What can be done to stop these sort of attacks (Brum derby today)? Should intoxicated people be let into football stadia?

Rightly so the thug is going to be banned from football for life and should be prosecuted in the courts.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Was he intoxicated? But I would say no but how do  labs assess this especially if further alcohol is consumed once inside the ground. Think a high percentage of us fans have attended games after drinking more than we should but thankfully this has not resulted in players being attacked.

Hopefully guy will be banned for life and get at least three year custodial sentence, as should the Hibs fan yesterday, to make sure there is a real deterrent otherwise these incidents may become more prevalent. Seem to recall supporter doing this in previous derby game, without the physical violence, when he stood in front of the Villa keeper goading him.

A derby game to avoid me thinks

Trying to enter a football ground while drunk is already an offence.

If some anus wants to jump over a barrier there’s little you can do other than put massive fences up, and we all saw where that ended.

The twit will go to prison for a bit and get a life ban, but Birmingham should be docked points too, serve as a deterrent.

They’re about to be docked 12 anyway!

It’s knobheads like this that mean stewards and police decide to make life difficult for all fans attending games. He’s gone a step further today there’s people like him in every stadium up and down the country. His fellow Birmingham fans even applauded him off.

We can moan all we like about police, but until as fans we openly weed these bellends out it’ll continue to happen.

Prison sentence (as a deterrent to others), a lifetime ban for the invader and playing behind closed doors for at least one game for Birmingham. A steward also involved allegedly too. Grealish isn’t everyone’s favourite player but I think the majority of football fans are pleased with how it turned out for him in the end today. It’s probably added 20 more years of over-policed derbies and no beer on terraces for every fan in England too. twit!

As for the tw@t who ran on I just hope someone went to his cell and told him Greilsh scored the winner. He’ll be in court tomorrow and all being well will get what he deserves.

Grimsby Town fans have proved time and time again you can have a drink and be well behaved,

That person I will not say fan was just a nutter and wants locking up and banned from attending football for life.

Shocking behaviour, he’ll spend some time at her majesty’s pleasure and probably never step foot in a football ground ever again and rightly so. Personally I’m never sure punishing the club itself is the best way of dealing with it, whether it’s a fine or a points deduction it just seems like an easy way out for the FA (or football league, whoever will deal with this) and just scapegoats the club. It’s a mindless idiot, what could Birmingham City, the stewards or police have genuinely done to prevent a completely random action that they had no idea was about to happen?

Birmingham City have form on this kind of thing in games versus Villa, bit historic but rember the Enkleman incident?

No doubt the bloke has form for being an idiot and will pay the price, at least with a ban. The problem is the precedent. Did he think up this assault all by himself with his own minimal IQ or was he influenced by the one in Scotland? And following on from that - will his stupidity make other thugs aware that security in a ground is now minimal if you really want to be a pitch invader?

Deterrents hardly ever work on the thick and the drunk. I think clubs have to give some serious thought to security and prevention and players have to act responsibly in the way they celebrate by gestures and leaping barriers and charging into fans.

All seater grounds will probably not be able to use the front 3or4 rows of seats now to give the stewards a chance to see those making a run for the pitch. Is this how modern segregation/crowd control works?

The individual in case, let's not bother calling him a football fan because he isn't, is the one to blame here.  No-one else.

This didn't happen because of alcohol or because of poor stewarding, it happened because the individual believes it's acceptable behaviour.  That's the problem of society.  Not football, not Birmingham City, not the stewards or the police who were in attendance.

The stewards and the police are massively outnumbered at games and it doesn't take a genius to work out that each steward/police officer can't contain up to 100 people each.

The sad thing is that whilst this individual will probably receive a suspended prison term and some community service, the real punishment will be handed to Birmingham City and football fans in general.  The next however many second city derbies will be practically locked down.

What happened was deplorable, but will the fall-out mirror the fall-out to what happens every weekend at Horse Racing events throughout the summer?  You can compare this to any acts at any public event that take place.  Scumbags, unfortunately, attend and it's down to society to make sure the individuals are punished and the message is loud and clear that it won't be tolerated.  What doesn't work is punishing the mass innocent parties who attended to watch the spectacle.

