Hello fishy folks? After a long debate with my brother who decided he wasn’t up to much, I would like video proof or just messages to prove that Steve is a legend! R’ kid has him down as overrated...

Not overrated just had him down as a Barry Conlon type and don't seem to hear much about his footballing ability. Before my time sadly, first half decent striker i remember is mickey boulding.

Livvo and Conlon in the same breath??? Livvo miles better that that dipsomaniac. A beast of a striker.  We called him the centaur forward.

Batch, Crombie, Moore K, Wiggington, Cumming, Waters, Bonnyman, Ford, Emson, Drinkell, Whymark. Love you all, You are the reason I'm on here. You've had help from Todd, Handyside, Futcher P, Groves, Mendonca, Macca etc etc etc. Up The Mariners!!!!!!!!!

Sorry son, but he clearly was before your time if you considered him a Barry Conlon type.

Livvo is a legend as the OP suggests. Not the quickest or most prolific of forwards but an intelligent player, comfortable on the ball, who could hold up play and bring other players into the game. Our first Wembley win came about following his introduction as a sub. One of my favourite memories of him is him coming on at 2-0 down away at Ipswich and almost single-handedly changing things round resulting in us getting a very creditable 2-2 draw.

Also capable of mixing it with the beefiest of defenders and had a memorable 'incident' with Villa player Shaun Teale at BP which led to both players being sent off. This was surely the inspiration for Sergeant Whittle's elbow on Shearer.

Barry Conlon is not fit to tie Livvo's laces. (He'd probably be toopissed to do it anyway).

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Mixed it with the best of em at Championship level.....a great strike partner for Mendonca, Nogan, Lester.....

Statistics do tell a story but never the whole story.

Steve Walsh. Ended up being smashed into the post by Jack Lester as Livvo caused such chaos Kasey Keller knocked out Julian Watts

Could also do a solid job at centre back, something that was fairly common then, but doesn't seem to happen these days.

This is one of my favourite memories of Livvo.

Can also remember how sick I felt after he was knocked out by Higginbotham, I knew it must be serious because they didn't move him for what seemed like for ever.

Livvo was loved by the town fans he gave his all every time he pulled on a town shirt a real powerhouse striker and this was in the championship !!! One of his best goals for me was a diving header away at Notts county that’s the one that sticks in my mind, not heard much of what he’s doing of late or whether he’s still involved in football or not.

Best memory I have of Livvo is being stood outside Park lane at 2.30 on a Saturday morning, smashed out his head, having a right laugh with him, then watching him come out the tunnel for the warm up that afternoon... absolute legend and a real nice bloke too..

Think he lived on Weelsby Road near the roundabout and sure he had a L1VVO private plate. Not that I stalked him or anything....

From a colourful family in Boro...

Livvo was a beast of a striker how we could do with him now.. That Leicester game he battered em!

Think all the striking partners benefited greatly from playing alongside him.

Was Sat in the Main stand when Higginbottom took him out looked awful and very deliberate.

Interesting interview here with Livvo about his career. Notable for the way the club treat him when he had to leave -

“The way it ended for me at Grimsby left a sour taste in the mouth”, he said. “I was due a testimonial but, after 10 years at the club, they just never phoned me and ignored me completely.”

Wonder who might’ve been behind that decision.

As Abdul said, he was an impressive centre back when needed too.
I think we once played QPR and he had to play CB and was up against a guy called Dicchio (not sure of spelling) who was about 6ft 8inches tall and I believe played in Serie A for a top club too. Livvo was brilliant that day, just used his strength and experience to snuff out any threat.

Yep Danny Dicchio.  Livo is a legend pure and simple.... He had a naughty steak to his game like the push in the Leicester win and Teales shirt lol.  I think he drove a black BMW.

He was a hero.
Great on and off the pitch..
Think I'm right in saying he doesn't remember a great deal about his time with time because of that horrendous head injury.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Nearly 300 games for Town, 40 odd goals, numerous assists all but one season in what is the Championship and that one season promoted from the now 1st Division. Hit the post many times. Played center  back as well. I didn't think he was the same after the assault by Higginbotham. Blackburn paid 450000 and Chelsea 350000 in the early 90's.
A true UTM legend.

I love it and I hate it when these great clips are posted. Wonderful to watch but really pisses me off when I see what a fantastic team we had then. Difficult to see any of the current squad getting a game against those who played that night.

