Sadly lost to us at aged 70.

A very brave and successful driver.  He did not let life-threatening injuries stop him achieving in life.  Many of the safety features in F1 today are down to him.  In his day, he raced knowing the severe risks that he and others faced.

He had a wicked sense of humour.  So, he would appreciate this old joke that I fondly remember:

2 blokes were driving across a dessert in the USA.  One took hold of an old newspaper blowing across their path.  One bloke said “they have the last F1 results here”.

The second bloke says “who won?”

“Louda”

“WHO won”

“Louda, f ing Louda!!!!!!!!

WHO WON??????

Etc

Lauda.

Though not an F1 fan, per se, I've watched the odd GP in my time and always appreciated his dry wit when interviewed. Obviously very bloody-minded to resume racing so soon after terrible injuries.

I watched that race when he crashed health and safety did not happen in those days If a driver crashed half the time it was the other drivers that got them out which was the case for Niki,

I thought he was a goner but got out that alive  he did,

RIP Niki you were one of the best.

IIRC before the race Lauda had tried to start a drivers strike because he thought the track was too dangerous
