I see no reason why we shouldn't give the current management team longer than the normal contracts on offer, that's assuming they are only on a six month rolling.

Jolley seems to be starting something here so let's tie him up to the club to deter possible future vultures from the door unless they come up with some serious compensation.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Giving an unproved young manager a 6 month rolling contract makes sense,
Now Jolley has proved himself and given town fans more belief than they have had since coming back into the league, He deserves a 3 year deal, Come on John you know you want to.

Absolutely we need to protect our assets which isn’t just players.

Jolley is an asset and as much as rewarding him for his good work it should be done to put off anyone who comes sniffing around.

Maybe not but at least the club losing the manager/player gets some compensation when one leaves under contract.

If you were MJ and you were offered a three-year deal on improved terms what would you do?

I am not saying he wouldn't sign it, just interested in opinions!

I think he wants to establish himself as a football league manager, let’s not forget this is his first job like this in this country. That’s why I think it’s be welcomed by him, another step to achieving his goal.

Which is also why I don’t think he would neccisarily walk unless it was a seriously big offer. Easy to do well leave and then be unemployed in 2/3 months. Take hurst at Ipswich for example, difference is hurst has had a number of years as a successful manager previously and could quite easily get another job. Jolley might find difficult if he left and then got sacked.

I’m sure he’d sign a new deal as he could use that to his advantage. Not so much to his own personal betterment but it would say to any prospective signings that we are a stable club with a long term plan.

There is evidence that the team can improve and play good football.  This potential hs been created by Jolley and he must see that he can take us further up the league.  This is to the benefit of the club - and Jolley. A win win position.

Coaching positions are different. He did a one game stint as assistant manager at Boston as a favour when Dennis Greene took over. His spell as first team coach at Lincoln was when they had just dropped into the Conference and were in all sorts of turmoil. He did a 3 year stint at Burnley before the opportunity in management came along at Eskilstuna.  You can soon be on the scrapheap as a manager so I think he will sit tight until he feels he has taken us as far as he can.

Imagine how many years contract you would give to MJ if he had won more league games than he’s lost and not the other way around. No ones going to be interested in MJ until he’s won promotion. I would suggest we wait until then before we start handing out daft contracts.

Right, so wait until people are interested and the react to that... yes because that’s never gone wrong before has it.

Three years is not “daft” I’d hazard a guess it’s probably just about the norm.

If what we are seeing now starting to bear fruit isn’t worth a little gamble than I’m at a loss as to what is. We as a club have been behind in how we do things for years and it’s about time we became a little proactive with these things. I could list a huge amount of players we’ve lost because we didn’t commit to contracts and was either too cautious or too tight.

He’s building a good side who play attacking football on the floor. They play with passion, pride and are improving weekly. Won’t be long until that gets noticed and it’ll be to late I’m afraid.

As I said, if that ain’t worth a relatively small gamble I don’t know what is!

You have only to have been to the last three games to realise something special is being built.

2 of our last 15 permanent managers (spanning nearly 25 years) have lasted 3 years or more. To commit to 4 and a bit years of MJ when he’s only won just 17 league games out of 42 and lost 18 strikes me as being ridiculous.

How very long MJ is under contract if someone like Stoke City approached him (like with Nathan Jones) he’ll be gone whether he’s got 6 months or 3 years left on his contract.

He may well be gone but a 3 year contract with a compensation clause (like Lincoln have with Danny Cowley) would surely suit us better than someone just paying us 6 months!

You are completely missing the point. He may have won less games than he's lost but he also took over probably the worst squad in the club's history who were 3/4 of the way through the club's second worst run of form ever. He somehow managed to keep that team up and with a limited budget and less than a year in the job has already improved the side and squad immeasurably.

Yes he would be gone if a big team approached him but we would get significantly more compensation if he had a 3 year contract as opposed to a 6 month one. If a manager is successful then a long contract protects the club, it's only if the manager is useless and needs sacking that a long contract becomes a millstone around a club's neck. Look at the Cowley's down the road, their long contract and large release clause means nobody has really looked at poaching them with serious interest allowing Lincoln more time to improve with a good management pair. MJ might not have technically had any success yet but if you can't see the improvements in the side and be encouraged then I think you should find another hobby.

You mean like when we kept Paul Hurst on a rolling contract and he was in his car two months into the season following promotion?

There's an argument for not getting carried away.  Turn of the year Jolley was the best thing since sliced bread, defeats to Lincoln and FGR with a changed system and he was out of his depth, 3 wins on the bounce and he's the messiah again...