Absolutely brilliant and that Leicester side were no slouches either

Loved the shirt that season too

No wonder old farts like me are constantly harping on about the past

I remember being sat in the Main Stand once and Livvo was more or less on the touchline facing us when he tried an audacious (Tony Rees) back heel only for the ball to catch his trailing foot and it went out for a throw in to the opposition. I took my life in my hands and shouted " No Livvo...please leave those to the experts" to which he looked up at me and just grinned and nodded! Top player and top bloke!

Vastly underrated in my opinion. Predominantly a big man bought to give us an alternative but he was my most definitely no slouch on the deck either.

Genuinely just a hard player who you just wouldn't want to mess with. The Teale clip always makes me smile when they walk off together shaking hands and smiling having tried to kill each other seconds before.  Don't get that these days.

In the modern game Livvo would last about three seconds every game.  Probably one of the last of the proper physical type players who could give it, take it and then laugh about it afterwards.

The battering he gave Leicester is the obvious memory but the one a few years later against Tranmere's John Achterberg was probably more important and was crucial in avoiding the drop that year.

Livo was a fully committed Player who never went missing so to speak  you knew when when he put the shirt on he was up for it, lacked pace but had the skill to play at Championship level scored some memorable goals for us and was truly liked.

Livvo,

Big strong fearless a players player,

He made things happen in the box for his strike partners,

When he finished playing he said he loved being at Grimsby every game was a battle,

AND

He was up for it every game.

Didn't he get his skull fractured against derby when we was in the old 2nd division. Think it was a bald headed dirty Italian that did it! Can't remember his name?

He was knocked out by Danny Higginbottom in that match and it took about 14minutes to get him treated and stretchered off,

The Italian Ravernelli   ( excuse spelling) wanted the game called off because he was so upset and thought Livvo was going to die.

Solid, 100% effort, never shirked anything , great foil for other maybe quicker or skillfull partners.....such a sad end when that tw@t Higgingbottom went through the back of him...stretchered off, fractured skull but says it all about the man that he came back after that inury...it was a shame, although entirely understandble that he looked more nervous as player after that and had lost something from his game.

Also a player of that era that used to frequent meggies on a Saturday night so mixed with fans freely.  Had a mate from Middlesborough who did say that Livvo's family were quite notorious up there and not a family to mess with...he embodied that on the pitch.

Still boo whenever Higgingbottom turns up as a pundit on TV or radio. Tw@t.

18 months ago Livo was groundstaff for DB Cargo in Tyne Yard....not sure if still there as we have had some redundancy since then but will check when next at work .......if only so the club would know how to contact him if they wanted to invite him to a game

<*(((><

Town have given me some of my highest highs and my lowest lows ........ God it is like a marriage

Was that in Sept 97 when we hadn't won at all until that day?

Interesting interview here with Livvo about his career. Notable for the way the club treat him when he had to leave -

“The way it ended for me at Grimsby left a sour taste in the mouth”, he said. “I was due a testimonial but, after 10 years at the club, they just never phoned me and ignored me completely.”

Wonder who might’ve been behind that decision.

If that's true it's a wrong that needs righting.

Livvo is still working up north on the railway for DB and I had the pleasure of chatting to him recently and telling him how much of a legend he is. I asked him if he ever fancied popping down for a game and he politely batted the question away and said he wouldn’t set foot in the ground anytime soon, I didn’t know about the testimonial thing at the time though.

Livvo would run through a brick wall for the team and frequently did. Remember him getting knocked out against Ipswich? when he put his head where others would have pulled out.

I’d have him in our team now. According to an ex town player I spoke to he’s not the same person since the fractured skull.  He didn’t go to a reunion they had.

Absolute legend/cult hero of the Club.

To mention him in the same breath as Barry flipping Conlon should be a criminal offence.

Was never the same player after the fractured skull as he never really challenged for headers properly again after that. Was probably understandably wary of doing some more damage to it, but it hampered a big part of his game unfortunately.

Shame about the testemonial story/quote SkaFace has put up. I'd not seen or heard of that before today.

I thought he was a bit of a donkey - no pace and limited footballing skills.

