England awarded a penalty by VAR, bit harsh if you ask me but England 1-0 Scotland

I have been watching a few games in this world cup  ........... and we would struggle against some of these sides

Batch, K.Moore, Waters, Wiggington, Crombie, Brolly, Ford, Drinkell, Mitchell, Cumming, Kilmore. D.Moore, Stone, Liddell. ....1979/80..... now that WAS a team.

Bit silly tbh.
Plenty of womens national sides beaten by U16/17 mens teams.

England women have been watching the England men play.  Give a poor ball away that immediately concedes a goal.  2-1 England after 81 mins. Need to hold on after that bad error.

Remember watching a women’s international at Blundell Park about 20 years ago. England v Netherlands if memory serves, and the standard was absolutely dreadful. There’s some way to go, but it’s improved massively since then.

As much as I don't mind watching the women play just for the competition itself, I always think if these are the best players in their respective countries, further down the ladder, there must be some that are really poor?

I'm not saying that there aren't some very technically gifted players on show - there are some very competent individuals but in general it just seems to me that there are also a lot of also-rans

Hey ho... an England win to start off with, so fingers crossed they go on and do themselves & the country proud

If England are one of the favourites (which I doubt - probably just hype to get people watching) then the standard leaves a lot to be desired.

If the same standard of men’s football got the same coverage then we could look forward to seeing the Northern League live on a the box. If not Clee’s level.

No it’s because the women have a genuine chance of winning it , on the other hand our men are forced to play a way they can’t really do and won’t win f all

Watched the women last night, Mens game eng v Scots would be a sell out in a euro or world finals last night half the stands were empty yet a former wimmin footballer was whinging the other day about how unfair it was that they got less prize money than the men😅

The prize money (just like the wages) in both mens and womens football will surely be related to the income it generates.  As the womens game get more publicity and increases in popularity I would expect to see a rise in both.  If (and I personally don't see it happening soon) a woman plays professionally for a league, I would sincerely hope she would on a wage equivalent of her male counterparts.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

The women's game has got a long way to go, but when you consider how much the quality has improved in even 5 years, there's a bright future.

I got back from a weekend in  northern France early this morning having been to a couple of games, not England unfortunately  as Nice was too far away. It's a friendly tournament, the locals were very welcoming and I did manage to get a couple of photo's of my GTFC flag at the games of course - but not on telly. Anyone who thinks that it's going to be of a similar standard to the men is missing the point. This is why it only costs Nine euro's to get a sensible seat and the costs in the area doesn't go through the roof as it does when I have had the "pleasure" of watching England men play away. Ladies football has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and the new GTFC ladies team is fantastic news. My daughter (ST holder at BP) loves it that the women are getting more and more coverage. I'm not going to go all Steve Wraith on this but if 50% of the population are getting more involved in football that can't be a bad thing.

Absolutely ridiculous coverage from the BBC.

Radio 4 sports bulletin at 8.25am consisted entirely of the women's football and an interview with some wittering chap about the game yesterday.

Not a mention of

1) F1 and the controversy around Hamilton's win
2) Australia v India cricket world cup
3) England men's game
4) Mcilroy winning a golf tournament over the pond with a last round of 61
5) Nadal winning a record 12th French Open

But we are all wrong:
The BBC says it was a massive success. Repeat - A MASSIVE SUCCESS.

Yeah but
1) who gives a excrement about men going round and round the block in noisy boy racers
2) who gives a excrement about which former colony wins at bat and ball
3) we won on penalties against who???!!! 1000 years of civilisation and all they can come up with is the cuckoo clock, and we’re supposed to be excited about a bunch of tattooed millionaires beating them at the 13th hour
4) who gives a excrement about Scottish bat and ball games
5) who gives a excrement about bat and ballgames played by posh people. With bats that have holes in them.

BBC have been universally panned for their lack of diversity, equality, being ageist, etc etc over recent years so now they have gone to the other end of the spectrum and over compensate at every opportunity.
Havn't seen much of the Womens World Cup coverage but i did notice during a USA game the other night that they had a female presenter and three female pundits on the progamme.....fair enough, all of them rightfully there as they are former players and have their insights but how come there wasnt a guy on the panel....women get on match of the day etc so why not the other way round ?

I think it's cool that women are now more into football, but the BBC really are annoying me over it.  They are effectively promoting the tournament as being the equal of the men's game, but it is 100 years behind it, so it's really no comparison.  In a way, it's too late.

The BBC should just admit that they spend their vast sums of money poorly, and the women's World Cup is one of the few things they can afford.  If the beeb actually stopped funding their many radio stations and paying their presenters too much, then they could afford ALL the England men's games, some live Premier League games, maybe the Champions League, the Cricket World Cup etc., but they're stuck with the women's game as there's nothing left after SKY and BT have taken them.

