Saw the same on Twitter. I've tweeted the Football Supporters Federation to ask if they can do that. Can hardly be considered a dangerous weapon.

Gulp. Hope the lads can give it a good go, but it would be miraculous if we came away with anything considering the makeshift defence and strong opposition.

Fair red. Went in way too fast and seen far lighter tackles than that given as a red. A stupid tackel to make two minutes into a game.

Yes i would've reacted differently, I'm old school and honest, enough to realise that he hardly touched me, might've been a foul and possibly a booking but not a red, not in my day. I remain convinced that they are trying to outlaw tackling.

Fans sound absolutely brilliant; wish I was there. Great scrambled stop by McKeown after rebound off post. Might need about fourteen more of those to sneak into draw for fourth round! Gutted to arrive to coverage after four minutes and see us down to ten!!?!?!!

I wouldn't argue that perhaps it was harsh and the yellow considering how early it was in the game, the probable over enthusiasm of the players representing the 'little' team and the Palace player's over-reaction would probably have been enough but FFS please don't lets go on and on about it for days / weeks saying it had any bearing on the result

Contrary to your belief, a player doesn't need to be injured for it to be a red card https://imgur.com/a/iGucbp1Reckless tackle - check Stupid tackle - check studs up - check no way near the ball - check Red card

Red cards should be about intent for me, and i don't think he intended the tackle to whack his shin. Bit high on the ball and his leg deflected up into his shin. Saying that, i can see why it was given. Hopefully we will get a good decision in our favour from VAR before the end of the game, to even things up.
Just wish we had our full strength 11 out on the pitch, because Palace don't look that great.

?? What on earth are you talking about? Are you suggesting two levels of referring in different competitions??
Challenges like that would never have got red cards like that in cup ties in years past, Atkinson originally got yellow out, Moss changed it to red. VAR will do no good to football, it’s already sanitising it.

We will have in the replay 😬

Can we use video evidence to appeal the red card, that would be interesting a VAR decision overturned by the panel
Absolutely no way it would get overturned. Check the previous post with the evidence.

It's a great shame about the red card, the game was already ruined given our players availability.
However, how embarrassing would it be for Palace to now draw this game? Let's go for the replay!

I agree. But we are in 2019,not the 60's Technically it was a red card backed up with VAR-course football is been sanitised, get used to it.

Think carefully about that. We might end up with even more red cards, it works both ways.

All Palace, but they look toothless in front of goal, so far at least. You can see why they have only scored 5 goals at home this season. With our full strength 11, i reckon we would stand a fair chance of getting something from this game. Will need a lot of grit and luck to get anything now, but you never know.

Its 10 men vs a Premiershit side, we've cleaned a few off the line, Macca is doing his man possessed impression at times again, Martin Atkinson has chosen his side, took nearly 40 minutes for us to get a decision out of him. I just wish Cardwell would attack palace back 4 every now and then when they're in possession just to keep them on their toes. We've ha d a couple of chance but quality of ball into the box ended them.

True but if the fixture was reversed town would still have 11 men going off the referee initial decision.

Fantastic effort by Town after the 2nd minute shocker. Hendrie is on a yellow now - so looking rather bleak for the second half - but you never know.
Even with 8 or 9 men on the pitch - just don't concede!

We are riding our luck, but everyone is giving 100% and Macca is looking very good again. If they can hold out with 1 men and no recognized center halves it will be an incredible result. Oh, and that was a clear red card, in my opinion.

Really can't be bothered to argue with anybody, going backwards and forwards saying this and that, perhaps VAR could decide,😉👍 i think we are all the same on here, we all want Town to do well and be proud of them and so far I'm immensly proud of my team and in particular its fans, so i call a truce, and remember All Town aren't we 😉

It certainly wasn't as bad as the Kompany tackle in mid week but that's how the game is now, too many inconsistencies in refereeing and interpretation of the laws of the game.

I agree Kompanys should have been a red too IMO but if you want to compare how bad the two incidents were (which is totally irrelevant of course) the Fox tackle was far worse.

Cardwell, needs to be more proactive, he needs to close down the CB with the ball when they enter our half, he doesn't need to charge him down but he at least needs to move towards the player raher then just standing marking whoevers in the middle of the park

I didn't say i wanted var at every game. if everyone has var then it would be equal There are only 9 games out of 22 fa cup games that use var today. If the game was played at BP there would have been no var so it would have been a yellow. and yes it would be a red with var every time. Great effort. If you were being particularly harsh you'd say we really didn't make anything from our very limited chances. However, I'm not, so hard luck lads, brilliant performance. Got to be proud of that. Safe journey home to all.

