I'm confused. Has Grayson slotted into a back three or a midfield three?

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Tragically poor defending there. What's the point in playing five defenders if you're not going to stop them putting crosses in, and then not going to mark Doidge in the middle of the six yard box. Appalling.

Shocking defending for that, Ring let in a cheap cross and Greyson I think it was was no where near his man, usual from Town

not a fan of 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 it invites too much pressure for me.  C'mon town get at em.

We were the better team at the time of the goal.
Town players heads have gone down.
Caldwell and Vernum very ineffective in the final third at the moment 😤

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

We're very average at best and shite at worst lets face it.

That late December run really flattered us (P Vale, Exeter luck like that can't last)

Need to somehow get something out of this, five defeats on the bounce and it would be the start of the slippery slope yet again

Rose gives the ball away and they immediately scythe through the middle of our defence, only for Harry Davis to save us with a fantastic sliding goal-line clearance. We have too many passengers in the team. I do not see what Rose offers us, other than the ability to take penalties.

Not convinced by Ring

I'm sat here wondering is Ring still rusty/not used to the system/speed of league 2 football or have we been duped.

And would love to see our records playing a 352 532 or whatever you wanna call it against when we played with 4 at the back..

We go on a great run playing a 433 lose a game then straight back to 5 at the back and whenever we played it it never works.

Why ? The players seemed comfortable and we looked good were on the other hand we look excrement playing with 3 centre backs.

Baffling.

Great save from Russel and town just standing still not playing to the whistle rather then clearing the ball.

Poor opening 10 minutes, good 20 minutes without really threatening, concede a goal and fall apart. I think that sums up the first half.

Game over............. for those poor fornicators who traveled I'd come home now.

Big learning for MJ if your going to play a team that have practically never played together don't try and pay a formation that they may not be used to. Also just keep the same bloody defense for 2 games in a row, why drop Whitmore?

Park the principles and grind our results until you get to 50 points please.

started well but we are defending 90% of the game and thats the issue for me, were is the attacking intent.  Definately need something in the 2nd half.

Not a good half that. Look ropey at the back and toothless up front.

352 leaving us exposed. Ring has struggled in his games so far and needs to get with the pace. Cardwell was clean through and panicked then stood on the ball.

Not a panic merchant, or negative keyboard warrior
And follow the team and support the boys but couldn’t make it tonight like many
Feeling worried about things again though
We just seem to lack any bite or threat and haven’t done well now since Exeter
We did show signs of promise but if this form continues we are in for a long last third of a season

I’m not sure about changing your playing system in the middle of a season. I’m not sure about Ring, but I am sure that Cardwell isn’t good enough, reminds me of Michael ‘Bungle’ Jeffrey.

Watching on iFollow and that was an absolutely terrible 1st half, don’t think we’ve strung more than 3 passes together. Forest Green bigger, stronger and first to all of the loose balls. Ring has had a nightmare, he is so ponderous and his distribution is terrible. No threat up front again, Thomas has done his best but he looks so isolated. Vernam and Cardwell haven’t got on the ball at all, mainly because we’ve given it away before we’ve had the chance to get it up to them. Think the 3-5-2 needs a lot more work.

Not good tonight but we all knew it was going to be a season of inconsistency before a ball was kicked. Too much dead wood last season, building for next. It’ll come, we will finish mid table and push on next year. We all knew that anyway

Poor defending, first a free header, second and one of 3 could have put it in the net, too static, no anticipation. Oh and as usual no goal threat at the other end, otherwise we are ok!!!

Might have been tongue in cheek but he is a sight better than this shite. System all wrong-am sorry to say losing faith in Jolly. We are not playing to our strengths because we don't have any. The whole system is set up to be defensive  Where are our new players because the way we are playing we are one of the worst in the division. Don't say we are in transition because that excuse has long gone.

No goal threat
Feels like you're just waiting for opposition to score
Cardwell has no presence or goal threat but it's hard for him to develop if he doesn't play and MJ obviously rates him with new contract
Still don;t think we will go down but it is getting worrying again

Cook? Something must have gone on cos surely he'd be worth a place in a team that can't score

We were playing okay without creating anything up to the first goal.
Just like the bad old days the teams heads dropped.
Rose, Ring, Caldwell and Vernum just not doing it.