The women's game will never have the male tribalism built up over 150 years, so it will lack true supporters.  It's good to see it improving, but let's not start thinking it's important to most viewers.

I'd also like to point out some positives (and further negatives) of women's in the game.  I think female officials in the men's game are a positive, and certainly some female tv presenters are top notch (Gaby Logan, for example, and some of the female Sky Sports presenters are better than the men), but female commentators do NOT work - their voices are usually too high pitched!  I'm not being sexist here.  And chucking in token ex-players for the punditry of the men's game, like Alex Scott, really isn't necessary.  It's a bit like the FA insisting that football clubs HAVE to now interview minority applicants - the way I see it is, if they're good enough, then great, but don't give people jobs to tick boxes.  Having a token woman to sit beside Jamie Redknapp to have a balance is just daft, and could actually be seen as a little insulting.

No doubt I'm being a bit too old school for some, here.

Cant see it happening and wouldent want to either.Males are stronger than females and performances will reflect that.Think it stems right back to nature where the males go out and hunt and the females look after the children.Look at the olympics for one in ancient Rome. All about proving oneself in who was the fittest/strongest male

Don’t go quoting nature in male/female relations. You never know where it might end. Black widow spiders eat the male after sex, so is that what should happen with humans?

Lionesses do most of the hunting. One male gets to mate with most of the females and the others don’t get much chance. You want that to happen (assuming you’re not the alpha male)

The BBC would never have the money to bid for the premier league, no matter how much they pay Graham Norton et al.

True, but a bundle of half a dozen live games a season on terrestrial doesn’t sound an impossibility, and they’d get huge ratings.

Having a token woman to sit beside Jamie Redknapp to have a balance is just daft, and could actually be seen as a little insulting.

No doubt I'm being a bit too old school for some, here.

The main thing that's balanced by her sitting next to Jamie Redknapp is intelligence!

Ooh, harsh! I just don’t think an ex player from the women’s game can be an authority on the men’s game, and this absolutely works both ways.

Couldn't resist!

I think as long as they know their stuff and don't just state the obvious, it doesn't really matter if they're an ex player or not (whether male or female). The journo types who used to do the (bafflingly cancelled) European football show on bt were great.

Cricket is on Bet365 website if you have an account. Just deposit a fiver or something.

Womens World Cup all free on BBC.

Thanks! I might not have bothered but for some chat with old colleagues last night who were quite animated about VAR etc.
Just watching the anthems now.  Blimey!

Thanks, I subsist on highlights for all but Town games. Season ticket  and 7 to 10 away days saps the budget. Might be an odd way to look at it but I'd rather drive to a reserve game  than pay for the Prem.!

I thought the Japanese goal against Scotland( the shot) was an extremely good piece of football, the way the Jap hit it its power and swerve, marvellous, and the way the Scotch lass soared through the air and just about got a hand to it, a bit Gordon Banks, ok, the goalie was pure cr@p, if a male goalie had let that in he would have been castigated, but as it's a woman not a word!!

I only found out recently that saying ‘China Man’ is also a no-no nowadays, apparently. I’m so old I still don’t understand why.

On average. They overlap - some women have higher levels than some men.

Having said that, I think the current level of women's football is a lot lower than men's.

PS I think you mean 'higher' not more.

No - men have more testosterone levels and women have higher a concentration of brain cells. Men and women have exactly the same amount of cells but women have smaller brains. It’s science so don’t argue it.

Anyone watching the England game when the ball hit the ref so she stopped the game and gave an uncontested drop ball to Japan?

Has this come into all football where when the ref gets in the way, they stop the game and restart with an uncontested drop ball?

have to disagree...the cheating Jock keeper left the line and therefore gained an advantage...rightly brought back for a re-take.....

I agree with you, listening to the moaning Scottish commentator that was crying it was something new. The only thing new about it is that a camera is watching the keeper and if you do it you get booked, it has long been the case goalkeepers should not move forward off the line.

The Premier League will not use video assistant referees in 2019-20 to rule on goalkeepers moving off their line to save a penalty.

Ah that must be where Bobby Cumming’s “s”went to. I have it on good authority he’s been looking for it for years.

I enjoyed USA v Sweden. Makes a difference when the players can kick the ball further than the 18 yard line. Played at a good tempo throughout and by and large good decision making by the players - clearly more athletic and more intelligent than most. Dodgy VAR decision on the Yanks second goal - even the American pundit (Hope ?) agreed.

Yeah that's offside for me.  I think Fifa /uefa will use VAR at every opportunity....didnt they give a pen for an accident that happen 10 mins earlier?

Hopefully the FA will only be using it for key decisions.

Should only be used for did it/didn’t it cross the line decisions. Anything else has too much interpretation to make any real improvements in decisions. They missed the offside originally and they still missed it with the benefit of video - no less offside than the one the other day where the player was judged offside because her hand was offside.

