Maybe we could make a move in the summer for this specific player if Jolley is still interested.

If it's the Nigerian lad, the deal could still happen as he's classed as a free agent isn't he?

Is Embleton still out of contract at Sunderland in the Summer? Tried to sign him permanently maybe? The Nigerian lad wouldn't justify the way Jolley is talking woild he?

Yes he would. Search for him on YouTube. Not only an excellent player, but appears to be a good character too.

Glad to hear that the board are "ambitious" and came together to back the manager. Keep saying it- speculate to accumulate. If we can get a good attacking team down at BP and get the buzz back, the fans will respond in numbers. I know loads who have stopped going because they got bored of the stuff on offer, and most of them would be back if they think there's something worth paying for.

The way the side plays is half the battle in attracting the fans. The other half is the direction the team is moving in the table. It is alright to tell people to be patient, work in progress, in MJ we trust, we play good football and all that ........ but human nature is predictable. There are a lot of people who have left the fold during the down slide and they will say  OK, I’ve been more than patient, you be patient if you want, I’ll wait until there’s goals, points in the bag, a positive movement up the table and a play off challenge looking possible before I come back to BP.

I care and although it didn't happen, I see it as an extremely positive thing as it shows the management team that the board have similar ambitions.

It's exactly this that, when a "bigger" club comes calling, may make the difference in Jolley jumping ship or staying.

I'm not sure the fans will come back in droves just because we're playing attractive stuff.

Look at the gates when we had back-to-back promotions under Buckley, continually gave the bigger boys in the second tier a bloody nose and then under Brian Laws in 1995/96 started to produce (in my opinion) the best football I've ever seen a Town side play - to the point we were, again in my opinion, genuinely a signing or two away from being a real promotion challenger.  We also achieved that when our best striker (Super Clive) was on the treatment table for the best part of a year.

1990-1991     7,237 (promoted from third to second tier)
1991-1992     6,915
1992-1993     6,088
1993-1994     6,075
1994-1995     5,921
1995-1996     5,865
1996-1997     5,640 (relegated from second to third tier)

From 1992-93 when we established ourselves as a very good second tier side to 1995-96 when we peaked under Laws (probably up to the Ivano incident) the gates managed to decrease.  The Ivano factor felt like it added loads onto the gates but it obviously wasn't that big of a factor.

Why do you think those gates decreased year on year, do we have the price info for that period I.e. were people getting priced out of attending?

Hmmm, wonder if the 'agonisingly close' player was Angol?

We tried to sign him at the start of the season and were linked with him again (if only by rumour). From what I've read about him, it wouldn't surprise me if he's the type who would be happy to be a bit-part player at the top of the division as opposed to a regular in mid-table.

I suppose he might also think he would be more likely to put himself in the shop window at the club doing better.

I'm not saying the attendances will jump massively, but there was under 4 thousand there for the last home game, and we can get a couple of thousand onto that with better fare on offer. Over a season, that's a lot of extra dosh, but to get them back and keep them there takes better players, playing attractive football. The players bring the crowds and the crowds bring the players.

The cup run was a good start and brought in some much needed extra income. If we invest it wisely, we can start to look upward.

Bit of a funny time for attendances in general in the 90s. Can remember Sheff Utd struggling to get 10k for some games and teams like Chelsea only getting 13-15k at times. A lot more than local influences affecting gates at BP in that period. Poor attendances everywhere not just here..

There was also a recession during the early 1990s as well. That will have affected incomes somewhat for a few years and probably contributed to some of the drop in attendance.

Back to the 'speculate to accumulate' argument - clearly hasn't worked at Notts County - but an extra 1000 on your average gate brings in potentially £400k a season.

I can remember a Tuesday night game towards the end of the first Buckley era in what is now The Championship. We played Port Vale and beat them 4-1 playing some great football. The crowd was something like 3200 odd. Not long after Buckley left for West Brom.

There was less than 3,000 for the first game of the season in Buckley's first season in 1988. Low gates are not a recent phenomenon and experienced by many administrations over the years. It's not exclusive to the " Fenty Years " !!!

I’d like to not care and not know who we’ve missed out on - but I’d like to know what Jolley sees as ambitious and significant. It’d tell us a lot about where the club sees itself too.

Never said they were exclusive to the Fenty years. I'm well aware of the fluctuating attendances, having been one of those at the game you mention.

I replied to your post but it wasn't specifically aimed at you, just to point out that many years ago we still had an indifferent fan base. You will remember some of those hard times but a lot of the younger Mariner fans think it wasn't like that then.

When we were in non league I thought our gates stood up well even more so when you think who we were playing and only having 20 or 30 odd away fans in the Osmond.