1-0 loss to a premierleague side, with no fit CBs and down to ten men after 2 minutes and it took them 83 minutes to score. I think we've embarressed Palace a little bit there. They'd never of won if we'd had a fully fit squad.

I've just finished watching in Beijing with one of my sons. We are so proud to be Town tonight. The ref gave us almost nothing. The free kick that led to the goal was not a free kick. Crystal Palace did not deserve their victory. GTFC and Michael Jolley and those remarkable fans can be justifiably proud as fck of what they have done today.

Pl us the twelfth man. Thought Premiershit refs were supposed to be better than the shite we normally have to put up with-evidently not. Shouldn't be Fox suspended-it should be Atkinson, Shite sticks together.

As a matter of interest, I thought that VAR was for goals and penalties, but NOT to tell the ref to change a yellow to red. It's to help the ref not to tell him what to do.
Four types of decisions can be reviewed using VAR: goals (and violations in the build-up to them), penalties, red cards and mistaken identity in awarding a card. For a decision made on the pitch to be overturned, it must be a "clear error". They will tell a ref of the offence not vice versa.

Rather silly. Atkinson would have booked Fox,VAR upgraded the card to red. Don't detract from the performance by going on about a red card which was technically correct.

FFS give it a rest, it was a red, VAR told the ref it was a red, no argument. Don't detract from what was a great Town effort with moans about the incident

Agree, thought if there is doubt the referee’s attention should be drawn to look at the incident himself to see if he wants to change his mind. From the radio the VAR ref made the decision not Atkinson, who was fourth official when Company was yellow carde. Don’t understand that aspect of the decision and really thought we were going to hold out for a much deserved replay. Well done lads

VAR deciding or the ref deciding after looking at VAR, it's totally irrelevant, it was 100% the right decision, a red card.
Harsh after only two minutes in what was his first tackle of the game maybe but a red nevertheless

As I understand - the 3 o clock games were not subject to VAR.
i.m.o you can not apply different rules to random games in the same tournament - whether it's the F. A. Cup or Tiddlie Winks.
Joke football.
But - immense effort by Town today - love'em.

Correct but remember some people will want to forget the laws of the game and go back 30 years.
Correct go back 30 years when footballers weren't wimpy playboys squealing like little pigs as soon as they feel someones breath on the back of their neck. At this rate it will become illegal to tackle and will become old man type walking football with no excitement, pace, or action. .

A great defensive performance from our lads, they've done us proud, every one of them can hold their heads high, MJ did wonders on changing the formation as soon as we were down to 10 . What a transformation that guy and his backroom staff have made to our club. I would just like to give a special mention for RHJ. he was immense today and fills in at centre back as if it's his recognised position. Our fans need a special mention to,sang their hearts out for 90+ minutes, couldn't hear the Palace fans. Safe journey home to everyone that travelled. UTM.

And it may but I very much doubt tackling will be banned. However football will remain been santised on and off the pitch. The fans however wont have a say in that.

Fully agree. How you can have two standards is beyond me-however the red card was the correct decision regardless.

It's been a long time since we had a team that we feel so proud of. Not just in this game, but for several weeks now.
This is a team with real fighting spirit.
For years now whenever we were leading a game I always had the feeling that the opposition would score, and they usually did. Once we went a goal down it normally felt like game over.
But when this team score I always feel that we will go on and win. When this team goes a goal down I always feel like they can turn it round.
I think MJ is building something special. I honestly don't think we have anything to fear in L2. It may not happen this season, but we are going to get promoted out of this league, and soon.
GTFC is back.

It wasn't was it - because the referee (the final man in charge ) gave a yellow card! On this basis and the way Town played we may have drawn or even won.

Absolutely spot on! What i cannot comprehend is that Atkinson is vastly experienced ref in the prem and Europe, who saw the foul and was prepared to issue a yellow, yet capitulated to Moss in the VAR room like he was a trainee ref, he should have been man enough to say ' thanks for the opinion I'm still king with a yellow' or is it mandatory to concede to VAR? 2 mins FFS, it was Fox's first tackle and Townsend was just too quick with his feet, he wasn't hurt, just show some common sense!

He would take the opinion of VAR-if he reviewed the evidence there would be no doubt he would have issued a red card.