All I’ve heard about this competition is that the matches are played in good spirit and there’s no diving and surrounding the ref. The first match I see Cameroon look like they might walk off twice and disputing video evidence.

Completely agree. Yes we probably get the right decision most of the time, but to what cost? The entertainment value decreases massively for a lot of people, especially young ones just learning about the game. I was watching this game with my 4 year old, then VAR interrupted, he couldn’t understand what was going on, asked why they’ve stopped playing and he’s now disappeared to his room to play because he’s bored of it.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

The Cameroon player had all of a toe of her boot offside - bloody ridiculous! That is not what the offside law was designed for. They'll call for VAR on the coin toss next!

Use goalline technology but sod all this VAR nonsense.

Even if we do end up with the correct decision to the letter of the law it's taking a hell of a lot of enjoyment away from the game for me.

It is bloody ridiculous - some games you might find that the stoppages are more than the playing time. If it ever gets to our level and we are all cheering a winning goal in a Wembley play off final only for it to be snatched away because of an offside toe.

Top strikers who play on the shoulder of the last man are going to be hesitant now aren't they - previously they might get away with being 3 inches offside.

As you say, confine it to goal line technology and let the game and all its human mistakes (players and refs) flow.

The problem with VAR is that it will only chalk off goals and not create them, hence there will be fewer goals per game in the future, but goals are what the game is about, would you rather whatch a 0-0 or a 4-4 draw.

Totally agree.

Although on this occasion the decisions benefited England, that game was totally ruined by VAR.

Haven’t seen many games and missed this one, but what I have seen have been played in a good spirit. And US-Sweden and Oz-Norway were both played at a high tempo putting many men’s games to shame.

Heard the same sort of stuff in the pub watching the game, sexual innuendos all the time.

I'm no prude but I think the women's game deserves a bit more respect, I wish I could have played that well when I played.

Technology is here to stay and yes games will be longer because of it. The decisions will always be argued if it doesn't go your way ,but will you moan about VAR  if the opposite happens. The real problem is the refs. Cameroon should have had 10 yellow cards and at least one sending off. They brought the game into disrepute and the ref let them them do it.

It's been a good tournament and some great football technically. Cameroon played like an under 10's team under the watchful eyes of overbearing parents though, and took the game back some distance. Ref was weak and not good enough for that level, but well done to England for thorough professionalism throughout.

well we wont have to put it up with it any time soon , unless we draw a prem team in the cup again, so hopefully by the time it either filters down or we go up to a level where it is used they will have figured out how to use it efficiently and effectively .

So where do we stop? Do we bring every goal back to the build up play in case the ref missed a foul? Do we use it for a foul throw that leads to a goal? How far back do you go as every single thing that happens in a game affects the rest of it.?

It is a game played and refereed by human beings, and if we are not careful we will take the whole spontaneity out of it. You watch - soon the fans at Premier League games will start postponing their celebrations after a winning goal in case it is referred to VAR and where is the fun in that?

In any event I don't think a player whose toe is offside is in the spirit of the game at all.

Heard the same sort of stuff in the pub watching the game, sexual innuendos all the time.

I'm no prude but I think the women's game deserves a bit more respect, I wish I could have played that well when I played.

I wasn't talking about the women's game... I was going on about women and mud!

FFS Everybody seems offended about something these days.... ban all the Carry On films!

Here we go again.

Please can we have just one game where the referee and her assistants make all the decisions (right or wrong) otherwise why the intercourse are they there.

The assistants in particular have had virtually all their tasks taken away, offsides aren't flagged until the 'play' in which it might have occurred has finished. As for linesmen (or women) indicating penalties it just doesn't happen any more I wonder if any of them even know how a linesperson should signal a penno.

Do we need officials on the pitch at all?

England need to improve their passing to beat a Norway.  Long passes also invariably concede possession.

Third goal from the corner was well-worked by the 2 Liverpool players.  Very quick-thinking.  Very similar to the goal Liverpool score at home to Barca.

Great team goal by the Crapauds*

Another entertaining game. Glad France won cos Brazil looked like they were a bit inclined to follow their men’s attitude and whinge and roll too much (though not half as bad).

Not much of the little cheats that most men’s teams pull either like stealing several yards on a throw in or ‘re-positioning’ the ball on a free kick the odd yard forward. Brazil, again, more likely to do this than others.

I think the reason VAR has been highlighted in this tournament has a lot to do with the standard of the officials.

This has resulted in more incorrect decision and therefore the need to use VAR more fequently.

I must be bored if I'm reading a page of this thread, perhaps will watch the final if England get there, maybe the semi. But when I've flicked through the channels and seen it briefly the fare on offer has been atrocious - no speed or power.

