How many threads do we have running now regarding the rumour mill of #blah, #blah, & #blah signing for us or maybe there's a potential??..
I for one am not enjoying the end of the season one little bit..the death of the floodlights, the constant cr@p coming out the boardroom, the complete malaise amongst the supporters and the constant throwing of potential signings into the mix with no substantiated proof to back any names up.
Now, I look at the OS almost hourly hoping against hope for our first summer signing, one that'll get us talking positively, get some fans back on side and bring some good to a successful 2919/2020 campaign.
Yet I wonder will it more in the ilk of Robles or more like Hessenthailer... personally, where we'll be shopping, I think it will be the former..
Until then, the cogs of the rumour mill will keep turning...roll on the 3rd of August and stop me going crazy without my  Saturdays of mental turmoil and torture...UTM til I die...

It's not the best time to be signing players though. Everybody is still under contract and being paid for another 5 weeks. Players will be holding out for high wages at this point and start to lower their demands as the season draws closer and they have fewer options and no income. This means to sign the players that you really want, you have to pay more before somebody else comes in. With that in mind, I'd expect Jolley to be looking at signing better players now and the squad fillers can wait until later on in the summer.

Well whatever rumours circulate this summer for me it’s quite evident that we’ve missed a target man/hold up type of striker since lennel jl went although at the time I wasn’t his biggest fan these last couple of years has made me realise how vital he was to us he wasn’t the 20+ goal scorer we all wanted but what he did off the ball and in the air was unreal he was a workhorse who challenged everything even if he wasn’t in the team he was so useful at coming on in the last 10-15 mins of games to run the clock down I liked the look of that smith at Macclesfield but I believe he’s signed for Northampton but with this in mind yes we would also love that 20+ Goals striker maybe we go for a lower league striker hungry like the hearns and bogles etc I’m sure mj will have his targets and it hopefully won’t be long till the club announce the first of many quality signings to get season ticket sales up and running I will be purchasing one anyhow but I’m sure many fans are waiting to see who signs etc but there’s plenty of time yet the seasons just finished and maybe I’m being impatient any thoughts on the target man option welcome UTM

The constant insinuations that I'm involved with the club are not only boring, but wrong. I have no involvement with the club, I live nowhere near Grimsby and attend far fewer games than I would like to.

Just because I don't agree with your viewpoint doesn't make my opinion any less valid. And just because I have a bit more business nouse and understanding of accounts than most, does not make me an accountant.

I don't know who we'll sign or when, but my point is that it's difficult to sign players at this time because they are willing to wait a few weeks and see  if anything better comes along whilst they're still getting paid.

That was actually the premise of the thread..to move away from countless names being banded about and try and capture all the rumours in one thread...so hopefully the end game us to prevent even more rumour threads than we have now ..god I hate the closed season...

We do this every season. Look to save a few bob on a few weeks pay and miss all the juicy fruits.

Most of the contracts end next week. Some clubs have already announced signings, even the dilatory GrimsbyLive sports page says so.

Of course we will see the usual managerial guff "We have several irons in the fire but some players are still considering offers ....." etc. etc.

But we do not see at least 2 or 3 decent signings in the next fortnight it does not take Mystic Meg to predict it will be another long hard slog of a season and the first casualty will be season ticket sales.

Sorry, forgot that bit of management excuses manual.

Regardless, in these days of instant communication between poolside and a manager's mobile that business can be done anytime, anywhere. The point tis really the perception at this end, we have seen it so often. Waiting, waiting, waiting then somebody turns up. We are so thankful and grateful for them agreeing to sacrifice their career by coming down the 180 to GY that we build them up and up and up and then ...... same old, same old. So I'd like to see us for once sign early a couple of players likely to make an instant positive impact on our team next season.  Wishful thinking I know but ....

Amen to that.

Potential players are like the rest of us - they want to join a project that is positive and has a plan. I would imagine they would like to courted early - makes them feel wanted and all that.

Perhaps players with several offers think about money, facilities,  ambition, potential, manager and his playing style and location.

Any negatives on that list for us has to be countered by an increase in money, whether Fenty likes it or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Was it AB3 that waited and waited, and then made the monumental signing of Michael Jeffrey.

Wasn’t Jeffrey to replace the shyster that was Martin Butler, another good player who couldn’t be arsed once he discovered how to read a flipping map.

26 games with at least 3 different clubs over last 2 seasons and as many yellow cards as goals last season, 24 yr old who  just hasn't found the right club after leaving Peterboro, or a player with talent who just doesn't care, the juries out for me..