But that isn't how VAR works. VAR makes the decision.
How it worked in the World Cup where ref went over and personally revised the incident. My point is the match referee deemed it to be yellow. Whatever, I think a ref with many years premiership and international experience was not of the opinion it was red, however, you say it was a definite red so we should agree. Nothing to say with eleven we would have played any better but if a man is to be sent off should be the decision of the match referee. I have no problem with VAR ref bringing it to his attention and asking him to look at tackle again but different refs make different judgement calls. Not against VAR but think this aspect needs tweaking.

Hence the laugh - the referee is no longer in charge. The 'men in black in the upper office' will decide who wins what. Who are they? Interesting how the gambling / bets will go?

This is what I was getting at. VAR draws the refs attention to things he's missed or doesn't have a clear view. In this case he had a good view of it and was going to give a yellow card. Then the VAR ref steps in, in my view he is out of order because he is in effect overruling the ref and telling him to change his mind irrespective of his decision. So now it is VAR the has the final say not the man in charge.

It was a yellow card - you know that, how many tackles have we seen in League 2 worse than that go unpunished. Townsend made an absolutely meal of it and the weak, pathetic Jon Moss took the opportunity to punish the lower league club.

What do think he would have done if he had reviewed the tackle after been informed by VAR?? In my opinion it was a red card offence.

Surely the most important thing is that the right decision is reached how it is reached is irrelevant. Or do you want the wrong decisions providing they are in Grimsby Town's favour presumably It was a red, how it was decided and all the shite being written on here about it (some twit has even hinted that the VAR team might have in some way been swayed by a gambling involvement FFS) is just detracting from a fantastic performance by our team, that's what matters now.

I honestly don’t know, you think it was a red but the whole humberside commentary thought not. I can see why he was sent off but could also see it being just a yellow. Fox did worse tackle early doors against Mansfiield and got nothing that’s the consistency factor and interpretation a ref puts on an incident. I just believe it must be the match referee who makes the decision as we have all seen Graham Poll and Dermot Gallagher on sport shows disagreeing with refs decisions.

FFS how many times! How heavy the contact was is totally flipping irrelevant and the Palace player's reaction played no part in the decision. Should they only award reds when a player suffers a compound fracture?

Don't want to be critical here but the VAR personnel have far more information available than JT & AB. I respect your opinion of the match official having the final say however when VAR is involved that's not going to be the case.

Why not just respect others have an opinion. Most of us accept it was not a ridiculous decision but want it made by the match referee after looking again at the incident. TV images can on occasions make tackles look better or worse and Atkinson was near the incident not like he was unsighted so the tv pictures may have confirmed his original deciding or persuaded him to upgrade to a red.

I see Bishop finally got sent off for Mansfield today, 4 days too late, after he assaulted Embleton right under the nose of the ref. Didn't even get a yellow for that. Should we spend the next hour debating that decision?

End of the day this has been an argument that has gone on for a long time, about early reds and is it fair to make allowances early on, on the one hand it can kill games that fans have paid and travelled to see, on the other should red card offences go unpunished just because of the timing? Its a grey area that VAR takes away from the game, however teams who play with VAR regularly will have an advantage in a way in that they’ll be more aware of the consequences of making errors

What a battling performance and they had 33 efforts, 32 where kept out, Macca outstanding and the players can take heart from such tough odds to have stood up against a side that has cost millions more than ours.
The following Town fans again doing us loud and proud, not the outcome we would have wanted, premiership you're having a laugh.

I am probably wrong but why when it's a premier team against a lower league team is it a premier ref, who probably knows some of the premier players( hi Wilfred how's the family?) and will ref it different to what the lower league players are use to.

It was a bit of a letdown to go down to 10 so quickly after all the hype but it did result in a terrific backs to the wall performance and we were so close to bringing them back to BP for a replay.
Definitely can't question the character of this squad anyway. They did the town proud.

Maybe VAR should be used for all the fouling that goes on at corners and set pieces-seems the referee and the VAR assistants ignore these fouls for some reason.

Just got home from the match.
Well done lads. Your fans and your team did you proud and you gave us a good game. The red card ruined the game unfortunately. Safe journey home to all your fans and good luck for the rest of the season.
Thanks for your postings and tips on bars etc. Scrumpy. Atmosphere was great, game entertaining and the stewards were sensible. All good bar the way the red card came about. Enjoy the rest of the season.

| Through the door there came familiar laughter, I saw your face and heard you call my name. Oh my friend we're older but no wiser, For in our hearts the dreams are still the same. |

For what it's worth Palace got a home draw against Tottenham in the Fourth Round.