Im all for women developing the game and far from sexist but a bit overkill how it's been thrust on us. For example the women on panels commenting on the mens game, no offence but they seem pretty clueless in the main.

And this wanting parity with the wages of the men is ridiculous. When they generate the same massive global interest, attendances and viewing figures then yes of course. But that way off, it's just nowhere near as exciting or entertaining.

"Sweden's women's national football team suffered a crushing defeat during a friendly in Stockholm on Tuesday, with the country's top female players finding themselves shutout by an undermanned local boys team."

"What happened to girl power? Australia's national women's soccer team the Matildas lose 7-0 to an under FIFTEENS boys' side"

Way off, way way off.

Lets remember we are watching women playing football,

They are not as strong or as fast as men,

BUT

I have enjoyed watching most of the games apart from VAR taking so long and the dirty tactics of Cameroon against us yesterday.

How far will England go ? well I think it will be tight against Norway but can see us beating them with another White goal who is very good at this level.

Semi final will be against the USA who unlike their men are a force to be reckoned with so a 3rd placed is the best we can hope for.

I love watching footy at any level even Thurston in the local Sunday league you just have to expect mistakes will be made at any level  so far England women tend to start giving the ball away  far too much in the 2nd half of games so they need to improve on that.

I agree that one of the Brazilian players spent far too much time in make up before the game.

I totally agree Pete I am enjoying it immensely

I am hoping for a USA or France v Holland final I think the Dutch might give either of them a good game

Sadly there is a distinct shortage of beautiful women (and large chests) these days I recall many years ago when Norway were the best in the world a lot of their players were absolutely gorgeous

Don't get me wrong There are still a lot of lady players that I wouldn't climb over to get to Pete but they appear, as their game has improved and got more professional, to have become less feminine and a lot more, how can I put it, butch hardened

I think we'll get past Norway but the US look a class above every other team in the tournament.  They have loads of pace and strength and transition quickly through the midfield.  We look good, but unfortunately I still feel that (like our men's team) we still have a defensive error or two in us, struggle to move the ball through midfield as fluently, and might not be able to kill off the better sides when we are on top.

Loving the tournament though and the ladies' game has really come on even since the last world cup.  This trend will only continue as the ladies' club game in Europe in particular continues to expand.

Wouldn’t disagree with any of that HH.

I came into this tournament expecting it to be of a lower standard and not to be entertained, based on previous tournaments.

I've watched quite a few of the games and to be honest I've enjoyed them for what they are....

I don't know which female pundit it was who said yesterday that the women's game is advancing quickly... I don't dispute that but then she said it is only about 20 years behind the men's game.

Really?? If she seriously believes that then I think someone should have a word about who is out there representing their sport with such hype

Almost as bad as SKY with their overbearing views of the men's game since 1992

I’m sick of how far VAR is extending into the game! Sick of hearing “the forward is offside but the flag will stay down for now”.....no! Put the bloody flag up if the player is offside FFS! What is the point of having a linesman/woman anymore

The obvious reason they don't put the flag up until after is that a team could then argue that they stopped playing when they saw the flag. I know that you play to the whistle but if the flag doesn't go up until the ball is in the net then this argument isn't relevant.

Daft I know, but that's the way it's going now.

Sadly there is a distinct shortage of beautiful women (and large chests) these days I recall many years ago when Norway were the best in the world a lot of their players were absolutely gorgeous

Come on Swin, we're talking about the womens football, no need to bring the Norwegian men in to the conversation.

Kingston: did a Google search after mate of mine spoke about international womens teams getting spanked by low-level mens. Just quoted the first couple I see

If you actually read the articles listed the true picture is not as simple as ‘boys better than women at football’. Not really competitive matches, not full women’s squad etc, articles from years ago.

As ever ‘ the truth is rarely pure and never simple ‘

More bloody penalties. Totally sick of it, getting like the mens WC last year when the Golden Boot was won on pennos. Don't know why they just don't have a penalty shoot out to start with, save a couple of hours

Agreed.

VAR for penalties is absolute w@nk. That second USA one was impossible to judge on VAR.

Anything other than binary stuff like did it cross the line is a shambles. Hopefully the mess they’ve made in this World Cup will kill off the few oddballs still in favour of it.

Read a fair bit of a few articles Kingston without reading all (or the dates) , tbh not particularly interested just remembered a friend saying about international women getting smashed by low level men in a recent conversation. So quickly looked up without remembering the exact match and cited a few examples. Just seen another - the mighty USA losing 5-2 to Dallas Under 15's in 2017.

Without wanting to appear anti-womens football (I'm not, GTFC ladies for example is a great thing and especially if I had a daughter it would be - great women can have that opportunity now), it just doesn't excite me the same way. It's basically like watching 15 year olds who lack the power from being a man yet, perhaps just with a bit more brains for the more senior players (experience obviously).