How does anyone know we haven't tried to sign players already? Problem is that if we contact a player, he wouldn't jump at the chance to sign for us, but would wait to see if there are better offers before committing. We are at the bottom of the food chain so any player worth his salt would be thinking "I can do better than Grimsby.. I'll wait for a better offer". That's where we're at.

Teenage boys may get, cough, 'excited' at almost anything, but making up rumours about footballers is probably stretching the point. WAGs maybe.

I would guess it refers to the speed with which Town’s transfer business is operating ..... or not.

I think he would be a good signing.  I was a bit gutted he left as I thought he was decent but was still young.  I remember seeing one of his goals on Mariners Player where the ball was played up to him whilst he was running forward with 2 defenders present, and he somehow chested the ball whilst twisting his body changing the direction of the ball away from the defenders then hammered it in bottom corner with a foot like a traction engine.   Can't remember who it was against maybe Woking.

Andy Cook - the same Andy Cook who scored 13 goals last season in League 1, and who is halfway through his two-year contract?

I can't see that one happening at all.

I'd be delighted if I was wrong, though. I really rated him when he was here - his partnership with Hannah took us to the top of the league but that was the season when Scott & Hurst signed Brodie in Jan and we faded away as they tried to bring Brodie into the first team.

It's the first name I thought of after reading that post on twitter. And I'd be both surprised and happy - never thought we should have let him go in the first place.

Mind you, it doesn't necessarily have to relate to new players. Keep reading about a group of town fans who got together recently to try and pool their expertise.  Best of luck to them. I get the impression we'll find out more by the end of the week.

He has been told he can leave as he is not their managers plans going forward...and correct me if I'm wrong but in sure I read it on sky sports that he was to be given a free transfer should a team come if for him...

One for the oldies here.

Where do worms live ?  In the ground.  What do we do with rubbish nowadays.  It goes into the ground (landfill). You would have to get up early on bin day and get the bins out.

What would you do with the broth if it has been spoilt,  You would throw it away.

OMG We are signing Dusty Bin

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

You’d have to think that Callum Cooke seems much more likely than Andy Cook, who has basically done well enough at L1 level to expect to stay there. Callum Cooke’s record looks much more probable in terms of signing for a L2 club.

The earliest a bird can catch the worm is at DAY break,so it could mean somebody called DAY is breaking all contact with the club. I also heard that a new CATERING firm is taking over at the Town Hall due to Conservative success in the local elections. Rumour has it that it is called FENDAY and is based down Peaks Parkway-their speciality is COOKIE crumbles which are guaranteed to make mouths dribble  I've definitely lost the plot !

I asked the owner of my local newsagents if I could work a five day week paper round, so that I could go BP on Saturday's, you can guess his reply.
So I had to get a Sunday paper, boy did I pay, every bloody house, had a Times or Guardian paper, each one had supplements galore inside.
In the end I got my old man to run me around in his car, in the winter (for those who can remember when we had proper winters)

By the way Les, do you still have to put the plastic up on the windows at Bury's in the winter?

Not “Catering”, It may have been mis-heard and actually was “Kettering”.  Maybe we are getting a player from them? 😏

Let’s at least sign the fúcking right one this time.

“Hello Grimsby, so let’s just get this straight - YOU want to pay US money to take Makofo off our hands? Oh, err...we’re going to have to have a long, hard think about that.

“After much deliberation, we reluctantly accept your offer”.

If the team you’re buying a player from literally dropping him off for you isn’t a warning sign, I don’t know what is.

Another no from me, seems to have had 2 decent seasons for Mansfield and pretty much becoming another journeyman...that's him signed then I suppose going on our normal track record!!!

I’m on the fence, I think given a run in  the team he’ll bag more than the current forwards we have, but still it’s just a rumour and I can’t see him taking a huge pay cut to come here

Seem to recall MJ saying that we were already talking to players before the end of the season. It would be nice to hear something from the club, it’s very quiet compared to The Jolley Revolution used to sell season tickets last year.

Tbh Pogo, I'm convinced we'll see Dennis sign on a permanent, can't see him wanting to play tinpot again and reckon we'd get him for a song ..
As for our current forwards, do we really have a striker on the books who knows where the onion bag is??..
Just know I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the lack on action on the incomings and can see last minute bargain buckets as per the the GTFC mantel..