Think we need at least one change at half time.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Not good tonight but we all knew it was going to be a season of inconsistency before a ball was kicked. Too much dead wood last season, building for next. It’ll come, we will finish mid table and push on next year. We all knew that anyway

Mate, you need to take rose tinted specs off....we are awful and it seems to be getting worse... Macclesfield are improving and we are looking down and certainly heading long into another relegation dog fight.  Forget building for next season because at this rate that'll be in the conference, concentrate on this sesson...

How the fvck cardwell gets a shirt every week is beyond me.

I'm sorry, I know we're all supposed to be constantly postive but he isn't up to it. Not by a long way. Surely Akeem Rose deserves his chance as from what I've seen he has genuine raw pace and isn't aftraid to shoot. We're awful and in decline yet again.

Makes you wonder how we can leave a man totally unmarked 6 yards out when we are playing with 3 centre backs??

Shocking only time we have been near touching it in their box is from corners, wingbacks have not overlapped once, Ring intent on giving 5 yrd passes to FGR at every opportunity. No real pace anywhere, every pass is laboured and squarte or to a player marked with their back to goal. Defensively we are relying on midfielders to try and chase down FGR overlaps (often too late as they need to make up 10-15 yards on them ) rather than one of 3 centre halfs coming out wide
Expected to say at h/t looks like we have a decent ref for a change but woeful decision nr the end it was a perfect clean tackle by Ohman.
Dont know what hje can do to change it other than go 442 get A Rose on for his pace and scare Gavin 'this is so easy I havn't had to break out of a jog yet' Gunning. Cardwell running round lots but not linking with Thomas/Vernam they all seem to be 30 yrds from each other when they get the ball,
I am getting so frustrated

That free kick given against us is flipping unreal. I mean we are bad enough without being constantly on the end of bad decision. Its not even close to a foul.          https://mobile.twitter.com/pganderson/status/1087811263256772610

We are always in transition apparently. We are always "building something" which is code for we haven't got the budget to compete, so we are going to build it slowly as cheap as we can.

He wasn't for 95% of last season.

I just feel like what jolley is trying to do is a bit overly optimistic, the system is a popular system in football right now that is supposed to be highly adaptable in defence and attack, but when you've got wes thomas not sergio aguero, and charles vernam not eden hazard, and youre playing against league 2 defenders with league 2 referees, just seems like our forward threat will be easily drowned out and we'll have to work twice as hard.

Still feel akheem rose should be starting over cardwell, if we must keep playing this way

Jolleys a much smarter guy than me but im just a bit lost with where this system is going

The match threads when we win are much shorter 🤔 .. we are what we are , currently a bottom half league two team . Hopefully we survive and  after a few more windows , eventually have a squad with the right skill sets to take us somewhere ... thought we was making progress a month a go , seem to have taken a step back again , all very frustrating UTM ◾️◽️◾️◽️

Cardwell is rubbish. I understand he's relatively young and inexperienced, but he hasn't shown any signs of development at all in a season and a half. In that time he's contributed a grand total of one league goal (a tap in anyone would have scored) and two assists. Not remotely good enough for an attacking player.

Compare him to someone like Clifton who has come on leaps and bounds over the last year and is now a pivotal part of our team (I mean look how poor we've been since he went off against Macclesfield). Really can't see what Jolley sees in Cardwell and why we extended his contract recently.

To be fair, we've been getting hammered in most of the games we've won/drawn recently. I mean really hammered. Even going back to the northampton game which ended up being a good game/result, they hammered us for the majority of the game - we looked out of our depth
Barring the last few games this team has had an enormous amount of luck and it seems to have finally run out
Hopefully we can scrap a result in the next game - definitely settle for a point now
Thank intercourse we've had Embleton though- the positivity that's surrounded him has made our season. Oh and Mckeown
Never mind. Once we get everyone fit hopefully we'll go again and start picking up points. Lots of changes and lots of bad luck recently hasn't helped

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Ohman and Ring must be wandering if they’ve made a mistake, lost every game they’ve played in including the reserve game

Turned it off now can't stand any more.
Ring, Rose, Caldwell are shocking.
I really do like Jolly and the way he goes about his job but he has to start sorting this shower out very quickly.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I'm wondering if we've made a mistake signing them - Ring certainly. Looks like he has no idea how to defend or pass a ball to a teammate.