It's hard enough to keep up with the mens game with my busy lifestyle and tbh sometimes give up trying, apart from GTFC of course. So for me, I just can't dedicate the time to become a statto or knowledgeable of an entire seperate mass of clubs, players, entities etc and have zero motivation to do so either.

Some people are just football, football, football so happily feast on more and more and fair enough if that's the case for them.

Good on the ladies, it's good their game growing -although (selfishly) I find the chatter about it boring taking up airtime on talksport etc when just want to hear about the mens game I love.

I hear the standard has increased drastically in recent years so good on them, but as for parity on wages with men put the finest ladies in a mens team and see if they can cut it. Chewed up and spat out no doubt.

All that being said if England reach the latter latter stages I may tune in and maybe can be won over a little.

Could a female Pele or Maradona run rings around the men with so much skill the lack of physical attributes matter little? That would be interesting to see if ever such an amazing talent cropped up and I'd happily eat my hat.

Agree on the comparison with boys football Rik for a lot of games. I came into this tournament expecting to be underwhelmed and some games I have been. The best teams are entertaining though IMO. Also completely agree on football over saturation/only being able to cope with so much England/Town disappointment (why I always turn 6 Nations off when England are losing!).

As for wages parity. I think it would be a good idea at the elite level. The men earn far too much 😀

People who expect the women to be as good as the men are a bit deluded,

When you watch a game of footy it can be enjoyable when you except  the standard they play at,

Whether its the best men in the world down to watching non league,  women or schoolboy teams. I enjoy  just watching the game regardless of the standard.

Italy v China a very enjoyable game so far.

Italy have been fantastic. Only weakness seems to be the keeper which seems to be a common theme. I saw a proposal to make the goals smaller for womens' football which could work.

How the hell that Japanese girl could have got her arm out of the way when the ball is blasted at her from less than 2 yards I will never know. Not only was a penalty then given but she was then yellow carded. If that was a penalty then the laws need changing. I am no referee but surely there has to be some sort of intention regarding handball. Crazy in my view.

Rant over, now for the red crosses!!!!

Japan were outstanding in the second-half,as they were against England.  Feel for them. If they could only take their chances.

The Netherlands were all at sea.  Did not know when and where to move to, and some could not be bothered.  Panicked at times.  Strange.

I haven't seen the incident, but in general it is getting daft.

Players are now trying to challenge in the box with their hands behind their backs, in case the ball accidentally strikes the hand.

When the laws were made, they were to prevent players deliberately gaining an advantage by cheating. We are now in a position were the ball hits a hand accidentally and its a penalty, so in effect a goal. We now have the offside law being interpreted that a toe or an arm being offside is enough to prevent a goalscoring opportunity. The laws were not made for that, and the current interpretation of them is not in the spirit of the game.

Agree with Grim on the penalty decision. Daft rule. It wasn’t really her arm either. More the armpit area.

HT  Norway 0-2 England

Yeah under the new rules Norway should probably have had a penalty but we also hit the post.

Great scenes a Glastonbury when England scored.

These days it's handball (apparently although the commentator has just said not because it hit the leg first) and penalty but she clearly couldn't get out the way... Anyway I'm genuinely really enjoying watching the lionesses, apart from the last world cup it's the first time I've really watched a team religiously through a tournament

England do the difficult very well.  Clinical in front of goal.  Our energy levels are excellent.  The simple not done well.  Norway could be 3-3 in the 5 mins from our own errors.

Poor passing must cost us in the next game - or final.

Missed first half. Looked good pressing Norway when they had the ball in their half. Good going forward and some great last ditch defending- if only they hadn’t put themselves in that position in the first place.

Much better than in the Japan game. So on the right trajectory Norway are a good side so this was an impressive win (I expected it to be much closer).

Entertaining game just now. Both strong sides, especially the Yanks. But if we get st them and get as many chances as ‘the France’ did I reckon we’ll score more. Starting to believe we might just beat them.

Should be an interesting game between England and USA in the semis but England need to cut out the lapses in concentration at the back if they are to stand any chance, the US will pinch them.

I think that England have a very good against the USA.  We are hungry for success.  Not impressed by the USA last night.  First time that I have watched them and expected more quality from them as the number 1 team.  The French pressed them most of the game but could not finish.  The standard of USA passing was poor.  We can benefit from their sloppy passing,

England recently beat the USA after it ended 2-2 so you never know they seem to rely a lot on rappinoe.

Great free kick by the Clogettes and finished off with a good header.

Big game tonight against the USA, I'll be watching.

Let's hope we can do it and make history by reaching the Final.

Frantic start! How good is Lucy Bronze at RB by the way, been outstanding all tournament.

No pressure at all by the defender on the cross or previous pass.
Cross was pinpoint but a really simple goal.