I wouldn’t be against Dennis coming back, he was starved of service which was blatantly obvious so if we could bring in a creative player or two along with Dennis I think we’d be in ok shape attacking wise. I’m like you north bank frustration at the lack of activity but it’s still very early days and let’s be honest we won’t be the first option for a lot of decent players

Most teams haven't made a signing yet and what news can the club give us realistically? It's not like they can give us names. No doubt Jolley will be working hard to make deals happen and I'm pretty sure he only just returned from holiday.

Some one mentioned on twitter, replying to CP cryptic tweet, they said something about a group of GTFC fans investing \ takeover.  I wonder if RH has heard anything.

Who said too many Cooks refers to players ? 🤔 !!!

'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

the information i was given, (from a relative who moves in these circles) was that the man in question is from Gy, made a lot of money in hedge funds/trading etc and although not a fan of GTFC wanted to give something back to the town. Source is not a bullshiiter , a pretty successful businessman who follows GTFC but has no agenda

My daughter is in France at the moment and Jolly was pointed out to her in a supermarket. She mentioned that she was" Bain de Golfer " and asked him if he had any news. He was very helpful and told her that he was hoping to sign a winger on his way back through Belgium. Cook scored more goals at League 1 level than Wes Thomas did for us in League 2 last season.

I'd have expected him to get another League 1 club or even someone like Mansfield in our division.

Perhaps the fact we're targeting players like Devitt and Cook is evidence that we might have some more money? Would be very happy with both. Cook was unfit and unprofessional when he was here before but he's clearly progressed and did well in L1 last season. He was always a good player, just very unfit a lot of the time, particularly his second season.

Would love to see Cook back, but it would be a big ask.

First time round, he had great attributes, but was young and i think away from home for the first time...since then, he's gone away and scored at every club he's been at.

Quite an interesting thread on Cook on the Walsall forum, ranging from his signing through to the present day:

https://upthesaddlers.com/t/cookie/761

If nothing else, it’s a brilliant case study in the fickleness of football fans. After a few games he’s a world beater, by November he’s a talentless, non-League fat boy - their best player and an absolute goal machine who shouldn’t be sold for less than £750k by January and then back to being an overweight, unfit clogger come the end of the season.

It sounds like some of his issues are still there - capable of being a bit lazy and by no means a natural athlete. However, he scored 18 in a relegated League One side and averaged 25 a season in his previous three years in the Conference.

I know football’s never that simple but that’s got to be the record of someone capable of bagging 20+ in League Two.

That said, if there’s an opportunity for him to move on from Walsall, and it sounds like there is, surely Tranmere would be the obvious destination?

Think he is an out and out confidence player...when its going well he is there....when it isnt he is far far away.....always gave me the impression he gets unhappy very quickly which i think results in marmite opinions from supporters.
Never seen him as a link up player or target man or sprinter but someone who needs the service from wide....if we dont solve that problem then little point in signing him IMO.

Maybe there is something in this, I mean how often does Town come out and publicly acknowledge potential transfers, unless the deal is done.

I thought he got homesick while he was here.
If that's the case again probably Carlisle would be a natural option for him

I'd be happy to see him back, strongly felt we didn't play to his strengths when we had him and have been proven correct since, in this jolleyball team he'll be banging them in

When he was with us before it became obvious he wasn’t a Hurst (&Scott) type striker. A goal scorer, but not one to run around a lot. Because we were one of the better teams he got plenty of chances to score. IMO just what we needed at the time, but in our current situation, and if he hasn’t addressed the non-athletic side, are we going to create enough opportunities for him?

So far it’s only interest/rumours BUT if town managed to pull off signing cook and Devitt that would be 2 very good additions for this level, Devitt the creative player we’ve been missing since Embleton got injured and cook’s got goals in him.. could be an interesting few weeks UTM

Wes Thomas wasn't really a bust-a-gut kind of striker and he did ok, to the point that we missed him quite a bit when he was absent (although I think that's as much down to the lack of striking options and service as much as anything else).

I suppose it all falls down to who's paired with someone like Andy Cook.  Of the current crop, I think if you could pair him up with Vernam and Jordan Cook you've probably got a bit of everything in there.  If you somehow managed to mix him with another creative player like Devitt, you're probably not far off a very, very good frontline.

Who knows.  Does seem funny that we're in for players who I would normally expect us to be priced out for...

I think you can still expect us to be priced out of signing either Devitt or Cook.

The stock of them is high in both cases, they are both late 20's so will be looking to secure a decent contract for a last real payday before they will start dropping down.

No way in hell we would compete with many sides wages wise, Walsall also want a fee for Cook which makes it highly unlikely to happen. Even if we did get an offer accepted I can see it being the same as Angol last summer. We had our bid accepted but he held out for higher wages in L1 with Shrewsbury. Unless Cook loves a stroll along Clee promenade or the fish n chips why would he come here?