Before you all leap on me his best goals tally was 11 and averaged 4 per season. Not a startling record for one of the main strikers. You knew whenever he won the ball and was heading one on one to the keeper that A) he would be caught and tackled by a defender, or B)  he would kick it straight at the keeper or over the bar.   We have had far better

The only thing in question here is, he your real brother and is he really a Town fan, Livvo may not have scored a bucket full of goals for us, there was far more to his play and what he contributed help generate that great team spirit we had back then. Livvo was the type of player to run through brick walls, rebuild them then run back through them again and again, someone who got stuck in and had that guile were are currently sadly missing.

In short your kid needs to give his head a wobble.

Livvo was my favourite player back in the "Glory Days", he gave 100% for Town and was a hard old fashioned centre forward. He was also a top bloke off the pitch, so down to earth and would freely interact with fans. I got to know him quite well  as he lived just a few doors down from me. He had two sons at the time(maybe had more kids later), his oldest son Frankie was a bit older than my eldest lad, he was always round our house and was football mad, constantly kicking a ball around with him, for his age he was very talented and I thought he would have made it as a pro footballer, but never heard of him making it in football, he would have been gutted as he lived and breathed the game. His younger son, think he might have been named Jake, was just a baby at the time, but did hear as others have mentioned, that he later had a trial for Town, but nothing seems to have come of it after. One thing that most fans never realised about Livvo, was that he was constantly struggling with a long term back problem. I think that this injury limited his career at a higher level. I know that it caused him a lot of pain at times and would see him hobbling around his garden and think there is no way he will be playing Saturday and yet his determination got him through it and out he would run come 3pm. Why he never got a testimonial is a disgrace, it was a pleasure to watch him play and it was a pleasure to have known him. UTM

The man is a Grimsby Town Legend and rightly so
His chip at Stoke
Single handed lay turning round the Leicester game
The impact on the he Wembley match
His ability to play up front or centre back
His general hardness, you didn’t intercourse with Livvo

We're all entitled to see things differently.

The fact that so many people see Livvo as a legend means he is a legend.

It's not about how good a player someone is, it's about how they're seen. We all have opinions about how good someone was or was not. We're split down the middle about, say, the Shop, but I doubt many of his fans would see him as a legend ('good servant of the club' maybe). Then there are players like Disley, who most will see as a legend even though he never achieved the heights our players from the 80s and 90s achieved.

I don't see Livvo as a legend but I also couldn't remember him being with us 10 years. When you think that Dis got a testimonial, it's pretty unfair that Livvo didn't, especially as he effectively suffered a career-ending injury in the Black & White.

You do not judge a player just on how many goals he scored,

It was the commitment bravery and passion that Livvo showed that made him a legend.

Perhaps not the greatest Striker I have ever seen here but definitely, the bravest that sickening injury by Higgingbottom was one of the worst I have seen here.

The crowd was silent as the medics were desperately trying to bring him around I really feared for his life it was one of those you do not want to see happen to anyone.

It looked deliberate on Higginbottom's part as Livvo was causing him problems.

Livo was a no-nonsense centre forward target man that would put himself about and bring in others with his hold up play part of A.B's great team of the late 90's and the auto glass trophy side.

Thing I remember about the Livvo injury is that they had to bring a bucket of sand onto the pitch after he'd been stretchered off to soak up some of the blood.

My view is that Higginbotham decided to clatter him but obviously didn't expect to inflict such a bad injury. He claims complete innocence in his autobiography, of course, but it looked too late to be an accident to me.

Exactly Pete. When Diz went I said something similar on here. Iit’s not always about ability - personal traits play a huge part in fan’s favourites making the step up to legend status.

Can't beliecve nobody has mentioned the FA Cup 3rd round tie v Stockport that her turned around with two goals in stoppage time! We were losing 2-1, Livvo equalised and then popped up with the winner, having come on as a sub. It was one of the best games I've been to at BP purely for the pandemonium when the turnaround was complete.

Yeah I remember that, wasn't that the year when the 3rd round was oddly played in December too?  Can't quite remember what the justification for bringing it all forward a month was.

There was a similar late turnaround a few seasons later in the League Cup against Wolves, I think? At BP, same scenario - we were losing 2-1 and then scored two late goals (one a debut goal for Rowan) and Allen got the other. I think.