Did the board speculate, we offloaded more players than we brought in (and I dont count Robles in that) and they may be better quality but does not mean the board gave any transfer or cup money to the wage budget, above the preseason agreement, Jolly wasn't going to say the board didn't support me is he.

But to be fair he didn't have to praise the board either if they haven't backed him in the transfer market.

When we were in non league I thought our gates stood up well even more so when you think who we were playing and only having 20 or 30 odd away fans in the Osmond.

Exactly right Pete. That is what I said about human nature. People are not just attracted by good football, they like the idea that their team is likely to win.

I know we all say the right things about rather have a good game and lose than a crap game and win but by and large we want points. We want to climb the division we are in. That’s why we got bigger crowds on the way up the leagues in the 1970s and 1990s than we did in the championship even allowing for the bigger clubs in there. We are not unique in that respect.

I think Dennis could be a good signing. I am happy the board appears to be backing the manager in ambition. I appreciate Jolley is an advocate of the sort of football I like.  But I will be happier still once we get some hard evidence of progress, some goals and some points and move up the table.

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”

There was less than 3,000 for the first game of the season in Buckley's first season in 1988. Low gates are not a recent phenomenon and experienced by many administrations over the years. It's not exclusive to the " Fenty Years " !!!

Forever the apologist for shite attendances and performances on the pitch over the past twenty years. Always comparing them to other smaller snapshots in our history when we were at our lowest ebb as justification. What is exclusive to the Fenty years are the lowest ebb of attendances and finishing positions in the football pyramid for the longest sustained period. Fucksake, there were plenty of periods when our attendances and finishing positions were higher too, but it seems to be not the done thing to do to point that out. Where we are is not acceptable, home crowds, positions in the league and the average standard of entertainment. Point out another eighteen year period in our history that matches the Fenty years for home attendances and league finishing positions. Nope there isn't one. The drop in attendances during the Buckley years matched those of pretty much every team in that period and was not exclusive to us as a club, yet many of those teams have recovered to make massive increases since then. Let's all wallow about and justify being mediocre because we were mediocre for the odd season in the past and forget all of the reasons why we've arrived at this sustained mediocrity. Bores the arsse of me this "living on past glories accusation" mentality. So self-defeating..

People can say we've never had great attendances but neither had Lincoln till recently. Who would have thought they'd be sold out with all, or close to all being Season tickets?

I would have thought our closet Town fans have always been far greater than Lincoln with the club deeply engrained in the psyche of the area what with our proud history. So, we must be of the opinion the potential IS there if things are done right. They are the yardstick of what can be achieved.

Our area might not be quite as affluent but it's a larger population and catchment area.

Why do you think those gates decreased year on year, do we have the price info for that period I.e. were people getting priced out of attending?

It has got cheaper since to buy a Man U shirt on ebay, watch a premier league game in a pub and call yourself a football supporter.

Probably Angol based on earlier rumours. Lincoln fans seem to think he'll need two shirts, one for him and one for his ego

Attendances suffer also through cash, the town has a  low earning  population but the club want to charge premium prices. Its ok when the team are doing well and the part timers come out of the woodwork but when the chips are down they are nowhere to be seen.
The problem i find here is People know at the club the price doesn't match the wages in the area, they should know they made a fortune of the back of paying these people a minimum wage.
Im at work today in a fish factory from 4-30am to earn the money for the next home match because what i earn during the week only covers bills, i dont work today and the next game im sat listening to the radio.

Reading between the lines of what MJ said in his pre match interview it's someone who's gone on loan until the end of the season as he dies say it's 'something that could be revisited in the future'...would bother me though if the player chose another team over us this time that he would only come here if he got no other offers...if I were Jolley I'd park it and move on .

Bogle?
Dropping down the leagues - Cardiff, Bham, Pompey
On loan to Pompey - so that fits in with MJ's "we might be able to make something happen in the future" cos it's not soemone on a 2/3 year deal perhaps?
It would be a striker I would think
Not Angol IMO - hardly a "fantastic signing"

But hate myself for picking a player who's played for us - not very imaginative!

Who's apologising for low gates or shite performances over the last 20 years? Certainly not me. I'm just showing some statistics that demonstrate we have been down this path before but obviously not for such a long period. I want our club to succeed as much as the next fan but I don't keep banging on about it all being down to JF. As a point of interest JF only became Chairman in 2004 so for your 20 year period of failure the three previous chairmen , Carr, Everitt and Furneaux must surely shoulder some of the blame? If you don't like my differing view to yours on the subject and it " bores the arsse " off you then may I offer you a suggestion and don't read my posts. I  agree you do have a point of view on this subject and respect your ability to express that view. Therefore at least have the common courtesy to respect my view as much as it differs from yours.
