and only a smattering of goals at those clubs is going to be the par for Grimsby Town's course (yet again) I'm afraid

I certainly am Les. As with all signings, I’ll have my initial thoughts about them when they sign, but judge them when they’ve played a few LEAGUE games.

Quite rightly only a week or so ago you were (once again) bemoaning the break up of the 2016 promotion winning team.

However your quote above isn't entirely fair as Green's record of 132 goals from 456 games is fairly similar to Amond's record of 144 from 457.

You might not live in Grimsby any longer but you've certainly retained that "glass half empty" mentality Grimbarians seem to revel in.

All the negative crap from the usual suspects, and we are not even halfway through June yet!

I didn't see anyone moaning about how old Dizza was when he played for us, also I remember watching 36 year old David Perkins having a great game for League 1 club, Tranmere Rovers not so long ago, and who can forget our own Paul Futcher, signed at 35 years old, and was one of the best centre halves seen at Blundell Park.

Edit:  Tony Ford played regularly till the age of 42, his last 7 seasons were all played in Division 3, which is the equivalent of todays League 1.

I think Matt green and paddy Amond is a very fair comparison. Remarkably similar records since 2011 in the fourth and fifth tiers. Both similar in terms of age, style of play too. Let’s hope Matt green can produce for us like Amond did!

Lincoln decided to effectively replace him with Akinde after MG had been top scorer the previous season. Very few Gimps seem to have a bad word about him and his scoring record is far better than anyone else at the club so let's give him the welcome he deserves rather than the usual, pre-conceived sniping.

Sounds like LJL from that comment.
I think this is a great first signing to go along with our younger forward players.
Anyone thinking hes too old should give him a chance before voicing concerns. Modern footballers dont retire at 30 anymore, thats the thinking that got Ivano playing here. Top flight clubs thought he was too old.

Busy forward with decent pace has always been my opinion of him. Can play through the middle or wide as well. I think it’s a great signing to start things off. If he could get to 15 league goals I think that would be a good return and then anything more would be excellent in my eyes.

Seems a well regarded player by the fans of other clubs he has played for.

The key thing will be the service we can deliver to him. Max Wright may well be the player to help with that.

The main difference between Green and Amond is that Green is more of a busybody around the pitch who will score and create maybe 1 in 10 attempts but with a high ratio of attempts will probably get results. Amond just tends to quietly lurk until an opening happens then tries to capitalise on it. Tends to score more of his chances at a lower ratio because he won't put himself about as much.

He'll probably end up being more of a Bogle that tries to do everything and you may get him on a good day or a not good day with no idea of which you get. Dunno if he's prone to sulking when things don't go his way like Bogle was not seen enough of him.

His scoring record over a long period is better than Lennie’s.

I can't believe all this negativity about this signing. So many posters criticise the Board for being negative about the running of the club but is nothing compared to the caustic comments on here. I really hope Green doesn't read this thread.

Very positive signing this imho. A player wanting to sign early and buying into the managers philosophy and vision.

Well.. I've looked through this thread and counted up 33 positive comments and 5 negative comments, so your peddling of fake news doesn't stack up really. Can't wait to slag the fans off can you? Running your mouth off in this way perpetuates more negativity than the 5 negative comments which couldn't even be termed that caustic..

Your post would be more accurate if it read..

I can't believe all this postivity about this signing. So many posters usually criticise the Board for being negative about the running of the club but it is the opposite when compared to the large majority of positive comments on here. I hope Green reads this thread to boost his confidence..

I can't believe all this negativity about this signing. So many posters criticise the Board for being negative about the running of the club but is nothing compared to the caustic comments on here. I really hope Green doesn't read this thread.

It is strange how the negative comments (as Bigdog states only 5/33) do seem to stick out more, seem more magnified.

Probably something to do with psychology or something. Perhaps we are subconsciously looking for the posts/posters who disagree with us.

If you are reading this Matt, remember 28/33 positive comments (a good ratio for the fishy!). If you score 28 goals in your first 33 games as well that would be nice!

i was one of the negative ones, but have to say i'm more encouraged having read the input of lincoln fans and particularly by what Nathan Arnold tweeted. So thanks to Nathan Arnold you can put me down as a neutral!

Not normal for me but I actually think I should retract my negative comment.
I reckon I jumped the gun and I'm now in the belief if we can get him firing on all cylinders he'll come good for us...
So, as the say, over to you Mr Green to get the fans off our butts chanting your name...

I counted 7 negative comments and 28 positive comments by the point rancido replied, and I was being a bit generous with what I considered positive, some were more neutral than actually positive. So at that point, about 25% of people had complained about a player that's yet to kick a ball and has a goal scoring record better than any striker we've signed in donkey's years.