A good thing I have noticed is the lack of cheating, diving etc, I assume as the women get more professional those traits will start to surface, then both men's and women's football will be ruined, thanks FIFA, EUFA, premier league etc for ruining the beautiful game.

Agree. The yank women go down far more easily than ours.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Oh well. The better side won. England didn't play their best (too many punts forward) and still made too many unforced errors. Lost it mentally towards the end - Yanks stronger mentally and physically.

The USA were the better team.  Frustrating that we could have made it 2-2 though.  Another poor penalty.  We can’t pass as well as the other top teams.  Some poor throw-ins as well.

England teams can’t seem to get to finals.

Definitely.
Need to take your chances, horrendous penalty.
USA far superior in most areas.

Because it was offside.
First decision to go against them.
Given a VAR reprieve with a penalty which probably won't have been awarded.

It is not irrelevent to anyone who loves football. If we all just sit back and say oh that is what VAR says so it must be right it will kill the game. The offside rule was introduced to stop players cheating not hairline decisions like that. Alll the build up play and the finish all ruined by an offside toe. Pathetic.

In that instance & according to the rules its offside.
Whether it should be will always be up for debate.
However no amount of input from fans will alter anything.

but England got past Cameroon with the aid of VAR.....cant have it both ways.

St Georges Park should pay the groundsman to paint some penalty spots on the goals there, then England might be able to practice penalties.

Technically by the law offside but never a ‘clear and obvious error ‘. VAR will kill football with decisions like that.

Puddy at Wembley, Scott Neilson at Gateshead, Challinor on Pringle are clear and obvious errors, one toe offside with bodies level is not.

Yes but that isn't the current offside rule.
So it's offside according to the current law's.
Whether we feel that's correct is and will be alwsys up for debate.

That penalty......ffs.

Score that and Im certain they would have gone on and won that game.

Criticism has to be levelled at Neville and the coaches, they were giving the ball away from match one, and that was never eradicated.

But the fact that we are all a bit drunk off at losing, suggests that we were a lot more interested than we  let on at the outset.

VAR will always check offside in the lead up to a goal.
Technically its 100% accurate unlike a penalty appeal or handball which may be debatable.
Pity it ruins the celebrations but fans won't have say in its introduction or implementation.

but England got past Cameroon with the aid of VAR.....cant have it both ways.

St Georges Park should pay the groundsman to paint some penalty spots on the goals there, then England might be able to practice penalties.

I don't want it both ways. VAR will kill the game if it keeps overriding very marginal decisions like that. They are treating it like a photograph to decide a horse race - offside by a nose.

VAR should stick to goal-line technology.

As I have written in a previous comment on VAR, although the decisions are correct, over the long run, say a season there will be less goals scored (allowed) then pre VAR, but that is the price of technology.

What they need to do with VAR is the sort of Umpires call thing that they have in cricket. If it is a really close decision, then you go with the original call from the referee, even if microscopically offside. Shouldn't have been offside (in the spirit of the game) and was a penalty, although it wasn't obvious in real time. If the goal had been given and the penalty denied, it would have been a fairer outcome.

Wasn't watching too closely, but the Yanks were certainly chucking themselves to the ground a lot to win fouls. Some very clumsy challenges from England, however and it could have been a straight red. The lass who got sent off looked a bit cumbersome to me and struggled against the greater pace of the Yanks.

The passing was odd for me as we mixed up some very good and positive passing and crossing with lots of absolute dross with passes which were hopelessly miscued or underhit. You can't give the opposition possession so easily and so often if they are any good. Sort of reminds me of the men's team from 20-odd years ago. That's where the women need to improve for the next tournament.

Lets go the whole hog and don't bother with the actual game - just use a computer simulation to decide the outcome and be done with it.

If we are going to use VAR to make sure we get all the "correct decisions" then do away with the ref as well while we are at it. He/she being human will make mistakes. Players make mistakes. Either we have no mistakes whatsoever or we allow the game to continue to thrive without the VAR cancer.

But VAR would still make errors because handballs, simulation & penalty awards to name a few are non definitive and will always bring a different of opinion.

Yes but that isn't the current offside rule.
So it's offside according to the current law's.
Whether we feel that's correct is and will be alwsys up for debate.

I agree, it’s the law that’s wrong.

I was shocked when one of the pundits was reviewing the Yanks’ goal when Lucy Bronze was caught out. I thought ‘Lucy’s body shape was all wrong’ was not a very sisterly thing to say. 😀

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

Have to agree... As daft as it sounds getting every decision right is ruining the game, mainly because of the time and waiting around to find out the decision... With the amount of extra time that's now going to be played in most VAR games fans need to consider their train times if they travel to games that way...