That could be countered by the number of " fans " we have with banning orders. It's also a fact that for the last game of the season at BP fans will come onto the pitch even though a/ they know it is an offence b/ the are constantly told not to come onto the pitch for that game. I've even seen posts on this site defending those who come onto the pitch for the last game. It doesn't matter whatever game it is, any decent, responsible fan should never come onto the pitch , regardless of the situation.

I should have said our regular fans, we have more than the usual idiots that attend games when they think they can cause trouble with a good chance of getting away with it,

The Grealish goal and celebration were the highlight of the weekend football wise for me. He gets so much crap off other fans, yeah he wasn't a saint in his early years but he's been a top player for Villa the last few seasons and they'd be a lot closer to the autos if they'd had him fit all season this season. His goal against Derby in the match before was a beauty too. Brum fans have always had a larger element of classlessness to their support and booing Grealish off after he's been attacked like that was pretty scummy too. Obviously, I'm talking about a minority here.

Also similar incident in the Man Utd game wasnt there ? Chris Smalling was pushed/ confronted. They showed a glimpse of it on Match of the Day but Sky and the Premier League will want to snuff the coverage of that out as best they can i am sure.

Maybe there was little the clubs could have done to avoid what happened

Unless you're a Town fan going to an away game of course where you routinely come in for some heavy handed stewarding and policing... Stevenage for example?

I didn't go to that notorious away fixture but when we played away at MK last August. it was a warm night, going in to the ground I was dressed in my Town shirt and a pair of jeans...

In my pockets I had my wallet, my phone and my glasses case

I was told to empty my pockets and to open up the glasses case to make sure I wasn't going to be taking in anything I shouldn't have been

Maybe this was over the top especially as I like to think I'm someone who doesn't give off any vibes of causing trouble.

I thought that stewarding was somewhat excessive....on reflection though, maybe the Villa stewards don't have such strict orders to control visiting supporters, even if there's been tension in the past.

Not saying that it would have prevented that idiot yesterday from running on the pitch ( or me at MK ) but maybe just being frisked and checked a bit more on the way in might have identified him as a potential risk?

It was a Birmingham home game and assuming the individual concerned was in the home stand it would be very unlikely that he would have been searched by stewards. In my experience only away supporters are viewed as potential troublemakers

I think the issue is more about how this bloke is clearly a male private rather than if he came through the home or away end, or indeed what level of security and scrutiny he had to get through before entering the ground.

He should be made to watch Scunny home and away for ten years.

Yup, plenty of time all on his own to reflect on his actions 😉

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Apart from going back to fencing in the fans I don't see how clubs can do to stop one idiot.

If they anouce that they are going to punish clubs I can guarantee it will be a club like us that gets hammered firstand not a big club.

14 weeks of porridge and Sky TV and just a ten year ban. Is that really a deterrent to others with regards both punishments?

If that had happened in Cleethorpes market square on a Saturday night he wouldn't have even been arrested or something....

Sounds to me like your defending the idiot. It's okay to run on the pitch and twit a player then!

I'd like to think if that did happen in Cleethorpes on a Saturday night then the perpetrator would at least be arrested.

i think the point was that people do worse in Meggies and don't get arrested...take the actual offence/incident out of the football environment and he would have probably been seperated and sent in the opposite direction.   Not saying thats right but it seems that football related offences are punished to a greater degree and with less tolerence.....can you imagine getting arrested and sent to court for assault with an inflatable during Cleethorpes Parade..... i highly doubt it.

People get arrested based on evidence . There are about 20 cameras on him when he does this .

He got what he deserved. Is this the result of folk craving attention with the likes of Instagram - which I'm simply too old to understand -  and thinking "millions of folk will see me if I run on and twit Grealish"

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

Nah was supposed to be an hilarious, yet thought provoking inversion of the classic juxtaposition of what happens in football to what happens on Saturday nights in town centres.

Needs a bit more work.

Greallish handled the situation well and gave the best reply by scoring.

Would prefer him to keep his job. Less reliant on the rest of us and he can then model responsible parenting to his family. As well as porridge, he should be made to help tidy up canals or areas blighted by fly tipping.

A proper punishment would be to put him in the ring with Anthony Joshua, 3 rounds to decide. See how "hard and brave" he is when he has to face an opponent face on and not attacking them from behind.

We don`t have a great track record for supporter behaviour and at Burton one of our fans confronted (shoved, abused) our goalkeeper.

Thought it was cowardly attack from behind ,stupidest comment was on BBC about arming the police at games like what could go wrong with that one.
