I think when something is being checked by VAR the next time the ball goes out of play they stop the play to finish  the review. so in this case no sub could happen

The thing that surprised me though was that the ref gave a yellow but then changed it to a red on advice without even looking at the replay. To me, the ref is still the man in charge and the VAR is there, like the linesmen, to assist the ref. He should make the final decision and should be required to review the video evidence.