I'm hoping that someone will correct me, but do we ever announce an interest in a player we're genuinely looking to sign? The first thing anyone usually hears about a Jolley signing is when they've signed. The cynic in me thinks we're just trying to create headlines to pacify fans.

Yep. Strikes me as sloppy reporting from RH/Matt Dean/JT really. "Town are interested in XXXXXXX - however we understand other clubs and wages and a fee might be a stumbling block for a player who banged them in at L1 level last season and is still under contract". No excrement.

I suspect, when RH use the term “we understand” (implying they’ve spoken to the club), what they actually mean most of the time is ‘we presume’ or ‘we’ve heard and have put 2 and 2 together’.

Cook has a good goalscoring record since leaving us but, skimming through that Walsall thread, it doesn't seem that he's changed much as a character. I'd be surprised if he returned given that he was obviously unhappy during his last spell with us. Not sure I'd welcome him as a signing if we had to pay much of a fee but would hope that things would click second time around if he does come. It might be that a player such as Devitt (if he were to sign) would be just the sort of player that Cook needs to be playing alongside.

I'd be surprised if either was join us, truth be told.

I thought when we had Cook here he was a far better option than Brodie for example but Brodie had the reputation for being a goalscorer and seemed to get the game time. I wasn`t suprised Cook left but I was disapointed because I thought he was better than we had seen of him . Personally at 28 I would love to see him back a right handful for defenders, good in the air and scores goals he and Vernam would be a good pairing.I still think it unlikely Town would win his signature but stranger things have happened.

Tbh Maringer, I'm not a big fan of Cook and don't think he's worth investing in at the top end of our budget.. Devitt, I like, and would be worth the money..

For me, someone like Devitt is more important than Cook, but would 100% take both.

Just still confident in Vernam being able to score, should he be provided the chances

Quite so, somebody has realised it is better for fans to talk about something that will never happen than to not have something to talk about.

maybe we aren't.....maybe the club is trying to raise interest and give the effect of upping their game for this season....say you are interested in a couple of higher profile/ quality players and then when they sign for someone else you say..."we tried really hard to get them "  give the impression of ambition for once..
find it strange that so far under Jolley very little has escaped regards the identity of potential signings and usually they come as a suprise....to have 2 supposed named targets "released" in the same week seems a little odd to me.

I don't know if time dulls people's memories on here or maybe those that used to slag off Cook as being over weight and one paced have stopped posting but his previous spell here wasn't without detractors. Personally I'd get behind any signing until their performances showed that support was misplaced.
As for LJL we've spent the last two seasons bemoaning the lack of someone with a presence in the box and the ability to hold the ball up for team mates. His previous spell showed both of those abilities in his locker albeit in a lower standard of football. I've no idea whether we are looking at him but on balance I'd probably rather be moaning at him for missing chances than what we've had recently when we haven't conjured up the chances in the first place.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

You’ve got to ask yourself why Walsall don’t want him after he’s scored 15 goals . He didn’t look like he could be arsed and enjoyed life in Waltham a bit too much by all accounts . I’d rather look elsewhere.

I remember seeing him play at Welling and thinking how is he a professional footballer.

We wont be able to afford Cook or Devitt- they'll both want best part of £100K. As for The Shop [who I really liked ] he hasn't played since January due to anteria cruciate ligament injury and in any case signed a 6 month contract last week at the Shrews to prove his fitness.

I agree, no chance. Just about sums us up as a club now. We can’t sign players on the way up and we can’t sign them on the way down either. We either sign them before they even start to go up or we just have to wait until they hit rock bottom.

So Matt green looks like a nailed on signing then? 32, released by div 2 club mid sesson, drops into non league, can't even get into Salford city's  eleven on a regular basis, not wanted by them as they've now reached our level ,and so becomes a number 1 target.a Salford city reject ffs.

Dont think you can class Devitt and Cook as players on the way down. Cook scored 18 goals in a poor league 1 club and Devitt was close to getting Carlisle into the league 2 playoffs. Not actually sure why either of these players are available. Either way i cant see us signing either by a mixture of wage demands, location and their personal ambitions to play higher than a mid table league 2

Funny that - I am sure we signed them before.

You are probably right, but they are league 2 players. Not exactly setting our sights too high to get rejected.

I was a big Cook fan when he was here - at least in his first season. He used to hang in the air to win headers, and has a good eye for goal. A proper centre forward.

Oh so because we've signed them before we will sign them again?