Admittedly I thought the ratio of positive to negative was worse, but it's still incredibly negative to be moaning about a player with a decent track record before he's even played a game.

Well even if you also want to stick the boot into the fans too, get your maths right. 7 negative out of a total of 35 is 20%. 80% minimum positive is a good thing, right? God knows why you had to check (god knows why I felt the need to, only to prevent our fans all being tarred with the same brush and slandered yet again), and I think I was being more than fair with my own counting anyway. And so what if some people have reservations, let them, it's their prerogative. Some have some good points to be fair, but on the balance of things I think Matt Green could be a good signing.

This is why this club is in such a mess. Big supporters of the board or those who have close links can't wait to stick the boot in to the paying public, add fuel to the fire of mutual contempt and perpetuate a myth. And before the answer could be turned on its head re criticism of the board, let's not forget our dismal playing record over a very long period, the absolute mess the club infrastructure is in and the complete disregard the board has for the fans' voices. Fans have every right to be wary of anything the club does.. we are not North Korea FC with our group of happy clappers being forced to clap everything or we get punished..

It certainly is psychologically. If you lost 1/2 stone. Put some new clothes on and had a night out. 20 people complimented you but 3 said that actually they thought you had gained weight I know which you would remember !!!

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Well 2 of the 7 you dug out have retracted leaving a possible 5 . Green`s greatest attribute accoring to comments about him are not his goals more his team play and general work ethic this should endear him to our support. Player`s like him will always be viewed a Salford Reject before a ball is kicked that`s never been different with any other signing.

Hey, he’s only being ‘neutral’ on the whole board v fans debate. We know Rancido doesn’t only criticise the fans........

😉

Latest rumour--" We are signing  E. Foo Yung,F.Rice,Kor Marr, and C. Andy Chipz all who play for the North Korean National Team"   I must say this seems a good recipe for success and definitely wets my appetite. Well done to all concerned.

Not a good sign in an accountant 😉

And muppets like this have the cheek to question people’s ability to run a football club better than the current mob! Like I said to Fishyfishtails on another thread, they do John Fenty no favours.

What a player has done in the past whether he scored 20+ a season or 4 or 5,

He will be judged on what he does in a Town shirt,

I am sure by what I have seen of Green in  Mansfield, Lincoln and Salford shirts,

He will be a fans favourite because of his high work rate , energy and goal scoring,

He might not be a 20+ goal a season we long for but he will score enough and create a few as well.

He is a good player, good touch, high work rate, what he does need is a target man with him. His successful spells have coincided with him playing along side Rhead  - He fell out of favour with us when we changed formation, and played with 3 up front - as opposed to 4-4-2 - Cowley favoured , Andrade, Akinde and Anderson with a 10 behind them - Mainly Rowe or McCartan, when that happened there was limited playing time for Green. We got 75k for him, and effectively got Rowe on loan, who was a better fit for us - It wasn't that Green was gash or was playing badly/

Which would make our links (all be them internet rumours) with Hanson and Cook seem to make sense. Would it be a disaster if he was up top on his own?

I am not sure it would work, he can get bullied quite easy by L2 defenders. Like I said I would have kept him for last season, as he can quite easily playing on the right.

I, personally, think Green is a good signing. It is also significant that when I mentioned a negative reaction to his signing I was berated and lo and behold some of those negative posters changed their opinion. The herding instinct is very strong on this site!

Thanks for the reply, we tried it last season you see, as you probably know we were playing Thomas up on his own last season despite him not being a traditional target man. Actually he was decent at holding the ball and bringing others into play. More of a back to goal forward anyway though. I take it Green is not that type? He does not hold the ball up well etc?

I'm not Forza, I just don't get this criticising of new players who have yet to play a game yet for town. I could understand it if it was a "Lee Evans (?)" scenario, where a potential signing was an out and out toe-rag. But Green has done the business for a few seasons at this level and we really need to trust MJ in the choice of players he thinks he needs to progress us beyond this level. Black_and_white_bear posted a similarities post to mine yet wasn't quoted once! It doesn't bother me as I'm 71 years old and it's all water off a ducks back to me but I do get the impression that some posters get "shot down" straight away by certain members of the "Fishy Clique". Meanwhile I'm just happy getting drunk in Bulgaria and looking forward to another season watching my beloved Town, whoever they sign. Oh and when I get back on Sunday I will be straight into the club Monday to renew my St, and that has got fook all to do with new shirts, new signings, whatever floodlights are fitted or the colour of the refurbished khazi. I laugh at these posters whose allegiance depends on x, y, or z - Town fans, my arce!!!

