He was outstanding, won lots of headers and put in some vital blocks, throwing himself intent of quite a few. On another thread, pre match, I said I’d was wary at throwing him in to the game.
Happy to admit by all accounts I got that one wrong. Well done Matty!

Well done Matty lad! Wasn’t there myself but hearing glowing reports from fans who were. Am I right in thinking he only turned 17 a few weeks ago? Have we unearthed a gem? Surely a pro deal needs offering as soon as possible.

I bet the coach home was bouncing, he must be over joyed making a debut in a game like That! With our centre back predicament looks like he could get a run of games too.

Can't be many more dramatic debuts in our history? 17 years old and come on for your debut in an away game in Exeter in a relatively unglamorous position of central defender. Most substitute debuts are forgotten except by the person himself, hopefully, he'll go on and develop into a regular and stay for a few years. I'd love to see the team built around a nucleus of players that stay for a while rather than mass changes every season. We had that a bit under PH but not since we've been promoted.

I believe Ryan Bennett was just 17 ( you know what I mean ) when he made his debut for us away at the MK Dongs in 2007, a game which we also won 2-1 Would be good if young Mattie Pollock can emulate him Just seen this too... what a great feeling he must have had playing his part today https://twitter.com/mattdeanradio/status/1079079196037648384

Ah, it was indeed. It was a dead rubber of a game for us from memory, but Wolves including a young Robbie Keane needed a win to keep their promotion hopes alive. He was unreal that night for such a slight looking kid at the time. Always liked Stevie and honestly believe he’d have gone on to have a really good career had it not need for crippling injury problems.

I think from memory that Kevin Drinkell was still 16 when he made his debut.

Top marks to Mattie for today. Didn't look nervous or overawed, won his headers, got a few blocks and tackles in, and saved a certain goal off the line when Macca was beaten.
Not an easy situation to come on for his debut, for what was a 45-minute defence v attack exercise against a decent side. Great credit to him.
Well done MJ for sending him straight on as soon as Whitmore got the red too, would've been an easy option to move Fox inside and drop Woolford back to left back.
With Pollock's contribution, Ahkeem winning the penalty and Clifton's unreal shift in midfield again, it was a productive day for the Academy lads.

Think they'd gone by then? I started going in 97 and don't remember them ever being there? only time there's been anything in the corners since I've been going is the green seats.

His Dad was a no-nonsense sort of player who also had a good amount of ability. If he can offer similar attributes he'll have a good career. Good to hear a young player so excited and enthusiastic about a debut where he was rather thrown in at the deep end.

We seem to be getting plenty of youth coming through his season . Was our youth set up under Hurdt so bad? Or was he just too cautious to risk playing an inexperienced player ?

I always think it is much easier to blood youth when you are in midtable where there is less pressure.

True but we haven't been midtable and Jolley has been including young players all season in match day squads. I don't think Hurst was either brave enough to back them or didn't think they were good enough.

It takes years for a youth system to pay dividends if it ever does, bare in mind ours was reduced somewhat by being in non league for six years and you can maybe understand that Hurst probably didn’t have players of a high enough quality to blood two or three years ago.
With players being in the system for a while and qualify coaches at youth level, maybe the kids are only just becoming ready in the last year or so.

The youth set off was virtually self funding during the Conferences years in that the players & parents ‘action group’ covered a lot of the costs. It was almost entirely local based lads- you wouldn’t have got a Pollock for instance as he was from away and required digs and subsistence allowances. Now we are back in the FL we get a significant amount to fund the set up

True but we haven't been midtable and Jolley has been including young players all season in match day squads. I don't think Hurst was either brave enough to back them or didn't think they were good enough.
Don’t the rules now state that you have to have a minimum number of ‘home grown’ players in every match day squad? Could be wrong but I know there was talk of it. 1 this season and then 2 next season onwards rings a bell otherwise you can’t have 7 subs.

The youth academy seems to prospering for the first time in a while, Clifton Wright Rose Battersby Pollock Buckley and a few others who apparently are highly rated like Burrell and Curran, I wonder how many more there are who I haven't named, potentially exciting times ahead.