Cook signed from a part time Barrow, so we at the time was a step up, we aren't going to be a step up now for him when he's at Walsall are we, Devitt was an unknown when he signed last time, not an unknown now is he and had an excellent campaign last season... they are both now out of our range.

Not that I rate Matt green really but Salford did sign that Rooney lad from Aberdeen and were paying him 4K a week so not really surprising he didn’t start much .

Well that figures doesn’t it? If we can’t sign them on the way up or down we certainly won’t be able to sign them in the middle of a career.

So Matt green looks like a nailed on signing then? 32, released by div 2 club mid sesson, drops into non league, can't even get into Salford city's  eleven on a regular basis, not wanted by them as they've now reached our level ,and so becomes a number 1 target.a Salford city reject ffs.

Wasn't released by Lincoln, Salford bought him.

If we have got "no chance, no chance at all" of signing league 2 players, who have already signed for us once, who would you suggest we try to sign?

Would players three divisions below be any good, or would they be out of our reach too?

Might as well.

National League players would definitely be too expensive.

I think we are sitting tight and waiting for a favourable exchange rate with the krona.

We sold him because he could barely get in our side, and I imagine was a costly addition to have on the bench - Plus we got a reasonable price, plus a bonus for them getting promoted. That said I really liked him as  a player - Needs too many chances to score but that's hwy he is at League 2 level.

Not that I rate Matt green really but Salford did sign that Rooney lad from Aberdeen and were paying him 4K a week so not really surprising he didn’t start much .

Agree, being kept out of the side by Rooney who is a top end of 2 player if not league 1, is hardly shameful... From what I've seen of him I always liked him, fast, strong think he could do a job for us, and is a realistic signing- been based in the area with Mansfield and Lincoln, and we could afford his wages too I'd imagine. I'd be willing to hold my judgment on any player until I've seen them play for us... Padraig Amond was hardly ripping it up before he came, and we'd all have him back in a flash! Of course there are players I'd rather see come in than Green, but regardless of what you think of Jolley's football, he's obviously going to try and get the best players we can afford... He knows the league now, and what sort of players are effective, I'll judge his signings this season far more than last as it was an unknown entity in many ways... I've got a feeling we might see some much better signings this season, and the lack of activity so far isn't really a bad sign, I'd sooner we brought in the right person than rushed a 50:50 just to appease the fans.

100k a year to bench warm...Not wanting to knock you guys per se (bigger attendances more investment etc), but it really does show the gulf we would have to make up in order to compete at the top end of the division.

Having said that I wonder how much we paid Welsh to do diddly squat last season. I imagine it must have been a reasonable amount.

Green could still definitely do a job for us for sure. Not worth the 3k he's more than likely currently on though. Peak Matt Green was quality at Conference/L2 level. As good as Hearn was in the season that they both smashed it.

Matt Green. I’m sure I had a pot of that from the Humbrol range at Woolies.

He has 3 years left on his contract at Osterunds, also linked to Jack Grimmer, neither will happen, both rumours started by an "ITK" Twitter account whilst isn't ITK!

Matt Green is great lad always friendly but is also is descent striker.
Was top scorer for us in 17/18 with 17, not sure of his Salford record but seemed to have scored a few screamers for them.

I remember Yeovil sneaking a one-nil win against us at blundell park and it was down to omar sowunmi. He has awesome at the back for them that day.
Mitch Rose must have put 10 long throws into there box on the last 10 minutes and he won every header.
Would be happy with this if true

Omar Sowunmi is regarded as one off the better players at Yoevil, only 23 aswell so room to develop? Can play centre back and up front apparently, I would think he would be a welcome addition if he signs.

In the above article about the Yeovil player, one of our old floodlights is shown very prominently.  Is this our main selling point to the player to get him to sign for us?

Another selling point I suppose is that it also states "we are going to win the cup one day"

Man in his twenties doesn’t want to sit in drinking tea and eating roasted meat and boiled veg on a Saturday night. Who cares as long as he puts a shift in and bags a few goals on a Saturday afternoon?

I wonder if said article was written before or after it became clear he wanted to leave Walsall? May explain a lot if it was the latter...

Some players just have a style of play that looks a bit lethargic but that's not to mean they don't put a shift in.

To be honest, if Andy Cook signs and gets 15+ goals then I won't care what his diet or social life is like.

Thing is, with Town fans, you get someone who's an obvious grafter, like LJL, and even when he got 20 in a season you still found fans moaning about him.

I'd be careful not to create a squad and a culture like that of 09/10, so of course I do care to some degree that we sign good people as well as good players.