But Livvo... they don't make them like him any more. Sure, you have brute strength and massive height still, but players like Rhead, Akinde and the like (not just Lincoln strikers) are well short of Livvo's all-round game.

Yes, not a prolific striker, but when you talk about committed...

It was Bradley Allen.

11/12/1999 - FA Cup

Grimsby 3 - Steve Livingstone (34, 89), Bradley Allen (90)
Stockport 2 - Alan Bailey (63), Ian Thomas-Moore (81)

Livvo started the game. Bradley Allen came on for Jack Lester in the 80th minute and had the impact in turning the game around.

I see that " Cod Almighty " has today joined the call for a wrong to be put right and that Livvo should have a testimonial to honour his long service & general 100% Mariner cult status. Don't know by whom or how this could be " righted "?.

Could be P.F. abolished the reserve set up much to Paul Groves annoyance and tried to oust Jevons and Coyne out for refusing a pay cut.

for some reason I had a feeling that there was a fee due if Jevons played x number of games and that's why we stopped playing him. I'm probably wrong.

I recall something along those lines too. Didn't he go on loan to Hull as it would have cost us had he played one more game for us?

I think 100k was owed to Everton.  And I don't think Jevons played for us again after that.  I was gutted.

Yeah he went on loan there for the season. The next season, he didn't play for us until November, but I can't remember how it got sorted - vaguely remember something about him giving up his appearance money?

Jevons re-negotiated the terms of his contract very reluctantly, I seem to recall. He had a massive falling out with Furneaux at the start of the season and basically got ignored until Graham Rodger began playing him in the reserves, where he started banging in the goals.

Under his new terms, he was free to play for the first team but Groves only began playing him in late November, on Rodger's recommendation.

Initially he was played wide left, which I don't think he was happy about, and then when Groves was sacked he was given a free role, which is when he scored those 4 goals against Barnsley.

At the end of the season he scooped just about every POTY award - plus Goal of the Season - and credited Rodger in particular for rescuing his career.

After all that turmoil I don't think anyone blamed him for leaving. I was just shocked that it was for Yeovil. He'd scored about 12-13 goals in half a season in League 1 yet signed for a League 2 side.

You could say it was in a quarter of a season, seeing as he downed tools after that Barnsley game!

My abiding memory of that Barnsley game was Isaiah Rankin winding up the Barnsley fans after he scored.

He was actually on loan from Barnsley at the time (not allowed these days to play against your parent club). He never went back to Barnsley after that I don't think and signed for us until the end of the season.

Peter Handyside played for Barnsley that day too if I remember right.

Mine was all the Barnsley fans wanting to leave before halftime and not being allowed to.

Gally missed a penalty in front of the Town fans at Oakwell. I think the game finished 0-0. Barnsley had Vodka Kick on their shirts that day which was quite apt for Gally.

Just had a quick Google and Handyside did play for Barnsley that day.

I went to that Barnsley game (don't make it to too many away matches) and my abiding memory is the Town fans singing, "We love you Galli, we do" after the penalty miss when he'd been getting grief throughout the game before then! I think he may even have had a chuckle himself.

I see the Telegraph picked up on this topic:
https://www.grimsbytelegraph.c.....-call-former-2504472
The interesting thing for me, is that if you scroll down to the bottom below the main article, there is a " Comments " section. In the comments there is one long one " supposedly" from the man himself " Livo". In this day and age, you can never be sure that this comment is genuinely from him, but it reads very much as though it is from him, very touching about his time in Grimsby and well worth a read.
p.s. thought the easiest thing would be to copy and paste the comment from the article onto here. Like I said earlier, can never be sure it is really made by him.

Thanks for all the comments in this article, it's good to be remembered after all this time. But then again we all had a brilliant time in that era, some top class players and top class lads. Will always have the best memories of our time at Grimsby particularly under Alan Buckley.  The only regret was that I never got the chance to thank the fans for the support I got through thick and thin. The supporters always backed us home and away when I returned to my home town Middlesbrough it was often said to me how good the support was at Grimsby. I was lucky enough to be part of a special time at the club and to meet some fantastic people in and around the club, the supporters and the players. Again Thanks for the brilliant comments and the brilliant memories.   It would have been an honour to have had a testimonial and the chance to say goodbye to all the supporters who had supported me for ten years with all the many friends I made and the top players I was fortunate to play with.

Thanks. Livo