But there's no denying that something special is happening here.  There's a building job going on and we're starting to see beyond the plans and foundations, we can see something that is working.  If we're not offering longer terms to Jolley, we should be.

Jolley is like anyone else at the end of the day, he won't be here forever and if he continues to impress he'll be managing a bigger club than us in the long term.  When that happens we want to make sure we're as well compensated as is possible.

But we also want to make sure Jolley is happy here to get the most out of him.  What sort of message does it send when you're doing a good job with no long-term offer made to keep you?  The longer he's on a short-term deal, the higher the risk that someone will dangle a substantive deal to him and whisk him away.   You say no-one will be interested until he gets promoted, I disagree.  The Cowley's haven't got Lincoln a league promotion yet they clearly had suitors last summer.  Paul Tisdale hadn't got Exeter promoted yet he (albeit having seen his contract run down) walked straight into a job that I don't doubt paid better.  You can almost see it, Lincoln get promoted and their managers are poached by say Peterborough, Lincoln in turn look up the A46 and recognise the job Jolley and his team have done, dangle a 3-year deal with the promise of all the backroom support he wants.  We end up with six-months compensation.

Jolley's stock will be rising and it's poor business if we're not trying to tie him down.  He's an asset, just like any of our players.

I can't really get away from this tbh.

For what it's worth, I'm very much a flag waver for Jolley and have been pretty much all along. But you just know that three defeats down the line, the tone will revert to "out of his depth". It's depressing, but it's football.

A 6 month rolling contract means nothing to other clubs.  I agree with others that whilst there was a few bad results (my beef was when he changed the system after winning), I do think MJ is building something good.

The 3 year deal is all about protecting the club and getting something in return for our asset.  It will mean the smaller LG1 clubs will stay away unless they can afford to pay us the compensation.  Sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture, if MJ left for another team, say that was in our division, we would have to start again from scratch, and there is no guarantees the next manager would continue the build, he'll probably pull it to shreds.

Take PH as soon as we get promoted lower end league 1 teams were sniffing.  (although PH didn't get it, MJ does)

For me it boils down to frustration.  Frustrated as I know the players can play, they just need to be consistent.   I would also imagine that others may have felt the same, or apprehensive as we seem to have this "looking over our shoulder mentality".  I'm sick of looking down, and now its time we started looking up and forward.

If they are on 6 month rolling contracts the if they seem to be doing a good job, then it’s so easy for a failing quite small club, like say Shrewsbury to poach them.

Well, he’s been here nearly a year. So if we give him a 3 year contract (presumably until May 2022) that would take him to over 4 years as Town manager.

Don't forget there have been calls for his head as well, probably by the same people now demanding an extension to his contract!

https://forum.thefishy.co.uk/Blah.pl?m-1538237101/s-0/

I'd offer him a new deal in a heartbeat but we've had some very sticky patches under his stewardship

People worrying about how much compensation we get for MJ (if anyone ever wanted him) might like to check the GTFC club accounts and work out where £200,000 of the Omar Boyle money went.

Don't forget there have been calls for his head as well, probably by the same people now demanding an extension to his contract!

I'd offer him a new deal in a heartbeat but we've had some very sticky patches under his stewardship

You have to look why we had those bad patches Rob,

Injuries and suspensions have played there part,

You must admit his latest signing are a cut above what we have been used to lately.

Another window in the summer like the last one and even I who does not bet will put a few quid on us going up.

People worrying about how much compensation we get for MJ (if anyone ever wanted him) might like to check the GTFC club accounts and work out where £200,000 of the Omar Boyle money went.

Pretty irrelevant where it goes. Even if it goes towards paying off debt to Fenty that's still money that the club has benefitted from for losing a promising manager (hypothetically) rather than getting diddly squat.

A man who sits between Amond and Hoban in the 15-16 Irish strikers list.

I've just read that thread back Rob and, to be honest, many thought that he deserved October to put it right and he did. There have been very few poor performances since Morecambe at home (Macc at home, Cambridge away spring to mind) and we have been more prolific in front of goal.

More than that, he looks like being the first GTFC manager to have us finish in the top half of a League table for 13 years!

You need the right players to play 3 5 2.

We are now looking like the correct players are in the right positions and the defense has drastically improved.

Let's see how far the rest of this season pans out, 14 winable games to go !!

3 years when he is doing well, 1 week when he is doing badly. Maybe six months is about right? It's fairly cheap to replace him and if a bigger club comes in for him then at least we get some money.

The guy is still learning a difficult job.