I think Cook is a good lad. He's maybe a bit of a throwback but that doesn't make him lazy. We all know how tough it is to find good strikers at any level, so if we can somehow start next season with Cook and Green up front then I'd say Jolley's done a very good job indeed.

That could well happen regardless of whether or not we sign another striker...

I hope you are right. I also hope that if we do sign Cook or A.N Other striker that we settle on a system to play 2 up front and give them time to gel into a partnership like Matt and Podge at Newport and we don't just keep faffing about with one up top.  If you have these players you have to play to their strengths. We need to get the ball into the danger area and outnumber the defenders with at least one winger with the crossing quality of a Mike Brolly and a goalscoring box to box midfielder of the Joe Waters/John Cockerill style.

Interesting that one of the CA diarists wrote this today...

Quoted Text
"If you want to know about the things that haven't happened yet, or probably won't happen at all, then, well, you know where to go. Once upon a time, your West Yorkshire Diary used to go to a mate who worked in a newsagents down St Peter's Avenue for fairly credible rumours, but that source dried up a little while back. Now I get them online, where the quality of rumour is, quite frankly, abysmal. That's because any fornicator can say anything they like.

The rumours tend to be either made up by bored teenagers searching for attention, or they're relatively genuine from credible sources – who then act like bored teenagers themselves by giving us crypric clues to assert their tribal 'I know more than you' dominance.

If you've got something to say, say it. If you're scared that the rumour may not be true, then don't say it. This quest for adulation from fellow fans irritates me more than the people who push the 'wait' button at a pedestrian crossing, even though you've clearly pressed it already."

I know there are various people writing these entries, but it wasn't long ago one of them made some really cryptic allusion to a potential takeover if/when we hit 50 points last season before falling decidedly silent on it. Unless I missed the follow up?

Agree with this 100%!!

Some people that have closer links to the Club, whether current or previous, like to post ITK comments as a show of Power, Knowledge! They then don’t follow these up as they quieten down. CP, formerly MT is a prime culprit of this.

The truth is, nobody knows as much as they make out!! They are just clutching onto social media acceptance and popularity!!

This clearly hasn't been rated by the TFTPA (Town Fans Transfer Projection Algorithm):

  • Connection to Burnley Under 23s - 0 points
Played in Sweden - 0 points
Used to play for Town - 0 points
Only scored 1 in 9 for lower league side - 3 points
Lincs-Links: Family links to NELincs - born in Sheffield so granny probably has a chalet on the Fitties - 1 point
    'Sighted' in Millfields/Lockhill Petrol Station/Club Shop - 0 points

I've been reliably uninformed by my sauce, Tartar sports journalist Aboul Shittar, that Yersinia Pestis is coming to Grimsby. Originally from Samara in Russia I believe, so maybe MJ has taken a steppe to find a lethal strikeforce from further afield. Aboul tells me YP was nicknamed Chernaya Smert -  must be a reference to his dark hair and deadly finish.

Throwing guesses into the wind by random names people on twitter link us with doesn't make you right or somebody with insider knowledge. Was told he was signing on Monday and when that didn't happen time to add a couple more days on in the hope he'll arrive. He was literally either signing for us or Bradford so when Bradford went with a similar striker you could pretty much put money on him signing here.

Pick any 3 players we get linked with and say they are signing by next week and one of them will. It works for Forza and friends.

Apparently Grimsby are in talks with John Obika.

He played nearly 100 games for us and I liked him, he seemed strong, powerful and a decent finisher.

Soiled himself by signing for Oxford and he had bad injuries last season I believe.

If he can get back to the form he showed for us when we were pushing for promotion to the Championship, you'll have a very good player (if he signs)

Kris, I know one of the directors well, and if you come from a fishing background you'll have heard of the Butts. Furthermore the Osmond stand is named after My Godfather's grandfather - I think it's fair to say I do have insider knowledge, probably quite a lot more than you, so yes I did know Hanson was signing, but I'm not exactly going to go out and declare it outright - that would be a miscarriage of trust. So please stop with your Ill informed, speculative accusations

😀 Sorry, I’m just really enjoying the notion that you can prove your ‘in the know’ credentials because the Osmond Stand was named after your godfather’s grandfather!
That is class. 🤣

Was told a few weeks ago, posted it, and the rumours have slowly grown since, so I'm confident it's true

Seen on Twitter someone say Thomas Henry Shutes, who when you Google, shows as London..