We seem to be getting plenty of youth coming through his season . Was our youth set up under Hurdt so bad? Or was he just too cautious to risk playing an inexperienced player ?
Bit of both i think. Yes, I do think Hurst was too cautious to play players still relatively early in their development. But also, as other replies have already pointed out, the Academy was running on skeleton staff during the 6 years in the abyss. The real basic minimum number of people you could get away with being able to actually still run an Academy. Since being back on the FL it's been boosted by the funding that League Clubs have access too, with the EPPP and all that brings with it, including the need to match it with a certain level of investment of our own, as well as putting in place the coaching and support structure required by the EPPP. Arguably it'll be another few years before we truly see the benefits of the Academy in its current form. And hopefully Jolley or another Manager happy to develop young players will be in charge of the first team.

I think there are a combination of factors. We implemented a number of changes once we gained promotion and you could argue that Clifton and Wright aren't even beneficiaries of these changes. Pollock joined in the summer so he can certainly be considered a beneficiary of picking young, released talent up similar to what happened with Bennett. The local lads currently on the cusp such as Battersby and Buckley are probably the first real benefits of these changes. You need to have patience with youth policies as it takes time. In another 3 or 4 years we will have kids coming through that have benefited right from the beginning of their time at Grimsby Town.

I think with Hurst it was easy to get a loan player in them days in the con, instead bringing a youth player in, he go out and players like Alan Goodall, Danny Parslow, Nathan Pond versitile experience players instead of playing youth like Josh Sunter, Ellis Hudson and Paul Walker at the time.
I also think the likes of Josh Fuller, Normington didn't get a look in because you could get a loan anytime you wanted back then in the league.
That's why the rules have changed for the better and the youth now are getting a chance. I bet Jolley would have got a CB in if the loan market was available all the time.

Hope he carries on and is successful so that in a couple of years the big boys start sniffing round, then he would be a big fish in a little pond.
By all accounts the big clubs are already looking at him. At the recent youth cup game against Mansfield, a large number of scouts from clubs far bigger than ours were sent to watch him.

It was his first and only appearance for the first team, but hey at least he can tell his Grandchildren he was a proffesional footballer!

its a two way thing, he, or his father, may not want him to sign a pro deal here if he thinks there is a better offer on the table. By 'better'I dont just mean money. Prior to taking up his 2 year YT here his dad had him at several clubs. He may prefer to sit on his YT deal which although peanuts, still has 18 months or so to run

Thought his response to Matt Dean’s question re signing professional forms for town was “telling” as he said his dad was dealing with that. I would have hoped for a more positive response along the lines of I would love to stay with the club and hopefully my dad will get this sorted shortly... May be being pessimistic but so many players move now before even making clubs first teams for peppercorn fees it makes it increasingly difficult for clubs like town to hold on to good prospects and probably more difficult if they are not local lads. Would expect he will be playing tomorrow and even on Saturday in the Cup game so good performances will be double edged as the vultures from the top clubs will be circling around.

I'm not sure that he is mocking him. Yes there were many "unbelievables" but can you hear the excitement in his voice as he says it? He is almost lost for words. Did you see that clip on Twitter when he was about to come on, pure pride. The pride he feels and articulates in his voice at making is pro debut with Grimsby Town is plain to hear and that is something that we have not experienced for some time. It makes a pleasant change from the journeyman telling us that he has "heard good things about the club and hopefully he'll get some game time while he's here and help the team". Well done Matty, you can say as many "unbelievables" as you like for me.

Could take it the other way that he's not interested in worrying about contracts or deals at this stage and is far happier letting his Dad sort that out rather than have an agent lining his own pockets at the expense of the players best interests. His Dad had a very decent, if not quite spectacular, career and is still involved in the game. I feel far more comfortable with him looking after any contracts than an agent.

This for me as well. His Dad would be looking for what's personally best for his lad long term, rather than an agent who might just see more £££ being offered. If there's a realistic pathway to first-team football here and a chance for him to get games when he turns pro, then it might make us a more attractive prospect. And that's for all young players, not just Mattie Pollock. A lot going round Twitter recently about our young side, Academy lads involvement, and the young ages of our 10 players that finished the game at Exeter. https://twitter.com/prospectwatch1/status/1079384117404422149?s=19

On the EFL highlights last week they also mentioned how young our side is. The more attention we can get for this, the better chance we have of getting more promising players in the building either on loan or permanently.

Did his dad not sign for Town right at the end of his career, but never actually make an appearance before retiring? Seem to remember something like that. Either way, let’s hope young Mattie never recreates this moment in a Town shirt... https://youtube.com/watch?v=eWNjWfIHXL4

He's been with us for about 3 minutes though so I'm guessing it would be about 17p (as opposed to the £6.50 it would be if he'd signed for us in 2001).
