Macca's save 5 mins in to injury time from a close range header may be the best save I've seen him make. Incredible.

Best save since his last spectacular one you mean?! 😆

Macca is in unbelievable form at the moment... shows how big securing him in the summer was.

Spot on mate.
This is he’s best Season yet 👍🏻

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Ask again if he's playing for us in the Prem or the Championship. No disrespect to James.

when I was a lad Harry Wainman was the goalie. In Division 4. I would say Harry was a better all round keeper, but James is incredibly athletic and is improving with crosses and punching. So, yes, getting him to sign a 3 year deal was smart, I reckon. He is the best keeper we have had in recent times, in my view

Charlie Wright, Harry Wainman, Steve Sherwood and Nigel Batch - he has some big boots to fill yet. But he is a good keeper for this level.

Perhaps signing Russell was a master stroke too.

Danny Coyne was the best I've seen in recent years, but if macca honours the 3 year deal I honestly believe he will certainly have gained Grimsby Town legendary status in most of the fans eyes..

Add Danny Coyne to that list please and considering his loyalty and the way he has developed his game in the last 5 years or so Macca should be held in the same regard.

If you had followed this thread the poster I replied to said that Macca was the greatest goalie we had had. I have seen better playing for GTFC over the last 50 years of watching but he is good.

Macca seems to have improved under Russell, were as with Warrington there never seem to improve.

Best goalie for Town during my 40 odd years following, no, but a vast improvement this year and has showed that he is committed GTFC signing a 3 year deal.

Look foward to watching Macca's saves later, back to the fortess of BP on Tuesday for the clash of the 2 in form teams.

Yep. His save near the end was indeed an absolute worldie but it wasn’t the only one.

I remember watching Town win away at a QPR side featuring a young Peter Crouch one Paddy’s day and Coyne must have made 30 saves, at least 10 of them that he had no right to.

Like Macca, Coyne lacked dominance in the box but Christ he was worth the entrance fee alone on his day and probably kept us in the second tier a season or two longer than we otherwise might.

As someone posted earlier, Macca has already reached legendary status for me and whether he makes 10 years at the club or not he deserves a testimonial. Not many players stick around longer than 3 or 4 years at this level anymore.

I was there that day too. Best goalkeeping display I've seen live bar none. Coyne at his best, pulling off a number of close range reflex saves that we're as good as any goal. McKeown is certainly playing well, and on current form he's one of the best in the league, but Coyne was a different level.

Think we won 1-0 with a late Groves goal but could be wrong.

Crouch certainly got some stick from the Town crowd that day and we took a fair few to that game. Used to enjoy our games at Loftus Road, always a good atmosphere.

I remember it as a Wayne Burnett tap-in from a rebound, but I could be wrong. I definitely remember that we deserved to lose by a huge margin, but aren’t those just the best away days?

Interesting that no one’s mentioned our record clean sheet holder during a season, Aidan Davison. Perhaps memories are tainted by his second stint and the way he left first time around, but he was incredible between 97-99.

Beasant, Davison and Coyne are the best I’ve seen in my lifetime. Macca is a Town great but having only ever played two levels below the aforementioned three, you can’t really make a comparison.

I'd go along with that and add Charlie Wright who remains the best I have seen, though George Tweedy was always said to be the life and soul of the 30s side. Ian Turner is underrated, when he left us he was a regular at Southampton for many seasons including winning the FA Cup. I always thought Sherwood was very good, not in the gymnastic way of Batch or Macca but he was a great organiser for the back 4 and read the game so well that with his positioning and anticipation he often didn't need to actually make a save.

Funny isn't it? Only a few months ag a lot of people on the Fishy were saying that Macca was not good enough for L2 and he had indeed made more than a few howlers. It cannot be coincidence that this super form comes after we signed Russell. Not only is he a coach but he is competition and fans have rated him highly when he's been in the side.

At the start of the season the loss of Warrington was also cited as a factor in Macca not having best start to the season.

Demonstrates we all jump in too early on occasions in judgement of the team, manager and all other things associated with GTFC. When right we love reminding all of our foresight and when wrong say it was all the other moaners who got it wrong.

Have to say in those early weeks Hessantauler looked lightweight to me and if you had told me our best run would come with him and the ever improving Harry Clifton holding down the central roles I would have fallen over laughing. Still laughing but because of our results and roll on Mansfield 😄😄

Definitely his best season. Only he'll know what's different. but the most obvious thing is the coaching change.

Jolley said "if there's been a better peformance in league 2 this season or probably for the past 10 seasons I'd like to see it, I thought James was unbelievable today"

McKeown is never going to have an easy game while we sit deep and play on the counter......not a criticism, it's working...just saying.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Coyne was an excellent keeper who I recall saved town getting totally battered on so many occasions I lost count.
he would be the stand out keeper for me, although as with Macca, I find myself thinking a better organised keeper wouldn't have to make so many saves.

I think keepers like Edwin Van Der Sar were fantastic because they just looked to calm, cool and collected.  Not sure I can ever remember Van Der Sar making a save, which shows how good he was.

It shows how good the defence is in front of them, not how good the keeper is!

Not always, we shipped goals until Dave Beasant played for us. I don’t think we conceded with him in goal and he didn’t seem to have to make any great saves.
Then he went back to Chelsea and we continued leaking goals.

Completely agree. Beasants strongest asset was his ability to organise and communicate with the defence to make their lives easier as he could read the game and was vocal with it. That in turn gave them confidence and a confident defence is a stronger and better defence, which in turn makes his life as a goalkeeper much easier.

Somebody like Van Der Sar who has the intelligence to read the game can organise the defence ahead of an attack. Great command of the box too and ability to pick crosses out the air. I think he made the defence of every club he played at better. In his best season he kept 21 clean sheets and Man U won the Premier League title. The only one who kept more clean sheets since the Golden Glove award started in the PL is Petr Cech who again has a lot of the same traits. If Macca kept 20+ clean sheets in a season are we going to be like "Oh that was all the defence in front of him, he didn't do anything special"? I don't think so.

I see where you are coming from but I believe it more important who's in the defence than the ability of a goalkeeper to organise a defence as to how many saves a keeper has to face.