A nephew of mine worked on "VAR" at the very start and initially it was to be brought in for " did it cross the line or didn't it " and should have stayed there. We are now getting statistics for everything-how many completed passes, whether 2 metre tip taps or defence splitting through balls-it's all there FFS. Soon it will be " 33% of the England team are wearing green boots-15% red but only half are made in Panama. The Panama Canal isn't a real canal as we know it, made up of lakes etc. Gary , do you know that the average wage in Panama is a 1000'th of yours.   The game ends there and we are sorry we didn't have time to show you any of the 5 goals Grimsbee scored against Man. City.

Caught it from the 46th minute with England 2-1 down and have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the athletiscm and skill levels on show - massive advancements on the last time I tuned in. Quite liked the more delicate nature of the ladies, its a different game and should be accepted as such. By the 75th minute I was thoroughly enthralled egging The Lionesses on.

It's gutting to see such a classy goal disallowed but for me the decision was quick and I had no problem with VAR in the second half. It adds a layer of drama for me, though it might be tougher to take actually being in the stands stood waiting about. It's here to stay and I think it's important the right decisions are made in big moments, it will surely iron itself out over time.

For the offside I immediately thought offside on seeing the initial replay, sadly its the law which is wrong right now which not VARs fault. We should go back to giving a bit of leeway to the attackers such as the 'clear daylight' old rule or similar not if half a big toe is in front of the defender it's no goal. And watching the referee dissecting the replays from all angles for the penalty while being able to see what she was watching was nail biting entertainment (for me). But again sat in the stands that would be more frustrating.

Never mind the stands, I find sitting in the chair waiting for VAR an annoyance of the first order. I want to see the ball in play, that's why the game is called football not "let's all get excited waiting for the VAR-ball". The game is the thing that's exciting not some half-@rsed technology. If I want that I'll buy a Play Station.

I thought they was only going to use VAR when a clear and obvious error by the ref was made,

Whites big toe does not construct a minor error never mind a clear and obvious one,

VAR  should be used as it was intended to do and only stop the game when it is clear like when Maradona scored with his hand or Lampard's shot was a foot over the line  otherwise it will ruin our great game.

re VAR I've always been a bit of a Luddite but to my mind it's yet another manifestation of what I see everywhere these days (especially at work), which is that if something is possible via the use of technology then it's always seen as necessarily a good thing to implement, which in my experience it often isn't. It's often balderdash.

We are destined to a fool's fate that deserves to be mocked.

It's the law of unintended consequences striking again.

Did the powers that be really want the game to be stopped minutes on end and goals disallowed because of an offside toe?

The trade-off between getting some decisions correct after endless viewings are not worth the slowing of the game and the controversy that VAR is bringing to each major game.

The problem is though that the problem makers do not see it as a problem! To them it is a minor glitch, a pothole on the road to full technological coverage and monitoring of the rules.

Rick thinks football will go from strength to strength regardless. It might have the same name but it will not be football. Just as women’s football is not football, it is “women’s football” and all the pretence in the world by the BBC and Lineker will not change either of these things. If VAR continues as it is now it will grow like Topsy.

What happened to being level? There should be clear daylight between players, it’s preposterous.

But the modern game is played with finer margins now. I don't know why anyone should moan because a toe was off-side. If it was any part of the body then it is off side. There has been photo finishes in horse racing for over 60 years and if a horse wins by even a nose then it has won. It's the same with athletics in track events when a runner will try to thrust their upper body forward so it crosses the line first. VAR is here to stay and as long as it is done quickly then I have no problem with it. It's called progress.

No it’s called “new” which is not necessarily synonymous with “progress”. I have no complaints about the idea of technology to do something that needs to be addressed in football, or any other walk of life in fact. The problem arises when the technology becomes an end in itself simply because it can do something. Then that changes the nature of the game instead of enhancing it. This is the tail wagging the dog. We don’t need tech for offsides, forget that, we just need a sensible offside law.

I wrote a massive long reply but lost it so bollox to doing again. Basically, with the tight margins and the massive effect a wrong or right decision could make, it so important to get things right. No more Maradona hand of God incidents that could write history wrongly and even cause long term knock on repercussions for the wrongly adjudged party.

Could range from the wrong nation lifting the World Cup to a Club getting relegated and struggling to recover. The knock on effects for many many years could be massive in either case.

Bet we will if the toe of his boot or his hand is ruled offside.
You really can't tell me that a minute bit of a player (toe, arm, knee etc) being 'Offside' is what the rule is really about. Surely there has to be a clear advantage in the shape of a large part of the attacker being beyond the last defender.
My concern is that VAR on offsides using such small parts of the player will totally do away with being 'level' and therefore onside. Given the closeup and slowdown of the film there will never be an exact 'level' How many dead heats are there in racing these days?

The England cricket team today reached the World Cup semi-final then

Trouble is we all know what has happened to England teams when they reach the semis recently

Indeed.      My Mrs new nickname for me is Mr England’

I have trouble getting further than a semi.  😊

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

You have made the perfect argument for banning var. No game should be decided by an offside toe.