Not sure if there's much in the James Hanson rumour, but he would be a good signing - and a good partner for Green - in a 4-4-2 (or whatever system we can play with two strikers).

A good friend of mine is a Bradford fan and he speaks very highly of Hanson as a person as well as a player. Not the most mobile now but has a good football brain, hangs in the air, makes life difficult for defenders and can make the ball stick up top.

Not a too dissimilar description to Andy Cook, really, except Hanson might be more realistic or affordable.

Bradford City fan here.....

Hanson’s days are long gone. He suffers with injuries and quite frankly, he’s scored ten times in his last nearly 90 appearances.

When Sheff United came in for him a few seasons back, they offered us a deal worth just over £200k and we snapped their hands off.

We used to pay him circa £5k per week. Sheff Utd were paying him £8k per week; and even at Wimbledon he’s earning a decent wedge.

He’ll command at least £2.5k-£3k per week in L2, and I’m sure there are better options now at this level.

He also wouldn’t complement Matt Green, either.

Goal! Lincoln City 2, Grimsby Town 0. Matt Green (Lincoln City) right footed shot from very close range to the centre of the goal. Assisted by Elliott Whitehouse.

Could do with a bit of this for us. Geen goal, Whitehouse assist.

Good authority he's taking a very very big pay cut to join us if it happens. I also think your wrong on the fact he wouldn't compliment Green very well, Green plays better in a two with a big man. Mansfield he had Ross Dyer and Nick Wright. Lincoln he had Matt Rhead.. so I think Hanson and Green would be a very good front two.

He also wouldn’t complement Matt Green, either.

You are obviously not aware of the "positive posts only" rule we have here on the fishy. Now this will be counted as "yet another" caustic comment.

Secondly why do think he would not complement Green?

Good authority he's taking a very very big pay cut to join us if it happens. I also think your wrong on the fact he wouldn't compliment Green very well, Green plays better in a two with a big man. Mansfield he had Ross Dyer and Nick Wright. Lincoln he had Matt Rhead.. so I think Hanson and Green would be a very good front two.

It begs the question why he would want to take a big pay cut to play in the league below, when he’s settled in West London and enjoying his time at Wimbledon - just saying.

I just wouldn’t put Green in that category of being a mobile striker, who covers every blade of grass. I always had him down as a targetman-type, myself.

See the Hanson and Nahki Wells partnership we had the last time we were down here, and you’ll understand what I mean by playing to Hanson’s strengths.

We must watch a different Matt Green when he plays then because he definitely is a hard working forward and i'd describe him as more of a Nahki Wells than a James Hanson of the two. He clearly isn't settled in West London if he's willing to take a pay cut to return close to home.. spent all of his career up north bar Wimbledon.

Okay mate, I’m not here for a slanging match - I really don’t care what Hanson does or who he might sign for.

But money does dictate - especially for an ageing, out of form striker whose being paid a decent salary in the league above. I can only presume Wimbledon will cover the shortfall - but they’re skint.

You know him better than us, of course...but at 31 is he really now classed as an 'ageing' striker? And for someone who struggles with injuries, he still played 30 games last season...

Well, for the wage he’ll demand, you won’t see a great return for your money IMO.

As mentioned, he hardly had a great scoring record when he was half alright, but ten goals in his last 90 appearances should tell you all you need to know; and as you’ve just alluded to, half of them came last season.

Good option to bring on late in the game.

Well I hope he wouldn't be as disappointing as Charlie Wyke has proved to be.

A quick look at the Wimbledon message-board (a strange format) has a few comments appreciating Hanson's contribution to their recent "great escape" while suggesting that it's probably time to move on.

Re Hanson and queenie’s Wimbledon wage comment: it’s a lot cheaper living in Lincs than SW London.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Feel like A big forward in the Hanson mould is exactly what we were missing last season. A big presence to hold the ball up, bully and occupy defenders, leaving another striker or attacking midfielder to bomb on and put the ball in the net.

I really don’t care about his goal scoring record...that’s obviously not where his strengths lie and never has been by the looks of it. We mention them time and time again, but Rees, Livvo, Woods were not big goalscorers, but they were brilliant forward players.

Also would be an added threat from set pieces, I seen a few highlights of him mainly on tv, and has scored a few with his head.

It would not surprise me if we are wrong about the manager's priorities. He may well decide there are enough forwards at the club now with five without signing anymore. Using Green with one of Cardwell, Cook, Rose or Vernam might be his first selection.

Perhaps the next signing might be somebody to create chances, that goalscoring midfielder we need.