Talk about not learning from your mistakes...FGR battered us on the first day of the season when MJ played this formation so why on earth did he think tonight would work against a FGR team that have been consistent all season. ....the mind boggles and be interesting to see if he can try to put any positive slant on this game in his post match interview

To be fair to Ring we were supposed to be giving him a mini pre-season - yet he's been thrust straight in the deep end when will clearly be way off the pace.

Let's not make him a boo-boy just yet

Heres something no ones mentioned, Hall-johnson was brilliant against crystal palace at centre back. He got ONE chance after that partnering a 19 year old loanee who had just come back from injury. Then he's been left out and now we're playing another 19 year old loanee in his first ever league game.

Getting dicked twice by FGR in the same season. Almost seems surreal just thinking it, never mind seeing it happen.

Only positive i can see is that we started the season badly before sorting ourselves out, then had a load of injuries/suspensions and new players joining the side, so i'm hoping it's just another bedding in process and we will come good again when the fixtures get a bit easier and the players have settled down again.

I expected an up and down season, but this is going from one extreme to the other and back again.

I doubt hall Johnson would have made any difference but I agree, a kick in the face to him cos he needed games and just as he was coming good he gets dropped.

He said at half time the defence had played well & the midfield had worked its socks off.
Still compared with Mr Negative sat next to him hes probably just having a laugh.

Clutching at straws here.......we've had a tough run of games recently including an in form Macclesfield.

After Saturday some easier games coming up.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

maybe the players are bit despondent with the choice of system?  Hell knows, so frustrated i'm biting my lip.  I don't mind getting beat by a better team but i cant accept players not putting the effort in.

Like Lincoln, FGR have invested in their squad and it shows. In the meantime, we’re just happy to finish above the relegation zone. Trouble is that it’s now in our DNA, the norm rather than the exception.

But it won't....shoestring squad again and again... we're going to end up the bashing boys of league 2....So wish Fenty would own up to completely ruining this club and it's fortunes....and MJ to admit he got it wrong.  Sorry but tonight's shambles is all in his (MJ) shoulders

No money and it shows.
Trouble is we are now known as a struggling club.

Well it's back to the first game of the season isn't it? Back to a 3-5-2/5-3-2 and it seems that Jolley prefers this system but does he know how to effectively play this system? Only time will tell but I'm not confident

Without Clifton and Embleton in the team we literally have nothing going forward. Hopefully Ring will come good but needs dropping for a few games to bed in more slowly. Cardwell also needs dropping

maybe the players are bit despondent with the choice of system?  Hell knows, so frustrated i'm biting my lip.  I don't mind getting beat by a better team but i cant accept players not putting the effort in.

Look what happened at Man. Utd.

Just terrible, Clifton added a bit of bite and umph but way too late. Cant see this 532 working unless you have wingbacks with pace who play as wingers whjen we have possession and can run at people get to the byline and cross it, Ring does not look like he will ever be able to do that, I know hes not fully fit but Bobby Mitchell could outpace him at the moment. Get 2 real wingers and play 442, at least until we are way safe from a relegation struggle.

Mj - from zero to hero to zero again. Fickle.
Yes it has been a hard month but we will be safe and keep building.

Bit worrying all the same but as long as we finish mid table or higher I will be happy as it's not Slade ball and one player coming in could change the team. Bit like when Clifton came on tonight.

One game left to avoid the unenviable record of no goals or points in an entire month

Personally feel that a few comments are a bit harsh on Ring he's just moved to a new country having not played for weeks so his fitness is down.

Then expected to play 4 games in 10 days including reserve game last week feel he should have been eased into the team more steadily.

MJ already stated that Fox will play on Saturday as a final farewell, so I expect Ring to be dropped.