So all adds up to what I've been told

Don't get me wrong, if true, additional investment is obviously most welcome, but investing significant cash into the status quo isn't exactly what we need. What is needed is fresh ideas and a fresh start to change the mindset of the club and remove the sterility alongside additional investment. We've had a couple of million in from Mike Parker and the sale of Bogle and absolutely nothing has fundamentally changed at all with the current set up. If and it's a big if the rumours circulating are true, I hope it's not just more of the same with said money just pumped into a club that doesn't seem to have any forward thinking ideas. A changing of the guard will be a big boost and see many lost fans return..

Normally agree with your posts. But I’m afraid you really seem to see the negative in everything at the moment. Believe me, I would love to see JF go. But just maybe a new investment will see him drop back a bit with a view to a dignified exit in one or two seasons.  And at this moment in time I’ll take that.

Seventeen/eighteen years going down one unsuccessful path is long enough for me. Seen too much shite football and lack of ideas off the pitch since we've been back in the league to be patient any longer. Don't think you've said anything different to what I have really just phrased it a different way. Investment with Fenty here, welcome but compromised, investment and a fresh start with fresh ideas even better. I think it's negative settling for a compromised position where Fenty stays rather than hoping for fresh investment and a fresh start. How am I being negative about the club by wanting a fresh start? The club isn't John Fenty and John Fenty isn't the club. I want what's best for the club and the club only. John has had his turn for seventeen years and his record is his record. Time for someone else to have a go not more of the same where extra millions have disappeared in the past without an iota of change at the club. I usually agree with what you say too, but from my perspective settling for a compromised deal is more negative than hoping for a fresh start when it comes to the club's immediate future. We've trodden water for far too long now while others are motoring ahead. We can't waste another couple of years, just for JF to plan a dignified exit..

Edit - If fans can't try and shame the club into improving, what else can they do? Settling for what we've got isn't going to help shake the powers that be out of their slumber. A lot of criticism regarding ticket pricing for our younger supporters and hey presto, we have a "fans of the future" scheme being advertised by the club and the Trust without them adding any flesh to the bone. A plan being hastily worked upon as we speak I guess. They can't say it's been in the long term planning stage because how the hell would we have the recently advertised children's season ticket prices? Crticism can have a positive effect.. eventually..

What a thoroughly depressing article. No wonder nobody wants to come here.

That isn't a true picture is it??

Every bloody article focuses on a dying Freeman Street and some slum houses. Every town in England has got a secondary shopping area that is on its last legs but refuses to die and every town has boarded up houses in the worst areas of it.

How many people visit Freeman Street or live next to boarded up houses? Hurry up and get the worst bits sorted and lets move on for goodnrss sake.

I don't live in the Town anymore and thought that Freeman Street had already died.

There are still shops open, so the press are able to take a picture of half a dozen shoppers traipsing down there trying to make out it is the town centre. It is absolutely ridiculous and totally unwarranted.

Like every other town  Grimsby has problems, but the council should really be answering these stories with a positive vision; the rest of the country will think Grimsby IS Freeman Street as more and more stories like this get published by a media out to belittle the town unfortunate enough to have Grim in its name. Get the eye sores sorted and lets look to the future.

Would be nice if he could combine his interest in art and Grimsby - can easily see a few of these items gracing the walls or spaces in B.P. and would also brighten up the blundell Park Hotel

I never got told of any names, however by reading into the telegraph, it sounds like a full take over, rather than investment with fenty, so will be interesting to know how that suddenly changed from the original plan

aye, i heard that too.he's the lad that we nearly signed in January, the one Jolley was gutted about, as he described it as a 'game changer' or summat like that. Another one like Green where we are actually benefiting from his location. still has house and family up here, and desperately wants to get back local

Meyler is too good for league 2 surely?

Just turned 30, but Coventry on loan last season, was the first time below the Championship.

Played for Rep of Ireland 25+ times.

But guess he wants to be further north than Reading now his family have a new baby

I’d heard a different name was the ‘big’ signing who was due to sign that week but we missed out because he’d eventually sign on loan for someone else. Although I did hear we’d just missed out on Meyler too. Same source has been right about the goings on this week. Would be a good signing and it’s another one that makes me think about making an effort about renewing.

He’d be taking a massive pay cut to join us surely. They reckon he was on circa 10 grand a week at Reading. The absolute maximum I could see us paying him is 2 grand a week and that’s a good chunk more than our highest paid players are currently on. That’s an 80% reduction. Don’t get me wrong, I hope he’s coming here, a midfield of him and Hessenthaler has got me salivating slightly, but surely he’s out of our league financially?