That’s the problem with using var for offsides. They have to have a set rule and stick by it so if a toe is offside by the law then they have to give it offside. The rules have to be the same for everyone and not subjective e.g. if a toe is acceptable and not offside, then is the foot or how much of the foot etc.

I do think var is the right thing for diving, penalties, sendings off etc, but at the moment it should not be used for offside as it is impossible to ‘give the benefit of the doubt’ to the attacking player and will therefore result in less goals from open play.

Saying that, wIth the new handball rule the game is moving towards a penalty shoot out over 90 minutes so that will be giving us 10-9 score lines. Next rule is to allow clubs to bring on a specialist penalty taker each time they have one.

It will change the game and not for the better. Strikers will stop trying to play off the shoulder or at least won’t gamble as much because there will be no point when you only need your foreskin to be offside for the goal to be disallowed. So we’ll get less one on ones and less goals, two of the best things in football. It’s already been shown to make the atmosphere a lot worse, losing the spontaneity and excitement that a goal should bring.

Some of the best bits of football in my opinion are when a clear or perceived error by the ref goes against Town in an important game. It cranks the atmosphere up in the stands and that often translates to a feistier game too which is more entertaining. I love it and ultimately I go to the game to be entertained. We’ve been on the end of some shocking decisions (Bristol Rovers keeper anyone?) but I’m sure we’ve benefited from some as well. And so what? It’s a sport, not life or death. And if the entertainment valued is diminished in the quest to make sure everything is exactly right then in my opinion it’s not worth it. Just because we can do it, doesn’t mean we should. That’s before we even get in to the argument about football fouls being subjective so even when it is used it’s often controversial. So you basically make the game worse without actually getting a benefit from it.

In summary, VAR is shite.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

Here's the latest ruling from the FA website Swin, if you can understand all the waffling on. At least arms and hands don't count so you can't be offside for pointing where you want the ball to be played!

Quoted Text
Offside position
It is not an offence to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:

any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered.

A player is not in an offside position if level with the:

    second-last opponent or
    last two opponents

Offside offence
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
    interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

*The first point of contact of the 'play' or 'touch' of the ball should be used
or

gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:
rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent
been deliberately saved by any opponent
A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save by any opponent) is not considered to have gained an advantage.

A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area).

In situations where:

a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12
a player in an offisde position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence
an offence is committed against a player in an offside position who is already playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the offside offence is penalised as it has occurred before the foul challenge

No offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:

    a goal kick
    a throw-in
    a corner kick

Offences and sanctions

If an offside offence occurs, the referee awards an indirect free kick where the offence occurred, including if it is in the player’s own half of the field of play.

A defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area. If the player left the field of play deliberately, the player must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play.

An attacking player may step or stay off the field of play not to be involved in active play. If the player re-enters from the goal line and becomes involved in play before the next stoppage in play, or the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area, the player shall be considered to be positioned on the goal line for the purposes of offside. A player who deliberately leaves the field of play and re-enters without the referee’s permission and is not penalised for offside and gains an advantage, must be cautioned.

If an attacking player remains stationary between the goalposts and inside the goal as the ball enters the goal, a goal must be awarded unless the player commits an offside offence or Law 12 offence in which case play is restarted with an indirect or direct free kick.

It's very nose-ist, isn't it? If you've got a large conk, you've got the potential to be flagged offside when somebody with a small nose wouldn't be!

It's a good job Barry Manilow is a singer and not a footballer,if he was facing the opponents goal he would be flagged offside even if he was stood in his own half.
Sorry Barry.

A perfect summary. Football is a game of mistakes when you think about it. Players, managers and officials all make mistakes that can win or lose games, but that is part and parcel of the game and also makes it unpredictable.- and enjoyable.

Even when a decision goes to VAR it is sometimes impossible to absolutely sure so why not just let the officials make the decisions and use VAR for goal line technology?

Congratulations to the US.
They play a different game to the rest from what I've seen, they are light years ahead. They actually kick the ball properly for a start.
A positive with the VAR decision too.

When you've got so called top journalists such as Oliver Holt posting garbage as below, you know we've lost the plot.

OllieHolt22
Steph Houghton penalty saved by Naeher. Ten of the cruellest minutes in England football history.

Here's another classic from him:

USA win strengthens their case for equal pay with men's team. USWNT are box office. They have players like Rapinoe who are higher profile than any of the men. They're serial winners. Don't see any reason why they should be denied equal pay.

Looking forward to Mr Trump's tweets & the responses.

Well that's a retarded comment. Let's just nuke everyone annoying and worry about the (literal) fallout later.

Trouble is we all know what has happened to England teams when they reach the semis recently

Great stuff. I’ve got a call coming up tomorrow with a couple of Ozzies 😄

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