It’s freezing. Ok for first 15 mins. The rest was awful. On way home. Oh god that was dire. Had some decent beers in Nailsworth and that the only plus point of night. Fenty - you ‘green’ with envy at FGR? They’re a huge club after all and we should settle for that. I’ll be back travelling and spending my money watching Town - ‘wish you weren’t here’!

I sometimes lose track. Are we pro Jolley this week and going up or want him out and going down?

Jeez. Yes it was terrible tonight but unfortunately that’s going to happen occasionally. We have shown we are moving forward from let’s be honest a disaster last season which we survived when we had no right to. That isn’t changed quickly unless you have the money to throw at it, which we don’t.

I like Jolley but can’t quite see why he has changed a system that was, to a large extent, working. Also can’t quite work out how and why Cardwell seems to be ahead of Cook, Akheem and Vernam in the pecking order.

I can’t see us improving if we keep playing 352 instead of 442, I watched the game on iFollow like I do most away matches and to me the players just look confused, at one point Davis was on the wing into the box, Ring basically had 2 players to mark all match with no support, no overlapping, 5 players in the box but no ball in numerous times, everything you expect from 352 didn’t happen,

FGR wing back got man of match ahead of Doidge who scored 2 goals, that says it all for me. They play the formation how it should be,

Fair enough it could take time to execute it propley but we don’t have time before we know it a few more bad results we could be a few points off relegation then anything can happen.

Get to the 50 point mark on 442 then try 352 when our league status is safe, then have a whole pre season to nail it.

It’s not time the time to learn a new formation games soon catch up.

Seems we are playing with fire.

so that’s a 7-1 aggregate score against the Villagers this season,
I don’t call that progression as a club, far from it
We where rubbish tonight, average sat,  and rubbish v Macclesfield
Where’s the  Tranmere, Notts C and Exeter performances gone?

Never mind the polished words MJ
I want at least a point Sat and a goal would be great
Another Macc type performance and result sat just cannot be comprehended
Come on Town FFS!!

4 league losses on the bounce and not a goal to be seen - fans have every right to be concerned.
Thank intercourse we rode our luck over Xmas because we'd be right in it now.
A long way to go

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Well, listening to the MJ interview, it sounds like he's got to get rid of some to make room for others. I guess that's why Cook wasn't involved then.

I agree with Cook being set to leave but i would rather have him in the team ahead of Cardwell.

Jolley said after the Macclesfield game we are a team that finds it hard to break a team down that Parks the bus we play better-sat back and hitting teams on the break.

Clearly, FGR does not have this problem and found us easy.

FFS  Sorry but this is gash 3,5,2. only works if you have super fit wing backs with pace. creative midfielders plus decent men up front.

We sit deep inviting pressure but have no pace or ideas on how to get behind sides.counter attack and make chances.

The stats do not lie in almost EVERY GAME THIS SEASON.

We are constantly BEHIND ON POSSESSION, BEHIND ON SHOTS, AND BEHIND ON SHOTS ON TARGET.

We do give away more fouls, concede more corners than the other teams.

One other point worth noting, FGR left TWO players up front when defending a corner just saying.

FGR have done a real job on us twice and it hurts like hell if December showed promise January has been a disaster we have gone backwards in terms of ideas.

We are in a survival situation once again fifty points looks a mile away right now.

If you have the best 3/4 defenders in the world than playing on the break might work, but if you haven't all you are doing is inviting the opposition on.

Most evasive n defensive interview i think ive ever heard from MJ. Completely dodged or ignored the question re the system. And what an indictment of his players and selection when he admitted that 20 minutes of harry Clifton would earn him motm.a v sad sate of affairs. Basically admitted that theres no money to strengthen the squad.the only way we get anyone in is to let someone go whos on a similar wage. So much for the £250k fa cup windfall. Looks like that's going on some new floodlight bulbs and most importantly paying off some of those benign loans
All very dispiriting.

Two games of 352 against two of the top 6. One of whom will win the league and both of whom will have two of the biggest budgets in the division I'd imagine.

So let's not excrement our pants and demand 442 (which we've barely played all season) just yet.

I've read a few people saying it's a excrement system. It's not, obviously. Seemed to work ok for FGR tonight. Has strengths and weaknesses just like any other formation.