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I don't know if he is on a free or not but if he is we could give him a big signing on fee to sweeten the deal.

Meyler might be in our league. Don't forget at his age*, a long contract is very appealing. And I think we'd be in a position to offer it to him.

Hewitt

Thanks

If true I think would be a good signing going on what the Notts County fans were saying of him before last season IIRC. I think he was a player they were hoping would help them escape from the drop but did not play much last season.

Very versatile player as well.

Awful last season when playing right back, but when played every game at CM in their playoff season supposedly one of their best players. So hopefully he will be utilised as a box to box with Hess and offer competition to Clifton.

Lets just hope Jolley does not see him as a RB then!

We do need more cover in midfield though, not sure about the young pros but I make that 4 centre mids if he signs? Hess, Clifton, Whitehouse and possibly Hewitt, probably need 1 more for cover if we are playing 3 in the middle.

Have to say I was impressed with Sowunmi in the game at BP last season. We hit the ball high and launched long throw ins towards the box and he effortlessly headed clear without moving.

If we sign Hewitt and Sowunmi, we would certainly be an aerial threat. Last season we were small so we had an obvious weakness to exploit. The teams with the least weaknesses do better so I am happy to see this weakness being addressed.

Another Notts fan's take on Hewitt...

Quoted Text
Most of our fans will hammer Hewitt, but they’re wrong basically. Unless you play him at right back, he is admittedly an absolutely awful right back.

In central midfield though he’s a good League Two player. Works hard, quick, tall, covers loads of ground, bit of an all rounder. As long as you play him in central midfield with someone who can cover his weaknesses (not great positionally or at passing), he’s a good player.

He played centre back in the odd emergency and there was some talk that Nolan saw that as a viable position for him long term, but I’m not sure that he’s positionally good enough.

Imagine he could do a job on the wing, but his versatility is both a strength and a curse. His best spell at Notts was easily the few months where he started every game in central midfield and wasn’t constantly shifted around to fill gaps

Elliot Hewitt described by a county pal of mine as awful awful player. He would drive him up to Grimsby himself but he can’t drive!🤥

I would rather trust MJ's judgement, than 'some random geezer' who is a Notts Co fan.

I believe Sowunmi is signing. Waiting for his contract to end on the 30th before anything is announced.

Hewitt and Sowunmi also followed on each other on Twitter quite recently.

If Hewitt and Sowunmi were to sign then we would have added some much needed physicality, both speed and strength, to the team. It's been years since we were really a physical match for the opposition and I can't count the amount of games where we've looked less athletic than the opposition so I'm really pleased this seems to be being addressed.

We still need a midfielder who has an eye for a pass in my opinion because the 4 we have (if Hewitt signs) are all hard workers but none of them are particularly brilliant technically. Unless we're perhaps looking at getting our creativity from players like Ogbu and trying to be difficult to beat in the middle of the park. The post above talking about not having weaknesses was spot on, the teams that have done well in L2 recently haven't generally been loads better in most aspects of the game but have had few weaknesses. Look at Lincoln, not particularly impressive in either game against us but also made very, very few mistakes and there was no obvious area of the game in which they struggled.

If you look back on our signings over the last 5 years generally if fans from other clubs speak negatively about a player they are usually right but not one fan it's if it's a general consensus.

The team/squad looks to be shaping up nicely.

Re "ET" comment.  Rather than "coming home", didn't he "go home"?

Have to say I was impressed with Sowunmi in the game at BP last season. We hit the ball high and launched long throw ins towards the box and he effortlessly headed clear without moving.

If we sign Hewitt and Sowunmi, we would certainly be an aerial threat. Last season we were small so we had an obvious weakness to exploit. The teams with the least weaknesses do better so I am happy to see this weakness being addressed.

I'm not sure that Hewitt will be an aerial threat, according to wiki he is 5'9" and 11 stone wet through!

Sowunmi signed a two year contract July 2018. He is on Yeovil retained list and Captain.

Like Hewitt, Sowumni may have a release clause in his contract following Yeovils relegation. I do hope this is true as he was awesome for them when yeovil beat us at blundell park last season. He got injured and out for the rest of the season with yeovil in mid-table. When they lost him they nose dived down into the bottom 2

According to wiki:

"He was out of the squad for most of the 2018-19 season with an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury. He was offered a new contract by Charlton at the end of the 2018–19 season.[23] He signed a new one-year contract in June 2019.[24]"

That was quite tall for then. Short now.

James Wilson has mutually ended his contract with Lincoln City today.

Would he be a consideration as an extra centre half for this season?
